Sports Report July 2019 – Mr R Demain-Griffiths, Director of Sport
The summer term is traditionally thought of as a bit of a wind down as we move into the summer holidays. I
can safely say that has very much not been the case this year with some exciting developments in store for
the next academic year and of course, our Multi Sports Tour to Japan.
As you will have seen, we have changed our team kit supplier to eco brand Tsunami; this has led to the
opportunity of redesigning kit and also sourcing supporters for the forthcoming year. I am very pleased and
thankful to the various supporters who have come forward, allowing us to replace our old team kits. The
most touching is probably from a consortium of Wordsworthians who clubbed together to fund next seasons
1st V basketball kit, as a thank you I was able to put all their names in the shirt numbers.

As well as supporters I have been working to increase the opportunities for our boys inside and out of
school. Our relationship with Paul Chaplin Squash continues to grow as we now offer coaching in Years 10
& 11 and for next year also the Sixth Form. Chafyn Grove kindly allowed us to use their courts for an inter-
school competition as well, won by Henry Harrington.
Continuing to develop our links with local business and ensure our boys can continue their training over the
holidays, I also sent details out (also in the rugby fixture card) regarding a discounted gym membership at
myGym in the centre of Salisbury. Following the programmes developed by Wordsworthian Angus Hogg
the boys have got plenty to be carrying on with over the holidays and myGym have provided the boys with
an economical way of doing so.
Our support has not just come from home, but also the other side of the world as our friends in Australia,
Merewether High, sent through an Aussie Rules kit for us to continue to develop our University Games idea
from Year 10 upwards. With the addition of an Aussie Rules player to the staff next year I am sure this will
be a hit with our boys as an option beyond our traditional sports.
Finally I am excited to announce that from September our Saturday medical cover will be provided by Alex
Beck, a Sports Trauma Physiotherapist who has worked with us previously at Rosslyn Park as well as with
Bath, Salisbury and Fordingbridge Rugby Clubs. She will also provide us with an open clinic on Mondays
after school for anyone with a suspected concussion (in or out of school) and for those who contribute to
sporting subs this will also extend to treatment for other injuries. This is in a bid to ensure we are keeping
everyone in best shape and we as a school are able to monitor and track boys as they return to play and
learning.
With concussion in mind (excuse the pun) as parents, it would be appreciated and advised that you follow
the below link. The RFU have taken a lead on concussion, but it is something that does not only happen in
rugby, and statistically the next most prevalent situation is off the sports field in general play during lunch
and break times. It is important all parties involved with our boys are as informed as possible with regard to
their recovery and return to play and learning.

Athletics
One of our traditional sports and one of our best. For the second year running we had a team through to
the Schools Cup National Final, this year in Chelmsford, where they placed 9th with 14 personal bests. This
was following an epic display at Regionals where they topped a strong field and were well off the pace at
the half way stage. However, they rallied in the afternoon and with some strong personal best
performances came through. The inter boys also put in a heroic display with some outstanding displays,
none more so than Jed McGrath who stepped up in the 800m for a PB run, but they were unfortunately
pipped by an outstanding Millfield.
The Schools Cup team event is just one event in our athletics calendar with all age groups winning their
Area Sports competition and numerous boys then going on to represent Salisbury and later Wiltshire at
Regionals as an individual. Our youngsters also competed in the School Games Super 8 competition where
they finished first.
Sports Day this year took on a different form as we moved back to Britford and changed the format so it is
scored the same as the Schools Cup competition. Mr Hole has had an extremely busy final couple of
weeks getting ready for it made harder still by getting injured himself (a common theme amongst BWS staff
this term). That said the three days’ worth of events ran like clockwork and with more boys involved then
ever, was a huge success and the new format (not three days again) is one we’ll look to use again next
year. Thank you Mr Hole for putting it together and all the staff and boys that made it possible. Thank you
also to Salisbury Athletics Club for lending us various items to make it safe and ultimately possible.
Finally you may have seen on Twitter, two of our Wordsworthians competed against each other in The
Varsity athletics with Jack Paget in Oxford Blue and Toby Twentyman in Cambridge Blue. The Oxford man
took it after a hard fought competition.
Cricket
A sport we are trying to find our way in. Without a venue or outdoor nets, but lots of keen cricketers it is
proving an exciting Summer project. Salisbury Cathedral School have kindly allowed us to use their nets
this term and with support from Arlington Energy I hope to employ a coach for next season to help
alongside Milo Kantolinna who will be our Sports Assistant next year.
This season however we have made good progress that we hope to build on with a few more friendly
fixtures with the local preps following a successful and exciting match against Stroud with the U13s who
came 3rd in the county in an 8-aside competition and made the semi-final of their Wiltshire Cricket T20 as
did the U15 side who also made the semi-finals of their Inspiresport One Day Cup U14 semi, losing after a
gritty performance to a well organised Dauntsey’s. The U15 beat Warminster in their ESCA T20, but then
fell to an outstanding Marlborough in the semi-final.
With limited resources compared to some of our rivals, but a keenness amongst the boys and support as
shown above, I have no doubt we will in time break the semi-final ceiling that has thwarted us this year,
especially with some of the combined talent we already have within the school playing at district at county
level.
Rugby 7s
Not traditionally the 7s term, but an opportunity for some Y13s to have one last run out and also an
opportunity for a potential 1st VII for next season to come together. The Mad Dog 7s, organised by
Wordsworthian Tom Boxer was a great competition and opportunity on two counts. The 3rd VII ran out
eventual Plate Winners after a golden try win in their final with a never say die attitude and smiles on their
faces. It was participation sport played as it should be with the utmost fun, and we happened to win the
plate. The U17 1st VII were set the challenge of running the whole day themselves without any input from
me and they succeeded in fine fashion, taking all warm ups, team talks, substitutions and game reviews
themselves. They won the cup and showed once more the future is bright.
In the 15 aside version of the game James Kennedy represented South West U20s, while numerous boys
represented their county and academies and the news finally came through that Xav Hastings signed
professional terms with Bath. We look forward to seeing him in action in the blue, black and white next
season.
This term has also seen us lucky enough to host both a rugby referee course which a number of boys from
Year 10 to Year 12 completed and also the School of Kicking who ran a workshop for 32 boys on a rather
wet Friday.
Table Tennis
The biggest growing sport in the school! Thank you to the BWSPA for their support in purchasing the
numerous tables around the site. The team played at the School Games finals with high hopes after placing
3rd last year. They went one further this year placing second with some outstanding performances, and
hope to go one better next year.
Tennis
Both the Y8 and Y10 tennis teams have aced their respective Schools Tennis groups and look forward to a
knock out round in the Autumn on the road to regionals. The competition also allowed us to put out B teams
against our opponents at both Warminster and Dauntsey’s meaning twice as many boys played for the
school this year compared to previous. The Y8 non-club team made the School Games finals as well as
Hamish Goulding in the elite competition where they were first and second respectively.
Our Road to Wimbledon draw saw 150 boys enter and after a day of tennis. Guy Mitchell came out on top
for the second year running. He played in the county final along with Hamish Goulding and Rory Sherriff.
Hamish made the final, but just lost out.
Ten Tors
Huge congratulations to our Y10 boys who completed the Ten Tors, placing 1st in their group of 17.
Awesome effort. Thanks to Jess and Adam Bate for taking the lead.
Tour – Japan 2019
I write this with a couple of weeks until we depart for what will be the trip of a lifetime. Attached is a
programme with the tour details in and I just wanted to say thank you again to our main sponsors Clarify
and Johnson Valves who have kitted the boys out in the Tsunami kit. We are very grateful to all our
supporters and I have no doubt all involved will have the most amazing time.
As another academic year comes to a close, may I thank everyone for their support and also wish you all a
great summer, as always with one eye on September. Stay active, be inspired by the various men’s and
women’s events on around the world this year and most of all enjoy yourselves. I look forward to hitting the
ground running in pre-season at the end of August ready for another busy term of sport.

WISHING ALL THE PLAYERS & SUPPORT STAFF THE VERY BEST FOR AN AMAZING TOUR
// HELPING TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES CHANGE THE GAME AND GROW
clarifybd.com When I speak to groups of people in Salisbury and further afield to tell them about Bishop’s, I always emphasise that this school is fairly unique. One of the things that creates that very special nature is the opportunity that our boys have to do things that are beyond the scope of ‘normal’ schooling, and many of the these activities are extra-curricular. Lessons for life do not necessarily happen within the con-fines of a classroom; they are often elsewhere, in a perfor-mance venue, in the open air, in competition or in collabora-tion. The 2019 Japan Multi-Sports Tour combines all of that into one as the boys head East to Asia and a world that is very different to their own. Huge contrasts await them – in language, culture, geography and the very fabric of society. We all learn so much when we are placed firmly outside our comfort zone and compelled to adapt to an environment which is completely new. That is what lies in store for boys and staff, and there is then the excitement of team sports to add spice to an already fascinating itinerary. Good luck boys. Memories are built from experiences like this one. I am sure that you will all have a fantastic time, and I look forward to hearing tales of adventure upon your re-turn.Stuart SmallwoodHeadmaster

日本ツアー
A Note From Mr D-G:The Olympics and Rugby World Cup are soon to be played out in Japan, but first BWS visit with their multi sports tour. When con-sidering locations for our 2019 tour, there was only really one to consider, with a country so rich in heritage, but also so modern and in the throes of preparing for two global sporting events.I personally have never been to Japan, I guess that is partly why we tour, to explore new places and cultures. To take ourselves out of our comfort zone and test ourselves somewhere com-pletely foreign. Japan will certainly be that, from the lack of knives and forks, to communal bathing and bowing, potentially the only thing ‘normal’ to our tourists will be queuing, the Japa-nese are as proficient as the British apparently. When discussing sport and international sides, particularly rugby, but the same for football, I often consider us a little like Japan. We’re typically smaller than our opponents, often not as well-resourced and as a result have to find a different way to play and on occasion against the real heavy weights the stars align and we can pull off a shock, akin to Japan against South Af-rica at the last Rugby World Cup, or in 2002 when they finished 9th at the Football World Cup. On a basketball footing Japan head to the Basketball World Cup this year, something GB will not be a part of.The first tour I organised was to Italy in 2011, we have since visited Australia twice as well as Argentina and Brazil. In that time we have made many memories and friends abroad. I have no doubt Japan 2019 will be the same. The sport is one compo-nent, and it is going to be tough, but if I have learnt anything it is that a tour is far more about what goes on off the sports field than on it. Thank you to our two main supporters Clarify and Johnson Valves as well as everyone else who has helped support the tour and make it happen. It will be a special time, one that will be talked and laughed about for years to come.

A Note From Richard Hill:I enjoyed the opportunity to develop my understanding of playing rugby under the guidance of many enthusiastic coaches, led by Mr Ralph-Bowman. The teams I played in were extremely competitive and were always looking to improve. The team worked hard in condition-ing as well as playing, which was rewarded with good performances, many happy memories. The Daily Mail Cup experience, in reaching the final was something that will be remembered by all those that were involved.
Where you are off to, Japan, gave me one of the most extreme con-ditions of my playing career. A preseason trip in 2002, to which we played Suntory (coached by Eddie Jones) in sweltering heat and humid-ity. We got off to a flyer scoring about a point a minute up to the 25 minute point. At half time I felt compelled to cool down with my top off and a bag ice applied to my head, while streams of sweat poured off. The conditions halted our progress and we found ourselves behind 5 minutes after half time such was the decline. Fortunately, we were able to regather focus and find a way to win but certainly a challenge. It was not only a great experience/challenge to not only test ourselves under fatigue in extreme weather conditions but to play against a team that played the game at a fast pace, looking for low dynamic rucks for quick ball away to the backs.

Bishop Wordsworth’s School is proud to be supplied by Tsunami Sportswear for the Japan 2019 Tour.
From 2019/20 our teams will be wearing Tsunamis eco fit range as part of their ethical eco business.
A Note From Rob Keith:I would like to wish both the players and coaches of Bishop Wordsworth’s School all the best for their summer tour of Japan.
I was fortunate enough to have gained my first experiences of rugby tours whilst at BWS when we travelled to Italy in 2011 and also played and hosted a Canadian touring side in 2012. Since my first experiences of touring, I have more recently traveled to both Japan and Korea in order to represent Hong Kong in the Asia Rugby Championship, narrowly missing out on 2019 World Cup qualification.
Both my experiences with BWS and Hong Kong have played an integral role in my development as a player and I’m sure the boys will reap the rewards of playing rugby across two different continents this summer. Being able to experience what rugby is like in terms of style and conditions the other side of the world will prove invaluable to their improvement both as individuals and a squad.
I recall undertaking ‘spotters’ in a Tokyo park last spring like we did in an Ital-ian car park (with a water bottle) in 2011 and overcoming a severe language barrier with one of the Italian referees. I’m sure this year’s squad will find as equally innovative ways to tackle the challenges touring provides.
Whether this is the boys first or last tour, it will provide amazing memories and stories from both on and off the field to discuss in years to come, like I still do with those that were on the Italy 2011 tour. This tour provides an ideal platform to begin the season and build upon the great success of the last.

My best experience playing for school was in Year 10 when we beat Wey Valley School in the last game of the regional pool to make it to the last 32 of the national cup. We needed to beat them by 17 away in order to qualify. In the past we had played them a few times and always lost. We played some awesome team basketball and ended up winning by 21. I continued playing after school because that was the natural progression. One of the main reasons I applied to Durham was because of the amazing basketball set up they had there. After playing for Reading Rockets Academy at junior level I was relishing playing senior basketball at university. I guess I could add that I will always be grateful of the whole P.E staff at Bishop’s who enabled me to get into basketball, and then created an environment where facilities were always open for me to use. I was able to train the same hours as my Reading teammates who were in an academy setup thanks to the P.E department.

A Note From Tom Woods:
I was at Bishops the year the sports hall opened (and it had spring loaded rims), which makes me feel quite old. My best memory about playing for the school was always competing against Wyvern. Those games stood out to me because there was a deep rivalry… although we always beat them by at least 50. After leaving Bishops I attended Itchen College in Southampton before them go to high school in Columbus, Ohio. Following that I came back to the UK, midway through the sea-son though I got my first professional contract in Italy for Italian side Altamura and spent the following 4 years on contracts there. Italy is a completely different experience and there are small adjustments that take weeks of practicing to get out of bad habits. For instance you can’t move your feet until the ball has touched the floor or you get called for a travel. Where as in the UK you can move the moment the ball leaves your hand. But perhaps the most obvious challenge being an enormous language barrier which was difficult to overcome at 19 but I am so glad I did. The reason I continued to play after leaving school was because I played out of school England U16 and U18. I knew I wanted to play professionally.

A Note From Monty George:
My best experience playing for BWS XI was the first game I played for the XI. I was in year 11 at the time and playing up, it was the final of the county cup and we weren’t the favourites to win. I made some crucial saves and we ended up winning by a goal, it was great to have a hand in the win. We then went on to win the cup the next two sea-sons.
I have played abroad a few times, but the best were with England U18 schoolboys. It definitely makes you see your team mates in a different light and a worth while bonding experience. It can make defeats worse though, especially when the stakes are high. The last time I played abroad was in Ireland against their U18 schoolboy side, it was the final game we needed a win or draw to top the table. We unfortunately lost the game 1-0 and I was at fault for the goal. It was a long flight back knowing I had let the team down.
I continued playing football after school because I was still hungry to improve myself and wanted to see how far I could go. Unfortunately due to business commitments I had to stop playing not long after, but I often wonder how far I could have gone if I had carried on playing, (but having said that you can’t do everything).
A Note From Drew Bridge:
Football at Bishops grew a lot in my time from 2007-2014. Year 7 began with a team consisting of rugby players who’d kicked a ball before. It ended playing for a team of football players, with a football coach in a brand new football kit. Despite the differences, the team was always successful, but it wasn’t until my final year that this success peaked. In 2014, we won Wiltshire league and cup double and had a decent run in the national cup which earned us a fair few trips to Nando’s with Mr. Lloyd!
Upon leaving BWS, I attended Loughborough University and made over 100 appearances for their first XI. This gave me the opportunity to receive a scholarship to play football (unfortunately now soccer) and study for an MBA in Tennessee. It has been fantastic, the team trains 6 days per week, with two games per week against universities across the nation. It can be described as a soccer players lifestyle (without the ridiculous wages) in glorious sunshine with the opportunity to travel around the US. It is definitely not to be turned down. I have also cre-ated an online soccer coaching community to help prepare players for college soccer in the USA, called College Soccer Ready!
