MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.
Dear Parishioners, Those who participate in the Saturday Vigil Mass may have noticed something different in the music lately. It is the incorporation of the assigned antiphons or chants for the Mass (either at the entrance or Communion). Soloist or choir members have simply chanted the verse in addition to other congregational singing to accompany the entrance or communion. This is reflective of a renewed interest in these texts on the part of Catholic pastoral musicians and liturgists. Those who participate in Masses at St. Cecilia parish without music (weekdays and Sunday 8:00 AM) are already familiar with these texts which are recited by the congregation at those Masses. However a little education about antiphons would be helpful. The idea of assigned prayer and scripture texts for our liturgical celebration has a long history and is rooted in our pre-Christian Hebrew spiritual ancestry. Sincerely in Christ,
St. Cecilia Parish – Bainbridge Island, WA

MINISTRY UPDATE
One of the core values that makes up the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul is to see the face of Jesus as we serve
those in need. Your generosity makes that possible and
we are appreciative of all your support. There is an
invisible layer of need on BI and it is growing. The past
year St. Cecilia’s has donated approximately 2300 lbs of
food to Helpline. Additionally, SVdP, has responded to a
large number of request for assistance with rent,
utilities and transportation. During the last two weeks
of October alone, we had nine requests for assistance.
We are grateful for every donation through the blue
envelopes and on-line giving. We realize that everyone’s
mailboxes are flooded with end of year requests for
donations, but we would be grateful if you can help us
help others. You have been and will continue to be an
avenue of compassion.
With Thanks,
SVdP
Matt Talbot Christmas Dinner: Saturday,
December 10th. Once again, our parish will be
providing dinner and donating new toys and clothing
for the Matt Talbot Christmas dinner. This
celebration benefits the families of men and women
in drug and alcohol recovery. For more information
please contact Amy Curran at

The parish Christmas Giving tree still has many gift requests from our neighbors. You can participate in this parish wide-project by 1) taking a tag (please sign one of the Giving Tree books when you do), by 2) making a monetary donation to SVdP through the offertory collection, and by 3) letting us know of a family that can use help this holiday.
The new, wrapped gifts should be returned to the tree before 11am, next Sunday, December 11, 2016. The church is open every day between 9am and 5pm so it is easy to drop off your gift at the tree. Your tag contains contact and deadline information. For more information contact Noel Saunders at 842-5142 or by email at [email protected]

Spiritual Enrichment Events presents Finding
Hope in Homelessness with Richard Lemieux,
author - Thursday, January 12, 2017 - 7:30 to 9pm in
the Parish Faith Center. Breakfast at Sally's: One
Homeless Man's Inspirational Journey is Richard
Lemieux's story of descent from successful business
owner and family man into homelessness and
despair. This first book, pounded out on a salvaged
typewriter in a beat-up van, with only his dog with
him, has received national attention, both for his
experience and for those still homeless. He will focus
on his journey, the people within that journey, and
how he recreated a sense of hope for himself and
others. Richard often speaks at schools, so all ages
are welcome.
ADORATION
God, our Father, I offer you my day. I
offer you my prayers, thoughts, words,
actions, joys, and sufferings in union
with the Heart of Jesus, who continues
to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of
the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be
my guide and my strength today so that I may
witness to your love. With Mary, the mother of our
Lord and the Church, I pray for all Apostles of Prayer
and for the prayer intentions proposed by the Holy
Father this month. Amen
A shoe drive will be held from Thanksgiving until Christmas by St. Cecilia’s American Heritage Girls. They are collecting new
and gently used shoes in a bin in the vestibule. The shoes will be distributed to adults and children in need around the world. Please drop off shoes in the bin anytime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and thank you for your support.
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
SELF-CONTROL is our word for December. In a month of so much excitement at home and at school, it is important for us to remember why we celebrate and how we can exercise mindfulness throughout the Christmas season. SELF-CONTROL is a habit of reflecting on and monitoring our own behavior. We introduce this concept now so our students develop this lifelong habit. A song playing frequently on country stations as of late begins with “MAY WE ALL.” I always like to belt out those three words when this song comes on the radio as I drive. The words serve to connect us as we commit to habits that develop our connection to one another. A few teachers, parents and I attended a recent presentation at Bainbridge High School, by author Michelle Borba who wrote UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in an All-About-Me World. We learned an alarming fact; students 10-18, on average, spend 7 ½ hours in front of a screen. Interviews with a wide cross section of college freshman indicates a lack of empathy in many young people. To develop empathy we need to look at others and be present to what they are saying and how they are feeling. MAY WE ALL limit the screen time of our children and MAY WE ALL set down our devices during dinner and during conversations. MAY WE ALL limit time with screen devices in order to read more, to communicate genuinely by listening to others and to hear the sounds of our world. We live in paradise here in the Pacific Northwest; looking up to see the trees, the water and the mountains is good for our souls. MAY WE ALL make a concerted effort during this festive, spirit-filled month to be present to one another as we celebrate our many blessings. With peace, Susan Kilbane St. Cecilia Catholic School is a faith-based community which inspires an inquisitive mind and a lifelong commitment to learning and stewardship.
