Enough talking its time for action. That was the view of many who attended a state election education forum in Kyneton last week.

Lisa Ohlmus, spokeswoman for the Friends of Kyneton Education group, said organisers were pleased that Labor had promised to fund a new Kyneton primary school for 350 pupils, and she looked forward to the Liberal Party matching the commitment.

Macedon Labor candidate Mary-Anne Thomas told the forum education was shaping as a significant divide between the two major parties.

The more Ive learnt, the more passionate Ive become about the need to invest in public education, she said.

It is the most effective tool we have to tackle inequality.

Ms Thomas said Labor wanted Kyneton to be a destination for education, with a new primary school campus, improvements to Kyneton Secondary College and a trades training centre.

She said the party would respect the communitys wishes about an ongoing separation between the primary and secondary schools.

Greens candidate Neil Barker said the Kyneton community deserved schools with the facilities needed to adequately teach students over the next few decades, not 10 years.

Liberal candidate Donna Petrovich said the present government supported a new primary school as part of the seven-year-old Kyneton

education plan, but said one size doesnt fit all.My vision for this place is to actually get on

with it and do the job, Ms Petrovich said. When pressed by residents about the Liberal

Partys commitment to the education plan and Kyneton Primary Schools need for a 350-pupil capacity, Ms Petrovich said she would only make promises she could guarantee.

We want to empower the school and school leadership, she said. These details will be worked out as we go along.

Ms Petrovich warned that the election of a Labor government could lead to the conversation about Kyneton schools starting again.

Ms Thomas said there is a lot riding on the outcome of next months election, and she vowed Labor would deliver a new primary school, significant upgrades to the ageing secondary school and a trades training hub.

Ms Petrovich said Liberal commitments for a new primary school and secondary school works were actual budget line items.

The Friends groups Ms Ohlmus encouraged Macedon voters to make an informed decision.

Given this [education plan] has been dragged out over successive governments and over many years, were keen to see these promises actually materialise, she said.

    Poll brings out education vows

It is the most effective tool we have to tackle inequality - Mary-Anne Thomas

Horsepower, fine fashion, live music, loads of fun and some serious betting will be hallmarks of Wednesdays Kyneton Cup.

A crowd of about 5000 is expected at Kyneton racecourse for the towns biggest race day.

Kyneton Racing Club general manager Jon Dight says there will be plenty to keep racegoers entertained, with a nine-race program on an improved track likely to produce quality action.

The club recently undertook a complete overhaul of drainage and irrigation systems,

Off-track, weve got fashions on the field,

a $20 punters club, and weve added a lot of live music as well, Dight said.

This years fashions on the field contest offers $4000 in prizes.

There will be a jumping castle and playground for children. Courtesy buses will run to and from Kyneton railway station.

Dight says the race meeting is part of Victorias Spring Racing Carnival and is always held on the day after the Melbourne Cup. Its the towns own event theres a really good community vibe.

A jewel in Kynetons foodie crown is open for business.

About 100 people attended the unveiling of a $500,000 expansion of Piper Street Food Company last Wednesday.

The stores recently completed development tripled the floor space and now includes a kitchen, cafe, cooking school and bakery.

Owner and chef Damian Sandercock said the expanded store was an asset to Kyneton and would bolster the towns reputation as a tourist destination.

For us, the hard work starts now. The space has a huge amount of potential and Im really excited about watching the business grow, he said.

Cooking school co-ordinator Simone Gordon said the businesss various offerings would provide an economic boost for the town, with parts of the store open seven days a week.

The cooking school offers midweek classes for simpler dishes, while more difficult fare is taught on Saturdays.

Weve had a broad range of people show interest; theres been a big take-up, Ms Gordon said.

A lot of people want to learn so they can become more confident in their cooking.

Police are appealing for public help following the discovery of a body in a burnt out car at Diggers Rest last Friday.

Police and the Country Fire Authority were called to Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, Diggers Rest, about 12.30am following reports a car was on fire.

After firefighters extinguished the flames they found a body in the boot of the car, which they believe is a Peugeot wagon, 2006 model, possibly grey.

There were no registration plates on the vehicle. On Monday morning police identified the badly burnt body but witheld any details until family were notified.

It is believed the car was travelling in an easterly direction along Bulla-Diggers Rest Road before it came to a stop at Holden Bridge.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey, of the homicide squad, said an arson chemist was assessing whether an accelerant was used on the vehicle.

I cant rule out whether an accident was the cause of the fire, or whether the vehicle was deliberately set on fire, post the accident, he said.

Police believe the person in the boot was already dead before the car was set alight. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.

Rolling Stones Concert at Hanging Rock

    By Matt Crossman

Life at sea in the navy sure isnt for everyone. But for Sunburys Darby Munro, the decision to serve his country aboard HMAS Shropshire was the beginning of a brilliant new chapter of his life.

Mr Munro, who turns 91 this month, says joining the navy after being raised in an orphanage was beautiful.

I was sent out to work on a farm when I was about 10, he said.

[When I reached working age] some people said they were my parents, so I came to Melbourne.

I found out later they werent who they said they were, so I went and joined the navy.

Mr Munro served in the Pacific in World War II. He was on board when the ship came under waves of attack by Japanese pilots for five days.

While reluctant to speak about the harsher aspects of war, he said navy life had opened up the world to him.

I only went to school one day a week growing up and couldnt read or write, he said. But as soon as I got on the ship, the boys taught me and I picked it up as I went along.

Things only got better for Mr Munro after the war.

He walked off the ship, took part in a march in the city and walked into a job as a stacker at a flour mill. He remained in the industry for almost 40 years.

In 1948 he married his sweetheart, Yvonne, after having served with her brother on the Shropshire.

They went on to have four sons and four daughters, 15 grandchildren and four great-

grandchildren. They lived in Ascot Vale for many years. Mr Munro moved to Sunbury about 15 years ago, after losing his wife to emphysema about five years earlier.

Mr Munro said that for all his achievements, nothing surpassed family. To think I came from nothing, to have such a loving family its just beautiful, he said.

Mr Munro remains active in community life. In addition to selling poppies in the lead- up to every Remembrance Day, he spends each Monday night in a community kitchen.

I just make the sweets, bread and butter pudding and that sort of stuff, he said.

Its good to keep helping others.

Help for sick kids families A Gisborne mother whose childs life was saved by staff at the Royal Childrens Hospital is urging people to help her to support others needing the hospitals services. Emma Dwyers daughter, Hannah, now 4, has made a spectacular recovery after her latest round of heart surgery on August 25. Hannah was born with half a heart and underwent the first of three major surgeries almost immediately after birth. After so much trauma, Ms Dwyer said it was tremendous to see her little girl doing so well. She has organised a fundraiser at New Gisbornes train park, in Webb Crescent, this Sunday. The family fun day will include stalls, rides, show bags, jumping castles, music and farm animals. Ms Dwyer hopes to raise enough money to donate 3000 bags packed with basic items, such as toothpaste, a hairbrush and shampoo, for families having to rush to the hospital at short notice. Revegetation supportedEfforts to create a native flora and fauna corridor at Lancefield Primary School have received a state government grant of $46,000. Upgrades to a walking track at Lancefields recreation reserve will also receive $35,000 after Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith visited the town last Wednesday. A total of $207,078 was announced for environmental projects in the Macedon electorate, including $14,000 for improvements at Trenthams Stoney Creek Reserve and $10,000 for bush landscaping at Newham Primary School. Woodend Landcare will receive $28,400

for efforts to remove weeds along Five Mile Creek.

Track upgrades at The RockHorse and jockey safety will be improved at Hanging Rock racecourse when 1600 metres of plastic running rail is installed around the famous track. Northern Victoria MP Amanda Millar announced $32,000 for the project last Wednesday. Racing Victoria and the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club will fund the balance of the $64,000 project. Club general manager Jon Dight said the upgrades would be welcomed by jockeys and trainers, and would help secure the long-term future of racing at the Hanging Rock track, which has hosted official races since 1886.

Mural celebrates showA colourful 12-metre-long mural celebrating 154 years of the Kyneton Agricultural Show has been unveiled at the Mollison Street showgrounds. The mural, on a previously blank section of corrugated iron, has transformed the frontage of the showgrounds known as Watts Pavilion. This years show is on November 14 and 15. For more details, visit www.kynetonshow.org.au.

Sunbury aid groups fundedNot-for-profit groups in Hume have received cash in a new round of grants from the councils charitable fund. The groups include Sunbury-based welfare support and emergency relief agency CareWorks SunRanges. The Riding for the Disabled branch at Oaklands and Goonawarra Bilbys Playgroup Association were also among this years recipients.

Kynetons place as one of the spiritual homes of the Australian Light Horse has been immortalised with a new monument.

The statue of a charging soldier, bayonet in hand, was unveiled in front of about 400 people at the Mechanics Institute last Friday.

The event marked the culmination of a long-running community campaign to honour the towns connection to the famous mounted rifle corps, which dates to 1859.

Kyneton was one of the earliest homes of a volunteer troop.

The Australian Light Horse of mounted troops served in the Second Boer War as well as WWI. The 4th Light Horse Regiment served on three fronts in the Great War at Gallipoli, on the Western Front and in Palestine.

Kyneton Light Horse monument group secretary Larina Strauch said the group had worked with Heritage Victoria, Kyneton RSL and Macedon Ranges council to bring the project to fruition.

She said the statue had already increased awareness of Kynetons place in Australian war history.

Ive had many people come up to me and say they didnt realise the great connection Kyneton has with the Light Horse, Ms Strauch said.

Its not a glorification of conflict but an acknowledgment that Kyneton holds the key to that rich history.

A property of about 13 hectares of fertile soil, Erinvale would make a fine hobby farm or provide a family with a rural lifestyle in a region noted for its food, wines and scenic vistas.

The house, built circa late-1800s, has a rich local history and has retained all period features. A subsequent extension and more recent updates have been sympathetically executed, maintaining a country farmhouse soul with the added spice of bygone glamour.

At the end of a long, ornamental pear-lined driveway, the house precinct is an oasis of beauty amid paddocks and extensive shedding, some of which also mark an older time. Theres a whimsical

mix of an old dairy shed, a great chicken coop, stockyards, a hothouse, a large dog yard, a big pig pen with shelter, storage sheds, workshop, a massive hay/machinery shed, a three-door Colorbond shed, fenced paddocks, a vegie garden, mini orchard, cubby house and playground, a reliable bore, numerous water tanks and the embodiment of farm life, a windmill.

Now to the house. Beyond a verandah that wraps around all sides, the classic central entry hall has the best of its era: wide-format Baltic floorboards, ceiling rosettes, very deep skirts, 3.6-metre ceilings, painted stepped cornices and an arch with wonderfully ornate corbels. Four bedrooms flank the hallway, one of which

is set up as a study (with closet). The main bedroom has a beautiful leadlight bay window and, as do two others, an original mantelpiece; in this case, it has 2pac wardrobes built in on each side.

At halls end, a stained-glass door marks the newer section and where Tasmanian oak floorboards begin, although in the sitting room here the Baltic floorboards remain. This living area has painted ceiling boards, a glazed door to a side verandah, and a wood heater set in a slate surround.

The kitchen next door, accessed from the side verandah via a mudroom/airlock, has loads of Tassie oak cupboards, a dual-level breakfast bench, a corner pantry, underbench oven, electric cooktop and a

dual-drawer dishwasher; a leadlight feature window references the original period. Right at the back, theres a dining/sun room with sash windows and deep skirts (evidence of attention to period detail); a bathroom with a spa, timber vanity unit and enclosed toilet; and a laundry with a second enclosed toilet.

Gardens are marked by extensive recent tree planting, destined to put on a fabulous display, along with formal hedging, a stand of silver birches, roses in abundance and cottage-style garden beds.

Within a few minutes drive of the town centre, Erinvale is a slice of Kyneton magic.

GoughWhitlammade hugechanges to our lives and the extraordinary thing is, somany of those massive changes are still impacting onour lives today.

Ordinary working-class people on very minimalincomes could send their children to University!Ordinary working class people could go to thedoctor without fear of the cost. Womens rights wererecognized, suddenly even married women couldhave superannuation, and conscription stopped!

Until thechangesof to thecostofuniversity, low incomeearners (most of the population) has absolutely nohope of ever sending their children to University. Thecosts involved were simply too great. The advent ofMedicare changed the way we saw Health Care, andthis remains so today. Many woman will remembera time when men had superannuation woman, particularly married women, did not. Womans wageswere significantly lower, even when doing the samejob, than men. This changed and though there is stillroom for improvement at least a start was made. TheVietnam War saw the introduction of conscription forthe first time since World War 1. Young men whosenames were pulled out of a hat, no choice but tofight and die with no say. Conscription was ended! AGreat Man has passed from this world. Some willremember the good that he did. Some will rememberthe mistakes he was human after all but GoughWhitlam has left a legacy for us all and for our children.May he rest in peace
