Goffs UK=s Doncaster sales complex, which will this year host the
Goffs Orby and Sportsman=s Sales | Goffs UK
GOFFS ORBY,SPORTSMAN=S SALES TOBE HELD IN DONCASTER
Goffs will stage its Orby and Sportsman=s Sales at its Goffs UK
sales complex in Doncaster this year rather than at Kildare
Paddocks in Ireland. The dates for the sales have also been
slightly adjusted; the Sportsman=s Sale has been moved a week
earlier to Sept. 24 and 25, while the Orby Sale will take place
slightly later than planned on Oct. 1 and 2 to allow buyers who
wish to attend Books 1 and 2 of Keeneland September to self-
isolate for two weeks before traveling to Doncaster.
The location change is in light of the Irish government=s 14-day
quarantine requirement for visitors to the country.
AIn view of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current Irish and
localised protocols, and in the best interests of our clients and
the Irish breeding industry, the board of Goffs are announcing
today that it will, on a purely once off occasion, stage the Orby
and Sportsman=s Sales in the Goffs UK sales complex in
Doncaster,@ said Goffs Chairman Eimear Mulhern. AGoffs
shareholders have always sought to provide the Irish industry
with an independent sales company with its own ethos, integrity
and values and it is in line with this core principle that we have
decided to stage the sale at our own premises in the UK.@

TATTS IRELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
MOVES TO NEWMARKET In light of Ireland=s widespread 14-day quarantine requirement
for visitors, Tattersalls Ireland will stage its September Yearling
Sale on Sept. 21 to 23 at Park Paddocks in Newmarket rather
than its Fairyhouse headquarters.
AThe decision to relocate the Tattersalls Ireland September
Yearling Sale to the Tattersalls headquarters in Newmarket has
not been an easy one, but the sale traditionally attracts large
numbers of overseas visitors and at present Britain, while also
being the source of many of our buyers, is significantly more
accessible than Ireland,@ said Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive
Officer Matt Mitchell. AThe primary objective at Tattersalls
Ireland since the outbreak of the global pandemic has been to
deliver sales which combine the minimum of disruption with the
optimal conditions for both vendors and purchasers alike.@

Goffs Orby, Sportsman=s Sales To Be Held In Doncaster
cont. from p1
Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby added, ANaturally
our first preference would have been to hold what is the Irish
National Yearling Sale in Kildare Paddocks but, given the current
issues caused by Covid-19, we judge that is not in the best
interests of our vendors who have supported us with a stellar
selection of wonderful yearlings. Our job is to attract the widest
and most diverse group of buyers to our sales and we feel that
can best be achieved in 2020 by moving our yearling sales to our
UK site as a one-off to deal with the uniquely challenging
problems caused by Covid-19.@
AThe showing areas for the yearlings [at Doncaster] are second
to none and we will ensure that the facilities for attendees are
enhanced as much as possible once we have taken the UK
Government=s directives into account,@ Beeby added. AIn
addition Doncaster is easily accessible from every part of the UK
and is just 1 1/2 hours from central London by train whilst our
superb network of international agents will continue to promote
these world-class Orby yearlings around the globe. Alongside
that Goffs Online will allow absent buyers to participate in the
sale and we will ensure that clear videos of yearlings are
available for inspection as well as accommodating any buyers
who want to bid by telephone.
AIn short, Orby and Sportsman=s will provide their usual world-
class service and the only difference will be geographical on this
occasion@.
The remaining Goffs sales programme for 2020 will stay in
Ireland, including the Goffs November Foal and Breeding Stock
Sale. Any vendors not wishing to sell in the UK will be
accommodated in the Goffs Autumn Sale on Nov. 2 to 4.
AThe situation with our market-leading foal sale is entirely
different as by far the biggest group of buyers are Irish so, to be
clear, the November Sale will be held in Kildare Paddocks on its
planned dates,@ Beeby added. AGoffs foals are true market
leaders with Europe=s top-priced foals being sold at Goffs in five
of the last six years headed by the world=s best in 2019 at i1.2
million, and this year of all years it makes most sense to sell Irish
foals in Ireland whilst the Breeding Stock section will be
enhanced with our online platform, videos and agents on the
ground.@
The Orby and Sportsman=s sales will continue to have the full
support of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.
AWe would far prefer that the Orby and Sportsman=s Sales be
held in Ireland but regrettably, that is not realistic in the current
uncertain climate,@ said Horse Racing Ireland Chief Executive
Brian Kavanagh.

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Moves to
Newmarket cont. from p1
Mitchell continued, AWe are confident that, bearing in mind
the prevailing COVID-19 related restrictions in Ireland, this
difficult decision allows us to fulfil this objective and to provide
as vibrant a market as we possibly can.@
TATTERSALLS ASCOT MOVED TO SEPT. 7 The Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale has been moved forward a
day and will now take place on Sept. 7 at Park Paddocks. The
move is designed to accommodate those wishing to attend both
the Ascot sale and Arqana=s Deauville Select yearling sale, which
has been moved forward two weeks to Sept. 9 to 11 in light of
new French quarantine restrictions in the UK. The Ascot yearling
sale enjoyed a significant boost on Thursday when Miss Amulet
(Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) took the G2 Lowther S. at York,
following on from last month=s win by Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil
{Ire}) in the G3 Molecomb S. at Glorious Goodwood. Thirty-four
2-year-old winners and nine black-type winners have been
sourced at the sale since 2019 at an average price of ,12,500,
and the 257 yearlings catalogued this year are all eligible for the
,150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

Jim Crowley, Charlie Hills and Bob Grace celebrate after Battaash
won the Nunthorpe | racingfotos.comHE NORMALLY DOESN’T HAVE TO
BATTLE, HE USUALLY HAS HIS RACES
WON AT HALFWAY, BUT HE REALLY
HAD TO BE A MAN TODAY AND
STUCK HIS NECK OUT.Jim Crowley on Battaash
BATTAASH COMPLETES AMAZING FOUR-
TIMER FOR SHADWELL
Shadwell had watched the first three races fall their way at
York=s Ebor Festival on Friday and so there were more than the
usual share of nerves as their flagship Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel
{Ire}) went to post for the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. In the
event, he gave the team their most anxious moments of all the
races they conquered on the card as he had to graft to subdue
yet another flying filly from Michael Dods=s Darlington yard in
Que Amoro (Ire) (Es Que Love {Ire}). Finally managing to shake
off her attentions in the last 100 yards, the 1-2 favourite earned
a length success as Moss Gill (Ire) (No Nay Never) also excelled
himself two lengths away in third. The landmark win followed
that in the opening handicap of Alfaatik (GB) (Sea the Stars
{Ire}), of Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) in the
G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and of Minzaal (Ire)
(Mehmas {Ire}) in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S.
ARelief is the right word,@ trainer Charlie Hills commented.
AIt=s great to see the team do so well--they are all so
professional in everything they do and it=s been well rewarded.@
On Battaash=s best days, Jim Crowley has been merely a
passenger on Battaash and in all four of his successes in
Goodwood=s G2 King George S., his track record-breaking win
here 12 months ago, his 2017 G1 Prix de l=Abbaye romp and
emotional victory in the June 16 G1 King=s Stand S. at Royal
Ascot he has only had to stay in the saddle. This affair, on the
softest ground that the 6-year-old has encountered since his
tame effort in October=s Abbaye at ParisLongchamp, he was
made to engage a long way out by the stand=s rail runner Que
Amoro who had previously finished third behind Moss Gill in the
course-and-distance Listed City Walls S. Dods conjured two
Nunthorpe wins out of Mecca=s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and
an Abbaye victory out of Mabs Cross (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), who
was also narrowly denied in this in 2018 and for a brief period
heading to the furlong pole it looked as if he had produced
another giant-killer from his yard.
Battaash had started out up the centre of the track, but
Crowley explained afterwards that his less-than-direct passage
from halfway was partly due to the prevailing high wind and
partly due to the respect shown to the filly. AWe went one hell
of a gallop and there=s a tailwind, which is blowing across the
track towards the stands rail,@ he explained. Cont. p5

Jim Crowley celebrates after riding a four-timer
at York on Friday | PA Media
Cont.
AI tried not to let the leader go too far ahead and fair play to
the second, she ran a mighty race and was hard to pass. He
doesn=t normally have to battle--he usually has his races won at
halfway, but he really had to be a man today and stuck his neck
out. He really galloped and
tried really hard, so we got it
just right. He=s really changed,
this horse--he took a nice bite
going down but he was good at
the start and everything was
like clockwork. He=s a horse of
a lifetime and to get one like
this you are lucky.@
Charlie Hills has in mind a
return to ParisLongchamp, but
does not want the ground to
be as soft as last year. AThat
was tough out there today and
experience has probably been
what has counted,@ he said.
AHe=s been beaten twice in the past here on ground like that,
but he=s grown up mentally and has matured with age. He
behaved the best ever today and with conditions like that--the
high wind--it can=t be easy for any of those horses down there at
the start. The obvious route to take is the Abbaye, but if the
ground is like it was last year we=d probably avoid it and look
elsewhere. I=ll speak to Sheikh Hamdan and we=ll make a plan.@
Whether Battaash is there on Arc day or not, Dods is keen to
go there with the runner-up and
he said, AShe would have
preferred faster ground and I
didn=t think we=d get that close, so
she=s run a blinder. To get that
close to a horse like that is a hell
of a performance. She=s seriously
quick--when she ran here the
other month, because the ground
had gone a bit, we half-saved her
to get home. I said to [jockey]
Paul [Mulrennan] to take no
prisoners today, to just go,
because that=s the only way to
ride her. She burns horses off.
She=s not in the Abbaye--we
decided we wouldn=t put her in and if she ran a big race here
we=d supplement her. With what=s going on, we didn=t know
what would happen, but that is probably where she=d go.@

Enbihaar goes the distance in the Lonsdale Cup | racingfotos.com
ABLE DEPUTY While Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) is away, Enbihaar
(Ire) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) has been allowed to play stayer
and she ably demonstrated her aptitude for the division when
taking York=s G2 Weatherbys
Hamilton Lonsdale Cup on
Friday. In the past two years
before Covid, this was the race
that saw her exalted stablemate
wrap up the ,1-million bonus
but with that pot unavailable
this time and Clarehaven=s
golden boy set on a different
path it was up to Shadwell=s
imposing mare to help fill a
void. Long regarded by man-of-
the-moment Jim Crowley as
made for this type of test, the
15-8 favourite who already
boasted four wins at this level
tracked the leading trio throughout the early stages travelling
comfortably. Committed on the front end two out as the
G1 Gold Cup and G1 Goodwood Cup runner-up Nayef Road (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) fought hard in customary fashion, she stayed on
adequately to score by 3/4 of a length from Stratum (GB)
(Dansili {GB}), with the same margin back to Nayef Road in third.
AI was always confident she would stay and we got racing a
long way out. It was a war up the
straight,@ the winning rider
commented. ALots of credit to
her. She really toughed it out--
she is a super mare.@
Very few mares can boast
successes in this, two editions of
Goodwood=s G2 Lillie Langtry S.,
a G2 Park Hill S. and a G2
Lancashire Oaks, but Enbihaar is
something above average and
her journey is yet to culminate.
Thady Gosden was on hand to
pay tribute and said, AWe always
thought she=d stay two miles, as
she has that lovely long stride on
her. She=s a big filly with a deep
chest so there was everything to suggest she=d get it all day long.
The [G1] Qatar Prix de Royallieu, in which she was third to
Anapurna last year on Arc day--that=s the aim.@

G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup cont.
Gosden added, AShe=d stayed in training this season with the
aim of winning a Group 1 and that will be her best chance,
against fillies. She handled the ground, but it=s more dead than
soft, obviously the ground would be the worry come October,
and we=ll just have to hope it isn=t too deep. She=s hard as nails,
she=s definitely maintained her ability and beaten some good
stayers there.@

Minzaal, third black-type winner for first-season Mehmas |racingfotos
MINZAAL DAZZLES IN THE GIMCRACK On a day when York belonged to the royal blue of Shadwell,
the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. played host to one
of the operation=s youngbloods as the new juvenile sprinting
sensation Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) cut a dash in the gloom.
Sent off the 5-2 favourite coming off an impressive Salisbury
novice success over this six-furlong trip on Aug. 9, the bay
missed the kick and was adrift early but Jim Crowley was oozing
confidence and in no mood to hurry. Tanking his way to the lead
passing the two-furlong pole, he drifted right but was far too
good en route to clocking a quick time given the rain-softened
conditions. Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was two lengths back in
second, with Mystery Smiles (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) 3/4 of a length
further away in third. Tally Ho Stud=s first-season sire now has a
trio of stars in his first crop after Supremacy (Ire) and Method
(Ire) and it is impossible at present to state unequivocally which
holds the bragging rights. AHe is ultra professional and was
backing up quite quick, but didn=t take much out of himself that
day at Salisbury,@ Crowley said after completing the third leg of
his four-timer. AI couldn=t believe the ease of the way he moved
into the race and he=s got a great mind which will stand him in
good stead. It=s nice to have found one and I think that=s going to
be his best trip. He=s the sort of horse for the Commonwealth
Cup next year.@
Fourth on debut behind Mohawk King (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in
Ascot=s ACrocker Bulteel@ maiden on July 25, the bay had already
taken a sizeable leap forward last time and this display suggests
he will take high rank in the end-of-season standings. Trainer
Owen Burrows said, AThat was very straightforward. He didn=t
jump out very quick, but I don=t think Jim wanted to set him
alight in any case as he has so much speed.
TDN EUROPE • PAGE 10 OF 17 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • 22 AUGUST 2020
AHe just lets him find his rhythm and Jim said he couldn=t
believe how well he was going--if anything he got there too
soon, but there was nothing else he could do. I think he=s all
speed, I don=t think he needs to be going further than six
furlongs, so we=ll be looking at the [G1] Middle Park rather than
Dewhurst and it will be straight there. I don=t see him as a
Guineas horse, more Commonwealth Cup and Jim thinks that,
too.@
Pedigree Notes Minzaal=s unraced dam Pardoven (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) is a half

Aidan O=Brien, winner of 13 renewals of the G2 Futurity S., threebehind record holder Dr. Vincent O=Brien | Emma Berry
FUTURITY IS THE KEY AT THE CURRAGH While York=s Ebor Festival wraps up with its ,250,000 feature
handicap on Saturday, The Curragh stages the G2 Galileo Irish
EBF Futurity S. and G2 A.R.M. Holding Debutante S. for the
budding Classic contenders of
2021. Twelve months ago, Love
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was finishing
fifth to Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the
Moon {Ger}) in the Debutante
which underlines what these vital
staging posts can play host to.
While Aidan O=Brien was unable
to extend his record tally of a
dozen winners despite having that
ammunition, the fillies= contest
has been collected by his former
stable luminaries Lillie Langtry
(Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}),
Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
and Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), so
it is clear that he targets this with
his elite. The Ballydoyle 2-year-olds have hardly shone so far this
term, but the July 4 G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF
Fillies= Sprint S. winner Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is the
pick of Seamie Heffernan as she steps up from six furlongs
having finished third in the July 19 G2 Airlie Stud S. here.
Aidan=s other contender Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})
was fourth behind Donnacha=s
Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and
Joseph=s TDN Rising Star Pretty
Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) in
the G3 Silver Flash S. over this
seven-furlong trip at
Leopardstown Aug. 6 and that
form could be key. One notable
withdrawal from the Silver Flash
was Jim Bolger=s 11-length July
28 Galway maiden scorer
Meala (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus) and
she will pose fierce opposition to
the O=Briens if in the same heart.
One domestic pattern race that
Aidan does not hold the record in
is the Futurity, where the late
great Dr. Vincent O=Brien still holds sway with his 16 renewals.

(American Pharoah), who was a neck second to the stable=s
Military Style (War Front) in Leopardstown=s G3 Tyros S. over
this seven-furlong trip Aug. 6. Whether Van Gogh is another
Giant=s Causeway, Hawk Wing, Gleneagles (Ire) or Churchill (Ire)
remains to be seen, but as a son of the Triple Crown hero and
the operation=s 2001 G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas
heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) he is a truly special
commodity.
Missing from the Tyros as Leopardstown=s ground firmed up
was Alpha Racing 2020's Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who
had impressed when winning by nine lengths on debut over that
course and distance July 1. This easy surface will suit ideally and
Jessie Harrington could be celebrating another major win with a
son of the sire after the G1 Phoenix S. success of Lucky Vega
(Ire) earlier this month. AHe=s in great form, he=s doing very
well,@ Harrington said. AThe only reason I didn=t run him at
Leopardstown was because the ground was very quick that day.
I took him out then, but he has been in great form since and
we=re hoping for a big run from him.@
Other important 2-year-old action takes place at Deauville,
with the G2 Shadwell Prix du Calvados featuring two significant
overseas raiders in the July 21 Listed Star S. winner Fev Rover
(Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) and the O=Callaghans= impressive July 7
Roscommon maiden scorer No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa
{Ire}) with the stranded Frankie booked for the ride on the
latter. He also partners the July 5 G2 Oaks d=Italia heroine
Auyantepui (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in the G2 Shadwell Prix
de la Nonette, but she should at best be playing second-fiddle to
the sponsors= five-length June 14 G1 Prix Saint Alary winner
Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) in that 10-furlong contest.
At York, the G2 Sky Bet City of York S. sees Lael Stable=s dual
G1 Prix de la Foret heroine One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock
{Aus}) look to build on her latest success over this seven-furlong
trip in the G3 Oak Tree S. at Goodwood July 31. She should be a
tough nut to crack with conditions ideal, but Roger Varian could
have thrown a spanner in the works by dropping San Donato
(Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) back in trip following his eyecatching
effort when sixth in the G1 Sussex S. also at Goodwood July 29.

Rathbarry Stud=s Kodi Bear (by Kodiac {GB}) was handed his
first black-type winner here as Cobh built on his latest second in
the seven-furlong Listed Pat Eddery S.--in which the day=s
Convivial Maiden winner Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was
back in third--at Ascot on July 25. Tracking the early leaders, the
bay took over passing the two-furlong pole and was driven out
to hold Fancy Man as the leader Surprise Exhibit faded to third.
The winner, who was successful over six furlongs on debut at
Haydock on July 5, is out of a granddaughter of the G1 Prix

second in the G1 Cheveley Park S. He is currently the last known

having also placed second in the G3 Flame of Tara S. and third in
the G3 Silver Flash S. last term. Expertly cajoled by Seamie
Heffernan, the bay swooped late from mid-division to grab Up
Helly Aa and Helvic Dream on the line. AShe is very talented and
very easy to like, but often she doesn=t do what we expected her

KENTUCKY DERBY TO BERUN WITHOUT FANS
by Bill Finley
Just nine days after unveiling plans to allow about 23,000
spectators to attend the running of the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky
Derby, Churchill Downs announced Friday that no fans will be
allowed to attend the race.
"We have made the difficult decision to hold this year's
Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5 without fans," read a statement from
the track. "Churchill Downs and all of our team members feel
strongly that it is our collective responsibility as citizens of
Louisville to do all we responsibly can to protect the health,
safety and security of our community in these challenging times
and believe that running the Derby without spectators is the
best way to do that. We deeply regret the disappointment this
will bring to our loyal fans."
Churchill Downs first announced plans June 29 to allow
spectators. That came at a time when the COVID-19 numbers in
Kentucky were relatively under control. However, the June
announcement never specified how many fans would be
allowed to attend. That was answered Aug. 12 when the 23,000
figure was released along with a 62-page operations plan. The
plans included a mandate that patrons wear masks and the
closing of the infield.
But the idea of having fans at the Derby seemed overly
ambitious at the time because the coronavirus numbers in the
state were climbing. Cont. p3
'MAX' BACK ON BIG STAGE IN PACIFIC
CLASSICby Joe Bianca
The last time Maximum Security (New Year's Day) traveled 10
furlongs, he crossed the wire first before the disqualification
heard around the world in the GI Kentucky Derby. A ton has
happened with the colt in the year-and-change since then: an
Eclipse championship, a buy-in from Coolmore, a trip across the
world to win the G1 Saudi Cup, doping allegations, a barn
switch. Through it all, the horse who controversy seems to
follow like a shadow will return to 1 1/4 miles and Grade I
company with questions to answer in Saturday's GI TVG Pacific
Classic at Del Mar.
Following his Derby demotion with a runner-up effort at 1-20
in last summer's TVG.com Pegasus S. at Monmouth, the bay
found redemption by annexing the GI TVG.com Haskell
Invitational S. on the Jersey Shore. Cont. p4

Kentucky Derby to be Run Without Fans cont. from p1
According to the New York Times, there were 177 new cases in
the state June 29 when the first announcement was made and
1,109 Aug. 12 at the time of the second announcement. The
Times reported that were 1,067 cases Thursday.
A gathering of 23,000 at the Derby would have been the
largest crowd assembled for any U.S. sporting event since the
pandemic began.
On Thursday, Louisville mayor Greg Fischer said he would not
be attending the Derby. He cited the high number of new
coronavirus cases and protests being planned for Sept. 5 tied to
the death of Breonna Taylor.
The Churchill announcement included a statement from
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, who backed the track's
decision.
"The virus is still aggressively spreading in Kentucky, and the
White House has announced that Jefferson County and the City
of Louisville are in a 'red zone' based on increases in cases. This
week alone the county had more than 2,300 new cases.
Beshear said, "I applaud Churchill Downs for continuing to
monitor the virus and for making the right and responsible
decision. I am asking all Kentuckians to take action to stop the
spread of the virus so we can get back to the many traditions we
enjoy, like the Kentucky Derby."
Churchill officials said in the announcement they had made the
decision after consulting with public health authorities and that
the positivity rate had gone from 2% in June to its current figure
of 10%.
"This year's Kentucky Derby was never going to be the
celebration we're used to, but I could not be more grateful to
our tremendous team members and community partners for all
of their efforts. We've left no stones unturned and reached the
right decision," said Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Inc.
"We hope our fans, the Louisville community and our country
find an opportunity over the coming weeks to reflect on the
challenges we have faced this year as a community and as a
nation, and work together toward a better and safer future."
Only essential personnel and participants will be permitted on
property.
Ticket holders for all Derby week race dates and related
programming will be automatically issued a refund.
The June 20 GI Belmont S., which was the first leg of the Triple
Crown this year, was also held without fans. No announcements
regarding fans at the Oct. 3 GI Preakness S. have been issued yet
by the Maryland Jockey Club.

Maximum Security | Horsephotos
Pac Classic cont. from p1
After being forced to miss several months with a minor injury,
he scored victories in the GIII Bold Ruler H. and GI Cigar Mile H.
to wrap up his divisional title.
Just nine days after he notched
a hard-fought triumph in the
inaugural Saudi Cup in his
4-year-old debut, Maximum
Security's trainer Jason Servis
was indicted by federal
prosecutors for alleged doping
of horses including Maximum
Security himself, prompting a
move to the Bob Baffert barn.
Making his much-anticipated
return in the July 25 GII San
Diego H., he ground out a nose
victory at 2-5, the 10th time in
11 career races he crossed the
wire first, earning a 101 Beyer,
10 points shy of his top effort.
C R K Stable's Midcourt (Midnight Lute), who nearly dueled
Maximum Security into defeat, returns to take another crack at
the champion. Lightly raced at five years old, the gelding reeled
off four straight victories last year culminating in a 5 3/4-length
conquest of the GIII Native Diver S. at this oval in November and
picked up another open-length graded tally in the GII San
Pasqual S. two starts later Feb. 1 at Santa Anita. A narrow third
in the GI Santa Anita H., his
initial 10-furlong try, Mar. 7, he
bounced back from a
badly-beaten fifth in the GI Gold
Cup S. June 6 in Arcadia to
stretch Maximum Security all
the way to the wire in the San
Diego.
Hronis Racing's Higher Power
(Medaglia d'Oro), a surprise
runaway winner of last year's
Pacific Classic, tries to recapture
that top form. Going turf to dirt
for a 5 1/2-length score in the
Del Mar meet centerpiece, the
bay failed to build on that run
when a distant third in both the
GI Awesome Again S. and GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic
before finishing last as the favorite in the GI Pegasus World Cup
Invitational S. Cont. p5

Sharp Samurai | Benoit
Bouncing back a bit to be runner-up in the Gold Cup, he
proved no match for the top pair in the San Diego, finishing
6 1/4 lengths back in third.
Sharp Samurai (First Samurai), a multiple graded stakes winner
on turf, will make his first dirt start since running sixth in a Santa
Anita optional claimer in March of 2017. He was last seen
finishing a close runner-up in the GII Eddie Read S. on the local
lawn July 26.
MAXIMUM RESPECT FOR SECURITY
>MEASURES'by Chris McGrath
It=s not his fault. But the fact is that Maximum Security (New
Year's Day) has become one of the most chronicled, most
contentious Thoroughbreds of recent times. From a lawsuit over
his disqualification at Churchill, to the scandal engulfing his
former trainer, to his frozen Arabian treasures, to the merit (or
otherwise) of his debut for a new barn, one way or another, this
extraordinary creature cannot keep out of the headlines.
If feeling mischievous, indeed, one might almost say that he will
not be the only polarizing incumbent facing a critical test in the
first week of November. Cont. p6

Maximum Security overtakes Midcourt | Benoit
This Side Up cont.
True, Maximum Security can't
strictly be described as
incumbent, at least not in terms
of the GI Longines Breeders' Cup
Classic. He sat out the race last
year, and was duly confined to a
divisional championship.
Nonetheless he unmistakably
returned from the desert in
February as the horse setting
standards for the next
generation.
Since then, of course, he has
contributed a chaos all of his
own to the wider upheavals of
2020. Who would have thought
not only that Maximum Security could generate still more
splenetic debate than he did in the Derby, but also that a new
name is yet to be engraved on the trophy, nearly 16 months
after his own was effaced by that of Country House (Lookin At
Lucky)?
Even the horses he runs against seem to become mere
silhouettes against glare of his extrovert talent and career. Very
few people, for instance,
stopped to ask whether the
main reason Maximum Security
was pushed so hard in the GII
San Diego H. might simply be
that Midcourt (Midnight Lute)
has now matured into an
extremely potent racehorse.
Instead they treated him as
measuring either an incipient
decline in Maximum Security, or
merely the various mitigations
that were certainly available to
him (long layoff, tactics used by
his substitute jockey, etc). Never
mind that Midcourt's brilliant
performance, to some of us, was
something that has been brewing for a good while and never
mind the fascinating questions it raised about his own future.
At least their rematch in the GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar
Saturday will permit Midcourt a second hearing. Poor old
Country House, in contrast, sidled back onto the news agenda
this week almost with an air of apology.

Country House and Bill Mott | Coady
This Side Up cont.
Yet while his advent at Darby Dan for 2021 received
approximately one zillionth of the column inches meanwhile
claimed by the horse he supplanted in the Derby, the beauty of
this game is that Country House could yet have the last laugh.
Which would be no less than his connections deserve. They
would hardly have chosen the uncomfortable manner in which
they requited the Derby craving that unites every American
horseman. Very soon afterwards, moreover, they had to
relinquish any hope that Country House could restore due
attention to his own merits, out on the track, instead
compressing all ambition into the single, desperate prayer that
he might recover from laminitis.
How gratifying, then, that he has safely secured a sequel to
what was treated by many, at 65-to-1, as a pretty irritating
supporting role in the Maximum Security drama. Certainly he
will benefit from the best of stewardship, at his historic new
home, and he has been priced as a virtual bet-to-nothing. His
fee is just $7,500, and you can even get a lifetime breeding right
in exchange for two foalings at a bare $5,000.
Country House is by one of the most underrated sires of his
time, out of a mare whose two winners from just three other
foals of racing age include one at graded stakes level. But the
golden hinge of his pedigree is the Sam-Son matriarch No Class,
who famously belied her name as the dam of four champions.
Her celebrated daughter Classy 'n Smart (also dam of Dance
Smartly) produced Lookin At Lucky's sire Smart Strike and her
son Sky Classic is the sire of Country House's Grade I-placed
granddam.
Quite clearly, the expertise of Bill Mott had long warranted the
formal gilding of a Derby success. In the event, however, he
must almost feel as though the Churchill slop had smeared the
protagonists with some indelible curse; Country House, never to
race again and Maximum Security, as it turns out, seldom to
break free of controversy.
Someday, perhaps, the Country House team will be granted a
chance to purge all bitterness from this bittersweet saga. Who
knows? Someday Mott could train a son of Country House to
win the race--and, this time, on a straight knockout.
Even the bare form of County House's final rehearsal, closing
from off the pace for third in the GI Arkansas Derby, has
acquired a persuasive luster through the subsequent endeavors
of Omaha Beach (War Front) and Improbable (City Zip). That
day Country House simply got the points he needed for a Derby
gate. Three weeks later, he got the cavalry stampede he needed
to draw out all his toughness and stamina.
Whatever the merits of the case weighed by the Churchill
stewards, and by various lawyers since, Country House finished
the Derby like a colt that would take a world of beating in the GI
Belmont S. And who knows where his ongoing maturity--his
third birthday fell four days after the Derby--might yet have
taken him, in those other races by which we judge a Classic
racehorse?
Taken alone, away from the feuding and the furore, his Derby
performance was a coming-of-age. It was achieved by Mott
sending him out there to learn on the job, with a race every
month since December, taking in five different states. Cont. p8

Country House | Horsephotos
Got Stormy | Sarah Andrew
Country House appeared to be motoring on Nodouble gas,
piped from the sire of No Class, one of the toughest and most
indefatigable campaigners of the postwar era. What a cruel
irony, then, that he should then have been unravelled by a
luckless physical malady.
Country House will carry one of two consecutive asterisks in
the Derby annals--neither, of course, suggesting the slightest
deficiency or culpability. But perhaps the capricious fortunes of
the Turf may yet offer both these crops some equalizing,
symmetrical final drama, bringing all the opprobrium and
discord to a clean, coherent finale.
An authoritative success for Maximum Security at Del Mar
would set up a redemptive showdown at Keeneland with
whichever sophomore finally engraves his name below that of
Country House on the Classic roll of honor. Because the
September Derby, as things stand, certainly has an auspiciously
poised, triangular aspect: an East Coast monster at the apex,
with a baseline challenge persisting from both the Midwest,
through Art Collector (Bernardini), and the West, through
Midcourt's buddy Honor A.P. (Honor Code).
In view of his trainer's genius, and that leisurely explosion in
his workout last week, I certainly haven't given up on Honor A.P.
despite his recent reverse. These animals are always a work in
progress. It may ultimately prove, for instance, that Midcourt
will reserve his very best for a mile, but he could hardly pass up
a storied Grade I in his backyard with just a handful of runners.
Either way, the continued fulfilment of his potential would never
have got even this far in less patient and sensitive hands.
As it happens, between Mott and the vets, much the same
could be said of Country House. And if we'll never know quite
how far he might have progressed, on the track, at least his
salvaged stud career might let him give us a hint.

FOURSTARDAVE
Champion Uni (More Than Ready) and MGISW Got Stormy
(Get Stormy) continue their rivalry Saturday as they look to
continue dominating their male counterparts in Saratoga=s

The two chestnuts met for the first time in last year=s renewal
of this event, in which Got Stormy was a 2 1/2-length victress
over the re-opposing Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) with Uni
in third. After that Got Stormy went to the GI Woodbine Mile,
hoping to follow in the famous hoofprints of fellow Mark Casse
trainee Tepin (Bernstein), but came up a half-length short.
Meanwhile, Uni went to Keeneland, where she scored a decisive
victory in the GI First Lady S. in October. Cont. p9

Nov. 2 and this time Uni got the better of her rival, storming
home to a 1 1/2-length triumph over Got Stormy with
stablemate Without Parole (Frankel {GB}) in third. Clinching the
Eclipse Award for top turf female with that win, Uni made her
first start of the season at Belmont June 27, completing the
trifecta behind her talented younger stablemate
Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).
"She missed some time with a splint issue, and we stopped
breezing for five or six weeks," said Bradley Weisbord of
BSW/Crow Bloodstock, who manages Uni on behalf of her
owners. "The ground might have been a little soften the Just a
Game and Joel didn't think she got through it great, but she was
short, and she really needed the race. She just had her best
breeze of the year last week and we weren't completely sure
about this race. We were 50-50 between the Fourstardave and
the [GII] Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill, but the breeze is what
gave Chad the confidence to run her, so she's sitting on go."
Got Stormy, on the other hand has made five starts since the
Breeders= Cup, closing 2019 with a win in the GI Matriarch S.
Dec. 1. Fourth in the GIII Endeavour S. at Tampa Feb. 8, her best
effort so far this season was a close second in the GI Frank E.
Kilroe Mile Mar. 7. The Gary Barber colorbearer checked in
fourth in her last two outings at Belmont in the June 3
GIII Beaugay S. and the July 4 GIII Poker S.
"She's training well and she's back to Saratoga, which is where
she did her best running last year, so we're hoping for the best,"
Casse said. "We know she likes that course, we know that she
likes firm turf. She's got to come with her A game. She's the
same horse, she looks great and trains great. She's just been a
little bit unlucky. She ran over some good turf courses and she
wants it to be really firm."
Raging Bull kicked off this term with a win in the GI Shoemaker
Mile S. at Santa Anita May 25 and was a close third behind
Classic winner War of Will (War Front) in Keeneland=s
rescheduled GI Maker=s Mark Mile July 10.
WHETHER WRESTLING OR HORSE RACING,
CARUSO HAS EXCELLED AT HIGHEST LEVELSby Bill Finley
What Mike Caruso missed most when his collegiate wrestling
career was over was the competition, the fierce desire to win
and the nervous excitement that would build up in him before
every match. It wasn't just that he was good, it was that he felt
he had to win every time. Forty-three years after he last
wrestled and wrapped up his third NCAA championship, Caruso
has recaptured those feelings, discovering them in horse racing.
"I get butterflies in my stomach before every race," he said.
"That means it is meaningful. That's what my coaches tried to
communicate to me. He said that the really great athletes are
great because winning and doing their best means everything to
them We had kids on the team with a lot of talent but it wasn't a
big deal to them. If they lost they almost didn't care."
Michael Caruso (far right) with

So he knows how he is going to feel watching at home before Uni (GB) (More Than Ready), a horse he owns along with Mike Dubb, Sol Kumin and Robert LaPenta, goes into the gate for Saturday's GI Fourstardave H. at Saratoga. His stomach will churn and his palms may get a little sweaty. He says he will feel the same way when his $20,000 claimer Heavy Roller (Malibu Moon) goes in the day's fourth race.
"People ask me how long are you going to stay in racing? As long as I still get the butterflies in my stomach before a race, I will still do it," he said. Cont. p10

Caruso & partners with Monomoy Girl | Coglianese
Caruso cont.
It's a way of being that has served him well as a wrestler, a
businessman and a Thoroughbred owner.
Caruso, 74, who races under the name of Bethlehem Stable,
was introduced to the sport as a child growing up in Newark, N.J.
His father, who died when he was 17, would take him once a
year for a special outing to Monmouth.
He was introduced to wrestling in high school at St. Benedict's
Prep in Newark. He started off as 4-foot-11, 81-pound freshman
with a "little man's complex." By the time he was done, he had
amassed an 81-0 record in high school.
Next stop was Lehigh University, where he went 57-1 and won
the national championship in the 123-pound weight division as a
sophomore, junior and senior. Back then, freshmen could not
compete on the varsity level. What made the feat even more
remarkable was that all three years he beat the same person,
Michigan's Bob Fehrs. After the last of the three losses in 1967,
Fehrs burst into tears. During
the awards ceremony, Caruso
reached out and held Fehrs's
hand to console him. A
photographer captured the
gesture and the picture remains
one of the most iconic in
wrestling history.
Caruso, now semi-retired,
went on to have a successful
career in the insurance industry.
But he never forgot those
summer afternoons spent at
Monmouth with his father. He
bought his first horse in the late
seventies and won his first race
in 1982.
"I just loved the competition of racing," he said.
He wasn't playing at the top level until he was introduced to
Dubb, who is partners with him on most of his horses. Dubb, he
said, opened his eyes to a different way of doing things. Rather
than owning horses himself, he would go into partnerships with
Dubb and others. That way he could afford to be involved with
many more horses. Currently, he owns parts of about 100
horses.
"I had half a dozen horses and they were okay," he said. "Mike
taught me if you get four, five partners, instead of having six
horses you can have 30 horses and have five times the fun, race
five times as much, spread your risk and make a lot of new
friends. I thought that was a great philosophy."
His first major success came in the 2011 GI Spinaway, which he
won with Grace Hall (Empire Maker), a horse he owned in
partnership with Dubb and Stuart Grant. The filly was named
after the gymnasium where Lehigh had its home wrestling
matches. Grace Hall now includes the Caruso Wrestling
Complex, named in honor of Caruso, a 1991 inductee into the
National Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Four years later, Caruso won his first Breeders' Cup race with
Wavell Avenue (Harlington) in the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Filly &
Mare Sprint for a partnership group that included Dubb, Kumin
and David Simon.
Things would only get better.
"We really wanted to take the next step up and really race at
the top level," he said.
Caruso was winning regularly at the highest levels by 2018, the
year he campaigned Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), his first Eclipse
Award winner.
"When I met Mike I thought if I could ever just win a stakes
race," Caruso said. "Winning a Grade I was almost out of the
question. When Monomoy Girl
had her big year in 2018, we
won something like 40 graded
stakes. It seemed like every
other week we were winning
two or three stakes and
sometimes two or three in day.
It was surreal."
He never did slow down.
Champion turf mare Uni and
champion juvenile filly British
Idiom(Flashback) gave Caruso
and partners two more Eclipse
Awards in 2019.
Few owners in the country
were doing better, but many
didn't even know who Caruso was. He was always taking a
backseat to high-profile owners in Dubb and Kumin. He ran
under a stable name and the horses rarely competed in his colors.
"[Bloodstock agent] Brad [Weisbord], Stu Grant, Mike Dubb,
they are the ones who do all the heavy lifting," he said. "They go
to the sales, they do the research, they're calling around to
make deals on horses. They should be the ones who have their
names in the limelight. I told Mike that it's so much easier for
the horses to run in his colors. It's not a big deal to me. If he
mentions my name and it gets into the papers that's fine. If it
doesn't it doesn't matter to me. I'm in it for the enjoyment."
That's another lesson he learned from his days as a wrestler.
"It goes back to my coaches, who were my mentors," he said.
"They said that if you're good at something you don't need to
talk about yourself. All you need to know is you are good at it.
The world doesn't have to know as long as you know." Cont. p11

Not that Caruso doesn't enjoy winning a race like the
Fourstardave or being the very best at whatever he does.
"We all want to be superlative in everything we try," he said.
"You can't. But we try. Winning is very enjoyable. And when you
win at the top level in racing it is very, very special because it is
rare. There are only so many Grade I races in the country. When
you win a Grade I race it lasts for days."
SAN CLEMENTE TOP THREE MEET EURO
PAIR IN DEL MAR OAKS
by Joe Bianca
The first three finishers from the local GII San Clemente S. will
reconvene in Saturday's GI Del Mar Oaks with a pair of Group
winners from Europe shipping in to spice things up in the
nine-furlong test for 3-year-old turf fillies.
Of the local hopes, San Clemente victress Laura's Light
(Constitution) figures to take the most play as she tries to make
it six wins in eight career outings. A debut winner sprinting on
the all-weather at Golden Gate last November, the bay was
privately purchased by Gary Barber out of that effort and
transferred to Peter Miller's barn. Runner-up at 24-1 in the GIII
Jimmy Durante S., she annexed the Blue Norther S. and GIII
Sweet Life S. over the winter at Santa Anita before fading to
fourth at odds-on in the Bourbonette Oaks Mar. 14 at Turfway.
Back on turf in the GIII Honeymoon S. going this distance May 30
in Arcadia, she tracked a runoff leader from second, overtook
that one in the stretch and held gamely late to prevail before
tracking a fast pace and triumphing by three-quarters of a length
last out.
Attempting to reel her in that day were Guitty (Fr) (Dunkerque
{Fr}) and Warren's Showtime (Clubhouse Ride). The former,
who won her first two American starts after shipping in from her
native lane, was off the board in four straight efforts before
completing the exacta at 19-1 in the San Clemente. The latter,
victress of the Surfer Girl S. and China Doll S. going a mile on the
Santa Anita lawn, added the California-bred Melair S. over dirt
before closing from last to finish 1 1/4 lengths behind Laura's
Light.
Miss Extra (Fr) (Masterstroke) took five tries to get off the
mark in her home country before doing so at 11-1 against males
May 11 at Longchamp. Repeating in the Prix de Lilas at Deauville
20 days later, the bay made it three in a row in the G2 Prix de
Sandringham June 19 at Chantilly before finding Group 1 waters
a bit too deep when ninth in the Prix de Diane Longines there
July 5.
The progressive Neige Blanche (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}) also makes
her Stateside bow. Graduating second out over the boys on
Marseille's synthetic surface last November, she repeated in an
allowance there Dec. 26 and was third two starts later in her
turf debut, the Prix Caravelle May 11 at Toulouse. Stepping into
Group company, she captured the G3 Prix Cleopatre at 10-1
going 1 3/8 miles over soft ground last out June 6 at Lyon-Parilly.

Unveiled going 5 1/2 furlongs May 25 at Santa Anita, the
homebred reeled in an odds-on Bob Baffert firster to triumph
going away before stretching out a furlong and scoring in similar
fashion over Baffert's re-opposing pair of Merneith (American

Alice Bamford and Michael Tabor's Harvest Moon (Uncle Mo)
will try to make it three in a row for Simon Callaghan. Third
when unveiled going a grassy mile June 12 at Santa Anita, the
bay moved to the dirt to graduate July 3 at Los Alamitos and
repeated sharply by 4 1/4 lengths in a track-and-trip optional
claimer July 27.
'TDN Rising Star' Aurelia Garland (Constitution) ships in for
trainer Rodolphe Brisset. A dominant first-out victress under the
tutelage of Wesley Ward last May, the chestnut was off a year
and two weeks before returning with a late-running third in a
Churchill optional claimer May 16. Filling the same slot at 4-5 in
her two-turn debut there June 11, she finished second last out in
the GIII Iowa Oaks July 5 at Prairie Meadows.
KEENELAND & FASIG CREDENTIALS
AVAILABLE VIA VIRTUAL BADGE APP Earlier this week, Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton released their
joint safety protocols for their upcoming September Sales, which
included a credential system for all attendees, including buyers.
All consignors and their staffs, vets and their staffs and media
are required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test 10
days prior to the start of the Sept. 9-10 Fasig-Tipton Sale.
Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton have partnered with a trusted
technology provider, Virtual Badge, to serve their digital
credential needs for both September sales. Both sales
companies will share a common credential, accessible from your
mobile device on the Virtual Badge app. In order to request a
credential, interested parties must complete the following steps:
1. Download the Virtual Badge app on your smartphone in
your App Store or Google Play. Create an account within the
app, log in and select AKeeneland@ or AFasig-Tipton@ under
Organization.
2. Complete the credential application. Select your role at the
sale and complete the questionnaire.
Buyers and their agents should complete the form and submit
your request. No other action is needed.
All other sales participants should indicate whether you will be
testing at Keeneland/Fasig-Tipton or off site. If testing at
Keeneland or Fasig-Tipton, your results will be linked to your
Virtual Badge account once a negative test is received. If testing
off site, upload a copy of your test result into the app.
3. Credential approved. You will receive notification within 48
hours after submitting your request and test results are
received. Your approved credential will appear in the Virtual
Badge app on your phone, which will be scanned at entry to the
sales ground each day.
An approved credential issued by Keeneland or Fasig-Tipton
will be valid for both sales, and therefore you will only need to
complete this process once. Please apply with the organization
that you will first enter within 10 days of your COVID-19 test.
The release also expanded on other sales protocols, such as
the policies in the back ring and barn areas.
! Barn Area
- The barn area is open to credentialed participants.
- Participants must wear a face covering and socially
distance at all times. Only consignors and their staff will
be permitted to enter barns and shedrows.
- Van drivers are not permitted to leave their vehicles,

VEKOMA LIKELY TO MISS FOREGO
By Mike Kane
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--Though he has recovered from a
leg issue that interrupted his training schedule, two-time Grade I
winner Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) looks to be a long shot to
compete in the GI Forego S. Aug. 29.
Trainer George Weaver said Friday said the 4-year-old colt,
co-owned by Randy Hill's R.A. Hill Stable and Gatsas Stables, was
"50-50" to make the seven-furlong Forego. Vekoma has been
treated for an abscess in the coronet band of his left front leg
and has not had a timed work since his 1 1/4-length victory in
the GI Met Mile July 4 at Belmont Park.
"It's not looking promising right now," Weaver said. "I need to
get a work in him, and it's a day-to-day thing. He has a little
abscess. We are just about ready to do something with him, but
it's a day-to-day decision."
Weaver said if Vekoma does not make the Forego, he would
likely be pointed toward the six-furlong GI Vosburgh S. Sept. 26
at Belmont Park. The Vosburgh is part of the Breeders' Cup
Challenge, "Win and You're In" series of races that guarantees a
fees-paid entry and travel expenses. Vekoma already has won
two Breeders' Cup Challenge races: the GI Carter S. for a berth
in the Sprint and the Met Mile for the Dirt Mile.
Weaver said that Vekoma, unbeaten in three starts this year
and a winner of six of eight in his career, has been going to the
track for his morning exercise.
"He has galloped the last few days," Weaver said. "He is
moving good now. The faster you go, the more it may aggravate
that tissue, so it's just a matter of me getting to the point where
I think he can put some speed work on it."
Though Vekoma was given the rest of the year off after the
2019 GI Kentucky Derby--where he was moved up to 12th from
13th by the DQ of Maximum Security (New Year=s Day)--Weaver
said the chestnut has not had many problems during his three
seasons of competition.

"He grabbed a quarter when he was 3-year-old," Weaver said.
"All horses have issues from time to time. We ask them to be
athletes and it's part of the game. He is a very, very good horse."
Hill praised Weaver and said that missing the Forego with
Vekoma--whom he expects will be the Eclipse Award-winning
sprinter-- was not a big deal. Funny Guy (Big Brown), a
Hill-Gatsas-Swick Stable horse trained by John Terranova, is a
probable for the Forego.
"I think that George has managed this horse perfectly," Hill
said. "Sometimes you get frustrated as an owner. I always let
the trainer do their job. If you look at the way that George has
handled this horse, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't
think any other trainer would have this horse where he is now."
Noting that Vekoma was a May foal, Hill said the decision to
put him away after the Derby made sense and has yielded a top
4-year-old.
"George gave him the time off to come back and be a big,
strong man," Hill said. "So if George thinks he needs a little more
timeY. I think if we don't make the Forego, George is talking
about the Vosburgh, which I kind of like, because it's six
furlongs. We can see how he reacts again at six furlongs. We
haven't seen him at six in a long time. Then we've got the choice
of six or the mile. I've got Funny Guy in the Forego. Of course,
my dream is that Funny Guy wins the (BC Dirt Mile) and Vekoma
wins the (BC Sprint) and I win two races."
Vekoma won the GII Blue Grass S. in 2019 and is no stranger to
two-turn races, but Hill sees him as more of a sprinter/miler-
type now and said it is unlikely he would go to the GI Breeders'
Cup Classic Nov. 7 at Keeneland.
"We do what we do best," he said. "I think we will be sprinterof the year. I think we are now. Everybody loves Volatile(Violence), but I can't wait to race against him. I think Vekomawill tie him in a knot. I do. I think he's a good horse. Don't get mewrong, he's a very nice horse, but I want to see when he comes
up against some good horses. You look at what Vekoma did inthe Met Mile. He was turning for home and five Grade I horsesswallowed him up and he just re-engaged. I haven't seenanything like that in a long time. I don't think anybody can beatus. I don't say that. I'm pretty realistic as an owner." All five of Funny Guy's victories have come against NewYork-bred company and Hill said the Forego will be a good testfor the 4-year-old colt. 'We'll see how he does," Hill said. "We've got to find out aboutthis horse. He's a New York-bred. Everybody says he hasn'tfaced anything yet. He's a New York-bred, let's go and look. Johnsaid 'let's see how good we are.' He's training great. He's gettingbetter and better."
PLETCHER=S DR POST TUNES UP FOR DERBY
Dr Post (Quality Road), who placed in both the GI Belmont S.and the GI TVG.com Haskell S. this summer, signaled hisreadiness for the GI Kentucky Derby Sept. 5 with a five-furlongmove in 1:00.75 at Saratoga Friday. With temperatures in themid-60s after the renovation break, Dr Post worked in companywith Money Moves (Candy Ride {Arg}) over the fast main trackfor trainer Todd Pletcher. "It was a good work for him today,@ said Pletcher of thecolorbearer for Vincent Viola's St. Elias Stable. AHe galloped outwell and I was very happy with what I saw out of him." Pletcher, who previously won the Derby in 2010 and 2017 withSuper Saver (Maria=s Mon) and Always Dreaming (Bodemeister),respectively, said this would be the penultimate work prior tothe Derby for Dr Post. The sophomore, who won the Apr. 25Unbridled S. at Gulfstream Park, is scheduled to work again nextFriday, Aug. 28, at the Spa before shipping to Kentucky.

DONNA VELOCE WORKS AHEAD OF KY OAKS
GSW Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) posted a six-furlong work at
Del Mar Friday afternoon in advance of an upcoming start in the
GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs Sept. 4. Campaigned by
Kaleem Shah, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick
Smith, the filly completed the task in 1:11.60, the fastest of
seven moves at the distance Friday. Commencing at the
five-furlong pole, she completed her first quarter in :25.00
followed by a half :47.80 before hitting the wire :59.80. She
galloped out seven eighths in 1:26.20.
An $800,000 2-year-old in training sale buy at the Fasig-Tipton
Florida sale in 2019, she realized $450,000 at Keeneland
September a year earlier. A first out winner at Santa Anita last
September, she closed out her juvenile campaign with seconds
in both the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies and GI Starlet S.
before resuming in 2020 with a victory in her most recent start
in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Mar. 8.
THE TALE OF ASHFORD STUD=S ELDER
STATESMAN By Katie Ritz
It will be exactly 23 years ago on Sunday, August 23, 1997.
Julie Krone vividly, and affectionately, recalls the day that she
and Tale of the Cat took the GII King=s Bishop S.
AWe had an inside post that day, and there were some great
sprinters,@ Krone recounted. AIt was a really tough field, but Tale
of the Cat literally had wings. He just came out of there and it
was like the faster we went, the more his ears came up and his
stride got longer and more relaxed. To feel him grab the ground
and be as fast as he was with the wind blowing by you, and then
to be able to put your hands on his neck and push and have him
go even faster yet, it was an amazing feeling.@
Krone rode the nimble son of Storm Cat to a 5 1/2-length
victory that day at Saratoga and was aboard in his eight other
career starts. Together, they ran in the money in all but one of
those races, including three Grade I=s.
ATale of the Cat was one of the most beautiful, put-together
sprinters I=ve ever ridden in my life,@ Krone said. AHe was such a
great horse and was so capable of that high cruising speed.@
She uses the term >mentally-strong= to describe his personality.
AEverything he did had to do with how his brain worked a little
faster,@ the Hall of Famer said. AHe was aggressive and so you
just had to plan ahead and know what you were going to do.@
She remembers working the colt through his first relaxed
breezes before his winning debut, insisting to trainer John
Forbes that the youngster was going to be something special.
AFrom the very first time he breezed to when he matured as
an older horse, he was always together,@ she recalled. AHe
always got his lead changes and was quick to learn how to break
out of the starting gate. All the things that make a sprinter a
great sprinter, he just came with those things.@
Now over two decades later as the elder statesman of Ashford
Stud, Tale of the Cat has greatly contributed to building the
fortress that is the American arm of Coolmore. With 19 crops on
the ground, he=s produced 1,146 winners to date, a figure
surpassed only slightly by fellow Coolmore sire Galileo (Ire), and
ranks him as the leading active sire in North America by
cumulative winners.
ATale of the Cat was one of the most impressive early stallions
that we ever had here,@ said Coolmore America=s Adrian
Wallace. AHe=s stood the test of time and has been a wonderful
servant to Ashford Stud. Horses like Tale of the Cat, he=s
responsible for this farm. He has built countless barns. He=s
furnished and bought countless mares. He=s a small enterprise in
himself.@
Tale of the Cat=s pedigree is infused with Coolmore-affiliated
blood, both old and new, with his grandsire Storm Bird the

AHe has a very illustrious family behind him,@ Wallace said of
his dam side.AIt=s a really current pedigree and it=s one of the
best, most iconic American pedigrees.@
Of the sire line, he added, AThe Storm Cat sire line is

we will keep looking to go back to. Tale of the Cat is very
emblematic of that.@
Since entering stud in 1999, he has sired seven Grade I
winners, headlined by Gio Ponti, who collected seven Grade I=s
in his own right, plus three Eclipse Awards, and is now a Grade I-
producing sire. Tale of the Cat=s leading daughter,
Stopcharingmaria, made waves on the New York circuit, taking
the GI Coaching Club American Oaks and GI Alabama S. at
Saratoga before winning the 2015 GI Breeders= Cup Distaff.
Two of his sons, Lion Heart and Tale of Ekati, were dual Grade I
winners and are now trying their hand as sires.
Both progeny come from mares from the Hail to Reason line,
with Lion Heart out of a Mr. Leader mare and Tale of Ekati out of
a mare by Halo=s best son Sunday Silence. Stopchargingmaria
also has a second dam by Kris S, who hails from the same line.
Despite the achievements with this family, Wallace said that
Tale of the Cat has found success with a wide variety of mares.
AOne of the great things about him was that he was very
versatile,@ he said. ABeing by Storm Cat and out of a Mr.
Prospector mare meant he suited a wide range of American
families. He had a huge amount of success when inbred to Mr.
Prospector. He worked very well with Unbridled=s Song, as well
as the Seattle Slew line.@
Tale of the Cat produced six stakes winners with mares by
Unbridled=s Song, including three Grade II winners in A Shin Top,
Appealing Tale and Alpha Kitten, as well as the Grade I-placed
Luminance. His Grade I winner Cat Moves is out of a mare by
Capote (Seattle Slew) and he sired two additional graded/group
winners out of Seattle Slew mares with Tale of a Champion and
Ilusora.
AHe got very good 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and older horses,@
Wallace said. AHe got runners on dirt, turf and synthetic
surfaces. So he=s a horse that really suited a wide range of
breeders.@
The 26-year-old stallion is still active at stud, although in his
twilight years of his career, having bred 32 mares last year and a
combined 138 in the three years prior.
AWe=re delighted to be talking about Tale of the Cat because
he=s one of the unsung heroes at this farm,@ Wallace said. AHe=s
a horse that=s been here longer than I=ve been here, having
arrived in 1999. He=s our elder statesman and we=re very proud
of him. His contribution to the Thoroughbred breed and to
Ashford Stud is immeasurable.@
PLANS IN PIPELINE FOR OWNERS &
SPECTATORS TO RETURN TO ARLINGTONBy T.D. Thornton
Arlington International Racecourse is awaiting decisions from
local and state health officials that would pave the way for
spectators to once again be allowed at the races under socially
distanced pandemic precautions.
The plan calls for a phased-in approach that would start with
horse owners being allowed back to the track, then ramping up
attendance to allow 2,000 people into the plant for live racing
on the day of the GI Kentucky Derby simulcast.
The Daily Herald of suburban Chicago first broke the story
Friday. Arlington has proposed hosting 500 to 800 spectators
(ages 18 and up) on other race days through the end of the
meet. Advance online registration would be required for
designated seating areas along the homestretch. Access to the
grandstand would only be permitted to bet and to use rest
rooms.

Arlington president Tony Petrillo told the Daily Herald that the
track initially was directed to submit spectator plans to the
Illinois Department of Agriculture but that management has
since been told to pursue approvals through the Village of
Arlington Heights, where the track is located. The village, in turn,
is working with the county and state.
"It's nice the way our facility is laid out. People are sitting in
pods, basically," Petrillo told the Daily Herald. "I think [by] the
beginning of next week we'll have some clarity."
FEDERAL COURT UPHOLDS ARIZONA SIMULCAST
SIGNAL EQUALITY LAWBy T.D. Thornton
A bid by The Stronach Group (TSG)'s simulcast signal brokerage
company to keep the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG)
from enforcing a law requiring companies that provide off-track-
betting signals to sell them to anyone in the state who wants to
buy them got stymied by a federal appeals court ruling Aug. 20.
A three-judge panel for the Ninth Circuit United States Court of
Appeals affirmed an earlier district court's denial of a
preliminary injunction in a lawsuit challenging whether a
relatively new state statute or the federal Interstate Horseracing
Act of 1978 (IHA) should take precedence in the dispute
between TSG-owned Monarch Content Management, LLC, and
the ADG.
According to Capitol Media Services in Arizona, the basis for
the case dates to 2018, when the newly reopened Arizona
Downs sought access to Monarch's menu of simulcasts, which
include TSG tracks and other popular winter signals like Tampa
Bay Downs. Monarch initially agreed to send its signals to the
track itself but refused to do business with the Arizona Downs
OTB sites, presumably because three of them (at that time)
were in the Phoenix area, where they would compete with OTBs
controlled by Turf Paradise.
Capitol Media Services reported that last year lawmakers
"voted to force Monarch into that all-or-nothing situation: If it
wants to do business with Turf Paradise, the law reads, it has to
provide the same signals to anyone else who wants it." It also
gave the state racing commission the authority to review
simulcast contracts to determine whether fees are "excessive or
unreasonable'' or the terms are "anti-competitive or deceptive."
Monarch and co-plaintiff Laurel Park then sued to block that
law.
According to the court opinion authored by Judge Andrew
Hurwitz, the panel held that the plaintiffs, "had not shown a
likelihood of success on the merits of their claims. The panel first
held that that the IHA, pertaining to interstate horse race
wagering at off-track sites, did not preempt [the state law]. The
panel determined that on their faces, the IHA and the Arizona
statute regulated different actors and activities. The IHA did not
address how the states can regulate simulcasts, and the Arizona
statute did not address Laurel Park's statutory right to consent
before interstate wagering on its races could be conducted.
Thus, it was not facially impossible to comply with both laws.
The panel further rejected plaintiffs' argument that [the state
law] frustrates the intent of the IHA."
The judgment continued: "The panel assumed arguendo that
Monarch's simulcasts were expressive in certain respects. The
panel held, however, that the Arizona statute did not regulate
that expressive content, but rather only Monarch's conduct-the
"offer" to sell simulcasts to live-racing permittees and OTB sites.
The statute's requirement that Monarch must make simulcasts
available on equal terms was plainly incidental to the statute's
focus on Monarch's non-First Amendment business practices."
Tom Auther, an Arizona Downs owner, told Capitol Media
Services that he is treating the ruling as a victory. But the
judgment won't automatically give his track or OTB network
access to the Monarch-brokered signals, because Monarch
chose back in January to cease selling any signals to Arizona
entities.
Both Arizona Downs and Turf Paradise have called off their
2020 race meets because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sneaking Out ran to the money with her second straight
graded success in the Rancho Bernardo. Heavily favored in this
event, the bay was two-wide in a tussle for control through a
:22.35 opening quarter. Muscling her way to the lead as the half
went in :45.35, she had Amuse hanging on beside her as she
turned for home, but Sneaking Out shook off that foe in the
lane, charging clear to a decisive victory.
Starting her career with Hollendorfer, Sneaking Out made two
starts for Keith Desormeaux last summer and was shelved after
finishing off the board in the GIII Torrey Pines S. at this venue.
Sent back to Hollendorfer, she won an allowance at Oaklawn
Apr. 25 and was fifth in the GIII Winning Colors S. at Churchill
May 30. The Cal-bred was last seen winning the GII Great Lady
M S. at Los Alamitos July 4.
Pedigree Notes:

KEEP STATEMENT SUPPORTS KHRC PROPOSED
DRUG REGULATIONS The Kentucky Equine Education Project has released a
statement in support of regulations proposed by the Kentucky
Horse Racing Commission to phase out Lasix, limit the use of
bisphosphonates and align the state=s drug withdrawal
schedules to RMTC standard.
The full statement follows:
AAs the Kentucky Legislature's Interim Joint Committee on
Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations makes
their final review of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's
(KHRC) proposed regulations for the gradual phasing out of the
use of Lasix, restrictions on the off-label use of bisphosphonates,
and aligning withdrawal schedule to RMTC standard, the
Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) and its board of
directors strongly urge legislators to support these regulations.
KEEP has been at the forefront in advocating for new
regulations that ensure the health and safety of horses and
jockeys, as well as protecting the future of the sport. In April of
2019, KEEP's board issued a statement in support of banning
Lasix, in addition to other suggested industry reforms. In
December of 2019, KEEP's board voted to support the
regulations that legislators are now reviewing.
Kentucky's horse industry finds itself at a crossroads. Thanks to
the success of historical horse racing and a strengthened racing
circuit in the state, the industry has seen growth across the
Commonwealth and now leads all other states in nearly every
metric. During the pandemic, horse racing nationally has seen
an increase in interest and viewership with the resumption of
racing. However, the industry has also seen strong, organized
opposition in association with an increase in public awareness
and attention to health and safety issues over the last few years.
It is important to implement these regulations now, while
committing the KHRC, legislators and the industry to ongoing
and data-driven re-assessments once they are in practice and
their impact can be evaluated. The KHRC can propose updates
to the regulations in order to achieve their overarching goals, if
needed.
In order to secure the future of the industry and its more than
$3.4-billion economic impact on the state, it is vital that the
KHRC's carefully considered proposed regulations be supported
by the Kentucky Legislature.@
KEEP is a not-for-profit grassroots organization created in 2004

He and stablemate Fauci (Malibu Moon) appeared to have this
compact field at their mercy, and the public got it right in
installing Golden Pal as the 2-5 chalk. Blasting out of his outside
stall to immediately clear off, the Randall Lowe homebred doled
out splits of :21.99 and :44.37 with Fauci in closest pursuit. The
race already appeared won as they straightened for home, and
Irad Ortiz, Jr. just gave Golden Pal a couple of shoulder taps as
he cruised home well clear of Fauci while stopping the timer in a
sharp 1:00.88.
"He's something special, this guy. I think we just got a little
peek at it,@ trainer Wesley Ward said of the winner. AFrom
everything we've seen here, they're coming into his home court
like Michael Jordan in the United Center in the Breeders' Cup
this year. He's a very, very nice colt. I'm very thankful for the
owner [Randy Lowe]. He's afforded me the time that myself and
my team has needed, and this horse had some issues and my
team has really worked hard on this guy. He's so fast and he's so
gifted. To get him to this point is special."
Ward indicated that Golden Pal would most likely train up to
the GII Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, to be held at
Keeneland Nov. 6.
Golden Pal is the first foal to race out of brilliant 13-time
