‘‘New schools are vital for Craigieburn, Greenvale, Mickleham and Sunbury.’’

e long-awaited Bulla bypass and trac lights at the Gap Road–Horne Street intersection are among other projects the council wants funded when Treasurer Tim Pallas hands down the budget on April 27.

‘‘ Rural councils have smaller budgets … also extensive roads ’’ - Karen Stevens

By Matt Crossman

Better bus services for Sunbury and new schools are among the top items on Hume council’s wishlist ahead of next week’s state budget.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said bus arrivals remained too infrequent, with commuters, including those getting o trains at Sunbury station, oen forced to endure long waits.

Calling on the government to improve Sunbury’s bus timetable, she said many students and senior citizens relied on buses to

access shops, their schools and medical centres.‘‘We don’t want people to be forced to wait up

to 45 minutes, if they only just miss a local bus,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

e council has again urged the government to fund education facilities, with 21 new schools needed across Hume over the next 20 years.

Projections show the number of primary school aged children living in the municipality is expected to soar 65 per cent by 2035.

‘‘Hume is one of the fastest growing communities in Australia,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

Macedon Ranges council’s acting chief executive, Karen Stevens, said the municipality needs better sporting facilities, a safe space for users of Kyneton courthouse and funding for community projects, such as the Greater Romsey All Abilities Park.

Ms Stevens also urged the government to be mindful of the challenges councils face with the introduction of rate-capping.

‘‘Rural councils have smaller budgets … but also extensive road networks and community infrastructure to maintain, in addition to a range of community services.’’

Roads and rates on budget lists

New V/Line data reveals punctuality is an ongoing problem for passengers on the Bendigo line, with only 79.4 per cent of trains running on time during March.

While this is signicantly higher than the 64.2 per cent recorded during the height of January’s regional public transport crisis, the gure is well below the 82.9 per cent recorded last December.

Woodend commuter Robert Knight said while punctuality had improved, overcrowding was a major problem during the morning peak.

‘‘What’s happening is people don’t want to have to catch the bus, so they’re all catching the same morning train,’’ he said. ‘‘By the time you get to Gisborne, they’re ghting for seats, and by Sunbury, you’ve got no hope.’’

V/Line continues to be aected by service reductions, put in place due to faster than normal wheel wear, which has led to hundreds of services being cancelled or replaced by buses.

More than 80,000 refunds have been handed out to aected customers.

A Monash University report released last week found tight curves on sections of the Regional Rail Link, high friction due to the absence of lubrication and wear of both wheels and rail were to blame for the dramas.

In a statement which acknowledged the “unacceptable disruption” for regional train passengers, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said an independent review revealed V/Line had been asked to do “more with less for too long”. Ms Allan said the review made recommendations about improving the structure, governance and capability of V/Line.

Sunbury residents wanting get rid of old fridges, washing machines, televisions and computers are being given a helping hand as part of a free Hume council event. Unwanted dryers, speakers, mobile phones and other household appliances can also be disposed of at the council’s McDougall Road depot as part of this weekend’s Second Hand Saturday. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou says council workers will accept goods – and even mattressess and clothes – from 9am-4pm. The council intends to recycle many of the items. ‘‘This is a really handy day,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou says. ‘‘The long weekend offers the perfect chance to give the home a real tidy up.’’ Residents can dispose of up to 15 items. The Sunbury depot is at 17-19 McDougall Road. Details: 9205 2200

Dreams of a rst-class netball complex in the Macedon Ranges became reality on Sunday, when the wraps were nally taken o a $2.65 million centre at New Gisborne.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas, Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie and councillors were on hand for the opening of the regional netball complex at the corner of Barringo and Hamilton roads.

A new pavilion features a multi-purpose room, storerooms, kitchen, change room, rst-aid room and public toilets. It’s surrounded by water tanks, a warm-up area, pathways and landscaping.

e pavilion was the nal stage of a major development that included the opening of

an eight-court facility in late 2014. Macedon Ranges Netball Association president Lisa Russ said Sunday’s ceremony marked the end of a long journey.

‘‘It’s just phenomenal for the region and has already had a major impact on participation,’’ she said.

‘‘We have up to 81 teams using the complex every Saturday now.

‘‘Previously, the competition involved teams from around Gisborne and Macedon,” Ms Russ said.

“But now we’re getting sides from Woodend, Lanceeld and Kyneton as well.’’

e project was funded by state and federal governments, the council and MRNA.

Respect and resources are the key ingredients needed to help aged care providers such as Macedon Ranges Health deal with a ‘‘tsunami’’ of dementia cases, a Gisborne forum heard last week.

Federal opposition ageing spokesman Shayne Neumann and McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell heard from carers, patients and sta at MRH’s Gisborne Oaks aged care home, who demanded an immediate response to the crisis

be placed on keeping people out of residential aged care for as long as possible.

He said councils had a large role to play.‘‘When they’re designing parks, our bus

stops, our walkways … as communities we need to be thinking what we can do to make them work for older people too.’’

e need for greater support, including respite, for carers dealing with the agonising decline of a loved one was also something that came through loud and clear.

‘‘We simply have to do more,’’ Mr Neumann

facing the area. Projections show McEwen will have the state’s second-highest incidence of dementia by 2050, with prevalence tipped to soar by 754.1 per cent.

Mr Neumann, who slammed the government for slashing aged care and dementia funding, said the nation needed to prioritise the issues.

‘‘We cannot show respect without providing the necessary resources,’’ he said. ‘‘You can’t keep cutting funding for dementia support and say you care.’’

Mr Neumann also called for greater focus to

said. ‘‘A society is a community, not an economy.’’

MRH chief executive Don Tidbury said the expansion of dementia services was high on his agenda.

‘‘e Macedon Ranges will experience a tsunami of ageing and dementia demand,’’ he said. ‘‘Over the next 10 years the number of people over 80 living in this area will nearly triple. is region will be experiencing a dementia crisis unless capacity and funding can be found.’’

Dementia will grow into ‘tsunami’

Champion racehorse Subzero received a warm welcome during a tour of Macedon Ranges last Tuesday. Children and seniors alike were wowed by the 16-hand high ‘Subbie’, who visited Woodend and Hesket primary schools and BUPA Aged Care as part of a Racing Victoria education program. A BUPA spokeswoman said residents of the Woodend aged care centre were in raptures when the 1992 Melbourne Cup winner was led through the front doors and into the recreation hall. ‘‘They were just in awe of his size … so many of the residents just lit up when they saw him. Many of them have a farming background and they just relished the chance to feed him a carrot and give him a pat.’’

Aldi is a step closer to opening a supermarket in Gisborne, with Macedon Ranges council deciding to deal only with the grocery chain for the sale of a 2025-square-metre block of land at 51 Aitken Street for a carpark.

Councillors last week approved a recommendation to sell the land, long earmarked for a carpark, to Aldi for $600,000, having overturned an earlier decision to seek expressions of interest from any interested parties.

As reported by Star Weekly, Aldi is preparing a planning application for a supermarket on another block.

Cr John Letchford was among those who said contamination of the former Shire of Gisborne depot site would aect land value.

But council corporate services director Glenn Owens conrmed to Star Weekly that monitoring was restricted to an adjoining lot, at 49 Aitken Street, and had ceased in 2015.

No mention of contamination was made in either report to council.

‘‘is history is not relevant to the current proposal to construct a carpark on lot 4 [51 Aitken Street],’’ Mr Owens said aer the meeting.

e original decision over an open expressions of interest process was passed last month on mayor Graham Hackett’s casting vote. But with Cr Henry McLaughlin back in the chamber last Wednesday, Cr Russell Mowatt’s push to search for the best

possible price was defeated. Cr Mowatt had argued there was no need for a ‘‘re sale’’ at $600,000 when the land could be worth much more.

‘‘What is the site’s true worth? We certainly don’t know if we go ahead and sell it by private treaty,’’ he said. ‘‘As a council, have we explored all options? I have my doubts.’’

Cr Mowatt also argued the council could have a conict of interest when it came to decide on a future Aldi planning permit.

Cr Letchford said it would be mischievous to say due diligence had not been carried for the carpark application, while Cr Sally Piper said the council had an opportunity to make a sale that would have far-reaching community benets.

“is is the closest parcel of land to the CBD which can oer a way to reduce the carparking shortage,” she said. “We also know this land is not suitable for anything else than a carpark and comparisons with other sales nearby are irrelevant.”

Cr McLaughlin said the resulting consultation process could still attract other developers.

Submissions about the planned sale will be considered at a meeting on May 11.

Land deal win for Aldi hopes

‘‘ As a council, have we explored all the options? ’’ - Russell Mowatt

When Sunbury Community Health opened its doors in 1976 it had just four sta, including a community health nurse, social worker, part-time physiotherapist and a secretary.

Rising to the challenge of massive population growth and major changes, including the collapse of Ansett, the organisation’s 200 employees and army of volunteers now provide more than 30 services.

Past and present sta, supporters and volunteers helped SCH celebrate its 40th anniversary at Sunbury Memorial Hall on Saturday night.

Board chairman Peter Donlon said community input and involvement were reasons the award-winning service is successful.

‘‘ere is always more demand than resources available, so great strategic planning is also necessary,’’ Mr Donlon said.

Key service areas of SCH, which in 2015 won the Premier’s award for primary health service of the year, range from aged care activity groups to counselling, family day care, dental services and preventative health programs.

Retired social worker Annie Adams, who was there when SCH began, said the physical growth of the sprawling Macedon Street service was a clear indicator of its ever-increasing value.

‘‘Sunbury Community Health can be proud of its responses to our town’s health and wellbeing needs.”

“ We’d looked at otherresorts and nothing even closely

compared to what Palm Lake offers ”

It was the all-weather bowling green that rst interested Bob and Joan when they were thinking about moving into Palm Lake Resort at Truganina.

Both agreed they were onto a winner when they attended one of the resort’s regular open days, and were impressed with the bowling facility, fully equipped gymnasium, pool, library, craft activities and much more.

Bob and Joan placed a $1000 deposit on their new home soon afterwards and have now been happily living at Palm Lake Resort for almost two years.

“We’d looked at other resorts and nothing even closely compared to what Palm Lake offers here,” Joan says. “It was a big thing for us to know that our grandchildren were able to come and visit and stay over with us. They’ve been in and shared a few laughs over a game of table tennis in the clubhouse.

“We are very happy we’ve made the move.”

Palm Lake Resort Truganina has an indoor heated pool and spa, a luxurious 50-seat air-conditioned

cinema, nine-hole mini golf, darts, pool, snooker in the fully equipped Charlton Room, bocce and aqua aerobics.

There are no entry fees, no stamp duty when purchasing, and a low fortnightly site fee covers all council rates, garbage disposal and unlimited use of all the facilities the resort has to offer.

Dwellings start from $298,000 and purchasers keep 100 per cent of their capital gain. Stage 1 and 2 are sold out and Stage 3 is selling fast.

Rental assistance may be available for those who qualify through Centrelink or Veteran Affairs.

Palm Lake Resort, 7 Taronga Road, Truganina. Open every day for tours. To book an appointment or for more information, call 1800 686 096

A great country property of about 40 hectares, this is an ideal set-up for horse-lovers with well-fenced areas at the front, while out back would suit cattle or sheep as well. There’s a secure tack room, a new shed with three stables, a wash bay, drive-through access for a horse oat, a holding yard and potential for either extra stables or feed storage. The beautifully maintained house has four large bedrooms, each with a wardrobe, sharing a bright bathroom and separate toilet. The large laundry acts as a mud room and has a second toilet. A tiled family-meals area has painted dado walls and french doors opening to the deep wrap-around verandah. The all-white kitchen has an electric cooktop, wall oven, dishwasher and great views from the sink. A Colorbond shed with sliding doors is perfect for machinery, workshop or car accommodation. An abundance of tank water and a bore are other features at this place, which is just ve minutes from Lanceeld.

A picturesque property of about 0.81 hectares, Binya includes a house as distinctive as its gardens are magnicent. Loaded with whimsical charm, it has slate-tiled oors, soaring timber-lined cathedral ceilings, lots of windows with views, and dados and walls painted white to leaven the timber. Two downstairs bedrooms have wardrobes and share a bathroom and separate toilet. Two upstairs include the main with walk-in wardrobe and shared bathroom. A mezzanine retreat space here embodies the architectural charm. The huge, carpeted family-meals area (wood heater) adjoins a kitchen with walk-in pantry and all mod-cons. The next-door dining room is octagonal-shaped under a pitched ceiling and with masses of windows. Outside, stone pathways among garden beds with the bush as a backdrop cement this place as a family haven or weekender. LPG ducted heating, tank and bore water, sheds, workshop and double carport are other attractions.

Set on a corner block, this property has potential as a bed and breakfast and is a ve-minute walk from the centre of Trentham. Near new, the house has three bedrooms – two upstairs have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom, while the huge ground oor main bedroom has an en suite with tub and access to a side porch. There’s also a downstairs living area that could double as guest accommodation or a fourth bedroom – it has an en suite with its own entrance and an alfresco area. There is a solid fuel wood heater and split-system in the family-meals zone, and the kitchen has a baby blue glass splashback, gas cooktop, underbench oven and a dishwasher. The covered alfresco is tted with cafe blinds and looks over gardens. The house is located about an hour from the Bolte Bridge and is 20 minutes away from Daylesford, Kyneton and Woodend.

With intricate cornices, detailed ceiling rosettes, old-world light ttings and timber-lined ceilings, this big house on about 1100 square metres is an attractive family package. It has three bedrooms (two with walk-in wardrobes and one with a built-in) and a study (or fourth bedroom). The main bathroom has a spa. There’s a separate dining room, separate lounge room (with cast iron replace) and a large family room with a built-in bar and gas heater. The timber kitchen has display cabinetry, freestanding cooker, dishwasher and ample bench and cupboard space. At the rear is a studio equipped with kitchenette, separate toilet and living space. There’s also a gazebo and undercover outdoor area. Stairs from the double garage/workshop lead to under-house storage, a cellar and separate undercover carport.

Developers are likely to be doing their sums on this great property, because 7327 square metres in a fab location offers options to play with, subject to council approval.

It will also tempt families – the house is large and the land is dream-catching – and acionados of the ‘70s will relish this time capsule. It has every original element intact and in its day would have been highly admired.

And it’s still admirable. Exposed brick

walls, timber-lined ceilings and exposed beams, ower-power oor tiles, tiled benchtops, cedar wall panels and window frames, louvred cabinetry – the signatures of c1976. It’s the kind of rock solid place that would respond beautifully to a clever ‘contemporary interpretation’ makeover.

Entry under a porte cochere is into a cosy, carpeted lounge room (with wood heater), and a tiled dining room next door links with a study. The tiled kitchen-meals area adjoins a carpeted sitting room, which

also connects with the lounge room. A pantry cupboard, island bench, dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm electric cooktop equip the kitchen.

Four bedrooms and the large main bathroom are up one end. Three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes while the main has a walk-in. The en suite incorporates a sauna, beyond which is a door to a brick-paved pergola covered in wisteria – this is also accessed from the meals area.

extended paving sits next to a wood-red barbecue. Beyond this comes the vast backyard, dotted with giant ash trees and rock-edged garden beds. At the bottom of the block, there’s a large orchard.

A workshop/storage shed of about 24x7metres, an open machinery shed of about 5.4x6.6 metres, and an extra-big double garage with internal access are other keynotes.

31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 19, 2016

SPORT

By Tara Murray

Diggers Rest turned it on the in the last quarter to overcome Riddell in the Riddell District Football League round 1 clash on Saturday.

Aer a scrappy rst two quarters, when both sides struggled in windy and wet conditions, the Burras kicked two late goals to take a half-time lead.

e Bombers appeared to have taken control of the game with ve goals to nil in the third quarter to lead by 15.

But it was all the Burras in the nal quarter at Bloomdale Oval, as they won most of the ball and went on to win 11.13 (79)-7.6 (48).

Burras’ coach Shaun Sims said he was just happy to come away with the win against a side he expected to be up there at the end of the season.

“It wasn’t pretty footy in the rst half that’s for sure,” he said.

“We were prepared for a team which nished on top of the ladder last year. ey have recruited well, have a new coach and a bit of enthusiasm about them, so to get the win was the most important thing.

“e rst couple of quarters were a grind and the conditions weren’t great. Basically, they were winning the footy.”

Sims said there was one major dierence with his side in the last quarter.

“I think we played some better footy; we were very clean and it showed,” he said.

“I don’t think they went inside 50 in the last quarter.

“You’re very happy any time you play a top-three side and get the win. You’ll take it.”

Sims said he was impressed by Brandon Kilty, who kept Paul Sahlberg quiet for most of the match, while Mick Kilty turned the game in the last quarter with three goals.

It was a good day for the Burras with all three sides getting good wins.

“e depth is really good,” Sims said. “We had ve to six blokes [in lower grades]

who put up their hands up to play seniors next week.

“It’s a good place to be. People are going to have to perform to keep their spots.”

One person who won’t be playing for the Burras this season is Jason Williams.

Sims was already expecting to be without Williams because of his VFL commitments with Port Melbourne, but the player is now seeking a clearance to move to Broadford.

“He had a really good opportunity,” Sims said. “He spoke to me and I said he should take it.”

Rupertswood, Sunbury Kangaroos and Macedon were the other weekend winners.

East Sunbury will join forces with Sunbury RSL on Saturday to pay tribute to servicemen and women as part of Anzac Day commemorations.

under president Keith Osborne said the club wants to form an ongoing relationship with the RSL to help its members properly understand the importance of the day.

“It’s pretty prestigious playing on the Anzac Day weekend,” Osborne said.

“We’re the new boys on the block and we haven’t had this opportunity before to do something like this.”

Sunbury RSL president Graeme Williams said having sporting clubs involved in Anzac Day matches was a good way to get more people involved in celebrating what is a special day in Australian history.

“It’s a good way to educate people about history of Anzac Day and what’s happened in our history,” Williams said.

“We’ve had whole sporting clubs involved … with their players coming to the service.

“It’s good to have them involved and it’s good for the community for us to come out to sporting clubs.”

e RSL has given the under an Australian ag to display at the club, and will join in the commemorations at John McMahon Reserve at Goonawarra before the senior game against East Keilor.

Jeb Summers, who’s a member of both the RSL and football club, will also be involved.

“We’ve involved Jeb in the ceremony,” Osborne said.

“He’s not playing this year due to injury.

“But he’ll do a presentation before the game,” Summer said.

“It’s about educating, not just the older members, but the younger members as well.”

ere will be badges on sale on Saturday to raise money for the RSL.

Sunbury RSL has two Anzac Day services on Monday, a dawn service at 6am and a parade and service from 10am.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the under was beaten by a fast nishing Jacana.

e under led by 16 points at three-quarter time. But the Jaguars kicked ve goals to one in the nal term to seal the win, 10.12 (72)- 9.10 (64).

Jason McMahon and Aaron Aquilina were best for the under in their loss.

Thunder, RSL join forces for Anzac Day

Kyneton survives Bulldogs’ ghting spiritKyneton took the points in the season opener against Macedon Ranges rival Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League.

As usual in clashes between the two sides, it was a hard-fought contest and it was only in the nal quarter that the Tigers were able to get away from the young Bulldogs.

e Tigers started better and looked to be headed for an easy win when they led by 19 points at half-time.

e Bulldogs, though, kept ghting, not allowing the Tigers to escape. Only 14 points down at three-quarter time, the Bulldogs would have still given themselves a chance.

Kicking four goals to two in the nal term, the Tigers got the four points with a 16.18 (114)-12.10 (82) win.

Ben Weightman kicked ve goals for the Tigers and Rhys Magin was named best on ground. Jack Scanlon kicked six goals for the Bulldogs to be among the best with Anthony Belcher and Trent Crosbie.

Meanwhile, Anzac Day will take on extra signicance for Gisborne Football Netball Club this year.

Gisborne will host its third annual Anzac clash with Golden Square on the same day it holds the biggest past players’ day function in the club’s history. Having collated the names of more than 1000 former players, coaches and ocials, the club is looking to get as many as possible to the game.

Former coach and player Luke Saunders said it was about thanking the people who had been involved at the club.

“Hopefully, it will be good day with past players, as over the last 10 years we haven’t made a big focus of keeping in contact with past players, coaches and ocials,” he said.

“We’ve had close to 1000 people come through the club in the last 20 years.

“is is about appreciating this people, whether they’ve been at the club one year or 10 years.

“It would be good to get 100-200 people at the luncheon.”

e club will also honour its 2006 senior football side and under-17 netball side, which won premierships that year.

e football team defeated Golden Square in the 2006 grand nal and Saunders was part of the winning team.

“Nearly all the football team will be there,” he said. “It was a really good year … we lost only one or two games. It was our fourth ag in ve years.”

is year the senior football and netball games will start at the later time of 4.30pm to allow supporters to attend Anzac Day services before the matches.

e players function will start at 2pm.To attend the function: www.trybooking.

Riddell started the new season the way they nished the last – with a big win.

e reigning Riddell District Netball League premiers kicked o their 2016 campaign with a strong win over a new-look Diggers Rest, winning 52-27.

e Bombers controlled the game from the opening whistle, and the result never looked in doubt.

Bombers’ coach Jarrod Walker said while he was happy with getting a win rst up, there was things that the side would have to work on.

“I’m happy to get the win and also identied a lot of things we can work improve on across the next couple of weeks.

“In training, we sewed it all together well. I think, today, rst-round nerves hit a couple of players, but we’re bringing through some youth, which is exciting for the area.

“We need to work on our transition. Getting the ball out of defence was good, but it’s the linking to the attacking end we need to work on. I feel our attack end is our biggest asset, and we didn’t use it well at all today. “

Like their opposition, the Bombers were a dierent looking line-up to the one that played last season.

Walker didn’t hesitate to switch players around as they looked to nd the right mix. He also made the most of the new time-out rule.

“We’re going to look to see how we can use the new time-out rules for netball, to see whether it’ll impact us to run them on and o the bench, or have the players play the whole

15 minutes. We thought today would be a good day to try it, to see how it will go.”

Two of the Bombers’ best players were new defender Sarah King and Cayley Armstrong, who returns to the team aer missing last year through injury.

“Sarah is a young under-19 player from the city. She just needs a bit of extra work so we brought her out here to get a bit more experience.

“Cayley has a fantastic game. She’s back in the form where she’s comfortable and really condent.”

Burras’ coach Amy Carroll said it was a disappointing way to start the season.

“It was really tough, actually,” she said.“It was pretty disappointing the way it

panned out. e actual game itself wasn’t too bad, we just didn’t put the score on the board.

“Defensively, I think we did really well. I don’t think our attacking end was up to it.”

Carroll said she expected the team to build as the season went on, with several new players on the team.

“e whole attack end really hasn’t played together before our rst game, which really tested us, and I think that was visible.

“e defensive end [of Stephanie Barnes, Jena Baboth and Tayla Behan] has played together [at Romsey] which you could see.”

e Bombers weren’t the only side with a big win; Rupertswood, Romsey and Macedon also had dominant matches.

Import gets a clear path to Sunbury’s Big V teamIf you’d told new Sunbury Jets’ import Courtney Duever six weeks ago she would be playing Big V basketball in Australia this season, she would have thought you were pulling her leg.

Aer played basketball at college and then in Bulgaria, the 24-year-old spent the past eight months coaching back in the States.

en a conversation with one of her college teammates about a month ago set things on a le-eld path that brought her to Sunbury last Wednesday.

“I was kind of just working out, as in the States they just don’t have games everywhere,” she said. “I talked to a player on my college team who was from New Zealand, and I asked her what was going on over here with basketball.

“She gave me Kennedy’s email address … I emailed him and said I was interested in playing, and it evolved from there as there was a spot open.”

Duever’s arrival at the Jets gives the team

more back-up in forward and centre positions, which will come in handy, especially as Jess Bygate is away on national duty with New Zealand’s Tall Ferns.

Joining a team already three rounds into the season, Duever said she will try and take it all in as she learns about how the game is played in Australia.

“I haven’t watched any [Big V] basketball,” she said. “I’m not really sure what to expect.

“I’ll sit back and watch how it all plays out, and work out where I t into the mix and work out all the plays and the pace of the game.

“I’ll watch a little bit and jump in when I can.”She didn’t have to wait long to step onto the

court, suiting up for the Jets in a weekend double header against Werribee and Craigieburn.

Duever had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists on Saturday night against Werribee, and backed up with 26 points on Sunday against Craigieburn.

e Jets won both games easily and are undefeated.

Duever, who describes herself as an aggressive player, says she’s using her time in Australia to continue doing what she loves most.

“I want to try and give 100 per cent, and see where it leads me.

“If it leads to me staying here, to the WNBL or even the WNBA, we’ll see.

“Its about going as hard as I can and working at becoming better every day,” Duever said.

e men’s side split their matches, with a win over Chelsea and a loss to La Trobe City. Ish Sanders was the standout for the Jets, scoring 39 points on Saturday, backed up by 48 on Sunday.

Sunbury Lions were le to rue missed opportunities as they suered a rst-round loss to Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League.

e Lions led at three-quarter time but were smashed in the mideld in the last quarter, allowing the Cobras to set up several attacking forays.

ey didn’t waste those opportunities scoring ve goals to one in the last quarter to win 13.12 (90)-10.11 (71).

Lions’ coach Rick Horwood was disappointed with the result but said there was many positives to take out of the game.

“We were in the contest for 90 to 95 per cent of the game,” Horwood said.

“In a nutshell, we didn’t take the most of our opportunities and were punished for our mistakes.

“Our decision-making let us down. It’s round one so I’m not overly concerned. It’s real basic stu that we can x.”

e Lions missed a shot on the siren in the third quarter that would’ve put them up by 10 points and then struggled to get the ball forward in the last quarter.

“ey kicked ve goals to one in the nal quarter,” Horwood said.

“ey had 17 inside-50s and we had just four – that’s not going to win you football.

“We got beaten in the mideld. ey took away our space. ey also kicked better at goal.”

Horwood said several players had performed well but the spread across the board wasn’t there and that had cost them dearly.

“Jesse and Ben McInneny were both good in their rst games,” he said.

“Nathan Wood and Jesse Flannery did good shut-down jobs, while Alik Magin is all class.”

Jesse McInneny kicked three goals for the Lions, with Magin chipping in with two.

e Lions’ A-grade netballers started their season with a good win against the Cobras.

e Lions won 46-42, with Rachael Dovaston best on court.

Beck Anstey, in the unusual position for her of goal shooter, hit 29 goals for the Lions.

is week, the Lions face Melton at home under lights with the Bloods coming o wins in both the netball and football.

Last quarter fadeout costs Lions a win

A women’s football match between Sunbury Lions and South Morang was abandoned on Sunday aer ghts broke out across the ground.

As umpires struggled to keep control and tempers reached breaking point, South Morang coach Maurice Baldasso made the decision to end the division 2 Victorian Women’s Football League match at Lakes Reserve in the third quarter. Sunbury was leading South Morang, also nicknamed the Lions, 5.4 (34)-0.1 (1) at the time and the result is likely to stand.

South Morang president and women’s assistant coach Jim Chetcuti said he would speak to league ocials this week about the umpiring and about the way Sunbury played.

“Our coach called it o because of the loss of control by the umpires and the physicality and the unfair way [Sunbury] played,” he said. “We’ve got nine girls with serious injuries

. . . concussions, broken collar bones and a potential back fracture, all from rough play.

“At the end of the day we did our best and tried to play football but it got out of control and our coach said enough was enough.

“We’re not in it for the ghts and the rough stu and we’ll certainly let [the league] know what took place.”

e two Lions sides were playing each other for the rst time aer promotion from their respective divisions last year.

Sunbury controlled the game from the start but scored only one goal in the rst quarter.

Play was halted in the second quarter aer an ambulance was called to treat South Morang’s Jacinta Campbell for severe concussion caused by a tackle.

Sunbury Lions came out the better aer the break and started to hit the scoreboard before the match was abandoned.

Sunbury coach Kerry Saunders said she would not have called the match o.

“We played in a lower grade than [South Morang] last year, so I thought they’d understand what was coming,” she said.

“We promote, fair, hard, fast football and if my girls did something wrong I’d be the rst to drag them o. I thought all our tackles were clean and good and so did the umpires.

“I suggested to the umpire to send one o, I didn’t care who it was or from which side.

“All you have to do is send one o for swearing or a bad tackle or punch on and it’s the best way to cut it out.”

Saunders said she was happy with how the new girls had settled into the side.

“I said it would be horrible in the rst 10 minutes and by quarter-time, I said ‘see it was horrible’,” she said.

“To have them in our team and carry them for the rst 10 minutes and to be still in front was good. By the last 20 minutes we were starting to run and have space and it didn’t matter if it was a new girl or not.”
