Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Happy Mother’s Day! The love of our mothers is incredibly important for our growth and ability to be ourselves. I celebrate quite a few funerals and I hear it over and over again from the children and grandchildren of a deceased mother how significant was her presence, support, discipline, and encourage-ment. Nothing can replace this type of love which is experienced from conception till death. God bless all our mothers, including my own. In my homily last weekend I mentioned the wonderful episodes of FORMED.org, especially, the Symbolon series. The last two episodes have dealt with love and its significance in forming relationships. The last episode highlighted love in marriage and what that truly means. The love that we seek in marriage is a love that seeks the good of the other. Love, if it really is love, does not focus on the self, but is turned outward to others and, in marriage, to the spouse. Love accepts the whole package, not just the good points. Actually, because of the love of a spouse and its total giving, the partner has the chance to grow through weaknesses and shortcomings to become more and more perfected. But lest we forget, this type of self-giving love emanates from the heart of God. It does not happen just because I want it. God gives me the desire to begin with and the drive to take the risk to share more and more of myself with the other. Please take the time to examine these programs. There are also wonderful programs for the family and for parents. Each episode is well done and not a waste of time. I am looking for good people to serve on our Parish Pastoral Council. The Council is that group of parish leaders who are called on to advise the pastor in respects to the overall life of the parish. It is not a decision-making body, but a group of prayerful and involved men and women who work with the parish to try to discern the call of the Spirit in the life of the parish. The Parish Pastoral Council focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of our parish and its activities, with a desire to form our people in their faith so that they can spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus to others. No particular expertise is needed, just a concern for your fellow parishioners and an openness to the Spirit’s presence in your life. In line with the thrust of the Cardinal’s “Renew My Church” program, we here at St. Al’s should be asking ourselves whether we are promoting the message of the Gospel or not. Are we encouraging all of our parishioners to allow God’s grace and Spirit to work through them to touch the lives of others? Pray over it and let the Spirit decide for you. As I mentioned before, we are close to signing a contract for new electric signage on Wheeling Road. We are also making progress in finally connecting our buildings to city water. This has been a very long range project which began a couple of years after I arrived here. Maybe we can complete it by the time I leave. We’ll see.

They'll see and hear: Traditional and original sacred music; How the bread and wine become the Eucharist; Why Father wears those colorful vestments and why he dresses like Jesus Christ; How to pray in Eucharistic adoration; And how to behave in church through the example of other little children! TESTIMONIAL: “ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! I show this every year to our 2nd graders preparing for First Eucharist. The actor's enthusiasm about the Sacrament of Eucharist is so authentic. The instruction is very age appropriate.” TALK/LISTEN: MARRIAGE AND FAMILY, Love Unveiled ABOUT: Strong relationships and marriages are of vital importance to individuals, the Church, and society overall, but real effort and wisdom are indispensable to making them last. In this focused presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn shares key principles that he has lived out in his own life. His advice is practical, challenging, and sometimes requires sacrifice, but it is sure to bear fruit and bring forth many blessings. TESTIMONIAL: ”ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE! Absolutely what I needed to hear and will be sharing with spouse. I hope to put his advice to practice today! A MUST. Every married couple should listen to this talk!” TALK/LISTEN: REAL WOMANHOOD, LISA COTTER ABOUT: In this talk given to a group of women at the FOCUS national conference, Lisa Cotter debunks the myths of modern day stereotypical womanhood. Using insights from the late Pope St. John Paul II and the heroic example of modern-day saints, Lisa gets to the truth about what it means to be an authentic woman. TESTIMONIAL: “INSPIRING AND MOTIVATIONAL-There are so many misconceptions about what the modern catholic woman is, and should be. This debunks all the theories and is well worth a listen for single and married women alike.”
