Cold comfort for pets

Transition auditors reviewing Sunbury’s separation from Hume have been urged to ensure security guards are present at a public meeting later this month.

e call comes aer the previous public meeting on the controversial subject led to ery disputes between members of the public and a probe into the alleged misbehaviour of Sunbury-based councillors Jack Medcra and Jack Ogilvie.

e pair, who fronted two investigations, have complained that they were “ambushed” by agitators waving placards at last September’s meeting at Broadmeadows Town Hall.

Cr Medcra was later suspended for 28 days by a Municipal Association of Victoria panel for breaching the code of conduct. Cr Ogilvie was reprimanded.

Fellow councillor Ann Potter has also said that people sought to intimidate her at the heated meeting.

Cr Medcra last week said a strong security presence was needed to prevent a repeat of what happened last year.

“I am concerned things could get out of hand,” he said.

“I just hope it doesn’t turn into an event where people are targeted because their views are dierent from that of others.’’

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the auditors should at least consider security requirements ahead of the meeting in Sunbury on July 24.

“Based on previous meetings we’ve

had in Sunbury, there’s never been a problem, but given what occurred a few months ago, you’ve perhaps got to take that into account.”

Sunbury Community Progress Association president Alison Cunningham said she did not believe security would be required.

“We’re all adults, aren’t we?,” Ms Cunningham said.

In a statement, transition auditors John Watson and Frank Vincent said they did not expect a security or police presence would be needed.

‘‘We look forward to having a productive and respectful information session that will need no intervention by security or police.’’

e auditors said they were looking forward to hearing the views of residents and ratepayers.

ey said they want to give people the chance to have their say “in a manner respectful to all participants”.

“We will present an overview of the information we have released to the community and will answer questions from the audience,” the joint statement read.

“An independent facilitator will be appointed to guide proceedings.”

e meeting is at Sunbury Memorial Hall from 7pm on July 24.

Macedon Ranges motorists are being urged to drive to conditions, especially when travelling on wet, icy or unsealed roads.

Police and Macedon Ranges council have issued a winter warning with fog, slippery surfaces and poor driving a factor in too many collisions.

Council’s assets and operations director, Dale ornton, said the condition of the shire’s 800 kilometres of unsealed roads could rapidly deteriorate during winter.

‘‘We regularly inspect unsealed roads, but wet weather can make roads, particularly unsealed surfaces, slippery very quickly,’’ Mr ornton said. ‘‘We urge all drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions, especially when it’s wet, foggy or icy.

‘‘Wet and slippery surfaces mean that you can’t stop as quickly so it’s really important that you drive appropriately.’’

Macedon Ranges police highway patrol’s Sergeant Geo Neil said while there had not been a large number of incidents recently, unsealed roads were not without their dangers.

‘‘People have to remember that unsealed roads are unstable,’’ he said.

Sergeant Neil said cold and wet conditions increased the general risk of rear-end and run-o-road collisions.

He said too many motorists continued to drive with a sense of entitlement.

‘‘Some people seem to think, I will do 100km/h because that’s what the speed limit is, regardless of the conditions,’’ Sergeant Neil said.

Motorists are being encouraged to obey temporary speed restrictions, leave more space between their car and the one in front, and turn on headlights to improve visibility.

‘Community’, prices Kyneton’s real estate hooksRelatively low prices and easy access to Melbourne and Bendigo are fuelling interest in the Kyneton area.

Latest gures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria reveal that Kyneton recorded the state’s second-highest housing capital growth rate for the year to March 31.

e median price for a three-bedroom Kyneton house has increased 13.5 per cent to $420,000.

Bendigo topped the state with growth of 16.9 per cent, taking its median to $397,000,

while Ballarat Central was third (up 12.7 per cent, to $332,500).

PRDnationwide Kyneton branch manager Helen Jens said that with its train and freeway access, Kyneton was increasingly seen as an aordable and attractive alternative to Melbourne’s fringe suburbs.

‘‘ere’s a very strong migration of professional people to the area, particularly young professionals,’’ Ms Jens said. ‘‘A lot of it is to do with the facilities here. Piper Street and the food is important; the hospital is

important, the schools … a lot of the talk is about how Kyneton is seen as one of the last places that still has a real sense of community.’’

Ms Jens said the overwhelming majority of her sales in the past two months had been to people from outside Macedon Ranges.

She said the interest of out-of-towners was also reected in the rental market, with many people testing the waters before making the decision to buy.

McColl Property managing director Jan McColl said there was also plenty of interest in nearby Malmsbury.

‘‘We’ve just sold four properties there in the past two weeks, so it can’t be discounted as a destination, either,’’ she said.

Bulla residents have vowed to ght a decision handed down by the state’s planning tribunal to extend the lifetime of the Bulla tip until 2023.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal members deliberated for more than three months before handing down their decision to allow the operators of the Bulla tip to continue to use the site as a private rubbish tip for another eight years.

e ve-day hearing in early March involved four separate appeals. Two land- owners sought independent action against the tip operator, BTQ Group.

A group of Bulla residents appealed against Hume council’s decision last April to grant BTQ Group a two-and-a-half-year extension of its planning permit.

e permit was granted until December 31, 2016, to allow landll and rehabilitation works to be carried out.

BTQ Group also appealed against the council’s decision. e landll operator had originally sought a 10-year extension, aer having being granted a 20-year lease in 1993.

e VCAT decision to extend BTQ Group’s permit until December 31, 2023, was based on the view that the land can accommodate more landll material.

“is is valuable, not only to the company and the owner of the land, but also to the community in general. Landll capacity is a valuable asset,” VCAT said.

e tribunal largely dismissed resident complaints as being irrelevant, saying “they really only served to confuse and obfuscate the issue”, and directed them to take their grievances to the magistrates or Supreme Court. In another slap in the face to Bulla residents, the tribunal acknowledged that Hume council had described the landll operators as “largely compliant” with permit conditions.

Alan McKenzie, who was born and raised in Bulla on a property that neighbours the tip, described BTQ Group as careless and said he

Tip verdict rubbished

was sick of the stench, dust and pollution that blows onto his paddocks.

“I think VCAT is a joke,” he said. “In the council and the EPA’s eyes, because we live on a farm, they think we’re able to withstand their dust and rubbish.”

His family grows wheat, barley and canola for human consumption on paddocks that adjoin the tip, which accepts asbestos, shredded tyres and building materials.

Mr McKenzie said that when the tip contaminated his crops, he received no form of compensation.

Carmel Egan, who lives near the tip and

has become a spokeswoman for fed-up Bulla residents, said they will air their grievances in a submission to a state government inquiry into the EPA.

According to the EPA’s Damian Wells, BTQ Group was ned more than $14,000 last year because of multiple breaches of Pollution Abatement Notices. He said the EPA “will continue to regulate this site as a priority”.

An underground re has been burning on the site since before BTQ Group took over the land. e previous operators went into liquidation in 2008.

Attempts to extinguish the re have failed.

From information about mastectomy lingerie to a friendly shoulder to laugh or cry on, women with breast or gynaecological cancers are receiving valuable support through a Sunbury group.

Breast cancer survivor Andrea Casey says many strong friendships have been forged since Sunbury Pink Ladies began late last year, with women feeling free to share their problems and victories.

‘‘It’s just great for these women to come together with others who are going through the same things so they know they aren’t the only one,’’ Ms Casey says.

She underwent three surgeries and radio-

therapy aer being diagnosed in October 2012 and says she was inspired to start a group in her own town aer receiving help from a similar network in Delahey.

Ms Casey says an atmosphere of comfort and condentiality is key to the new group’s success.

‘‘It’s important to be able to raise issues, to sit and have a laugh or cry, and no one thinks anything of it.’’ e group has about 15 members from Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, and meets at Sunbury Community Health on the second Tuesday of every month.

A Sunbury student who successfully balanced VCE studies and volunteering has been given a head start as part of a La Trobe University early admissions program.

Madeline Wain, a rst-year bachelor of science student who plans to become a medicinal chemist, was given automatic entry under the university’s Aspire program, which rewards applicants who have volunteered with the CFA or St John for at least six months.

Ms Wain has been a St John Ambulance member since she was in year 10. She says her ongoing work with the organisation’s Sunbury unit has been benecial, allowing her to help the community and acquire valuable skills.

‘‘Originally, I wanted to be a paramedic, so learning and performing rst aid really opened my eyes to what’s involved,’’ Ms Wain says.

St John Ambulance chief executive Stephen Horton says the program is a great way to foster the development of students and promote the benets of volunteering.

‘‘Our participation makes another positive contribution to our community by building resilience in our future leaders,’’ he said.

Applications for this year’s program close August 31.

Help comes full circle

People with a commitment to social justice are being urged to help an organisation that has been ghting for the rights of Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents with disabilities for more than 30 years.

Citizen Advocacy Sunbury co-ordinator David Abela says the group urgently needs residents to join its committee of management to ensure it can continue existing services.

While the immediate future of Citizen Advocacy was not under threat, Mr Abela

raising and networking, was more important than ever.

‘‘e whole thing has become more complex in that government requirements and funding are tighter,’’ Mr Abela said. “Even now we’ve

said more hands were needed so it could keep recruiting caring, responsible volunteers to make a dierence in the life of about 40 people who were lonely or facing dicult challenges.

‘‘Historically, we’ve had really good people on board, but we’ve recently lost some who have been on the committee since the beginning,’’ Mr Abela said.

He said federal government requirements had changed, so the need for a committee comprised of people with a range of skills, ranging from nance and marketing to fund-

got the government reviewing the framework of how they fund disability advocacy.

‘‘But fundamentally, we simply need people with a sense of social justice who want to give back to the community.’’

Mr Abela said Citizen Advocacy made a real dierence to the lives of people it helped, providing friendship, new experiences and, in some cases, protection from abuse.

‘‘It’s not sitting in front of the computer and learning what’s happening in the world,’’ he said. ‘‘is is actually getting out there.’’

A Woodend barista with a passion for poetry will share selections from his growing body of work at a spoken-word event this weekend.

By day, Ben Oost puts his energy into creating sublime coee. Outside work hours, he pours his being into craing the perfect rhyme.

His eort and talent have led to him being invited to be the featured reader for the next monthly meeting of the local group, e Chamber Poets.

Oost, who owns e Village Larder, says his interest in poetic works was piqued while studying Keats at high school.

‘‘I fell in love with poetry the day I read To Autumn,’’ he says. ‘‘I have always enjoyed writing, but it was years before I decided to take it more seriously.’’

Creative writing sessions at Woodend

Neighbourhood House, led by local poet Myron Lysenko, gave Oost the push he needed to pursue his art with more vigour.

‘‘It was only a couple of years ago that I made the decision to attend the workshops, and then wrote a couple of poems that had some success,’’ Oost says.

He says anyone interested in poetry is welcome at Chamber Poets events, which include an open mic section.

‘‘ere’s no pressure to perform and, while some of the members are quite accomplished, it’s a really encouraging atmosphere. It’s not elitist in the slightest.’’ e group’s next meeting is at e Chamber Art and Coee House in Woodend from 2-4pm this Saturday.

It’s business not quite as usual, as Hume council continues works to dramatically improve the eastern section of O’Shanassy Street in Sunbury.

People are being urged to support shops in the popular dining and retail precinct, which remains open while the major upgrade takes place.

A part of the council’s Sunbury streetscape makeover, trenches have been dug along the kerbside so powerlines can go underground.

Other works will include wider footpaths with granite paving, improved pedestrian lighting, kerb and drainage upgrades, pedestrian crossing improvements and land- scaping works.

Seven mature elm trees will be planted along the street.

Sunbury Business Association vice- president Marnie Harding said while some retailers had experienced diculties, including losing trade, most understood the upgrades would be ‘‘fantastic’’ in the long run.

‘‘SBA encourages people to make an extra eort to support these businesses while the works are being delivered, as experience tells us it can be tough for traders,’’ Ms Harding said.

Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said the council had deliberately chosen this time of year to carry out the upgrades because shops were less busy than during summer months.

‘‘Council has also attempted to schedule the major construction works for the quieter days of the week to minimise any inconvenience,’’ he said.

Cr Atmaca said street furniture, including extra seating and new drinking fountains, would be installed to encourage people to

Open, but mind your step

spend more time on the pedestrian-friendly shopping strip.

‘‘e refurbished streetscape will encourage more alfresco dining and undoubtedly entice more and more people to visit every business along O’Shanassy Street,’’ he said.

Works are expected to be nished by the end of October.

A Facebook page has been set up to give businesses an extra channel to promote specials.

8 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 7, 2015

Winter is the season for colds and u.

Running noses, persistent cough and a pounding headache can give anyone the winter blues.

But there are a few simple things you can do to lessen the pain.

1. Protect your paws

Washing your hands is a great habit to get into, but it also helps protect from illness-causing bacteria.

Hand Hygiene Australia offers some easy advice on how to disinfect your hands and keep you healthier:

• Wet your hands with running water.

• Apply soap.

• Lather well.

• Rub hands vigorously for at least 20seconds, remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between ngers and under ngernails.

• Rinse well.

• Dry your hands with a clean ordisposable towel.

• If possible, use a towel to turn off thefaucet.

2. Sanitise, sanitise, sanitise

It may seem obvious, but germs areeverywhere. The Rhinovirus can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so regularly disinfecting your work environment can prevent the spread of germs.

3. Try the switch

Switching from coffee to tea may actually help expel some germs.

Drinking tea and breathing in the steamstimulates the cilia (the hair follicles in the nose), helping to move germs out more efciently.

“Try a lemon and honey blend – lemon thins mucus and honey is antibacterial,” says Dr Murray Grossan, ear, nose andthroat specialist at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

4. Increase protein

Studies have found that people with protein-decient diets have a higher risk of developing a cold.

“Diets that are too low in protein candeplete the immune system,” says DrDouglas Kalman, director of nutrition andapplied clinical trials at Miami ResearchAssociates.

“You should make sure you get protein-rich foods throughout the day, like sh, eggs and yogurt.”

5. Hello – dirt is calling

Phones can harbour hidden bactera.Healthcare professionals encourage the cleaning of phones with sanitising wipes to reduce the germs that may get near faces and mouths.

9 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 7, 2015

Celebrating 30 years of providing excellent service, Family Medical Centre continues to meet the needs of the Sunbury community through knowledgeable and professional staff.

Speech pathologist Fiona Tremlett (pictured) has extensive experience in the paediatric eld and is a qualied practitioner of the programs of The Hanen Centre, a Canadian organisation that provides research and training aimed at promoting language, social and literacy skills in young children.

Ms Tremlett, who opened a private practice at Family Medical Centre in 2012, lives locally and specialises in working with young children who have trouble speaking.

“It’s a fascinating challenge working with late talkers,” she says. “These are children under three who are late in developing their talking skills. Some of these children do catch up but for others it can be a sign of more signicant communication problems or delays in their overall development.”

Ms Tremlett says late speech development can impact future communication, social and literacy skills.

“Early assessment and action is vital,” she says. “It’s all about lots of play, lots of patience and being genuinely interested in what and how these children are trying to communicate.”

Ms Tremlett is a passionate healthcare professional providing continued care for the Sunbury community.

“Just like us, even young children like to know that someone is really listening to them,” she says.

Shoulder pain is a common complaint that increases with age. Problems in the shoulder can occur commonly with overusing the arm or with an ankle injury. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint (like the hip, but not as stable) and since your shoulder moves every time you move your arm, it is not diffi cult to imagine that shoulder problems could affect 15 to 30% of adults at any one time. It is a common reason to visit a physiotherapist at our practice.

When to see a physiotherapist. When to see a physiotherapist.

It is sensible to consult your physiotherapist if you shoulder pain fails to clear up after a few days of rest.

Other indications that it is time to call your physiotherapist are:

• Inability to use the arm and carry objects.• Inability to raise the arm.• Pain whilst at rest.• Swelling or signifi cant bruising around• Swelling or signifi cant bruising around• Swelling or signifi the shoulder joint or on the arm.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it is important that you have your condition assessed by a physiotherapist. Please call Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic for an appointment.

e power has gone on at Woodend farmers market as the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group pushes ahead with plans to expand the monthly event.

Market co-ordinator Sharon Kittson says a new power supply, installed at the northern end of the market site last week, is central to the group’s vision to extend the market and make it more accessible for stallholders and customers.

A recently secured permit will allow the market to double from about 60 to 120 stalls over

the next 10 years and move onto an all-weather surface near the tourist information centre.

“[is] will mean heavy vehicles and visitors won’t have to go through mud in the winter months,’’ Ms Kittson says.

She says the market, which started in 2012, attracts about 3000 people a month, half of whom come from out of town. e market is on the rst Saturday of the month.

Everything’s smart and beautifully nished at this contemporary tri-level house on about 911 square metres – and it’s right in the heart of town. Latte-toned wall paint with white accents, streamlined vertical blinds, vast stretches of oor tiles and the sheer size of rooms mean all is set up for immediate liveability. Entry is into a foyer, to the right of which is a study and, across the way, the large main bedroom. Twin walk-in wardrobes and an en suite with dual vanity basins and bathtub are salient features here.

Next comes an open, carpeted lounge room, beyond which are steps heading down to the middle level where there are three bedrooms with wardrobes, and the sparkling main bathroom and laundry.

The bottom level is all about relaxation and downtime, with dining and sitting zones wrapped around a large kitchen. A good-sized breakfast bench is under modern strip lighting, and there’s plenty of storage, a dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop in the cook’s domain.

Through sliders from the meals area,

there’s a covered deck – sheltered on three sides – which looks out onto a sizeable stretch of sealed aggregate, rimmed by garden beds. Next to here is a good wedge of lawn and, around the side, a series of irrigated, oval corrugated-iron herb/vegie containers form a focus in what’s virtually a courtyard. The neatness and stylishness of the landscaping design seen kerbside is reected throughout – this is truly a ‘nished’ property. Even behind the back fence there are tall gums which create a lovely leafy outlook.

And there’s more: ducted heating, evaporative cooling, a water tank, feature garden lights and a double garage with rear access to a huge concrete area for boat/caravan parking.

For those who value being within easy reach of all that Sunbury has on offer, and want a ready-made place to call home, this one deserves a solid entry on any house hunter’s list.

“TEMPERATURES PLUMMET”As winter sets in and temperatures drop to icy depths

our heating costs go up and up and we have to ask “is

there anything we can do?”

In short, yes, there are some simple and sometimes

old fashioned ways to save on the winter heating

bill. Blinds and curtains: keeping blinds and curtains

closed goes a long way towards maintaining the heat

in the house. Have you tried putting your hand on the

window on these cold days – the cold coming through

the glass is quite extraordinary and of course the heat

escapes in the same way. Keep the heating on but

down – sounds strange doesn’t it. Keeping ducted

heating or split systems at 19-20 degrees and leaving

the heating on is less expensive than trying to heat a

cold house to 25-30 degrees and it’s healthier as well.

Many of us have wood heaters and wood is becoming

very expensive. Try mixing the wood, some dense,

slow burning wood mixed with cheaper fast burning

wood and, once again, keep the fire burning. A low

burning fire which goes all day takes the chill out of

the house and keeps the house dry.

We are all feeling the pinch these days and any simple

ways of saving money can help. Perhaps you have

some great cost saving ideas; I would love to hear

from you. Sharing ideas can help everyone so drop in

to the office or send an email to info@chessproperty.

Real Estate Today

54 Evans Street, Sunbury 9744 255540 Aitken Street, Gisborne 5428 2800 Leaders in Real Estate Excellence

Not only is in real estate a good investment, it’s a great one at the moment. There are a number of

reasons for this. Firstly, the real estate market generally is in coming out of a period of stagnation in

prices and activity. Prices around Australia and in our area particularly, are moving upwards and there

is in considerable interest by prospective investors in buying good real estate. Secondly, interest rates

are, in historical terms, lower than they have been for many years. At the time of writing the Reserve

Bank cash rate is in fixed at 2% and home loans are available, depending on the particular terms and

circumstances, at around 4.0% or a little more. Thirdly, homes tend to increase in value as time goes by.

You build up equity in the home as you pay off your mortgage. Your “equity” is in the difference between

the value of your home and your mortgage debt.

The combination of debt reduction over time and increase in property value can mean that the value of

your equity gradually increases. And then the clincher. You actually own the land and premises in which

you and your family live and have security and permanence not usually available to one who rents. If

we can assist you on any real estate matter such as a sale, purchase, letting or development, feel free

to contact me John Dunlop on 9744 2555 at any time or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and

Gisborne for a confidential talk.

28 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 7, 2015

SPORT

By Tara Murray

A logjam is developing at the top of the Riddell District Football League ladder and Rupertswood is right in the middle of it.

e Sharks, second on the ladder, are one of four teams equal on points and separated only by percentage.

e four face each other this weekend.Sharks coach Ben Jordan said he wasn’t

concerned just yet about where his side would nish on the ladder.

“We know we have tough games to come,” he said. “We don’t look too closely to where we’ll nish until the last three or four weeks of the season. We’re trying to focus on each task as we come to it.

“We have Sunbury Kangaroos up there this week and it doesn’t get bigger than that.”

On Saturday, the Sharks were made to work hard against Macedon, which also is looking to

Tight ght for Sharksshore up a nals spot. e Sharks won 9.11 (65) - 8.10 (58) at Rupertswood Oval.

e rst half was even, with the Sharks making the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

It was the third quarter which turned the game in the Sharks’ favour.

“We had a lot of the ball in the third quarter,” Jordan said.

“We were a bit wasteful up forward and started bombing away. We thought we could have been further up.”

e Cats came back at them in the last quarter.

“I wouldn’t say we ran out of legs, I’d say we made some poor decisions in the last quarter,” Jordan said. “ey were always going to throw everything at is. We let it out of our half easily and they kick a goal.

“We give away a 50-metre penalty and they get a goal. ey’re such a dangerous side.

“We worked really hard to get a decent lead and that’s what won us the game.”

Cats coach Je Andrews said he was disappointed with the rst three quarters.

“I thought we didn’t play well until the game was nearly over,” he said. “It showed good character to get back into the game.

“We need to win one of these games against a top side to get some belief and condence. No one has beaten us easily.”

He said injuries had taken its toll as well.“ree weeks ago eight players missed out on

playing in reserves,” he said. “is week we had to ring around to get

players.”In other weekend results, Riddell continued

its good form with a win over Sunbury Kangaroos, Romsey overcame Lanceeld, Woodend-Hesket beat Kilmore, Diggers Rest beat Rockbank and Broadford defeated Melton Centrals.

Tigers still in touch with nals contendersEvery game is a nal for Kyneton in the run home to the end of the season.

e Tigers entered Saturday’s Bendigo Football League match against local rival Gisborne as one of four teams ghting for the h and nal spot in the nals’ mix.

e Tigers did no harm to their chances with a 14.12 (96) – 13.16 (94) win, diminishing the Bulldogs’ hopes in the process. Tigers football manager Rick Egan said the win was vital, in the scheme of things.

“It was critical that we won the game. Whoever lost, their season was over,” Egan said. “Every time we play Gisborne, it is like a nal, but this was even bigger.

“We were fortunate to come out on top. It’s the rst time in at least 12 years we’ve beaten them twice in the one season.”

Egan said the win was set up aer quarter-time.

“e rst quarter, the game was in the balance.

“In the second quarter, the game opened up for us and it looked like we were in control of the game.

“Full credit to Gisborne, they never gave up.”Egan said the nerves came out on the sidelines

when the Bulldogs got to within a point.“We still felt we had control of the game,” he

said. “One kick could have changed that. We controlled the stoppages and, at one stage, the scores were level.

“Credit to our boys, they ran out the game – one of the rst times we’ve ran out four quarters all year.”

Ben Weightman kicked six goals for the Tigers and Matthew Knox kicked ve for the Bulldogs.

“Both made the most of their opportunities when they came to them,” Egan said.

Gisborne’s Ollie Messaoudi tries to break clear of Kyneton’s Jake Hyland and Ben Weightman. (Shawn Smits)

e Tigers sit in sixth spot and are aware of the challenge ahead.

“We need to play with the same passion we played with on Saturday, and play for each other,” Egan said. “We have the skill and some really good players; we need to have the right attitude, and put it all together.

“Every game is like a nal now. We can’t aord to lose games we are expected to win, and need to win games which we aren’t favourites.”

Egan said Ryan Carafa would miss the rest of the season aer being injured two weeks ago. Carafa joins captain Michael Rainey on the sidelines for the rest of the year.

In A-grade netball, the Bulldogs gave the Tigers’ nals hopes a hit, winning 38-34 to sit third on the ladder, while the Tigers are in seventh place, two games outside the top ve.

Diggers Rest Bulla Cricket Club doesn’t just want to make up numbers for its foray back into Gisborne District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

Last season’s B-grade premiers have stepped up the hunt for new players to add to the premiership squad, and are also on the hunt for a new coach.

Burras’ president Sean Fitzpatrick said Rhys Berry had stepped down from the role, despite winning two premierships from three grand nal appearances in the past three seasons.

“He [Rhys] is pretty seless and said, if you can nd someone more qualied, I’m willing to step down.

“He will help out assisting and be assistant coach. He is happy to do what we need him to.

“ere is a chance he could still coach the side. e worry is, if you go down a dierent path, you could lose players, but that’s not the case [here].”

Berry, the side’s star bowler, will still play for Diggers Rest Bulla.

“He is a very good player, who we can not aord to lose.”

Fitzpatrick said the club had spoken to some people about taking on the coaching role.

“We’ve had a couple of interviews but nothing is set in stone. We are aer a playing coach, who needs to be a quality player up to McIntyre standard.

“He needs to be a total club coach, not just someone who focuses on the senior guys. We are looking at developing our youngsters.”

Fitzpatrick said there would be some personnel changes in the senior side.

Shannon O’Keefe has retired, while a couple of players living in the Castlemaine area, including Rhys’s brother Warren, aren’t sure they will return.

“We are still trying to talk them into playing, even in a part-time role. We need batsmen, another bowler and a wicketkeeper to compete in McIntyre. We are also looking for some depth for our seconds and thirds.”

e club said it was hopeful of elding three junior sides and get Milo [have a go] cricket running again.

Meanwhile, Woodend is still on the hunt for a coach.

e club is looking for a replacement aer Adam Johnstone stood down due to other commitments.

B-grade club Rupertswood is expected to appoint its coach in the next few weeks.

When Sunbury Soball Association started its development academy last season, it didn’t expect to have immediate success.

Set up by former Victorian soball players Danielle Baxter and Kathy Bedwell, the academy was established with the aim of helping soballers take the next step up from club level.

Baxter said the academy had exceeded all expectations.

“We started training the kids with a few sessions during the season,” she said. “We had kids between the age of 12 and 18 and wanted to help them go the next level.

“I was hoping to get one kid in a Victorian squad. Once we started training, we realised that we could have a couple push through.”

She said there had been comments at Victorian squads trials about Sunbury’s soballing strength.

Aer the trials, ve soballers were named in Victorian squads.

Cooper Coyne, Brandon Vucica and Jakob Feist were picked in the under-12 Victorian schools team to compete in November.

ose three boys, along with Callum Dickie, were selected for the under-13 Victorian development team.

Brayden McTigue has made the under-17 Victorian squad and is still trialling to make the nal team.

For Baxter, the next step for the academy is to increase participation and hopefully see some players make Australian teams.

“We want to get more female involvement in the academy,” she said. “We didn’t have any females choose to trial for the state teams.

“It [the academy] is a good base for boys and girls who can go through it together and hopefully make Australian squads in the future.”

When the margin is 100 points at the end of the game, you would think that it was a one-sided aair.

But this wasn’t the case between Sunbury and Sebastopol in their Ballarat Football League match. e Lions won 19.18 (132) – 4.8 (32), and could have won by a lot more if not for inaccurate kicking in front of goal. Coach Rick Horwood said the tally didn’t reect the game.

“It was a hard-fought game and didn’t reect the eort from Sebastopol. ey are very well

coached, very disciplined and erce at the ball and the man. You can learn a lot from them about commitment and never giving up.

“ere was little patches of the game we broke open, and that was the dierence.”

Horwood said when his side controlled the game, they didn’t get rewards for their eorts, and not for the rst time this season.

“We were 3.7 in the rst quarter; 7.3 would have been nice, and some of those shots weren’t that hard,” Horwood said.

Lions lick wounds despite clawing back to top sixOne of the main culprits was Ben Said on his

return to the side.“He kicked 8.8 and should have had at least 10

goals. He was fairly dominant,” Horwood said. While Said returned, the Lions’ injury curse

continued. It lost Jesse Flannery in the rst quarter with an ankle injury, Adam Short with a calf injury, and Jack Sheahan knocked his hip in the second quarter.

“Josh Burgess was a late withdrawal and Hay missed again. Xavier Linton, who was set to

return, got injured again at training,” Horwood said.

While it may not have been an ideal win, the percentage gained is important in the Lions’ ght to make nals; the side is back in the top six.

“If you do the ladder predictor … there’s three teams that nish on the same points, if things go the way people think they should.”

Rupertswood, nally given the opportunity to see where it sits compared with ladder leaders in the Riddell District League Netball, came away with a convincing 68-27 win.

But it didn’t necessarily provide the Sharks with the test and answers they were expecting.

Macedon, which had a week of o-court drama with the club terminating their coach’s contract, elded a dierent outt on Saturday to the one that tested Riddell the week before.

e Sharks themselves were missing three from their normal squad.

e Cats took a while to get going and the Sharks, with superior mid-court pace, made them pay early.

For the Sharks, Maddison Gay, Ebony Lyons

Sharks seeking sterner testsand Ailish McCormack made the most of the turnovers at the defensive end to get the ball to the shooters under the ring. e Sharks’ 20-6 quarter-time lead was an accurate indicator of how the rest of the game would unfold.

It didn’t matter who the Sharks brought on; they were all able to t straight in and have an impact.

Sharks coach Di McCormack said the key was to shut down star Macedon goalshooter Bec Colwell.

“Kirsten [Daley] and Tess [Abbott] were outstanding in the circle,” she said.

“ey worked hard on shutting down Bec. It started in the mid-court and shutting down the feed; the skill and speed of the girls was fantastic.

“I didn’t know who to keep on and who to take o at each break.”

But McCormack said the match didn’t

Macedon Netball Club is looking to the future after parting ways with its A-grade netball coach last week. President Terry Kernan said the club terminated Melissa Climas’s services, but he wouldn’t go into details. “There were various things, including a serious code violation,” he said. “There were several other issues … we decided as a club we had to move forward.” Former players Karri Ambler and Kelly Nicholas will coach for the rest of the year. Kernan said that at this stage all but one player would continue to play. Captain Alexis Climas resigned following Melissa’s sacking.

Cats ditch netball coachprovide them with the test they wanted even as the Sharks move to second on the ladder, switching places with the Cats.

“It wasn’t a good measure,” McCormack said. “We are playing a good standard, but the last few weeks we haven’t been tested.

“It’s good to get these scores … it shows our transition is fast, but we want to compare ourselves against the top sides.”

McCormack is condent the Sharks will “take it to” undefeated Riddell.

However, the coach will miss games while volunteering at the Netball World Cup in Sydney. Assistant coach Katie Clarke will step up while she’s away.

In other results, Romsey defeated Lanceeld, Riddell was too good for Sunbury, Diggers Rest won against Rockbank, and Woodend-Hesket got its second win of the season, against Kilmore.

With nals in sight, Jets youth teams show the way Sunbury Jets’ two youth sides are ready to make an impact come the Big V basketball nals.

Both the men’s youth league division 1 and women’s youth league division 2 teams started the season on re and are looking at top two nishes.

For the women’s youth side, it will be a rst nals appearance since entering the competition in 2011.

Youth women’s coach Andrew Seidel says his players are still keeping it cool in regards to making nals.

“No one has said anything yet,” Seidel said before the weekend’s games. But it was still the side’s aim, he acknowledged.

“On percentage, we can still nish top of

the ladder, but the rst thing is to make nals. At the end of the day, getting through to nals is a big bonus. To win them would be lovely.”

Aer winning both games at the weekend against Blackburn and Keilor, the girls are, in fact, guaranteed of making those nals.

Seidel says the side’s match-up with Camberwell on Saturday night at Boardman Stadium will test where it’s at – a win could mean a move to the top of the ladder.

“It’s a crunch game. e last two times we’ve played them, they have beaten us on their home court.

“We are hoping that, at home and in front of a big crowd, we can get a win.”

Sunbury’s youth men’s coach, Andrew Atherton, wants to build on last year’s nals appearance.

“We would love to nish top two, which gives you the double chance, and we have a reasonable chance of winning the rest of our matches.

“To make the grand nal would be the next step, and I’ve thought all along we are one of the top two teams.”

Atherton said the side had bounced back from a mid-season slump that saw losses before the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

“e workload of the boys playing in both the youth and senior men’s teams had caused a bit of fatigue,” Atherton conceded. “But we’ve won four of our last ve games.”

At the weekend, the Jets won both matches, against Altona and Hume City, easily.

e side sits second on the ladder, three games behind leader Blackburn.

e division 1 women’s team won its match against Werribee, while the men’s division 1 side split its weekend double.

‘‘ At the end of the day, getting through to nals is a big bonus ’’ - Andrew Seidel

It isn’t just Australia’s women’s national soccer team who are kicking goals . . . a growing number of girls are turning to soccer. Figures from the Football Federation Victoria website say one in every six registered soccer players in Victoria is female. And Sunbury United president Paul DiBlasi says the Matilda’s success in reaching the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup in Canada has just added to the push for girls to sign up to the ‘world game’.

“We’ve definitely been pushing female participation,” he says. “We’re keen to promote the sport and we want more girls to get involved.

“We have an open-age female team, which includes girls of 15 and 16. In our junior sides we normally have two to three girls in each age group.”

He says the number of girls at the club has increased by five per cent in the past year.

And 15 per cent of all the players at his club are female – up from 10 per cent last year.

“I’m a father of four girls and I want to see a full girls’ team at the club in future,” DiBlasi says.

“We’re close to getting some all-girl sides for next season. And if we could double the number of girls in 2016 that would be really good. It is achievable.”

He says girls as young as five are joining the club.

“We get them straight into teams with coaches to get them going. It’s best to start as young as possible. A lot of the younger ones at the club are girls.”

Girls kick onas soccer wins the female vote

Tayla Venes, Lauren Marsh, Olivia Mancuso and Maxine DiBlasi are among the growing number of girls playing soccer. (Mat Lynn)

DiBlasi says the club realises that girls and boys place a different emphasis on the game.

“It’s more a social thing for girls,” he says. “When the girls are in the same age group we try to keep them together and they go through the sides together.

“Our under-10 teams are both in mixed

competitions and we have kept the four girls in that age group together in the one team.” Sunbury United’s Sunday state league 1 north-west match away at Preston Lions was abandoned after two minutes when Sunbury’s Aaron Turner suffered a broken leg.

Turner fractured the tibia and fibula and dislocated his ankle. He left the field in an ambulance. The match will be rescheduled because less than half of the game had been played.
