Notes from THE DESK OF THE PASTOR We wish you a renewing and spiritually refreshing summer. Father Phil’s weekly reflections will resume in September.

Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is ill or facing surgery is encouraged to consider receiving the Sacrament of the Sick particularly before going to the hospital. Please, if you would like speak to Fa-ther after Mass or call the rectory to arrange a time to be anointed. This sacrament gives us much more grace to help us deal with illness. God wishes to walk with us in a special way when we are ill.

Catholic Appeal: The cardinal has sent a wonder-ful note of thanks and he asked me to pass this message on to all of you at St. Bartholomew for all that e have done for the Catholic Appeal. This an-nual effort support the good works and many of the programs of the Archdiocese of Boston. We have reached our parish goal. However, the needs of the Archdiocese of Boston are serious and if you have not contributed yet to the Catholic Appeal I ask you to consider doing so. The parish would benefit as well because we now receive a rebate of 65% be-cause we have reached our goal. Thank you for your generous and compassionate response.

Quo Vadis July 7-10, 2016 Boston College & St. John’s Seminary Quo Vadis? Where are you going? These words of St. Peter to our Lord are words that speak to the heart of every young man as he ponders and prays—where is God calling me. Quo Vadis is a dynamic retreat for young men of high school age (13-18) to consider the questions: what kind of man do I aspire to be? what is God saying to me? where is God calling me? how do I get there? Over four days these young men will hear inspiring talks, pray, eat, travel to Boston, and have fun together. They will have a rare opportunity in these busy days to consider and to hear God speak to them. We ask you, our brother priests, to consider asking those young men in your parish who take or desire to take their faith seriously if they might attend this retreat. They may or may not be called to the priesthood. That’s ok. Our first goal is to encourage these young men to be the saints, the holy sons of God, who God has created them to be. The generosity of the Knights of Columbus and Boston College has kept our costs low. We are working hard to make this available to any young man who is interested, so each retreatant is asked to pay only $50. The accommodations will be in a dorm at BC. The retreat will be held at St. John’s Seminary. It begins with Mass at 4pm Thursday July 7 and concludes following a 2pm Mass on Sunday July 10. You can find more information and help these young men to register at VocationsBoston.org or by calling the office 617-746-5949.

STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE Sharing: Time Talent Treasure WHOSE WATCHING YOU? Recently, most of us probably saw the news story about the little boy who called the police when he got home telling them that ‘my father went through a red light without stopping.’ With a smile on our face, we then heard the rest of the story when ‘father’ had to take the phone and answer the policeman’s questions. ‘Did you go through a red light?’ Reply: ‘Yes I took a right on red and I made a mistake and did not stop first.’ After an apology and the policeman’s verbal caution, the case was closed. As amusing as this seemed to be, it is really a good lesson for us all. (different interpretations of the same action!) In all facets of our lives, others are watching us. As parents, friends, neighbors, workers, Catholics, the list is endless. How do we conduct ourselves and how do our morals/beliefs get demonstrated in our daily behav-iors, no matter how insignificant our actions may be. How about what we say out loud and how about what we put out there on the internet? Are we the person we think we are and want to be? Or are we someone else? Often talked about is the fact of the anonymity in the internet. Consequently, many are displaying strong feelings--negative language, abusiveness, sexually inappropriate suggestions, and much more. Why? Because no one knows who is sending the message. We can vent anonymously. Maybe so. But our Lord who created you to be all that you can be must be very disappointed. Few seem to set the bar high and then spend a lifetime trying to live up to it. Humility is striving in our daily lives to live up to our Catholic/Lord’s high bar and do so, particularly when no one is noticing. How about using our anonymity to make this world a better place? How about using our daily actions as a constant uplifting example of how the Christian life should be lived--whether we are aware of being observed or not. There is so much evil in the world. We need goodness. We can be that light in the darkness to say nothing about being a good example for all the little oneswatching us, even when we are una-ware. BLESSED be the name of JESUS. The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
