Chase’s Spring TipsSpring is here but still cold at night with a chance of frost till May!
We have most evergreens and a few deciduous bonsai outside on benches already but being very careful with the new growth. If it does freeze again. * Put the plants on the ground and cover with sheets to keep the frost and cold weather off the plants. Many deciduous Bonsai are still protected, a good tip is: * Start pinching new growth to keep them in bounds. Should you miss this spring’s growth you can: * Cut back and leaf prune in June. Remember evergreens need full sun at this moment. * Start fertilizing with both liquid and dry organic fertilizer. Give a call if you have any questions.

JACK SUSTIC: Jack’s interest in bonsai began 30 years ago while serving in the Army in South
Korea. After graduating from Michigan State University he became Greenhouse/Nursery Manager at
Riverbanks Zoo & Botanic Garden in Columbia, SC where he also served as president of the Bonsai
Club of South Carolina. Jack was the first intern to serve at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum,
U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC and was appointed curator in 2002. He has received
formal bonsai training from masters in both the United States and Japan. His bonsai have received
several awards, in 2005 one of his bonsai was selected as an international winner in the World Bonsai
Friendship Federation (WBFF) photo contest and his bonsai have been exhibited in the 2nd and 3rd U.S.
National Bonsai Exhibitions. He served as co-chair of the 5th World Bonsai Convention and currently
serves as Director of the North American Region of the WBFF, President of the North American Bonsai
Federation (NABF) and is an executive board member of the National Bonsai Foundation (NBF). After
retiring as curator in 2016 Jack keeps busy teaching, traveling and maintaining his own bonsai
collection in his home state of Michigan.
CHUCK HARRIS was introduced to bonsai at 14 with the movie the karate kid.
From that moment on I was intrigued by bonsai and Japanese culture. At that time I could find very
little information about this subject until 1989 when the third karate Kid came out; again my interest
was sparked and I've started to pursue a career in horticulture.
While working for Staleys nursery in Schnecksville PA. I was prompted by the Manager to visit
the Philadelphia flower show and the Rosade Bonsai exhibit to get more information about bonsai. This
is where I met Chase and saw real bonsai for the first time. I left with the pamphlet about the studio
and my bonsai journey began.
I frequently visited the Rosade’s over the years after that. With their help and guidance I have
traveled to Japan twice to visit many bonsai nursery’s as well as influential bonsai Masters in Japan. I
have also spend time with Colin Lewis, Gerald Rainville, Danny coffee, Jim Doyle, Bobby Mahler, and
many others. I will be going to Japan then to study at Taisho-en under Mr. Nobuichi Urushibata
Beginning this November.
Thanks to the Rosade’s and Bonsai I have met so many wonderful people and been able to travel
the world and share this art form.
YOUNG CHOE, Kusamono artist, , studied traditional art-ink painting and calligraphy-in her native
Korea before she moved to the United States. She obtained her BS in Horticulture from the University
of Maryland. While volunteering at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, she was able to bring her
artistic talent together with her knowledge of horticulture to create Kusamono. She traveled to Japan to study this unique art form with the master Kusamono artist, Keiko Yamane, a
former student of Saburo Kato. In the world outside the Museum, she worked with native plants at the USDA, NRCS, National Plant
Materials Center in Beltsville, Maryland. Also, she is a propagation horticulturist at the US National
Arboretum. Young currently works at the US National Arboretum.
