are passionate about bonsai and want more out of our hobby. You are inspired and you want to real-ize the full potential of your bonsai experience and expect more from BSF to meet your expectations.
Based upon your desire, I know BSF will be here well into the future.
I assure you we are modernizing our organization and what has been put in place will improve our communication abilities for the next 30 years. We are already getting positive feedback about our convention website where we now have the ability to select the workshop trees you will work on in June.
I urge you to join us at our 2011 Tropical World of Bonsai Convention. Please look at our website for schedules, workshop tree pictures, and guest artists including internationally rec-ognized Ryan Neil. I fi nd the conventions are stimulating and
benefi ts of belonging and partici-pating in a bonsai organization.
I hear the concerns expressed by our members in 2011. Sometimes, the words are discouraging, but to me, the message is not. Your expec-tations that BSF provide better ser-vice sends me the message that you
This is not my message. Those words were written by the President of BSF, Chuck Eschenburg in 1981!

inspiring. The convention allows all of us to meet socially and to enjoy each others company as we exchange bonsai experience, stories and ideas. I look forward to meeting each of you personally to say thank you for your support and participation.
The entire Board of BSF works intensely and continuously on your behalf. We are not a professional
secret society, but are a Board comprised of you, the BSF members throughout the state willing to spend time and participate. The Board looks forward to your ideas and your participation in all BSF activities. When you come to the convention
in June, I hope to see you at the annual meeting so we can discuss the state of our affairs face to face.
And as Chuck said 30 years ago,“I hope every BSF member will reap the rewards of our shared pathway of enthusiastic endeavors.”
“The choice is yours.”
Chuck, wherever you are, I agree wholeheartedly.
“ espite our excellent and enlightening Convention, I am deeply worried over the future of the Bonsai Societies of Florida. I have noted decreasing attendance at our annual meetings. I sense increas- ing apathy in local clubs and our state society.
Our purpose is to learn bonsai and promote the art. Bonsai is a dynamic art which must grow. It is a dynamic art with dazzling possibilities for new ideas.
Which path will each of you take in your development of expertise? You may do it your own way, from your own mistakes and attempting to learn from books. Another path, with greater potential, is a wide path, shared with others. This path allows us to learn from each other. We learn from the experiments and experience of others. We share the inspiration of each other’s creations.
Sharing also means work; The necessary discouraging bits of club business. However, some of this can be fun, also. Getting together can produce a renewed spirit of inspiration. I hope your delegate will impart this to each Club member.
We really need a rejuvenation of spirit and an infusion of fresh ideas so that BSF may continue to grow, prosper and fulfi ll our obligation.
I hope every BSF member will reap the rewards of our shared pathways of enthusiastic endeavor. The choice is yours. Cheers, Chuck ”

irst issue of 2011 – what a great issue we have for you this Spring! It includes a beautiful travelogue of District One Trustee Rosemarie Voelker’s trip to China with the BCI group. I could have fi lled the entire issue with the spectacu-lar photographs that Rosemarie submitted to accompany her article. I’m envious that I wasn’t on that trip. Please see page 6.
Also in this issue is Louise Leister’s in-depth study on rec-reating nebari on a Ficus micro-carpa. I’ve watched Louise work on this tree over the years at our intensive study group with Boon Manakitivipart. I have to say that she is doing a great job of developing this tree. The photos accom-panying the article help illustrate the how-to approach of root grafting and branch develop-ment of this sturdy tropical speci-men. You’re doing an amazing job Louise, and thank you for sharing your tree with our readers. See page 16 for the story.
It is so important that we share our experiences with each other.
These articles show that there is always so much more to learn. No matter how much we think we know about the art of bonsai, each day brings the opportunity
to learn something new, whether it be through our travels to bonsai events or taking classes and developing our practical skills.
Speaking of tak-ing classes…there is exciting news of the
new Tropical Bonsai School being hosted at Wigert’s Nursery in North Fort Myers. This sounds like it will be a great learning experience for those interested in advancing their bonsai tech-niques and skills.
Pedro Morales has been teach-ing bonsai for many years and is Puerto Rico’s premier bonsai artist. Pedro is an internation-ally recognized bonsai authority. He is very active in the bonsai community around the world. Pedro has been a headliner at the BSF annual convention many times, and has recently hosted the World Bonsai Friendship Federation in San Juan. (If you have never been to a convention in Puerto Rico, you are missing a great event.)
We are fortunate to have Pedro bring his bonsai expertise to Southwest Florida, where he will share his knowledge with a select group of serious students in a three-year advanced class. See page 40 for further information.
We are looking forward to this year’s convention in Orlando. We have the great fortune to be hosting one of the brightest stars in bonsai. Mr. Ryan Neil will be our headliner at this year’s annual convention at the Ramada on June 10–12. I hope everyone
understands just how fortunate we are to have Ryan as our fea-tured artist. Since his return from Japan and his apprenticeship with Masahiko Kimura, Ryan has been on the run, establishing his own nursery and school outside of Porland, Oregon. He is traveling extensively, speaking and demon-strating, and sharing his knowl-edge of the art of bonsai.
Ryan recently returned from Japan, where he helped Kimura-san with the trees that were to be exhibited at Kokofu-ten (the premier annual bonsai exhibit in Japan). We will get to hear about Ryan’s experiences during his pre-sentation about his time in Japan during the “Lunch and Learn.” Be sure to sign up early, as this will defi nitely sell out quickly. See the center of this issue for the regis-tration form.
We look forward to seeing all of you in Orlando and having a great learning experience with our Florida Speakers and Ryan!

provided daily by the hosts. Quing Hui Garden, one of the ten major gardens of China was seen on day three. Outstanding, meticulously-groomed Bonsai blended into the natural sur-roundings, ponds with water lilies, viewing stones, willow
trees and lush tropical foliage among old Chinese pavilions rivaled in beauty with the exhib-ited Penjing. The day ended with a visit to the Taoist Foshan Ancestral Temple. Thousands of people crowded the temple grounds to see the Chinese Lion Dancers. It was the fi rst day of the ten-day celebration for the Independence of China.
A short fl ight to Nanjing was boarded the following day. Nanjing was the capital of the Ming Dynasty. A visit to the Xiaoling Tomb of the fi rst Han
ne hundred thirty-two Bonsai and Suiseki Enthusiasts met on September 29, 2010, in Foshan for their fi rst dinner. Mrs. Helen Su welcomed all the delegates. A multilingual chatter accompanied the tasting of the exotic dishes from the Cantonese Cuisine. Four tour buses were needed for all the participants. The green bus carried all the English speakers from South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and the United States. Rob Kempinski was the guide for this group and trans-lation from and into Chinese was given by Ernie Kuo and John Wang from Los Angeles, California.

The place of destina-tion was Chenchun World of Flowers. Several demonstra-tions of Lignan Style Penjing were given by the Bonsai Clubs of Guandong and Hong Kong. The Exhibition of over 150 very large Chinese Penjing was over-whelming. From Bougainvillea glabra, Buxus, Elaeagnus multifl ora, Fraxinus chinensis, Ginko biloba, Jasminum nudifl orum, Juniperus rigida, Lagerstroemia indica, Ligustrum sinensis, Maba buxifolia,
Myrraya pannicu-lata, Pinus parvifolia, varieties of Pinus thunbergii, Podocarpus nagi, Prunus mume, Pseudolarix amabilis, Punica granatum, Salix babylonica, Tamarix chinensis to Taxus cus-
pidata and many more East Asian species were shown in beautiful containers and elaborate wooden stands. In an adjacent street was a market where stones and bonsai-related items were for sale.
To the delight of everyone, three delicious Chinese meals were

After consideration of this, we may ask why do we not pay more attention to our bonsai roots? Branches are nurtured by healthy roots and a great bonsai is estab-lished by having healthy roots. Constant care and careful atten-tion to repotting times, making sure our soil is perfect, never allowing our trees to become pot bound, all insure that the proper nutrition is fl owing up to the branches and contributing to the structure of a healthy tree.
Good soil is where we need to start. I see so many tropical trees potted in poor soil. Soil which has broken down and stays too wet creates an unhealthy environment, creating roots that are incapable of moving nutrients to the top of the trees. Equally as bad are roots that are so pot-bound there is no hope of creating a beautiful, nebari without a total reconstruction of the root system. This means removal of all the tangled roots in order to grow new roots.
Tangled roots are not nebari! They are nothing more than
unsightly tangled roots. Roots so tangled they cannot move nutri-ents to the top of the tree need to be cut and the tree placed into good soil to promote good place-ment and good growth. These tangled roots have no chance of ever becoming good nebari. We need to remember if we buy a tree that looks like this it will take years to create good nebari and this must be taken into consider-ation when buying a tree. It is not simply nebari because there are a lot of roots tangled together. This is just a sign of poor care on the part of the nursery that grew the tree as “pre-bonsai.”
This story shows a Ficus micro-carpa in stages of creating nebari and the time it takes to rescue a tree from bad root care as pre-bonsai. The story starts in 2008 when I purchased a F. microcarpa bonsai as a project for this article. The tree was in bad soil and was planted in a very deep pot which did not allow the tree to have adequate oxygen to promote healthy roots. This, along with no root pruning and no consistent
Nebari–Improving Rootage on a Ficus microcarpa

e all remember learning the basics of bonsai; it was a constant infl ux of knowledge and advice from artists with whom we studied, clubs we joined and people we met along the way. I remember pouring over books trying to absorb every piece of informa-tion about bonsai and looking at countless pictures in magazines try-ing to fi gure out what made them believable. I think after all this time the nebari (roots) held me in awe of each tree.
Having looked at a lot of trees in nature and done a lot of hiking, the way a tree is placed in nature and the way the roots grip the earth make a tree really impressive. Each tree is married to the earth with a special relationship that shows that time has played a spe-cial bond in the push and pull role it has with the earth. The wind blows, it rains, the earth swells, the tree pushes back and uses its roots to push back and say no, I am staying right here! You will not push me away! After years of struggle and, with some luck, the
tree wins its battle and has established itself in a special place where it will live for years to come.
It’s that end result that draws us to the beauty of the strug-gle. The story! Old
roots moving along the soil in and out, old bark gripping each root, years of swelling and moving up and down thru the earth. The old moss that is clinging to the soil between these beautiful exten-sions of the tree is now visible and in essence the life blood of the tree. We fall in love.

The course will cover techniques including: design, wiring, pot selec-tion, grafting, creating tanuki, driftwood refi nement, along with special professional secrets.
The class structure will consist of morning lectures and demon-strations followed by afternoons hands-on workshops.
As this is a progressive class, we will not be taking any new students for this group in 2012 or 2013. The class will consist of the same group for the complete three-year program. I am sure Pedro has a lot in store for us. He has been hosting the Salvatore Liporace Italian Bonsai School at his nursery in Puerto Rico for several years and has told me this course is very similar in approach, however, all the work will be entirely with tropical bonsai material.
You are encouraged to bring your own trees to work on, or we can
help you select material here at our nursery.
We have a large air-conditioned classroom that will comfort-ably fi t the group. The nursery is stocked with all the supplies you would need – from pots, to wire and tools, all available for purchase.
There are accommodations within a fi ve minute drive from our nursery. We would be happy to assist you with your booking at these local hotels. The space for this special event is limited to 10 to 15 students. The fee for the course is $500.00 per year.
We are accepting payment for 2011 now. That works out to around $70.00 per day to work in an advanced setting with a Tropical Bonsai Master.
Please feel free to contact us to sign up or if you have any addi-tional questions.
