Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lent is a time to be open to the gifts that God wants to give us. In the Gospel this Sunday, the Samaritan woman encounters Jesus and her life does a total turnaround, what we mean by conversion. When she arrives at the well she is focused on herself and her own need-ness. She has found life to be difficult but she is unable to make the adjustments necessary to find fulfillment and peace in her heart. But then she meets Jesus and He draws her focus away from herself and onto Him as the true source of life. She has her routine, coming to the well, avoiding too much contact with others, trying to avoid facing the unfilled part of herself. Jesus offers her a way to freedom and life. He accepts her without criticism or pointing out her faults. He invites her to know a God of Spirit and Truth that loves her as she is and desires her to know her true self. Our Lenten experience is our time to examine our routines, not just the habits themselves, but our way of seeing the world around us, our attitudes, our judgments and criticisms. What is keeping us from deeper happiness? What prevents us from accepting ourselves as God does and being open to God’s vision for us? Like the Samaritan woman, we are all looking for something that will lead to personal fulfillment and peace. We have our buckets and bucket lists. But God wants to give us something that our buckets cannot hold – an unconditional love and an abiding presence that will sustain us forever. Please accept Lent’s disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as proven ways to break our routines and clarify the voice of God inviting us to accept and trust His love for us. Today, at Holy Name Cathedral, two of our parishioners will be receiving special scouting awards. Mary Therese Maslanka will receive the St. Anne Medal of Distinction, based on her outstanding services and contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic young people, and her dedication to further Catholic adult leadership in youth ministry, specifically with the American Heritage Girls. Mary Therese’s daughter, Marianna Maslanka, will be awarded the Marian Medal recognizing her service and spiritual development with the American Heritage Girls. Our parish is proud of Mary Therese and Marianna for this achievement and their desire to grow in the practice of their Catholic faith. May they be an inspiration to others to discover the richness of our faith and share it through service to others.

Our Lenten Outreach – Foundation for Children in Need 2017 Most of the activities of FCN take place in the rural villages of India. Dr. Geetha and Tom spend about seven months out of the year doing their good mission work in India. During Dr. Geetha’s stay in India, she is very busy conducting workshops on health care and hygiene and providing FREE medical care. She reaches out annually to more than 10,000 people in nearly 20 villages. She visits village schools and remote areas to help educate the children about their health care and also provides those suffering with a variety of illnesses with needed medicine. Here are a few photos of FCN’s medical ministry in action. Dr. Geetha loves to visit with the underprivileged and illiterate children because they have limited opportunities to learn about health care. Dr. Geetha is very committed to treat these children with special love and care and to treat each person with dignity and respect. She firmly believes that prevention is often more likely to happen than a cure and if all the people in the villages would learn about basic hygiene irrespective of the difficult circumstances they face, they will have a better life and their families will be happier and healthier. The only way to have a lasting positive impact is to educate both Mother’s and children alike. Your alms giving, fasting and prayers during this Lenten season means a great deal to the continued success to the medical mission of Dr. Geetha and the Foundation for Children in Need. Please feel free to take a sponsorship brochure this week, fill it out and drop it off in the sponsorship baskets located in the back of church on your way home today. You can also decide to mail in your sponsorship brochure to the P.O. Box found on the FCN brochure. Please take an FCN alms giving “Change for Change” bank and bring it back to St. Alphonsus by Palm Sunday. Thank you for your consideration, kindness, generosity and prayers. May the Peace of Christ be with you and your family, Brian Reynolds Foundation for Children in Need Director of Development Please do visit our website for more information about the good work of FCN at: www.fcn-usa.org Thank you again for your prayers this Lent!
