SRC Semester One

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing SRC members for Semester One. They worked extremely hard and were always at meetings, sharing their ideas to make our school an even

better place. Overall, they raised over $700 through school fundraising and the weekly selling of ice blocks. This money is going towards a new garden which the students have helped plan and design.

I look forward to working with our new SRC team to finish our garden and come up with new and exciting ideas for Lismore South Public School.

What has been happening in Preschool? Welcome back to Term 3: Our children confidently engaged in play as they followed their own interests. The Echidnas explored the garden collecting snails, investigated how trucks and hula hoops roll down a ramp and imagined there was hot lava in the playground. The Goanna group used their imagination to fly like birds through the playground, make their own stew using ingredients from nature, explore facial expressions and build cubby houses. Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.

Book Character Parade The annual Book Character Parade will be held on Thursday 8th August. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character for the parade, which will commence at 9.30am under the 3-6 COLA. Children from the Echidna group are welcome to participate in the parade, but must be accompanied by an adult and signed in to Preschool at 9.00am ready for the parade. The Echidnas can then be signed out afterwards. Opening Event Last week the students participated in their own class Opening Event for our new ProBL unit on The Living World. Each class had a full day of fun activities exploring plants and animals. We were very lucky to have Madi from Bunnings come and help plant gardens with the students and she gave them some tips on how to look after their gardens. Each class now has their own garden bed that they are responsible for looking after. Once our vegetables start to grow, we would love students to take any of the produce home in addition to using it to cook with at school.

Other ProBL Activities This Term As part of The Living World Unit, students will be learning about the environment around them, finding the best conditions to grow plants and researching a variety of animals. Students will also be studying sustainability and ways they can help the environment. They will be able to make terrariums and even design their own greenhouses. We will also be raising baby chicks and looking after fertilised eggs from the Henny Penny Hatching program later in the term. Students from K-6 can watch the chicks hatch from their eggs and follow their lifecycle from the inside. By the end of the Living World unit, we are hoping to have set up a functioning greenhouse, compost bins and have a beautiful garden full of delicious vegetables and herbs that all children can access. It is going to be a very engaging and interactive unit and we cannot wait to share it with you! Emma Smith - Teacher
