FROM FATHER CHUCK

Happy August! Time seems to stand still these days with the various restrictions for our safety yet the calendar moves on. I hope that as we move into August you have had or are planning at least a little break from the routine, a little breather of rest and re-creation with a few family, friends and the Lord. Wisely, we are limiting our interactions and doing our best to curb any sharing of the virus. At the same time, creative ways of rejuvenation are important for our mental & spiritual health. I am wrestling with how best to make that happen in my own life as well. The fatigue of this pandemic can be overwhelming and freeze us in our tracks and so it is important to design and share ways we can cope with that fatigue and not simply give up because of it. I am continually renewed and impressed by those coming to mass and those participating in mass on line via YouTube or other media platforms. As Catholics the mass is near and dear to our hearts and when inspired by the Word and strengthened by the Eucharist, both physically and spiritually, we can find the fortitude to get through this uneasy time. Part of the gift of the mass is not only sharing Communion but sharing community. It is good when we see others gathered with us. It is more difficult for those sheltering at home. Some staff have been calling our parishioner list again, now for the third time since the shut downs began. I hope this is helpful and yet another small way we can stay connect-ed. If you need support or contact please don’t hesitate to contact the parish office and let us know – by phone, email or written note. If you’re getting downtown you’re probably noticing more people who appear to be living on the street. This is a seri-ous problem in our community and in many communities across the country. The lack of mental health resources, afford-able housing and jobs are primary reasons for much of this. Addiction and homelessness often go together as well. Last Sunday we had a couple of people asking for money in the parking lot and around the church. I have found that giving money is not generally very helpful to people. When possible, it is much better to give them food or provide other direct service than money. Sundays are the hardest for people because most of the places that provide free food are closed. Catholic Charities has been looking into providing a meal on Sundays through St. Vincent’s but that is not in place at this time. In the midst of Sunday Masses it is often difficult to attend to people in need and yet it is also what we should be about doing. The Lord says to the people in Isaiah 58 that the fasting he wishes is to share our bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless and clothe the naked when we see them. This is a huge problem to wrestle with and yet it is right outside our doors. Let us pray together about how we might best respond as a community of faith. If you have thoughts, ideas and the energy and willingness to help, please let me know. I have some sad news about the façade of our school building at the entrance on Arlington Avenue. I have been look-ing at this for quite some time and, as I mentioned last week, it is badly in need of repair We finally found some profes-sionals to examine it and the parish Finance and Pastoral Councils have reviewed the matter. It appears that there is no way to save the elaborate decoration above where the pillars end. That part is cracking and crumbling and is not secure. The recommendation is that we take that down as soon as we can arrange it. We plan to take proper photos and meas-urements in case the opportunity to re-create this design might arise but I expect that it would be quite expensive to do that. I am not aware of any local business that does this sort of work. We will continue to investigate. The contractors will remove that section and repair and restore the pillars and front foundation, which should improve the look and safety of that side of the building quite a bit, though sadly, minus the fancy design. Please keep this matter in prayer as we move forward.

Alphonsus Catholic Mission in Paradise Valley, Nevada. Paradise Valley is about 50 miles from Winnemucca. St. Alphonsus Mission is served by the pastor at St. Paul Catholic Church in Winnemucca. Fr. Jose Sobarzo celebrates mass with the St. Alphonsus community on the second Thursday of every month in the small church that holds about 50 people. He said that usually he expects about 20 people for mass. There are many families that work on the various ranches in the area, thus many children. They receive their religious education by driving in to St. Paul’s in Winnemucca where most of them also attend public school. It requires a strong commitment of faith and community to maintain this mission church and foster continued learning and growing in their religion. We lift up the good people of St. Alphonsus in prayer and thank them for their witness of faith! Blessings to you all this 18th week in Ordinary Time!

DEL PADRE CHUCK

¡Feliz Agosto!

August 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On August 8 & 9, we participate in the National Collection for the Black and Indian Missions. Your contributions support missionaries, here, in the United States who are evangelizing in Black and Indigenous Catholic communities.

It is only through the constant generosity of Church members that evangelization among Black and Native American, Inuit and Aleut communities has been possible for more than 125 years. Churches and schools in African American and Indigenous communities depend on annual evan-gelization grants to continue their programs and pastoral activities.

Our diocese benefits directly from this collection: Bishop Manogue Catholic High School receives a grant from the Black and Indian Missions. This grant helps with tuition assistance for Native American and African American students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to have a Catholic High School education.

Thank you for your prayerful support of the collection for the Black and Indian Missions.

ASK A PRIEST . . . I come to Mass regularly, when should I NOT receive Communion? It is important to remember that the Eucharist (Communion) is not a reward for good be-havior. Indeed, it is the source and summit of Church life. We believe and teach that the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of our Lord through the prayer of the Church we commonly call the consecra on. We also believe and teach that the Eucharist cleanses us and separates us from sin. We pray several mes for mercy and forgiveness during the Mass. St. Ambrose noted: “If we proclaim the Lord’s death, we proclaim the forgiveness of sins. If, as o en as his blood is poured out, it is poured for the forgiveness of sins, I should always receive it, so that it may always forgive my sins.” If you have been bap zed and be-lieve in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and live in keeping with what Christ taught, you ought to receive. The excep on that the Church teaches is if someone is aware that he or she has mortally sinned then the person ought to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia-

on, receiving penance and absolu on, before receiving Communion.

PREG NTELE AL SACERDOTE . . .
