MINISTERIAL
MUSINGS
Christian Aid week has just come
to an end. Across the country
people have stepped out of their
houses and, either in joy and hope
or in varying levels of fear and
trepidation, have knocked on the
doors of people they live near,
some they know and many they do
not. They have asked these people
to give money towards something
they believe in, an organisation
that lives out its Christian faith in
apostolic action. An organisation
that gives money directly to
partners working amongst the very
poorest in society, trying to help
bring about a change for the better
in the lives they encounter.
So here is a huge thank you to
every one of you who overcame
their trepidation to join in the
country’s biggest house to house
collection. Thank you for collecting
in the Co-op or baking or selling
cakes to raise money. Thank you
everyone who donated their own
money to help the poorest people
across the world. And thank you
everyone who prayed for all the
efforts we made, for all we do is
underpinned by prayer and the
grace of God. Thank you for
answering God’s call to participate
in whatever way you could in God’s
plan for the world.
For in doing what you did, you
have lived up to the call of
scripture, the call of God and the
call of our faith. The Bible has over
2000 references to the use (and
misuse) of money, justice and care
for the poor and those on the
margins of society – which gives us
more than hint of where our efforts
as a church should be directed.
Jesus reached out to those most in

need and called on us to do
likewise. And as James said in his
letter, faith without action is
worthless.
But Christian Aid week is not the
be all and end all of our support,
but rather just one of the particular
times we focus on what God asks
of us. The needs of the world
remain all year and we can always
give at other times. Indeed I know
we have done for emergency
appeals and I am sure we will if
called to again. We can give money
regularly by direct debit or consider
leaving a legacy. We can pray
regularly for the work Christian Aid
does. Or we can look at the
campaigns for justice and the
needs of the world that Christian
Aid champions and add our voice in
support. If you want to explore

Thank you once again for all you
have done and all you continue to
do. And thank you for not only your
support for Christian Aid, but for
everything you support as you live
out your faith in action. God bless

Vicar Vacancy
On Monday 23rd May the PCCs from both churches met together with
the archdeacon and the area dean to discuss the strengths and
challenges facing the two churches and the qualities of the person we
should be looking for to replace Cynthia.
A small group are going to build on the ideas shared and draw up a
parish profile which will be used to help fill the vacancy. There will be a
further joint-meeting of the PCCs later in the year to finalise the
appointment process.
Please pray for God’s guiding hand to be upon this process.

Queen’s Official 90th Birthday 2016 A number of formal celebrations will be held in June - to mark the Queen's official birthday.
On 10 June she will attend a national service of thanksgiving, along with the Duke of Edinburgh, at St Paul's Cathedral, in London.
The following day, on 11 June - the Queen's official birthday - the annual Trooping the Colour parade will be held in Horse Guards Parade.
The birthday parade will end with members of the Royal Family making their annual appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
On Sunday 12 June, the Queen will then host a street party for some 10,000 people at the Patron's Lunch - a celebration of her patronage of more than 600 organisations in the UK and around the Commonwealth.

School visit Global Leicester.
On Wednesday 11th May, some children from St. Botolph’s Primary School visited Belgrave Road in Leicester. The focus of the visit was to experience and gain an understanding of the Asian culture within Leicester, whilst also learning about the different jobs that people do.
During the day, we were introduced to the local area and given a quiz to complete. We met and interviewed staff from local businesses, bought some items to bring back to school, were given many gifts by the lovely people of Belgrave Road, took part in an Indian dance workshop and visited the Shree Ram Mandir temple to find out about the Hindu faith.
We learnt a great deal about the Asian community in Leicester and about the Hindu faith. Everyone was so welcoming and St Botolph’s children were, as always, beautifully polite and well behaved. Some of us thought it was like being on holiday in India.

St Botolph’s Mother’s Union Report
On Tuesday 3rd May on a pleasant warm day, after the cold bank holiday weekend, we went on day trip to Sandringham.
After a good lunch, we visited the house, which is one of the Queen's favourite residences.
It had a very homely feel to it with lots of family photos around, we
even saw the chair her Majesty sits in to watch TV. Then we went to the little Church where the Royal family attend
Christmas services. Well worth a visit.
On Wednesday, 18th May at the 10am Holy Communion service Rosemarie enrolled Christine and Derek. We were joined at the service by Bishop ISIAIH and his wife EZEREDA from Tanzania, who were given
a gift of a book, “The Servant Queen and the King she serves”. In the hall afterwards about 30 of us enjoyed a chicken casserole
followed by delicious cold puddings.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th June when we have a bring and share lunch.

ST JAMES’ MOTHERS’ UNION REPORT
Our Mothers’ Union again supported three more children being welcomed into the Church. On 17th April Rev’d John Bird baptised Lilly Rose Walker with the congregation present from the Family Service and members of the Oaks Sunday School. After that service concluded, Rev’d John Bird baptised Ava-Leigh Fawn Hutchinson. On 15th May Rev’d Canon Cynthia Hebden baptised Jeannie Booth Bardsley.
Last month I was enrolled into the Oaks Mothers’ Union by Rev’d Dr Ed Bampton. Twenty five members/visitors were present to witness this with the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to the Mothers’ Union. £40 was raised on the Bring and Buy stall, funds from this go towards the Oaks Mothers’ Union.
This year marks 140 years of the Mothers’ Union which has 4 million members around the world. Mary Elizabeth Sumner started the Mothers’ Union in 1876, by founding a society to support women in their role of as mothers. The Queen who has been our Patron since 1952 celebrates her 90th birthday this year. To celebrate 140 years of Mothers’ Union, we are joining other members from the Leicester Diocese on 20th June at Whet-stone Pastures Farm, home of Monica Winfield. Monica is a presenter on BBC Radio Leicester. At this event we will give thanks for the fellowship encountered through membership. There will be plenty to do on at the farm on the day so it hoped the weather will be kind to us. We have a few spaces left on our special bus so please contact Janet on 01509 506154 if you would like to join us.
On Wednesday 22nd June we have our own Mothers’ Union Rally in St. James the Greater Church. This will be a joyous occasion with members from other Mothers’ Union branches in the Diocese and similar organisa-tions plus invited members of the Oaks Church. Rev Dr Ed Bampton will be enrolling four members into the Oaks Mothers’ Union during the ser-vice. RoseMarie Manning Leicester Diocese Action and Outreach Co-ordinator will give the address and Diocesan President Margaret Rouse will close the service with prayers. Our local based Shepshed choir - Chera Voce are going to perform three items from their vast repertoire. The afternoon will conclude with tea and cakes in the Oaks Storer Hall.

TUESDAY GROUP REPORT
On the 19th April we had a Beetle Drive. After initial confusion and laughter over scoring, we had a fun evening. Our meeting on 3rd May was cancelled as quite a few members were going on the Mothers' Union trip to Sandringham House or the Probus holiday to Llandudno. Future Dates: 7th June Change to Programme.
Summer Outing to Ruddington Framework Knitters Museum. Places available for anyone wishing to join us. Coach leaves Market Place at 6 pm.

Tuesday Group 1966 I would like to tell you a little about our new Tuesday Group for women. Built on the foundations of the Young Wives' Group, it has been expanded to include unmarried ladies as well as married ladies, and there is no age limit, although we wish to extend a special welcome to the younger set and particularly those new to Shepshed. Our hope is that the group will grow into a circle of friends, where a newcomer can find interest and entertainment as well as Christian companionship, and if necessary an introduction to church-going. In any event, we hope our members will naturally wish to work and worship with the Church as a whole. We have already a very varied programme mapped out for this winter, and we also plan to use suggestions by the members to cater for minority interests as well as the usual ones. If you are free on alternate Tuesday evenings, please come along to the hall at 8 pm. I can promise you a warm welcome. If you cannot join us please remember our new group in your prayers. Children and Families Work – Call for help!
As part of the funding we receive for the Children and Family Worker we need to start collecting stories, understanding, experiences and events that those members of our church under the age of 11 are sharing with us.
This is one of the ways we have said that we will evidence the benefit and growth we are receiving as a result of this funding.
So for example if a young person shares their thoughts with you on something they have learnt in one of the services, it would be great to record it.
None of it needs to be lengthy or detailed, it would just be great to capture these moments as we go along so we are not hunting around at the end of 3 years funding to show what we've achieved!

ST JAMES’ GARDENING CLUB
Our June meeting is on Thursday 2nd and our speaker is Richard Adams to talk on “Gardens through the Seasons”.
Meeting starts at 7.30 ,visitors welcome at £2 a head. Venue is the Oaks Storer Hall as usual. Refreshments provided. Also note money for our outing to Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire on July 2nd is due at the June meeting.

membership charity, Mothers’ Union,
mark 140 years of faithful outreach to
families of all faiths and none. Since 1876
when Mary Sumner first brought together
parents in her own Hampshire parish to
build confidence in bringing up their
children, it has grown to an organisation of
over 4 million women – and men – in over
80 countries of the world.
There are 2 Mothers’ Union groups in our parish with a varied
programme throughout the year.
Oaks in Charnwood – St James – meet on the 3rd Monday in the month

There will be a special 140th Anniversary event at Pasture Farm,
Whetstone, the home of Monica Winfield, on Monday 20th June, where
everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Lots of stalls, tractor rides, pick
your own strawberries and refreshments. Entertainment too. If you
would like to join us, sign up at the back of church so that we can
arrange transport.

QUIET GARDEN DAYS IN MAY TO SEPTEMBER Following the vision of the Quiet Garden Trust, which began in 1992, and has since spread worldwide, we aim in Leicestershire to offer an experience of spiritual re-newal under the abundance of God’s love, and within the beauty of a garden, to those of any faith or none. Silence is the essence of a Quiet Garden Day. You will be gently guided into periods of silence by a leader who will give some ideas to help personal reflection. You can use the ideas as you will, simply walking, sitting or sleeping, as you choose - painting or writing. Each Day begins at 10 am and ends at 4 pm. We conclude each Day with a short act of Christian worship.
To book: contact the Host, using the telephone number or email address given. Numbers in brackets after the venue indicate the maximum number that can be accommodated. Venues marked with a (D) may present difficulties for some disa-bled people – the Host can advise.
Most Days start with coffee and biscuits and end with tea and biscuits/cakes.
Cost: a donation of £6 per person is suggested for private venues and guests should bring a packed lunch. Drinks will be provided.

Diocesan Synod
report
On Saturday 21st May Diocesan Synod met at Christ the King, Beaumont Leys. 98 people attended.
Opening worship was led by Framland Deanery.
This was the first Synod here for Bishop Martyn, and his full Presidential Address can be read on pages 29-31 He particularly wanted feedback on a number of issues, and posed the following questions for discussion in groups of 8:
1. How would you describe the current mood music in diocese - choose a song and explain why? 2. Where are we in relation to the vision and strategy (Shaped by God: numbers of disciples / depth of discipleship / service of world)? Is it owned/talked about in your church and how is it making a difference? 3. Messages for me - what do I need to hear as I start out as your bishop?

Other items on the agenda: • The accounts of the DBF were approved
• There was a report that St Martins House was now part of the Diocese, and SMCP LTD (St Martins Cathedral Properties ltd) was now to be removed from the Companies Register.
• The first draft of the Diocesan Budget for next year has been distributed as part of the Parish Contribution Pack of information
• A report was given on the events of the last General Synod.
• And, because it’s the language we use, there was the Promulgation of Amending Canon 34. Fundamentally this strengthens the Church’s position in relation to safeguarding, and includes appointing a Safeguarding Adviser which we did in 2015.

Diocesan Synod May 2016 – Presidential Address
Start with thanks. Two weeks ago I started my pilgrimage around the diocese visiting children’s and youth groups. I want to thank the organisers of that pilgrimage: Louise & Mike, Luke and Keith and my hosts: 2 church schools – Mountsorrel and Waltham on the Wolds, after school activities, youth drop-in, and youth prayer evening. It was all so encouraging. Thanks to Cathedral staff for the Welcome Service last Saturday, and Diocesan staff and Bishop’s office who all worked so hard – the service has been the talk of the town.
Thanks to Communications Team – Liz and Keith – I’ve done lots of interviews in the past few weeks – though I’m not sure how much has been because of my arrival, and how much to do with the football club!
But above all, thanks to God for calling me here. I want to offer some reflections on calling and vocation and look with you at Exodus 3 and the call of Moses. Well known passage – Moses meets with God in burning bush and God speaks of hearing the suffering of his people and so sends Moses to Egypt.
5 times Moses refuses: "But Moses said to God…" The objections are worth looking at because the first four are answered by God. But it’s not always noticed that there is a fifth objection which God doesn’t answer and which is very revealing about the nature of leadership and vocation.
But who am I that I should go to Pharaoh? This is about personal doubts. I’ve had plenty of those, as I am sure we all have at times. Those moments of waking in the night thinking “what am I doing?” and “what on earth possessed me to think that I could do this!” But God responds: "I am with you" – a promise repeated by Jesus and one I come back to again and again.
But who are you – what is your name? This is about theological questions. In a situation of religious diversity, this is a key question: which god among the many claimants to that title is calling me. Again God responds: The God of your ancestors has sent me: I am who I am; or I will be who I will be – this is the God who reveals himself by what he does, and the story that follows is the Exodus: God saving his people from slavery and leading them to new land. This is the God who saves.
But I have never been eloquent – God responds: "I will teach you what to speak"

But suppose they (the Israelite people) do not listen to me. Notice the difference: first four were doubts about himself. These are legitimate and God responds. But the fifth objection is an expression of doubting the people: “suppose they don’t listen to me”. Some commentators link this to the signs Moses was given to convince people that God had sent him: the staff which changed into a snake; and water to blood – both appear again later in the story; but Moses is also told to put his hand into his cloak, and when he pulls it out, it turns leprous – this one is not used later - why? At this time, leprosy was viewed as punishment for derogatory speech – so this is a sign to Moses not Pharaoh. Moses has spoken against the people and while he is entitled to have doubts about his own worthiness for task, he is not entitled to have doubts about the people.
This is a fundamental principle of leadership: it’s okay to have doubts about your own abilities; indeed it can be good if it drives you to your knees in prayer and you are reminded that God will be with you, God will give you words to speak, God will give you a team to work with. But a leader must also have faith in the people she is to lead - to see good in them and raise them to higher achievement through praise not condemnation, encouragement not criticism. There were to be many occasions when Moses would have a legitimate complaint against the people – after all, they repeatedly complained against him – but here at the moment of his calling, there was a clear lesson: don’t doubt the capability of the people God has given you.
So let me be clear: I've not come here with all the answers – I don’t have lots of clergy following me around ready to be deployed to Framland deanery; nor do I have all the answers as to how the diocese moves from 14th in the Generous Giving league table of dioceses to 1st; nor do I have a simple formula for growing the church or deepening discipleship.
I do have a sense of priorities and these are very much in tune with the diocesan vision and strategy which I’ve studied carefully in recent months. I will be focusing my own ministry on prayer and encouraging others to go deeper in prayer; I will be focusing on sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in word and action and enabling others to invite people to God’s party; I will also focus my energy on working with others to tackle poverty – following up on the good work of the Poverty Commission and addressing the many different faces of poverty. I have lots of ideas I will want to explore with you in conversation in the months ahead and I hope you will feel able to bring creative ideas forward to this Synod.
Moses conversation with God recorded in Exodus 3 teaches us that a leader has to trust their people. So I want you to know that I am full of

hope for the future of God’s church – it is God’s church and my hope is in God. But I want you to know that as an outsider, looking at the diocese with fresh eyes, I see so many signs of God’s spirit at work, so many examples of people cooperating with God, reaching out to children, young people, asylum seekers, the deaf, the disabled, young parents and grandparents. The numbers may not be huge, but that doesn’t matter – we’re often planting in hard soil. And to those of you working in local churches, in fresh expressions of church and in chaplaincies, it will often feel like hard work, running to stand still. So all the more reason then, to encourage one another and use even Synod meeting’s, to spur each other on.
We will be addressing a number of challenges in Synod over the next year. This July, General Synod is having its own form of shared conversations on Scripture, Mission and Human Sexuality. At some point this Synod will also have to engage in that process. And how we debate these questions, alongside other questions around the Anglican Communion, support for persecuted Christians around the world, questions around the environment and interfaith engagement – all these questions will require us to listen to different perspectives and genuinely commit to the corporate task of discerning what God is saying to the church.
This is God’s church and God is faithful. We are created in God’s image and capable of amazing things when we cooperate with God. I am enormously encouraged about the future of the church - quite what that church will look like in ten years’ time, I don’t know – I rather suspect it will look very different to todays’ church. But I am very excited by the prospect of embarking on this journey of discovery with you.
So it’s time for me to stop and hand over to you. I asked that we sit around tables so that we could have a genuine conversation at this Synod – that may or may not be what you are used to, but I want everyone to have the opportunity to speak. So first some questions for you to discuss, then a plenary so I can hear back from you.
