February 19, 2017 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” -Matthew 5:44

Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts as well. By telling us not to retaliate, Jesus keeps us from taking the law into our own hands. By loving and praying for our enemies, we can overcome evil with good. If you love your enemies and treat them well, you will truly show that Jesus is Lord of your life. This is possible on-ly for those who give themselves fully to God, because He can deliver people from natural selfishness. We must trust the Holy Spirit to help us SHOW love to those for whom we may not FEEL love. Maybe we need to trust Him more? (adapted from LIFE APPLICATION BIBLE COMMENTARY).

2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal This year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal theme is: Our Return to the Lord. It is time for us to do what we can to support not only our Diocese but the programs and ministries that benefit our parish and our Catholic commu-

nity. The BAA supports our Catholic Schools and the education of our future priest and deacons. The BAA supports ministries that change lives for the better. We are blessed with much; let us be a blessing to others. Our 2017 Parish Goal is: $26,855.00. Last week we collected $747.00 in one time pledges from our parish collection envelopes. Thank you for those who partici-pated. For future donations, please be sure to make checks payable to the Bishops Annual Appeal and not to St. Boniface. You may drop your pledge in the col-lection basket and we will mail your donation for you. It is easier to keep track of pledges when made directly to Bishops Annual Appel. If you did not receive your letter from the bishop by mail, you may find extra en-velopes on the ushers table. Thank you for your contin-ued support of the BAA.

Family Promise Thank you to all who helped

Last week St. Boniface hosted 2 adults and 3 toddlers. This was successfully achieved by 40 people giving 270 hours to help someone else. There were hosts who inter-acted with the families, cooks, those who donated needed items and food, those who set up and broke down our Faith Formation classes, and people who did all the laun-dry. Thank you for your support of this important minis-try. This is being a good neighbor. Youth Question of the Week

Who was St. Valentine and why do we honor him on Feb. 14th?

DIVINE WISDOM The Lord’s message, through Moses, was to “take no re-venge and cherish no grudge . . . love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, “Great in theory, but not always realistic!” Then Jesus in today’s Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat ene-mies the same as friends? Again, we’re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the “real world.” Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wis-dom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest—without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjust-ments accordingly. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Answer: Valentine was a priest/bishop/martyr of the Catholic

Church back in the 3rd Century. Emperor Clau-dius ll banned all marriages in Rome so that he could have more single men for the army. Bishop Valentine disobeyed and married couples any-way in secret. For this he was arrested, beaten, and beheaded. He died on Feb. 14, Year 269 A.D. Patron Saint of Lovers.

Low Country Catholics The Low Country Catholic Young Adult Group will be hosting a weekly group study for young adults on prayer starting next Tuesday, Feb. 21. We'll be using Ascension Press's Oremus for the study. The study will take place (Tuesdays, Feb. 21, 28 ; March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 4, 11) from 7-9 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Savan-nah's Parish Office/House on Bull Street. Parking will be available on the street or in the lot behind the church. Call/text 912-856-4366 with questions. We hope to see you there!
