SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS The Christmas Eve Mass on, Saturday, December 24th was an awesome time for children, teens, adults and families...kudos to our Sunday School students who participated and/or attended! We plan to have other opportunities for our young folks to be an integral part of our worship celebrations. Thanks to Ms. Yvette Belt and Mr. James Butler, from our History & Culture Ministry, many of our young folks will be involved in activities for Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March. In April, Mrs. Sarah Scott, one of our parents will involve our young folks in a creative experience with the Stations of the Cross on Palm Sunday. Please continue to keep our Sunday School staff, students, parents and our church community in your prayers! Beverly White

PASTOR’S PAGE I don’t know about you, but I had a wonderful holiday with my St. Bernardine’s Parish Family! Pastors always approach the holidays with a bit of apprehension: is everything ready? will anyone show up? will everything go as planned? will we be able to pay for it all?! But this year? No worries! The 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass started everything. My first two years here, the attendance at that Mass was disappointing . . . to say the least. Very few families with children attended what was supposed to be a “family” Mass. Where were they? This year, we incorporated a Christmas pageant into the Mass and had young people serve as ministers. The difference? We more than tripled the attendance from the year before – 347 people this year (112 last year)! And it was fun! Attendance for the whole Christmas weekend was 676. When Christmas falls on a Sunday, most parishes suffer a loss in their Christmas collection. Not at St. Bernardine’s. This year’s Christmas collection was $13,043, up nearly $4,000 from last year! (Last weekend’s bulletin reported a different number because it only included the amount of the second collection for the Christmas weekend; the total collection comes in over the course of several weeks.) Thanks to everyone who contributed!!! Finally, we began the New Year with our annual community dinner, in which we had enough food to feed an army. Everyone had a great time celebrating the New Year – and even those who came late went home with a care package. No one left hungry! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, especially, Beverly White and Lori Mahoney for working on the children’s Mass; Catherine Thomas and the Young Voices of St. Bernardine’s Choir and the Women’s Chorus Plus One; Deitrick Goodwin and the Church Choir; Trena Carter and everyone who decorated the Church; all the liturgical ministers and their leaders (Nadine Bailey, Beverly Bush, Tee Jones-Actie, Beverly White; Denise Stanley); Deacon Paul Barksdale and everyone who contributed to the New Year’s Dinner, including our Youth Servers, our Men and Women preparers, our Drivers, and our clean-up crew. It takes a Village . . . and we have a great one here at St. Bernardine’s. Thank you, one and all!!!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
