Learnscape - Planet Ark National Tree Day – 26-7-2013

Students from Years 1-6 took part in National Tree Day 2013.

On Friday 26th July, all helpers assembled at the recycling centre situated next to our school for an annual clean-up of the area. The morning

progressed with the planting of a variety of shrubs and grasses. Students then moved back into the school grounds to plant trees and shrubs

along boundary fences. On completion of planting, staking and watering was carried out.

Our school has been working with the organisers of National Tree Day, Dubbo City Council for approximately 15 years. This day is made

possible by our local Council and for their contribution of plants and shrubs, we thank them very much.

SPORT

ORANA HEIGHTS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Date: Friday 9th August Time: 9am-2.45pm Venue: Barden Park (opposite Dubbo North Public School) Attending: All primary students and Year 2 students turning 8 this year.

Try outs have started for shot put, discus & long jump at school. The top six students in each age group will compete in the finals at the carnival. High jump will be run as a final at school. Junior boys were today and junior girls are tomorrow.

Try outs will continue on Friday 2nd August in Session 3.

A permission note for the carnival went home with the newsletter in Week 1 or you are able to print off the note that is on our website un-der Permission Notes. Spares are available at the front office. Please fill in the bottom section and return to class teachers. STATE BOYS TOUCH FOOTBALL Last week, Samuel Bass and Rhys French travelled to Coffs Harbour with the Western Touch Football team to take part in the State Touch Football Carnival. There were 13 teams competing in a full round robin competition over 3 days.

The team was made up of 14 boys from Dubbo, Wellington, Orange, Parkes, Mudgee, Rylestone, Blayney and Lithgow and they all had to attend training sessions in Mudgee with their coach Danielle Wakely prior to the carnival. Sam was picked to play on the wing while Rhys played in the middle of the field.

After a final training session in Coffs on Monday afternoon, the boys were ready to show everyone what Western were capable of as they were ranked last!

Their first game was against Hunter who were ranked 3rd and unfortunately we lost 7-2. It was a tough way to start but Hunter did go on to win the carnival undefeated. They were a very classy team. We suffered further losses to Polding, South Coast, North Coast, Sydney East, Sydney North and MacKillop but had good wins over North West, Sydney South West, Riverina, CIS and Sydney West. At the end of each day, the boys had a warm down session at the beach with team manager Ted Winsper, while Tuesday night saw the boys and their families get together for Ten Pin Bowling and dinner at the Sawtell RSL Club for team bonding.

Western ended up coming equal 8th on points but were officially placed 9th after for and against tallies. This is the best performance of a Western team at this carnival, so everyone was absolutely rapt. The coach credited the success with the commitment shown by every mem-ber to play as a team. Both Orana boys showed great sportsmanship and played absolutely great football. The whole 'Western Experience' was fantastic and something the boys will always remember. Jemma Hall
