The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey. In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Fellowship Sunday: August 4 Sunday, August 4, will be Fellowship Sunday. All are invited to gather in the Melancon Center after the 9 am Mass to visit with new and long-time parishioners, and to enjoy coffee and doughnuts. Sunday Morning Childcare to Resume: August 4 The babysitting service for six-month-olds to five-year-olds will resume on Sunday, August 4, during the 11 am Mass, in the Melancon Center. This summer, we assessed the babysitting service, which previously was offered at both 9 am and 11 am Masses. After speaking with many of the families who most often utilize the babysitting service, we have concluded that it would be most beneficial to offer babysitting only at the 11am Mass. For more information, please contact Jazmin Gutierrez, our Childcare and Nursery Coordinator, at [email protected]. Tithing Funds Distribution Input: August 8 St. Catherine sets aside 7% of each weekend collection to help the poor and needy. When the parish finance council meets quarterly, they distribute the funds from the tithing account. If you have any suggestions for charitable organizations that SCS could possibly support, you can send a request to [email protected] for consideration. We support nonprofit organizations that serve the poor, needy, homeless, etc. All requests must be made before August 8. Sessions will take place in the Melancon Center from 10 am-noon. For more information or to register, contact Carol Rooney, [email protected] or 460-0318. Radio Rosary at St. Catherine: August 13 Join in the praying of the rosary on Tuesday, August 13, starting at 6 pm in the parish office conference room. Summer Camp Week 1 Pep Rally Alpha Testimony: Patricia Lawson When I enrolled in Alpha this past January, I felt as if I was at a crossroads in my life. Over the past several years, my life had drastically changed. Shortly after my retirement from a satisfying 38+ year career in education, I lost both my husband, Patrick, and mother, Ora Gilly, within 10 months of each other. Two years later, I sold my home in Glastonbury, Connecticut, and relocated to New Orleans, primarily to provide support and care for my elderly father who suffered with serious medical issues as well as dementia. After he passed in April of 2018, I felt really alone, lost, and confused. In addition, I had many questions about my uncertain future and about my Catholic faith. What is my purpose in life? How can I discover what my purpose is? How can I do God’s will if I am not sure what His will is? Do I really matter in the world? Where does my life journey go from here? How can I develop a more personal, loving and intimate relationship with God? Although several people told me how beneficial Alpha had been for them, I remained skeptical. After all, these were deeply personal questions. How could a group activity such as Alpha provide me with the guidance that I needed, the answers that I sought? How would others who really did not know me help me to find answers to these life questions? Despite these reservations, I decided to give it a try. I attended the first session of Alpha not really knowing what to expect. I discovered participants were divided into several smaller groups. We first were treated to a delicious meal and some fellowship with other participants. I can remember thinking that I really did not have anything in common with most of the people in my group as they were young couples who were parents of small children. While they seemed to be nice people, what did I have in common with them? How could they understand the issues with which I was struggling? Following the meal, we watched a film and engaged in group discussion on a central theme. The theme for this first session was, “Is there more to life than this?” Perfect! Exactly what I was seeking. Some of the themes for the following weeks included, “How can we have faith?,” “Why did Jesus die?,” Who is the Holy Spirit?,” and “How can I make the most of my life?” Again, these topics seemed really to resonate for me in my present state of mind. I must admit that the first couple of sessions were personally disappointing for me and I seriously considered quietly quitting. As a person of faith, the film and the discussions initially seemed to be so self-evident and rudimentary. I was searching for something more profound, something deeper. I had real doubts that I would find any answers to the questions with which I struggled. I articulated this concern to one of the table leaders whom I knew. After listening patiently, she encouraged me to stick with it. I took her advice and I am so glad that I did. First and foremost, Alpha reaffirmed for me that I did indeed matter in the world. In all the noise and chaos of life, I had somehow forgotten that I was a beloved child of God who loves me and remains with me and will guide me. Even though I knew this, it had somehow gotten lost in my confusion. My participation in Alpha profoundly affected my Christian faith as well. I learned that it is natural to have questions to which we seek meaningful answers. This is, in fact, how we seek God in our lives. I also learned that all of us have one or more areas of our lives which need healing. Even though we were quite different in age, stage in life, and state of mind, I learned that all of us in the group shared one significant common bond; we were all pilgrims on a journey of faith. We walk this journey of faith because we seek to have a more personal relationship with God who loves us. By sharing our life stories, through the films and group discussions, through the music played, through praying for and with each other, and through the quiet time to reflect, I learned that all of us have burning questions to which we seek realistic answers to guide our lives. When the answers to these questions somehow elude us, we must seek the help of our fellow pilgrims. Faith is not a finite destination, but rather a work in progress, constantly evolving as we seek God present in our lives. I did not encounter any “burning bush” moments while participating in Alpha. It did not provide answers to all of my burning questions. But I did experience a few personal epiphanies thanks to fellow pilgrims who have become my friends. And while I may not have absolute answers to all of my life’s burning questions, my faith has been renewed and I am facing the future with the confidence that God remains near to me and will gently guide me along the way.

Alpha 4 starts on Tuesday, August 27. Please contact Joni, [email protected] or 835-9343, if you would like to participate.

Archdiocesan News God’s Special Children Mass: August 4 A Very Special Mass for persons with special needs and their families and friends is scheduled for Sunday, August 4, 2 pm, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, in Metairie. Refreshments will be served immediately after Mass. St. Francis Xavier Church is totally wheelchair accessible and has off-street parking. For more information, call Joy Zainey at 834-5865 or visit godsspecialchildren.org. Traditional Herb Blessing Ceremony: August 15 The traditional herb blessing ceremony will take place after the 5 pm Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Thursday, August 15, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, 2734 Nashville Avenue. Archbishop Gregory Aymond will preside at the Mass. In many European countries the Feast of the Assumption is the traditional day for the blessings of herb gardens and the ripe harvest. Located in the long days of summer, this feast points to the harvest and to the end of time. The Feast of the Assumption is inextricably linked to Mary as bearer of God’s Son, and the fruits of creation. Traditionally in Europe and in some area churches, wreaths of fresh and dried herbs and scented plants are placed near the reading stand in the worship space. Fragrance in the Scripture calls to mind the witness of the Holy Spirit. We recall that the anointing of the Lord as of earthly kings was done with fragrant myrrh, “Your robe is all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia” (Ps. 45). For more information, email shrineolps, visit shrineofourladyofpromptsuccor.com, or call 866-0200. Afterward, an evening meal consisting of three types of Papa John’s pizzas, mixed salad, and sundaes will be available for $10 per person. Those with August birthdays will be treated to the first places in the pizza and dessert lines. Guests are welcome. The event is sponsored by the Kenner-St. Philip Neri Naim ministry. For more information, contact Carolyn at 888-1835 or [email protected]. Named after the widow of Naim whose son Jesus raised from the dead (Lk. 7:11-17), NAIM is a Catholic self-help organization for widows and widowers offering emotional support and spiritual and social activities through regular monthly meetings, socials, and religious activities. Retreat Focusing on Women—Theology of the Body: September 26-29 A retreat focusing on the meaning of our being women, our ways of relating to men, the hungers of our hearts, and the unique “feminine genius”—to quote St. John Paul II—that enables us to be God’s intimacy in the world, will be offered from Thursday-Sunday, September 26-29, at St. Mary of the Pines Retreat Center, Chatawa, Mississippi. Present-ers Becky Clements and Paula Hunter are from southwest Louisiana and are experienced, certified retreat directors and leaders of groups in their Catholic Church communities. The suggested donation is $250 for a private room; $200 for a shared room. For more information and to reserve your retreat, contact Sr. Sue Von Bank, SSND, 601-783-0801, 601-741-3029, or [email protected]. Start Training for Tour de Cure: October 26 Diabetes is a preventable illness that is reaching epidemic levels, and the toll on our community is staggering. One in 11 Americans has diabe-tes, and 86 million Americans have prediabetes, which can lead to Type 2 diabetes and a host of other complications. Annual health costs for individuals diagnosed with diabetes are 2.3 times higher than those without the disease, burdening the health care system and, even more, families. Tour de Cure 2019, scheduled for Saturday, October 26, at the north lot of Lakefront Arena, will be a celebration of the New Orle-ans community and a health and wellness springboard. April Dupre is honorary chair and is bringing her “Treat Ya Self!” mantra to the Ameri-can Diabetes Association. In addition to a 5K fun run/walk and a 10-, 30-, and 62-mile cycling event, Tour de Cure will include Eat Fit NOLA and local food trucks, community health providers, and health screen-ings. There will be entertainment for the entire family, including live music and a kids’ zone so that families can come out and support their runners, walkers, and cyclists. For more information, search “Tour de Cure New Orleans.”

Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season Lord Jesus Christ, our God in the flesh! As You saved Your apostles from perishing in a storm by calming wind and wave on Your command, so now keep us safe and sound during hurricane season. Grant us favorable and benign weather. Protect us from the unpredictable elements of nature. Spare us from storm, flood, fire, illness, injury, disaster and sudden death. Preserve us from all evil and harm, for we, though sinful, are nonetheless the work of Your hands—and You, together with Your Father who has no beginning and Your holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, are our God, in whom we live, move, and have our being, now and ever, and for ages and ages. Amen.
