Brothers & Sisters,!
!
We find music throughout our life. In moments moving, tragic and joyous, music plays a decisive role inspiring
the human spirit. What we realize, at the same me, is certain kinds of music lends itself to certain occasions. As
an example, we wouldn’t play elevator music at a funeral any more than we would perform taps during a cele-
bra on of holy matrimony. The se(ng of the event, in large part, determines what kind of music we perform. !
!
Praise and Worship music beau fully expresses our faith in a popular beat lending itself to extraliturgical events, !
social events, even driving along in the car as we listen along to the melodies and upli*ing words. Sacred music,
properly speaking, is music that is used during the celebra on of liturgical rites (Mass, exposi on of the Blessed
Sacrament, Liturgy of the Hours, and so on). Sacred music has its own form and func on because of the se(ng in
which it finds itself: namely, in the presence of Our Lord as we pray to him through media on of the church’s
rites. !
!
Music during Mass is meant to elevate and inspire our hearts to worship. It’s func on is not so much to impress
or delight us for its own sake, but to cause our reflec on of the ac on on the altar to deepen. The entrance,
offertory, and Communion hymns we have been accustomed to singing are actually replacing the scriptures that
the church has provided for us to sing during those parts of the Mass. The Mass is scriptural, including in what we
are to sing, and instead of embracing these words of the scriptures to be used in our singing, we have replaced
them with a hymn that is more or less based on the sen ments of that scripture provided for by the church. The
entrance, offertory, and communion chants are meant to sound much like we do the responsorial psalm now,
where one cantor begins the psalm and the rest of the choir sings the rest of the verses. The congrega on could
then sing the response with the cantor a*er each sec on of the psalm un l the piece is complete. In this way, for
the entrance, offertory, and communion parts of the Mass, instead of singing some composer’s reflec on on the
words, we could sing the words the church provides themselves. We could sing our praise to God in the very
words we are given in the scriptures. We sing to God with God’s word! We would not think of replacing the re-
sponsorial psalm with a hymn loosely based on it, would we? Why do we do so with the entrance, offertory, and
communion hymns? A*er we sing the proper texts of the day, we could then sing an hymn at these parts in the
Mass reflec ng on the mystery presented for the day.!
!
This is a change from what most of us are used to but it is important we come to appreciate our Catholic way of !
worship. This is what the church provides for us and when done it elevates and beau fies the unique nature of
what we believe about Mass. The Mass is the coming together of heaven and earth in a way that we enter into
the presence of God truly. In that presence, we use music differently from all other places we use music. !
!
As we con nue to expand the breadth and depth of our music here at the parish, please see it as an opportunity
to drink richly from the reservoir of our catholic heritage. The music found in the liturgy is meant to stand alone
among all other forms of music and elevate our hearts and minds to the Lord as we par cipate in the Mass.
Please be pa ent as we move forward and keep an open mind knowing that the church in her wisdom has sung
the scriptures at Mass in this way for thousands of years and many saints have been formed by it’s presence. !
!
God bless you!!
