Should a compulsory vote be held? Is there support for an independent Sunbury even if annual rates were to increase signi�cantly? �ese were among questions posed by auditors investigating Sunbury’s planned separation from Hume during a largely polite public meeting last Friday.

�ere were none of the �reworks feared in some quarters.

Friday’s meeting in the Sunbury Memorial Hall was the �rst since a heated gathering at Broadmeadows last September, a�er which a probe was launched into the alleged behaviour of two councillors.

�e general mood on Friday indicated support for a �nal, compulsory vote on Sunbury’s separation, which is among the options available to auditors Frank Vincent and John Watson, who will make recommendations to state Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins by August 31.

About 250 people – including representatives of Sunbury Residents Association (SRA), Sunbury Community Progress Association, Broadmeadows Progress Association, council sta� and the Australian Services Union – were there to hear the two auditors share their thoughts on the information they had gathered.

A critically endangered wallaby species could still be reintroduced to the Macedon Ranges despite a proposal for an enclosure at Black Hill Reserve failing to win support of the council.

A report recommended that councillors provide in-principle support to Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre’s plan to build a 1.8-metre fence to protect a population of brush-tailed rock wallabies due to be released at the reserve.

But at their meeting last week, councillors Roger Jukes, John Letchford and John Connor warned of catastrophic scenes when, not if,

another blaze tore through the �re-prone reserve and engulfed the small wallabies trapped behind its proposed fence.

Councillors instead accepted Cr Jukes’ amended motion to note the report and, should the community indicate support, encourage Mount Rothwell to investigate other areas.

‘‘We lost four black wallabies just due to farm fencing,’’ Cr Jukes said of a bush�re at the reserve earlier this year. ‘‘When we have another �re … the entire population inside that fence would be lost.’’

Council joins home hunt for rare wallabies

Tradies who have had items pinched recently from building sites in Melbourne’s north and north-west are being urged to contact Sunbury police.

�e call comes a�er a Sunbury man, 22, was charged with several counts of burglary and the�, following the seizure of allegedly stolen building materials valued at almost $200,000.

Detectives from Broadmeadows criminal investigation unit raided a Sunbury house on July 19, �nding dozens of items, including ladders, bathtubs, doors, door handles, wheelbarrows and power tools.

Detective Senior Constable Lee Barton said police believed the items had been taken from building sites at Greenvale, Keilor and Sunbury. He said it took police all of last Monday morning to transport the items to Sunbury police station.

‘‘It’s going to take us a lot longer to log it all,’’ Detective Senior Constable Barton said.

�e raid follows an ongoing investigation, advanced with information from the public.

‘‘We would encourage builders and residents in new estates to take note and, if they see something suspicious, contact police.’’

Detective Senior Constable Barton also called on tradies to ensure they marked valuable items.

‘‘Engrave them with a licence number so they can be returned. It also makes them harder to resell.’’

�e man will face Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on September 30. Builders who have had items stolen should phone 9744 8111.

VicRoads is reviewing the Calder Freeway speed limit between Keilor and Taylors Lakes, with a �nal decision expected within weeks.

�e review could return the limit to 100km/h on the outbound section of the freeway, which is currently zoned at 80km/h.

�e section of road under review stretches from Melton Highway to “about 430 metres south-east of Calder Park Drive”, Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said.

�e review is expected to be �nished by the end of the month.

Calder Action Group president Ian Sutherland said an increase in the speed limit was great news, but more needed to be done.

“If we are going up to 100km/h over most of the current 80km/h section, it should be a great boon to all those who have protested about the current speed limit and, in some cases, been a�ected by the road-rage attitude developed in some hoon drivers as a consequence,” he said.

“For many others, we have long looked forward to this day. �e people behind several petitions on the subject are to be commended, and no doubt the Calder Highway improvement committee has helped.”

Mr Sutherland said the group’s long-term goal was to see an overpass built at the Calder Park Drive interchange.

“We have, as recently as today, received an assurance from the state government Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan that his government will consider funding, in a future program, a proposal being developed now by VicRoads for this overpass,” he said.

“We are delighted, though, to have this �rst step now in place.”

Ms Hutchins said she looked forward to a positive and safe outcome, especially for residents who use the road every day.

A local mum with an interest in sustainable living will share the science behind good and bad bacteria in your gut during a free workshop at Sunbury library. Amanda Woods, a former scientist and information technology consultant, will give a pickles, preserves and probiotics talk from 6pm on August 12. Most ratepayers in the Macedon Ranges are paying their rates in full and on time, with council data showing the number of ratepayers sent �nal notices has decreased in recent years.

�is is despite the number of rateable properties steadily increasing each year.

A total of 1463 people had been sent a �nal notice for unpaid rates as of July, down from 1530 at the same time last year.

�e number of ratepayers increased

unpaid a�er both a courtesy letter and �nal notice have been sent.’’

He said that by this stage most cases of overdue rates will have been paid.

Mr Owen urged anyone having trouble paying their rates to talk to the council about hardship provisions.

A spokesman for community health service provider cohealth, which runs the program with Sunbury Community Health and Djerriwarrh Education Services, says it developed a�er requests from men wanting to get together and learn more about how to cook.

Most towns in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges can be considered advantaged communities, according to a major national study.

But the Dropping O� the Edge report, which looks at indicators including income, housing stress, education, unemployment, domestic violence and criminal convictions, reveals that Lance�eld and Kyneton are somewhat disadvantaged.

�e report shows school readiness in Lance�eld and Romsey was towards the poorer end of the 667 Victorian localities reviewed.

Produced by Jesuit Social Services and Catholic Social Services Australia, the report uses data collected from a range of government agencies.

Postcodes were ranked on each indicator, with high rankings indicating an area was signi�cantly disadvantaged in the stated categories.

�ese rankings were then used to construct a more comprehensive analysis including all indicators to produce an overall ranking of disadvantage.

New Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Macedon were listed among the state’s “most advantaged” areas.

Sunbury, Gisborne, Woodend and Romsey were, overall, considered “advantaged”.

Lance�eld and Kyneton were found to be “disadvantaged”.

Only Malmsbury was listed among the “most disadvantaged”, being the home of a

youth justice centre recording high rankings for criminal convictions, prison admissions, unemployment and disengaged young people.

Romsey and Lance�eld fared poorly in school readiness (61st and 38th respectively), year 3 numeracy (152nd and 135th) and criminal convictions (183rd and 137th).

Kyneton was at the higher end of the scale for disengaged young people (160th), long-term unemployment (159th), year 9 reading (156th), child maltreatment (138th) and psychiatric admissions (119th).

Critics said �gures used in the report, which follows similar studies released in 2007, 2004 and 1999, could be dated and skewed, with smaller sample sizes used in less populated towns.

Macedon Ranges council community wellbeing director Karen Stevens said the school readiness score was based on a three-year-old study involving 81 children in Romsey and 29 in Lance�eld.

‘We don’t know anything about the tested children’s individual situations and whether they attended kindergarten in the year prior to school,’’ Ms Stevens said. ‘‘However, council will certainly consider this report, along with other sources, in the development of an early- years plan over the next 12 months.”

Attempted abductionPolice are investigating the attempted abduction of a teenage girl in Riddells Creek. The schoolgirl was walking along Amess Road about 4.30pm on July 20 when a man in a black car approached her. The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, allegedly offered the girl a ride home before opening the car door and trying to grab her arm. Details online.

Peeping Tom mysteryPolice have been unable to substantiate reports of a man peering through a bathroom window in Woodend. A resident told police she saw a man, possibly aged in his 20s, looking through the window as she showered about 7.30am last Wednesday.

Fatality witness soughtA woman, believed to be in her early 40s, died after a single-vehicle crash near Gisborne on July 20. Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash on Gisborne-Bacchus Marsh Road. The drive was the only occupant.

Dog owner �nedA dog owner has been �ned $1000 and ordered to pay Macedon Ranges council’s court and impoundment costs after a dangerous dog was found wandering at Romsey. On June 29, Kyneton Magistrates Court heard that the dog had been declared dangerous due to previous attacks on other animals.

A $2.3 million project to improve safety on one of Sunbury’s busiest arterial roads should be completed by the end of the year.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull last week inspected Riddell Road, where 17 serious crashes, including one fatality, were recorded in the �ve years to December last year.

Upgrades to prevent run-o�-road crashes will include installation of 3.8 kilometres of guard rails and 1.1 kilometres of wire rope safety barriers. Line marking and drainage will also be improved.

Crews will seal about 600 metres of road shoulder between the intersection of Phillip Drive and Canterbury Avenue in Sunbury and

the Jacksons Creek bridge in Riddells Creek. Mr Bull said the state government was delivering safety upgrades where they were most needed.

‘‘�ese improvements will make Riddell Road safer for all motorists and reduce the risk and severity of run-o� crashes,’’ he said.

Sunbury motorist Adele Wood, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, said drivers would welcome the changes.

‘‘It’s long overdue. At the moment, it’s quite di�cult,” Ms Wood said.

“You o�en have to put two tyres onto dirt because of oncoming tra�c.’’

Businesses have been quick to support a black-tie ball to help Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie recover from a severe stroke.

More than $11,000 in goods and services have been donated since a committee began planning the event, hoping to raise $100,000 for home modi�cations and equipment, including a motorised wheelchair.

Cr Ogilvie, 68, was paralysed on one side a�er su�ering a stroke on July 6. �e long-time councillor was organising a community event when the stroke happened. Doctors are said to be amazed by the initial recovery of Cr Ogilvie, who many years ago beat a cancer that was considered terminal.

Cr Ogilvie remains in hospital and faces months of extensive rehabilitation.

Committee spokesman Adam Mizzi said o�ers had �ooded in.

Major corporates, including Swisse Vitamins, which has o�ered a week-long stay valued at $5000 at a holiday house, have jumped on board. Eales Racing has donated two VIP passes to the spring carnival and will bring the Melbourne Cup to the ball, which will include a three-course meal and auction.

A Macedon Ranges community health service has called on federal MPs to legalise same-sex marriage, saying the move would greatly improve the health of many of its clients.

About 60 workers from Cobaw Community Health and Macedon Ranges council rallied outside Kyneton town hall last Wednesday.

A bill on the subject is expected to be introduced to Parliament when sitting resumes next month.

Cobaw chief executive Margaret McDonald said marriage equality would lead to substantial bene�ts for same-sex attracted people.

Data released by lobby group Marriage Equality Australia reveals the mental health of same-sex-attracted people is among the worst in the nation, with more than 24 per cent of people surveyed experiencing a major depressive episode in 2005.

�is was compared to 6.8 per cent of the broader population.

Instances of depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm amongst same-sex attracted people are between 3.5 and 14 times higher.

‘‘�e current laws in Australia that deny same-sex-attracted people the right to marry their partner continue to a�ect the wellbeing of many members of our community,’’ Ms McDonald said.

‘‘Social exclusion is one of the most signi�cant determinants of health outcomes.

‘‘Due to ongoing prejudice and discrimination, same-sex-attracted and gender-diverse people have signi�cantly poorer health outcomes than the broader population.’’

Federal Labor MP Lisa Chesters described same-sex marriage as a matter of social justice.

‘‘I supported marriage equality before I was elected to Parliament,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s an

Planning amendments covering Woodend, Kyneton and Riddells Creek will be sent to the planning minister for authorisation a�er being ticked o� by Macedon Ranges council last Wednesday.

�e three plans, adopted by the council in 2013 and 2014, include improved design requirements to protect neighbourhood character and overlays for the commercial and retail sectors of Riddells Creek and Woodend.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said that while she didn’t agree with everything in the documents, it was important for them to be put out to the public.

�e amendments will be exhibited once authorisation is received, while unresolved submissions will be referred to an independent panel before a �nal decision is made.

Cr John Letchford said the plans were the result of extensive consultation, which was especially vigorous in Woodend.

‘‘�is is only now the start of the process,’’ Cr Letchford said, adding that people could go to the panel with any concerns.

�e council also adopted a combined planning amendment and permit to pave the way for the sale of land in Bowkett Close, Romsey, with money to be directed to creating an all-abilities park at a former school site.

Part of the school site, in Main Street, will be leased to Cobaw Community Health under a separate agreement.

Diggers Rest hit its target of starting well against Sunbury Kangaroos in its Riddell District Football League clash.

�e Burras dominated play early at Bloomdale Oval and were up 32 points by quarter-time.

�e Kangaroos pegged back the Burras’ scoring but couldn’t peg back the lead with the Burras winning 13.13 (91) - 7.6 (48).

For the Burras it was a massive win as they fell short against an injury riddled Kangaroo side earlier in the season.

�e Kangaroos struggled to �nd goal kicking avenues on Saturday as marks in the forward 50 were a rarity.

Burras coach Shaun Sims said it was good to get a win against one of the top sides.

“With all due respect to the bottom sides, we are expected to win against them,” he said.

“�ese games with the top six or seven … toss of the coin sort of stu�.

“I thought we played really well against Riddell a couple of weeks ago but didn’t get the points. We capitalised early today.”

Sims said his side should have gone further in front in the �rst half.

“We started the game really well and I thought we could have been up further in the �rst half but the conditions were tricky.

“I’m pleased to win. We wanted to play well … we did for the most part of it.

“We need to build towards �nals. �e forward line is starting to work much better.”

He said there was still plenty of potential to be tapped in the lead-up to �nals.

“Our ball movement is getting much better,” Sims said. “Especially in our �rst half, I thought a couple of passages were fantastic. [We] had about 15 handball receives from the back pocket to the forward pocket.

“We gave up a couple of undisciplined things in the last quarter … that is something we have to get out of our game. It doesn’t matter if it is a little ticky touch wood things – we need to get them out of our game.”

Sims said there were players to come back into the side.

“BJ Kilty played twos, Brett Caton played twos, as did Mick Kilty,” he said.

“Jamma [Jamerson Campbell] didn’t play. �ey have to prove themselves in the twos to get back into the team.”

In other results, Romsey beat Macedon, Rupertswood smashed Lance�eld, Riddell was too good for Melton Centrals, Woodend-Hesket got over Rockbank and Broadford defeated Wallan.

Plenty to like about up-and-coming JetsSunbury Jets is heading in the right direction, despite not making the Big V men’s division 1 �nals.

�e Jets have been inconsistent all year, and dropping a number of close games cost them any chance of making �nals.

On Saturday night, the Jets �nished the season with a 20-point loss, 83-63, to �nals-bound Melton.

Speaking before the match, coach Grant Spencer said, despite not reaching �nals, there was a lot to like about the club going forward.

“I had some high expectations. �ere was always going to be inconsistency, due to the number of players we changed from the season before.

“We’ve had seven to eight youth league boys play in the team and many of them will be in the senior team full-time next year.

“We had seven to eight games with single digit margins, so we are thereabouts. We have improved and won more matches than last year. We know we’re not that far away from being a serious contender.”

Spencer said he was impressed how players had responded a�er the club parted ways with import Javari Williams.

“We took the top team single digits, and had double overtime against Shepparton,” he said. “We are heading in the right direction.”

One player who has really stepped up in the last part of the season is Harrison Salm.

“If I’m coaching again next season, he is my number one priority to keep at the club.

“With Ben Jones overseas and the youth boys going back to playing just youth men, Harrison has got more court time,” Spencer said.

“I’ve been playing four guards as well. He’s been taking it by the scru� of the neck and playing the level he can.”

Spencer, who is out of contract, wants to stay on at the club.

“I want a side which is majority Sunbury guys, and an import to �ll the gap. We’ve got talented players, like Jeremy Wragg, Nathan Baker and Billy Feben … if we want to move forward, we need a talented core, which I believe is there.”

�e Jets women’s side �nished its season with a win against Hawthorn and a loss against Camberwell.

It was a disappointing weekend for the youth men’s side, which bowed out of the �nals in the �rst week. It lost to Camberwell 90-66.

Not only did Riddell return to the winners’ list, but star defender Lauren Close made her comeback in the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday.

Close, who played a couple of quarters earlier in the season, was given the all-clear to make a full comeback a�er a knee reconstruction last year.

Speaking before the game, last year’s Ryan medalist said she was excited to get back onto the court.

“�e girls kept joking that I’d come back through C-grade” she said. “I’ll play where and when the team needs me.”

Close helped the Bombers to a 45-22 win over Melton Centrals on Saturday, despite having goal shooter Mikaela Vaughan on Australian Netball League duty.

But while Close has returned to the court, Riddell has lost Bridget Aughton for the rest of the year.

“She’s travelling overseas and has gone inde�nitely but we’ll always welcome her back,” Close said.

“We have lost a bit movement through the midcourt with her missing.”

Close said last week’s draw against Romsey had been a bit of a wake-up call.

“We didn’t turn and, credit to Romsey, they were a lot quicker and cleaner with the ball,” she said.

“We had a poor warm-up and it showed in the �rst quarter. It de�nitely shocked a lot of the girls.”

To make sure it doesn’t happen again, the girls are stepping up training in the lead-up to �nals.

“We normally train once a fortnight but it’s back to once a week to work on team structure,” Close said.

�e Bombers’ goal is to go one step further than last season, when they were beaten in the grand �nal a�er losing only one match in the regular season.

“We want to �nish strong,” Close said. “We need to li� on the run home.”

In a round which saw the top six teams all play each other it was Rupertswood and Romsey who got the big wins.

�e Sharks beat Lance�eld 51-34, while the Redbacks hot form continued with a 52-32 defeat of Macedon.

In other results, Diggers Rest beat Sunbury Kangaroos and Rockbank was too good for Woodend-Hesket.

Premiership heroes from generations past will gather at Clarke Oval on Saturday to remember their glory days.

Sunbury Lions will hold a reunion for the premiership teams of 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995. �e nine winning teams include under-17s, under-18s, reserves, seniors and A-grade netballers.

Event organiser Doug Steel says he has sent out 200 invitations to past players and o�cials.

�e reunion will happen at the Lions’ home game against North Ballarat City from 1pm this Saturday.

Steel, a Lions life member, played in several premierships, including 1980’s. He said that was the year that stood out.

“�e fact we won all three footy premierships in 1980 is a big thing. It’s pretty unprecedented for that to happen.”

Steel said while the Lions had had several players join AFL clubs, none of them had been involved in the 1980 �ags.

He said the reunion was not limited to premiership players.

“We’ll welcome supporters, o�cials and other former players who want to come along. It’s a good chance for people to catch up and remember the good times.”

Last Saturday, the Lions lost to Bacchus Marsh, 13.13 (91) - 11.10 (76). Trent Stead, Matthew Medcra� and Jack Landt each kicked two for the Lions, while defender Adam Short was named best on�eld. �e loss puts the Lions outside the top six.

In A-grade netball, Chloe Curran put up 99 shots, making 71 of them, in the 101-19 win.

Bendigo Football LeagueGisborne kept its slight �nals hopes alive with a 43-point win over South Bendigo. The Bulldogs didn’t have it all their own way as they were held goal-less in the second quarter. Tom May was best on ground. The Bulldogs are a game behind �fth-placed Kyneton.

TAC CupThe Calder Cannons gained some revenge over the Oakleigh Chargers taking the points in the rematch of last year’s grand �nal. The Cannons kicked �ve goals to two in the second half to secure the 20-point win. Lachlan Bramble was best on ground.

�e Toyota Hilux DC SR5 is more truck than car. It’s big, has a grungy diesel sound, bounces around when empty and turns like the Spirit of Tasmania.

It doesn’t have all the creature comforts of, say, the Kluger or Prado, or even some of its four-wheel-drive ute competitors, but the commanding height and spacious cabin make it feel as strong as it is practical.

It’s this practicality that makes the vehicle desirable, though it probably needs a few more bells and whistles to be a true family ride.

�e double cabin is base-model plain with few storage options other than the deep locker and a cup holder on the console – passengers get a door pocket with a cup holder.

�e seats are comfortable, but the driver’s could do with lumbar adjustment for long journeys.

But, as with camping, you don’t need luxury to enjoy yourself. �is is the motoring equivalent of a man’s shed. I enjoyed a great weekend o�-roading near Blackwood before a long-overdue tip run and then up to Darley to buy a quarter- ton of �rewood.

Back inside, the workmanlike dashboard is centred around a 6.1-inch touchscreen, which has a more instinctive interface than the one found in other Toyotas, such as the 86 and FJ Cruiser.

Syncing to Bluetooth is quick and simple and on subsequent drives it connects to your phone almost instantly. It’s easy enough to operate while driving, but there are steering

wheel buttons for audio and phone, which makes things safer.

�e air-conditioning features climate control operated via a simple control panel.

Vision is great, as you’d expect from a high vehicle, and I do like looking forward over the

air intake on the bonnet. �e 3.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel isn’t

the most powerful in its class, but it does the job well.

Naturally, it’s built with torque in mind, so it won’t leap from the tra�c lights but travels

nicely once you get going. It has plenty of grunt in reserve for overtaking at upper speed limits.

�e �ve-speed automatic transmission introduced to this model is seamless and works well down the low ranges. It helps the engine run at a respectable 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

�e four-wheel-drive transfer case is still an old-school shi� lever. �ere’s ample clearance height and you don’t need me to tell you that it operates well in the dirt.

On the road, it feels better with a load in the back. �e 250 kilograms of �rewood I had in the tray seemed just about right, but it can take more than 800kgs.

�e tray measures 1.52 metres long and 1.515 metres wide to �t a standard pallet.

�e big chrome roll-bar provided something to tie a rope around, but it would be good if there were tie-down hooks along the side.

�is model was a big improvement from its predecessors but, while it’s still the biggest-selling four-wheel drive ute based on a well-earned reputation for reliability, it is outclassed for power, size and re�nement by competitors, such as the VW Amarok, Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara.

Toyota is set to catch up with the recently unveiled 2016 Hilux, which will hopefully mean some decent run-out deals of this model, which retails for $54,990.

Some Toyota dealers have specials for under $50,000 and it won’t be long before there’s more examples on the used car market.
