February23-SEVENTHSUNDAYINORDINARYTIMEFebruary26-Ash Wednesday We begin our Lenten journey starting with Ash Wednesday, February 26th. Our Masses will begin our parish tradition of kneeling during the Penitential Rite and our celebrant will leave at the conclusion of Mass to a chanting of “Have Mercy on us Lord Jesus, Our Savior. Burdened with sin, we implore you.” We as a faith community, journey now for 40 days as our Lord did in the desert, drawing closer to Him who saves us.

Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy. — Leviticus 19:2b

Changes to Mass during Lent As we journey throughout Lent there will be two changes to our Mass.

We will kneel during the Penitential Rite which be-gins with “I confess to Almighty God…”, through the Kyrie, standing when invited to by the priest when he says “Let us Pray”.

The recessional at the conclusion of Mass will be in our Journeysongs Book #346, a chant without musi-cal accompaniment “Have mercy on us Lord. Jesus our Savior. Burdened with sin, we implore you.”

Thank you.

REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 FEBRUARY 23, 2020

Brothers and Sisters,

Today we celebrate the seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time which is the last such Sunday before the season of Lent begins. In today’s first reading we hear God tell Moses, “Be holy for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.” Then in the last line of the gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” How’s that for a challenge? Not only are we told to be holy, we are also told to be perfect. The truth is that we can be neither without God’s help.

Jesus challenges us to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies. These are not our ins ncts. It is not easy. We get angry, we are upset, we want to do or say something to express that pain and rage.

The book of Levi cus from which our first reading comes gets its name from its contents, which for the greater part deal with ma ers and laws concerning the worship of God which were conducted by the tribe of Levi: hence the book of “Levi cus.” The words “be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy” is the command given by God to the Israelites. This same command holds for all people s ll. We are God’s adopted sons and daughters. There is an eternity of happiness awai ng us when we end this earthly life. The Chris an who is convinced of this truth, as every sincere Chris an is, will not look on the command to be holy so much as a command, but as a necessary prepara on for what is to come, a prep-ara on which he gladly undertakes.

The words of St. Paul in today’s second reading, call on each one of us to stop and think of the divine gi God gave us when he made us Chris ans. God created each one of us and it is to God that we owe the fact that we are here and now on this planet we call earth. Thanks to the divine gi of faith, we know that our few years on this earth are only a period given to us to prepare for our future. We know where the true, las ng heaven is. It is there where we are going. But to get there we must never forget that we are God’s temple, as St. Paul tells us today. We must keep that temple pure and holy. We belong to God; we are his adopted sons and daughters.

The lesson we have to learn from today’s gospel hardly needs any emphasizing. We must, if we are truly Chris an, for-give those who offend or injure us. We must love all men, whether they be friends or enemies. G.K. Chesterton (English author and lay theologian) says; “We are commanded to love our neighbors and our enemies; they are generally the same people”.

Jesus shows us what it means to be like him in word and deed. His challenge is radical. To be like Jesus means that dis-ciples (us) accept their God-given status and dignity as a child of God. Disciples are to go the extra mile, love their ene-mies and neighbors without expecta on of reciproca on, and welcome outsiders at their table. Such perfec on is only possible by the grace and love of God. God showers his love on those who are good and those who are not. God’s love is inclusive. When disciples (us) love their enemies, they love as God loves. When disciples extend God’s all-embracing love to others, they demonstrate to the world that they are a child of God. True perfec on exists when our love touches God’s love and it spills out upon the loveable and the unlovable alike. A disciple’s love gives priority to the other’s wel-fare first. Faithful

Be a ‘faithful’ Ci zen: Vote! California’s Consolidated Presiden al Primary elec on set for March 3, 2020

On Tuesday, March 3, 2020, California voters will go to the polls for the Consolidated Presiden al Primary elec on. In addi on to various federal issues and candidates, state and local ma ers will also be up for considera on.

A Moral obliga on As part of our moral obliga on as faithful Catholic Ci zens, we are

obliged to inform our consciences on those issues coming before the electorate, consider the effects such legisla on may have (with special a en on to what Catholic Social Teaching calls the preferen al op on for the poor) and to vote.

No Voters’ guides Our Bishop, Gerald R. Barnes, has asked us to refrain from using or distribu ng voters’ guides of any kind so please do not take one if someone offers one to you. Each of us are responsible for informing our own consciences via the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a review of the Papal and Conciliar documents, and teachings on the US Bishops (www.usccb.org )or the California Conference of Bishops (www.cacatholic.org ) websites.

Faithful Ci zenship Every two years the U.S. Bishops review and publish a document en tled, Faithful Ci zenship, to assist Catholics in their duty as faithful ci -zens to inform their consciences and vote. This document gives the reader a background in the rich heritage of Catholic Social Teaching so that once informed on what the church believes, Catholics may apply these truths to each and

every issue that comes before them either via the media or in their personal lives.

Vote! "We need to par cipate for the common good. Some mes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in poli cs. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in poli cs by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/2013

During the Middle ages many Chris-tian labyrinths were built into the loor of the naves of cathedrals. Walking it in prayer it becomes a tool for meditation that represents our life’s journey to God. Pilgrims were encouraged to walk it then go to the Altar where God comes to us. Our labyrinth is modeled from the one at the Chartres Cathedral in France, one of the few that have sur-vived history. The earliest Christian labyrinth was found in Algeria in a church in the 4th century, at the center was a bronze plaque that read “Santa Ecclesia” Holy Church. The Pilgrim’s journey to God takes our whole life and as St. Catherine of Sienna wrote, “All the way home is home.” ThelabyrinthwillbeavailableintheParishHallfrom9:00amto1:00pm.

Gracias.
