Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: Remember the commandments and hate not your neighbor (Sirach 27-28). Psalm: The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion (Psalm 103). Second Reading: Whether we live, or whether we die, we do so for the Lord (Romans 14). Gospel: Forgive one another from your heart (Matthew 18). Readings for the Week Monday: Nm 21:4b-9; Ps 78:1-2, 34-38; Phil 2:6-11; Jn 3:13-17 Tuesday: 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27-31a; Ps 100:1b-5; Jn 19:25-27 or Lk 2:33-35 Wednesday: 1 Cor 12:31 — 13:13; Ps 33:2-5, 12, 22; Lk 7:31-35 Thursday: 1 Cor 15:1-11; Ps 118:1b-2, 16ab-17, 28; Lk 7:36-50 Friday: 1 Cor 15:12-20; Ps 17:1bcd, 6-8b, 15; Lk 8:1-3 Saturday: 1 Cor 15:35-37, 42-49; Ps 56:10c-14; Lk 8:4-15 Sunday: Is 55:6-9; Ps 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18; Phil 1:20c-24, 27a; Mt 20:1-16a Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Catechetical Sunday Monday: The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Tuesday: Our Lady of Sorrows Wednesday: Ss. Cornelius and Cyprian Thursday: St. Robert Bellarmine Saturday: St. Januarius; Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.

Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Letter from the Archbishop Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Through the media we have seen the incredible devastation in the Diocese of Lake Charles. Our prayers and hearts go out to the people affected by Hurricane Laura. We have a sense of their loss from our experience fifteen years ago with Hurricane Katrina. In the spirit of Christ, we reach out to our sisters and brothers in this time of tragedy. We recall Jesus’ words, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, naked and you clothed me...I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least ones, you did it for me.” Mt. 25:36, 40 Thank you to individuals and parishes who already have given generously. If others wish to send a gift you may give through your parish or send to me and we will forward it to the Bishop of Lake Charles.

Archdiocese of New Orleans Hurricane Laura

7887 Walmsley Road New Orleans, LA 70125

May the people who must rebuild their lives continue to be in our prayers as we extend compassion to them. I have been in regular contact with Bishop Provost and he is overwhelmed by the destruction and personal needs of his people. Wishing you God’s blessings, I am Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
