On June 4, Ruth Jean Hawkins will celebrate her 95th birthday. Let’s shower her with cards and birthday wishes. Her address is 1825 Pelican Dr., Ft. Pierce, FL 34982.

WELCOME BACK! It’s been a time of fear and confusion over these last two months. As we finally offi-cially return to Mass (with some precautions) we hope and pray that the worst of this nightmare is behind us. Please use your own good sense as we slowly move ahead. We will simplify Mass today, as requested by the diocese (no Rite of Peace, no Communion from the Chalice, “social distancing”, allowing room in the Com-munion procession between you and the person ahead, etc.) I guess this seems sensible in light of the fact that that are many things many things we just do not know.

Please God, this will be over soon. It’s just good to be back together; at least some of us. Please remember all those people who remain in fear from all the hyste-ria...Our parish looks forward to Confirmation on June 11. I hope and pray that our young people are not only prepared in knowledge, but prepared for a much more active life as young Catholics. They receive the Holy Spirit so they can be active participants in God’s work here among us and beyond. It has been a great sorrow to see young Catholics see Confirmation as an end of their lives in our parish. As I mentioned last weekend, they should be moving from apprenticeship in Christian living to an active and personal witness to a better way of life. I hope we can count on them to be Lectors, Eu-charistic Ministers, Ushers, Greeters, etc… As we begin our regular schedule of meetings, please use caution for now... HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY

John Giel (May 29)

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Come upon Us

Lord of life, The world awaits your libera ng Spirit. Come, mighty wind, breathe new life into us.

Come, Spirit of Truth, reveal the evil that lingers in our midst. Come, Wisdom of God, teach us the way of righteousness. Come, Fire of Love, impassion us to act justly in all we do.

Come, Helper and Guide, draw us together in fellowship and peace. Come, O Sanc fier, and make us holy. Keep us forever united

with our loving and crea ng God, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today’s Apostles Today’s Readings: Acts 2:1–11; Psalm 104:1, 24, 29–30, 31, 34; 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7, 12–13; John 20:19–23. For the past seven weeks, we have heard what the Apostles did a er Jesus poured his Spirit out upon them. We have heard compelling speeches and listened to stories of healing and exorcism. We have witnessed the conversion of Jews, Sa-maritans, and Gen les. We have seen Paul, a fierce opponent of Jesus’ followers, become an eloquent and passionate preacher of the Gospel. We have also heard stories of ridicule, expulsion, imprisonment, and martyrdom, yet in those moments, the Apostles rejoiced that they could glorify God by dying and rising with Jesus.

As our Easter season comes to an end and we conclude our reading of the Acts of the Apostles, we might think such marvelous stories belong to the past. We might think we could never be such loving, courageous witnesses, we could never speak and act like those Apostles did. We would be wrong to think this. St. Paul tells us, “To each individual the manifesta on of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” Pentecost marked the beginning of the apostolic era, the era of the Church. We are s ll in that era. People s ll need to hear the story of salva on, s ll need healing, s ll need evil expelled from their midst. God pours his Spirit out upon us to transform and empower us, and then he sends us forth. We each have something to contribute to the story of salva-

on, for we are the apostles of this age.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, the languages of the whole world arise to God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the first session in 1962, Boston’s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn’t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had arrived at the Vatican via Boston! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THANK YOU to all the families who have been mailing in or dropping off your weekly financial commitment to the parish. Also thank you to the 2 families who donated part of their stimulus money to the church. Your generosity has been amazing!
