Exercise and Eating DisordersAn Ethical and Legal Analysis

Simona Giordano, University of Manchester, UK

Series: Ethics and Sport

Eating disorders (EDs) have become a social epidemic in thedeveloped world. This book addresses the close links betweenEDs and exercise, helping us to understand why the ‘typical’person with an ED exercises to excessive, often harmful, levels. This is also the first book to examine this issue from anethical and legal perspective, identifying the rights andresponsibilities of people with EDs, their families, and thefitness professionals and clinicians that work with them.

The book offers an accessible introduction to EDs and closelyexamines the concept of addiction. Drawing on a widerange of medical, psychological, physiological, sociologicaland philosophical sources, the book examines the benefitsand risks of exercise for the ED population, explores the linksbetween EDs and other abuses of the body in the sportsenvironment, and addresses the issue of athletes withdisordered eating behaviour. Importantly, the book alsosurveys current legislation and professional codes of conductthat guide the work of fitness professionals and clinicians inthis area, and presents a clear and thorough set of casehistories and action points to help professionals betterunderstand, and care for, their clients with EDs.

Exercise and Eating Disorders is important reading forstudents of applied ethics, medical ethics, and the ethics ofsport, as well as for fitness professionals, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, sports coaches, and sport and exercisescientists looking to better understand this important issue.

Exercise DependenceJohn H. Kerr, Kokushikan University, Japan, Koenraad J. Lindner and Michelle Blaydon

Exercise dependence or addictionhas been described as a ’positiveaddiction’, but it can have links withdamaging dysfunctional andexcessive behaviours, includingeating disorders. Clinical and sportpsychologists now acknowledge thecondition and report that it can befound in recreational exercisers andcompetitive athletes.

This is the first text to provide acomprehensive guide to exercisedependence. The text contains case

studies and reviews research into exercise dependence inboth ’exercise’ and ’sports’ contexts. The authors examinethe condition in the widest sense, exploring different typesof exercise dependence, risk factors associated with thecondition, the experiences and motivational characteristics ofsufferers, links with eating disorders, and a number ofapproaches to counselling.

This text will be of significant interest to psychologistsworking in sport, health and clinical practice, as well as toathletes and sports coaches, particularly those involved inendurance sports associated with higher incidences ofexercise dependence.

Mental ToughnessThe Mindset Behind Sporting Achievement

Michael Sheard, York St. John College, University of Leeds, UK

Mental toughness is one of the most ubiquitous terms usedin sport - by athletes, coaches, owners, and spectators, andalso by the print and broadcast media - however, it is alsoone of the least understood terms. Mental Toughness: TheMindset Behind Sporting Achievement provides a definitiveand readable overview of the area, and takes the reader tothe frontiers of mental toughness research.

The book introduces the historical conceptual argumentsbehind mental toughness research, and looks at thecharacteristics and development of mentally tough sportperformers. It suggests that mental toughness is apersonality style and mindset, presenting a case for itsinclusion within the positive psychological paradigm. Thebook also explores various measures of mental toughnessand their psychometric properties, and considers cultural andnational perspectives as well as the possibility of mentaltoughness heredity. Sheard exposes the development andmaintenance of mental toughness as a factor for successfulsport and life performance, and discusses the possibilities forfuture research on the subject.

This book is unique in considering the idea of mentaltoughness as an ’achievement mindset’ and is an invaluableresource for sport and exercise psychology and sciencestudents and lecturers. It also provides an importantreference for sport participants, coaches, and enthusiasts.

Sport, Technology and the BodyThe Nature of Performance

Tara Magdalinski, University College Dublin, Ireland

What is the nature of athleticperformance? This book offers ananswer to this fascinating questionby considering the relationshipbetween sport, technology and thebody. Specifically, it examines culturalresistance to the enhancement ofathletes and explores the ways inwhich performance technologiescomplicate and confound ourconception of the sporting body.

The book addresses concerns aboutthe technological ’invasion’ of the

’natural’ body to investigate expectations that athleticperformances reflect nothing more than the actual capacityof the untainted athlete. By examining a series of casestudies, including Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, Fastskinswimsuits, hypoxic chambers and an array of illicitsubstances and methods, the book distinguishes betweeninternal and external technologies to highlight the ways thatperformance enhancement, and public reaction to it, can beread.

Sport, Technology and the Body offers a powerful challengeto conventional views of athletic performance that standauthenticity against artifice, integrity against corruption, andathletic purity against technological intrusion. It is essentialreading for all serious students of the sociology, culture orethics of sport.

WINNER OF THE 2007 LORD ABERDARE LITERARY PRIZE

A History of Drug Use in Sport: 1876–1976Beyond Good and Evil

Paul Dimeo, University of Stirling, UK

This book offers a new history ofdrug use in sport. It argues that theidea of taking drugs to enhanceperformance has not always beenthe crisis or ‘evil’ we now think it is.Instead, the late nineteenth centurywas a time of some experimentationand innovation largely unhindered bytalk of cheating or health risks. Bythe interwar period, experiments hadbeen modernised in the newlaboratories of exercise physiologists.Still there was very little sense that

this was contrary to the ethics or spirit of sport. Sports, drugs and science were closely linked for over half a century.

The Second World War provided the impetus for bothincreased use of drugs and the emergence of an anti-dopingresponse. By the end of the 1950s a new framework ofethics was being imposed on the drugs question thatconstructed doping in highly emotive terms as an ‘evil’.Alongside this emerged the science and proceduralbureaucracy of testing. The years up to 1976 laid thefoundations for four decades of anti-doping. This bookoffers a detailed and critical understanding of who wasinvolved, what they were trying to achieve, why they setabout this task and the context in which they worked. Bydoing so, it reconsiders the classic dichotomy of ‘good anti-doping’ up against ‘evil doping’.

The Masters AthleteUnderstanding the Role of Sport and Exercise in Optimizing Aging

Edited by Joseph Baker, Sean Horton, and Patricia Weir

Masters athletes are those that continue to train and compete, typically at a high level, beyond the age of 35 and into middle and old age. As populations in the industrialised world get older and governments become increasingly keen to promote healthy aging and non-pharmacological interventions, the study of mastersathletes enables us to better understand the benefits of, andmotivations for, life-long involvement in physical activity. This is thefirst book to draw together current research on masters athletes.

The book examines the evidence that cognitive skills, motor skills and physiological capabilities can be maintained at a high level withadvancing age, and that age related decline is slowed in athletes thatcontinue to train and compete in their later years. Includingcontributions from leading international experts in physiology, motorbehaviour, psychology, gerontology and medicine, the book exploreskey issues such as:

• motivation for involvement in sport and physical activity across the lifespan

• evidence of lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes

• the maintenance of performance with age

Challenging conventional views of old age, and with important implications for policy and future research, this

book is essential reading for students and practitioners working in sport and exercise science, aging andpublic health, human development, and related disciplines.
