Bahrain National Days marked at UN New York

On the occasion of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national celebrations on

16 and 17 December, in com-memoration of the establish-ment of the modern Bahraini state as an Arab and Muslim country founded by Ahmed Al Fateh in 1783, the 48th anni-versary of its full membership in the United Nations, and the 20th anniversary of His Majes-ty the King’s Accession to the Throne, the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations held a re-ception, on December 12, at the United Nations Headquarters here.

The Permanent Representa-tive of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, Ambas-sador Jamal Faris Al Alrowaiei, alongside his wife and members of the Permanent Mission, re-ceived the attendees celebrating this special national occasion.

During his remarks on this occasion, the Permanent Rep-resentative highlighted how our celebrations this year also coincide with many significant occasions, as the Kingdom cel-ebrated this year the 100th an-niversary of the start of formal education, noting in this regard the selection of “Bahraini wom-en in the field of higher edu-cation and future sciences” as

a theme to celebrate Bahraini Women’s Day this year, which is celebrated annually on De-cember 1st.

The Permanent Representa-tive added that since the early 1930s, Bahraini women partic-ipated on an equal basis with men in municipal council elec-tions, and women today hold 55% of supervisory positions in Bahrain, expressing Bah-rain’s pride in the outstanding achievements of women.

The Permanent Representa-tive also noted that the Kingdom of Bahrain, as an Arab Muslim country known for its religious and cultural heritage, was the first to embrace churches, ca-thedrals, Hindu temples and

Jewish temples in the region, which were built since early 1900 and making it available for everyone to practice their religious rites freely.

He a commended the Bahrain National Football Team after its victory in the Gulf Cup, affirm-ing that the Kingdom of Bahrain is already witnessing a year of abundant achievements, led by His Majesty the King.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials of the United Nations, ambassadors, delegates of permanent missions to the United Nations, and a number of Bahraini citizens, in addition to a number of invitees from various organs of the interna-tional organisation.

Meanwhile, experts stressed the importance of selecting ex-perienced doctors and national or international accredited med-ical centres in conducting plastic surgeries, specially postpartum or after weight loss, and sleeve gastrostomy.

Moreover, dermatologists confirmed physical exams, tests,

and family history are crucial before making a diagnosis for hair treatments and hair trans-plant surgery for both men and women.

Dermatologists recommended using sunscreen, which blocks sun’s UVB rays to decrease risks of skin cancers and prevent pre-mature skin ageing caused by the sun.

Head of conference scientific committee Dr Hussain Jumaa confirmed that skincare spe-

cialists and experts discussed a number of topics related to skin health under various ses-sions such as ‘laser, fractional laser, Botox, skin ageing, hair disorders, Psoriasis, lupus ery-thematous, and Vitiligo as well as non-surgery  treatments.

In this regard, Dr Jumaa also highlighted that conference discussed the importance of using modern treatment for skin diseases, in addition to the uses of biological treatment in

severe cases of psoriasis associ-ated with arthritis.

Dr Jumaa also emphasised the need to provide psychological and family support to Vitiligo patients and raise awareness of this disease.

Head of Organising Commit-tee, Dr Ahmed Shahda stressed that in order to stay relevant, skin specialists and practitioners should Integrate and cooper-ate locally and regionally with the GCC and Arab countries to

achieve the best results and in complete safety.

He also highlighted that holding specialised educational workshops is crucial for devel-oping plastic medicine and sur-gery in the region.

Dr Shahda further stressed the importance of conference recommendations, noting that conference organisers will co-operate with all partners and stakeholders to put those recom-mendations into practice.

Bahrain Embassy in London hosts event on UK general elections

London

The Embassy of the King-dom of Bahrain to the United Kingdom held an

event on the occasion of the UK Parliamentary general elections to follow up, discuss and analyse the results.

The preliminary polls indicat-ed at that time that the Conserv-ative party had won a majority to form the British government, headed by British Prime Min-ister Boris Johnson, by a huge difference that was the largest since 1987.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of the King-dom of Saudi Arabia, His Roy-al Highness Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, the Ambassador of the State of Pal-estine, Hossam Zamrout, and the Ambassador of the League of Arab States in London, Ibra-him Mohiuddin, in addition to a large number of Arab and Brit-ish diplomats and journalists, and academics.

During the course of the dis-cussion, a number of interac-tive discussions were held with experts, journalists, ministers and former representatives in

Britain, where Lord Francis Maude who previously served as a former Conservative Chairman, served for twen-ty-five years in the House of Commons, delivered a pres-entation and analysis of his expectations regarding the for-mation of the next government and the most central decisions that may be made during the coming period, in addition to an explanation of British foreign relations, especially with Arab countries in terms of greater openness to the econo-my and foreign trade with the near implementation of exit procedures from the European Union (Brexit).

He also mentioned that this success achieved by the Con-servative Party through Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be a strong motivation for con-ducting talks with the Euro-pean Union in a more positive way after eliminating the state of the suspended parliament, which was suffering from Brit-ish parliamentary life during the years, especially since the 2017 elections.A session in progress at the event.

Divers search for remaining bodies from New Zealand volcanic eruption• The number killed rose to 17 with another fatality confirmed yesterday

• Doctors initially estimated they would need to import 1.2 million square centimetres of skin for grafts

AFP | Wellington

Divers searched seas around New Zealand’s volatile

White Island Saturday for two people still missing five days after the volcano erupted, as the death toll rose to 17.

Police deputy commissioner John Tims said the divers faced “unique and challenging condi-tions” as they searched waters “with between zero and two metres visibility”.

They were focusing on an area where a body was seen floating in the water earlier in the week.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ard-ern, meanwhile, has called for a minute’s silence to be observed at 2.11pm (0111 GMT) on Monday in honour of the victims of the eruption.

“Together we can express our

sorrow for those who have died and been hurt, and our support for their grieving families and friends,” Ardern said, with the minute’s silence to start exact-ly one week after the eruption began.

Of the 47 people on the island at the time of the eruption, the number killed rose to 17 with another fatality confirmed on Saturday, police said, without releasing details of name, age or nationality.

Another 27 remain in hospi-tals in New Zealand and Aus-tralia with 20 listed as being in a “critical” condition.

Scientists monitoring the is-land said the likelihood of an-

other eruption over the week-end was decreasing but the risk remained.

“Their new calculation was that there is a 35-50 per percent chance of an eruption occur-ring,” Natalia Deligne, a volcanic hazard and risk modeller, said.

The remains of six people were retrieved Friday in a dar-ing operation by elite soldiers with two military helicopters under threat of another blast.

The recovery had been on hold for days as poisonous gas-es continued billowing from the volcanic vent and the island re-mained blanketed in a thick lay-er of acidic ash.

The coroner in New Zealand

is working through a “robust” process to identify the bodies, authorities said.

Most of the people on the is-land were tourists from Austral-ia, the United States, Britain, China, Germany, Malaysia and New Zealand who were on a day trip to see the natural wonder.

The survivors’ injuries are so severe New Zealand doctors ini-tially estimated they would need to import 1.2 million square cen-timetres (185,000 square inch-es) of skin for grafts.

New Zealand police yester-day officially identified the first victim as 21-year-old Australian woman Krystal Browitt.

Browitt was on a family holi-day to celebrate her birthday in New Zealand when she joined her older sister Stephanie and father Paul on a visit to the is-land.

Her mother Marie stayed behind on the boat, and has since been by the bedside of her daughter and husband who were both originally in a coma in a hospital burns unit follow-ing the eruption, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.

“It has been quite difficult,” a friend of the Browitt daughters, Tahlia West said.

West remembered Krystal as “just a beautiful girl, very caring, very gentle.”

North Korea conducts ‘crucial test’: KCNAAFP | Seoul

North Korea has con-ducted another “crucial test” at its Sohae satellite

launch site, state media reported yesterday, as nuclear negotia-tions between Pyongyang and Washington remain stalled with a deadline approaching.

The announcement comes a day before US Special Envoy on North Korea Stephen Biegun is set to arrive in Seoul for a three-day visit, and after the United States tested a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.

“Another crucial test was suc-cessfully conducted at the So-hae Satellite Launching Ground from 22:41 to 22:48 on December 13,” a spokesman for the North’s National Academy of Defence Science said in a statement car-ried by the official KCNA news agency.

The “research successes” will be “applied to further bolstering up the reliable strategic nuclear deterrent” of North Korea, the spokesman added.

The statement did not provide further details on the test.

Sohae, on North Korea’s northwest coast, is ostensibly a facility designed for putting satellites into orbit.

But Pyongyang has carried out several rocket launches there that were condemned by the US and others as disguised long-range ballistic missile tests.

The North is banned from fir-ing ballistic missiles under UN Security Council resolutions, and rocket engines can be easily repurposed for use in missiles.

Frustrated by the lack of sanc-tions relief after three summits with President Donald Trump, North Korea has vowed an om-inous “Christmas gift” if the US does not come up with conces-sions by the end of the year.

Some analysts have suggested the North may be referring to an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Earlier this month the North announced it conducted what it

called a “very important test” at the same site in Sohae.

“It’s very likely that the North is going to fire something on Christmas day, and they may call it a rocket system when it actually is an ICBM,” Ahn Chan-il, a North Korean defector and researcher in Seoul, said.

“The tests at Sohae can be seen as a form of preparation for the launch -- whatever it will be -- on December 25.”

End-of-year deadlineNorth Korean leader Kim

Jong Un had agreed to shutter the Sohae site during a sum-

mit last year with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Pyong-yang as part of trust-building measures.

Kim has also held three meet-ings with US President Donald Trump since June 2018.

But his nuclear negotiations with Washington have been deadlocked since a summit in Hanoi broke up in February, and Pyongyang has issued a series of increasingly assertive comments in recent weeks as its time lim-it approaches. The North this week criticised Washington as “foolish” for convening a UN Security Council meeting over growing concern about short-range rockets fired from the iso-lated state.

By arranging the meeting, Washington “decisively helped us make a definite decision on what way to choose,” North Ko-rea’s foreign ministry spokes-man said. Last week, the North’s vice foreign minister warned of returning to a war of words with the US, threatening to resume referring to Trump as a “dotard” -- Pyongyang’s nickname for the US leader at the height of tensions in 2017.

The comments came a day af-ter it warned that if the US used military force against the North it would take “prompt corre-sponding actions at any level”.

Back in 2017 North Korea an-nounced it successfully tested an ICBM capable of reaching Alaska.

Superman’s cape and Bilbo’s pipe up for grabs

Los Angeles

Superman’s very first cape and Bilbo Baggins’ pipe

are each forecast to raise $100,000-$200,000 at a block-buster auction of rare Holly-wood memorabilia next week.

The props from Christopher Reeve’s “Superman” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy will headline Monday’s sale of some 400 cinephile items at Julien’s Auctions in Los An-geles.

Spokesman Jason DeBord said it was “very rare to have something that is identifiable” surviving from the first Super-man film in 1978.

The pipe was used by Ian Holm in “The Fellowship of the Ring,” and according to the auction house is the only example from the film known

to be in collectors’ hands.Bilbo used the pipe to blow

smoke rings from “the finest weed in the Southfarthing” -- before the hobbit’s efforts are upstaged by Gandalf’s elab-orate, galleon-shaped smoke exhalations.

They will go under the hammer alongside the “most important collection” of Star Trek memorabilia ever auc-tioned, according to organiz-ers, including a jacket worn by William Shatner’s Captain Kirk in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” estimated at $80,000-$100,000.

Also for sale by the Beverly Hills auctioneer will be items from classics such as “The Maltese Falcon” and “Gone with the Wind” through to 1990s hits “Jurassic Park” and “Forrest Gump.”

The cape from Christopher Reeve’s “Superman” (1978) is estimated to sell for $100,000-$200,000

Five held over man’s death in Hong Kong protestsHong Kong

Five Hong Kong teenag-ers have been arrested in

connection with the death of a man hit on the head by a brick during clashes be-tween pro- and anti-govern-ment protesters last month, police said yesterday.

The three males and two females aged 15 to 18 were arrested on Friday on suspi-cion of murder, rioting and wounding and had been detained pending further investigation, police said in a statement.

The incident occurred in mid-November as the pro-democracy movement was in its fifth month.

Footage of the incident showed rival groups of pro-testers throwing bricks at each other, during which a man was hit by a brick and fell to the ground.

The 70-year-old was rushed to hospital uncon-scious and certified dead the following day.

He was the second person in less than a week to die in protest-linked incidents.

Alex Chow, a 22-year-old university student, died on November 8 from head in-juries sustained during a fall in a multi-storey carpark while police and protesters were clashing.

Realise full potential of 5G: TRA official tells GCC, Arab nationsTDT | Manama

A top Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) executive called

on regional and Arab nations to explore use cases to realize the full potential of 5G.

“The applications are endless, and the world is exploring them as we speak, at a rapid pace, I might add,” Acting General Director of TRA Bahrain, Shaikh Nasser bin Mohamed Al Khalifa told participants of key confer-ence in the UAE on 5G.

He added: “With such power-ful network capacity and speed, we have a duty to explore use cases that are relevant to us here in the region.”

The event was organised by TRA UAE, in Dubai and attended by experts and business leaders.

The acting General Director told the conference that 5G is less about smartphones and

more about the many devices and applications that smart-phones will be connected to.

“The internet is entering into an age where we will see it come to life in the real world.

“If the opportunity is capital-ized on by all stakeholders, and

we all work together towards that goal, the world we know will change within a few short years. Bahrain can plant the seeds now to reap the benefits of that future.”

TRA started its experience with the 5G technology in

Bahrain with the allocation of 300MHz of spectrum in the C-band, divided equally among mobile network operators.

5 G c o m m e rc i a l s e r v i c-es launched in July this year, which led to witnessing a surge in peak download speeds more than 15 times faster than 4G.

US Supreme Court to hear Trump tax cases next year

Washington

The US Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear

cases next year involving the release of President Donald Trump’s tax returns and finan-cial records, setting the stage for a potential blockbuster ruling during the presidential election campaign.

Trump has been seeking to block access to his tax re-turns and other records in cases brought by New York prosecutors and Democrat-ic-controlled committees in the House of Representatives.

Lower courts have ruled that Trump must turn over the documents, but lawyers for the president appealed to the nation’s highest court, arguing that as chief executive, he has blanket immunity.

“We are pleased that the Su-preme Court granted review of

the president’s three pending cases,” Jay Sekulow, Trump’s personal attorney, said in a statement. “These cases raise significant constitutional is-sues.

“We look forward to pre-senting our written and oral arguments.”

The Supreme Court -- where conservative judges are in the majority -- said it will hear arguments in March with a decision to be issued before the court session ends June 30.

Two of the five conservative justices on the nine-member court -- Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh -- were appointed by Trump, who made a fortune in real estate before running for president in 2016.

A Supreme Court ruling in the case would come less than six months before Amer-icans go to the polls in Nove mber.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the cases during the March 2020 session with a ruling to be issued before June 30

Malaysian PM again hints he could stay on beyond 2020Doha

Malaysia’s 94-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mo-

hamad again raised the prospect yesterday that he could stay in office beyond 2020, declining to give a definitive pledge to step down.

Mahathir returned to power last year after dealing a historic election defeat to the corrup-

tion-plagued coalition that he once led and which had been in power for six decades.

Mahathir led Malaysia for more than two decades before his retirement in 2003 which paved the way for the leadership of now disgraced former prime

minister Najib Razak.“We had a vision to become a

fully developed country by 2020. Unfortunately, after I stepped down, the leadership took a dif-ferent course, different policies. And that caused the target not to be achieved in 2020,” Mahathir said at the Doha Forum event in the Qatari capital.

“What we have settled for

is we will still try, but we have moved the accomplishment date to between 2025 and 2030.

“I have promised that I would step down once I have resolved some of the major problems that have been left by the previous government. I promised that I will step down if a leadership candidate has been named by the coalition.”

Anwar Ibrahim, seen as the likely successor to Mahathir, has previously said that he expects to take office by May 2020, but Mahathir has publicly contra-dicted him several times.

And on Thursday, Anwar was questioned by police over alle-gations he sexually assaulted a male former aide, the latest such scandal to hit his career.

Johnson urges Britain to move past Brexit divideLondon

Prime Minister Boris John-son called on Britons to put

years of bitter divisions over the country’s EU membership behind them as he vowed to use his resounding election victory to finally deliver Brexit next month.

Johnson’s ruling Conserva-tives won their best result for three decades on Thursday night after promising to get Brit-ain out of the European Union on January 31, a new deadline set by Brussels.

The snap general election turned into a re-run of the original 2016 EU membership referendum, whose outcome paralysed Britain’s leaders and created divisions across society.

But in a victory speech in Downing Street on Friday, the former London mayor struck a magnanimous tone, vowing to listen to those who opposed Brexit and lead an inclusive gov-ernment.

“I urge everyone to find clo-sure and to let the healing be-gin,” he said hours after visiting Queen Elizabeth II to be reap-pointed prime minister.

Johnson staked his political career on the election, which created the possibility of the pro-EU opposition coming to

power and calling a new Brexit referendum that could undo the results of the first.

The gambit payed off spectac-ularly, with his Tories securing 365 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons -- their biggest ma-jority since the 1980s heyday of Margaret Thatcher.

It also devastated the main opposition Labour party, which suffered its worst result since 1935.

Labour’s socialist leader Jer-

emy Corbyn said he would step down after a period of “reflec-tion” within the century-old party.

The anti-Brexit Liberal Dem-ocrats also had a dismal night, falling to just 11 seats and losing their leader, Jo Swinson.

Honour the mandateLondon stocks and the Brit-

ish pound jumped on hopes of an end to years of uncertainty, which has hurt investment and economic growth.

Johnson said his party had an “overwhelming mandate from this election to get Brexit done”.

He promised to then focus on other public priorities, no-tably by increasing investment in healthcare, schools and in-frastructure.

“The work is now stepped up to make 2020 a year of prosper-ity and growth and hope,” he concluded, to cheers from aides and activists outside Number 10.

Anti-Brexit campaign groups expressed dismay at the result, which spells the end of attempts to keep Britain in the European Union, although many voters welcomed a decisive result.

“At least it’s clear,” said lawyer Gordon Hockey in London. “It’s not necessarily what I wanted but at least we know where we stand and Brexit will happen in some form or other.”

Johnson’s Conservatives won their best result for three decades on Thursday

Reuters | Madrid

Major economies resist-ed calls for bolder cli-mate commitments as

a UN summit in Madrid limped toward a delayed conclusion on Saturday, dimming hopes that nations will act in time to stop rising temperatures devastating people and the natural world.

With the two-week gathering spilling into the weekend, cam-paigners and many delegates slammed Chile, presiding over the talks, for drafting a summit text that they said risked throw-ing the 2015 Paris Agreement to tackle global warming into reverse.

“At a time when scientists are queuing up to warn about terri-fying consequences if emissions keep rising, and school children are taking to the streets in their millions, what we have here in Madrid is a betrayal of people across the world,” said Mo-hamed Adow, director of Power Shift Africa, a climate and ener-

gy think-tank in Nairobi. The annual climate marathon

had been due to conclude on Friday, but dragged on with min-isters mired in multiple disputes over implementing the Paris deal, which has so far failed to stem the upward march of global carbon emissions.

Long-time participants in the talks expressed outrage at the unwillingness of major polluters to show ambition commensurate with the gravity of the climate crisis, after a year of wildfires, cyclones, droughts and floods.

nations had been calling for the Madrid decision to signal that the more than 190 countries par-ticipating in the Paris process will submit bolder pledges to cut emissions next year.

The agreement enters a cru-cial implementation phase in 2020, when countries are sup-posed to ratchet up their am-bitions ahead of the next major round of talks in Glasgow.

If big economies such as Chi-na, India, Japan, Brazil, Australia and others fail to agree on more meaningful climate action soon, then scientists say already slim hopes of averting catastrophic

temperature rises will all but vanish.

‘Strong message’Although no advanced econ-

omy is yet on track for the kind of action scientists say is needed to steer the climate onto a safer path, all the EU’s 28 member states, bar Poland, agreed in Brussels on Thursday to target net zero emissions by 2050.

Krista Mikkonen, Finland’s environment minister, speaking on behalf of the EU, told the talks it would be “impossible to leave” without agreeing on a “strong message” on the need to redou-

ble pledges to cut emissions next year.

Ministers broke into groups on Saturday for eleventh-hour negotiations on a tangle of is-sues, including finance for climate-vulnerable countries, carbon markets and the all-im-portant issue of the strength of the summit’s final text.

With the clock ticking, Andrés Landerretche, Chile’s summit coordinator, said the goal was to conclude on Saturday. “The vast majority of delegations are asking for a more ambitious text, and that’s what we’re aiming at,” he told reporters.

Campaigners had said a draft text circulating earlier was among the worst they had seen at climate negotiations.

“The approach Chile has tak-en on this text shows how it has listened to the polluters and not to the people,” said Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International.

The Paris process has been weakened by a move by US Pres-ident Donald Trump to begin withdrawing the world’s larg-est historical emitter from the agreement last month, making it easier for other big countries to backslide.

Christmas mayhem feared as French transport strike continues• Strikers have warned of similar disruptions on Sunday and Monday.

Paris

France reeled under a crip-pling public transport strike

for a 10th day yesterday aimed at forcing the government to scrap a pension revamp, as fears grew of travel mayhem during Christmas.

Train traffic was severely dis-rupted with only one out four high speed long-distance trains and three of 10 regional trains running across the country.

But Paris and its environs re-mained the worst hit. Nine met-ro lines in the capital remained closed and there were skeletal transport services between the city and its suburbs.

Only 60 percent of the city’s bus services were running.

Strikers have warned of sim-ilar disruptions on Sunday and Monday.

On Saturday, the managing

director of the national rail op-erator SNCF Rachel Picard, told Le Parisien daily that “half of the passengers” would have trains to visit family for Christmas” but did not elaborate.

Unions are hoping for a re-peat of 1995, when they forced a rightwing government to back

down on pension reform after three weeks of metro and rail strikes just before Christmas.

The prospect of a protracted standoff has businesses fear-ing big losses during the crucial year-end festivities, and travel-lers worried that their holiday plans will fall through.

On Friday, Prime Minis-ter Edouard Philippe asked SNCF chief Jean-Pierre Faran-dou to draw up a list of ex-actly which trains would be running during the festive season.

“If the government wants the conflict to end before the holi-

days, they have all of next week to take the wise decision and scrap the point-based pension plan,” Laurent Blum, the gen-eral secretary of the hard-line CGT-Cheminots, the main SNCF union, told AFP.

Historic reform’The reform would do away

with 42 separate regimes, some of which offer early retirement and other benefits to public sec-tor workers such as train drivers, dockers and even Paris Opera employees.

The strike organisers have announced a massive protest for Tuesday when tens of thou-sands are expected to take to the streets again.

Meanwhile teachers, who have been mobilised since the start of the protest, on Friday gained guarantees from the gov-ernment of salary reviews which would cost the state 10 billion euros. The details were not re-vealed.

Policemen meanwhile end-ed their protest on Friday after managing to get assurances that their early retirement scheme would be maintained, owing to

the “dangerous” nature of their job.

Both Paris operas, the Gar-nier and the Bastille, cancelled Friday performances, and more through the weekend.

President Emmanuel Ma-cron’s government insists the changes will make for a fairer system and help erase pension system deficits forecast to reach as much as 17 billion euros ($19 billion) by 2025.

The average French person retires at just over 60, years ear-lier than most in Europe or other rich OECD countries.

Prime Minister Philippe has held talks with union lead-ers and more negotiations are scheduled over the coming week.

Philippe on Friday struck a combative note, saying he “has absolutely no fear of implement-ing this reform”.

Macron, who has maintained a studied silence since the pro-tests began, told reporters in Brussels on Friday that it was a “historic reform”, while ex-pressing solidarity with those affected by the fallout.

‘Jumanji: The Next Level’: Dwayne Johnson ups his comedy game The Rock, Kevin Hart and friends prepare for round two

• Sequel to the 2017 reboot brings back the A-list cast for more in-game avatar shenanigans

• Dwayne Johnson’s engaging film takes the game up a few notches

No sense putting the knock on this sequel to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to

the Jungle, which blew the cobwebs off the 1995 version starring Robin Williams. The reboot cast, again headed by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and the devilish Jack Black, are still fun compa-ny — you could do way worse if you’re looking for a comic blast for the holidays. The attitude of The Next Level, spearheaded by returning director Jake Kasdan and screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, is that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Remember last time when four teens — Spencer (Alex Wolff ), his shy girlfriend Mad-

ison (Morgan Turner), football hero Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) and digital princess Bethany (Madison Iseman) — nearly got themselves killed? They’d en-tered the Jumanji video game and wound up in the bodies of

adult avatars, such as muscled explorer Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), zoologist Franklin “Moose” Finbar (Hart), Profes-sor Shelly Oberon (Black) and bare-midriff commando Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan). It was a

hoot seeing nerdy Spencer in the body of Johnson, and Black purring like a teenage girl.

For Round Two, the filmmak-ers play mix-and-match with the avatars, giving nearly everyone a chance to try on a different alter

ego. Plus, the game zaps in two senior citizens: Danny De Vito as Spencer’s grouchy grandpop Eddie and Danny Glover as Ed-die’s estranged business partner Milo. Jumanji: The Next Level often feels like it needs a instruc-tion manual. But there are major comedy benefits, such as hearing Johnson imitating the voice of De Vito and fast-talking Hart slowing it down to a crawl to mimic one-word-at-a-time Glov-er. No one stays in one avatar for long, and no complaints about

the always-welcome Awkwafi-na showing up as a cat burglar named Ming. She’s a pleasure.

You’ll have to stay on your toes to follow the plot, which is really not worth the effort — some-thing about the teens rescuing the depressive Spencer who wanted another shot at being Bravestone, or something. What matters are the laughs and the FX, including a herd of pissed-off ostriches trying to chase the gang off a cliff and the film’s journey into the desert and up into snowy mountain peaks. It’s all in service of a theme that bears repeating, especially for young audiences, about the need to see the core of who people are through the masks they may be wearing. The finale pivots on the presence of Game of Thrones‘ Rory McCann, bellowing like thunder as a bearded villain named Jurgen the Brutal, who has a jewel that might get our heroes out of Jumanji, at least until the next sequel, which is not such a bad idea as long as this rowdy, ramshackle enter-prise keeps its tongue firmly in cheek.

It looks like Bol-lywood superstar Deepika Padukone

will be back in the fourth film of Vin Diesel’s “xXx” franchise, after all.

In a recent post on social media, Diesel hashtagged the names of some of his co-stars from the third film of the se-ries, “xXx: Return Of Xander Cage”, and Deepika’s was one of the names.

With an Instagram pic-ture that shows him wearing Xander Cage’s trademark enormous fur coat, Diesel wrote: “Appreciate the crea-tivity. How ironic that I had a Xander Cage meeting. Each Franchise has its re-spective beautiful Family. Blessed.”

He ran the caption with the hash tags: “#Ruby-Rose #ninadobrev #deep-ikapadukone #Liveforthis #XanderCage4.”

“xXx 4” will mark the revival of the high-oc-tane action thriller fran-chise two years after the third film, which launched Deepika in Hollywood. If she re-turns in the fourth instalment of the series, it will be her second film in Hollywood.

Margot Robbie’s secret Twitter outing

Los Angeles

Actress Margot Robbie says she creat-ed an anonymous Twitter account and followed as many young right-

wing American women as she could find on the digital medium.

The 29-year-old actress created the account to understand her character in the fictional Fox News reporter Kayla Pospisil in Jay Roach’s upcoming drama “Bombshell”.

“I didn’t grow up watching Fox News, and I didn’t grow up in the same place as (Kayla) I was struggling to under-stand that point of view for a while, and Twitter ended up being the most useful tool,” Robbie told ew.com.

“Because people are extremely vocal on Twitter,” she added.

“Bombshell” chronicles the downfall of news titan Roger Ailes (essayed by John Lithgow), whom multiple Fox employees accused of sexual harassment. Ailes denied all the claims until his death in 2017.

Actress Elnaaz Norouzi, who is known for her role in “Sacred Games”, has recently donated clothes to underprivileged children here.

“Since I grew up in very humble conditions and didn’t always have the privilege to buy everything I wanted or wear fancy clothes, I made it a habit to donate my clothes when I started making more money.

“I’ve been donating my clothes since many years now and especially since I grew up in Germany, Christ-

mas is big for me and many people don’t have a family to spend it together and give each

other gifts... so maybe I can make a few of those happy,” she said.

Elnaaz also urged others to do the same.

“It is like looking in a mir-ror,” Reynolds joked, adding of the gown Beckinsale was wearing in a clip the show displayed of the actress. “I mean, I was gonna wear that today!” he quipped.

The star continued: “This has been something I’ve heard for a long time; other people have said it to me, as well. We met one time, but yeah, I (have heard it).”

In October, Beckinsale also talked about the uncanny re-semblance to Reynolds while on a show.

Bent Viscaal, Dylan Young and Berkay Besler al l

climbed to the top of the po-dium yesterday following their respective races held in support of the FIA WEC Bapco 8 Hours of Bahrain at Bahrain Interna-tional Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

Viscaal and Young took a win apiece in the weekend’s final two sprints of the MRF Chal-lenge, while Besler won the last race of the Porsche Sprint Chal-lenge Middle East.

Both series were held as part of the support programme of this weekend’s World Endur-ance Championship (WEC).

Viscaal scored his second victory of the round after tak-ing race three in the MRF. He was on the winning end of a tough battle with pole-sitter David Schumacher, from whom he snatched the lead on lap one.

The Dutch youngster did well to hold on to the advantage from there, capturing the cheq-

uered flag by a narrow mar-gin of only 0.765 seconds over Schumacher. Viscaal completed the 10-lap sprint in 20 minutes 16.541 seconds.

Indian-American Yuven Sun-daramoorthy finished third 6.702s from first place.

In race four, Young pow-ered to a fine victory to cap the weekend’s single-seater action. The Australian had a good start, taking the lead on the first lap after starting on the front row alongside pole man Michelan-gelo Amendola.

He went on to lead the rest of the way and secure the victory in 20:27.236.

Manaf Hijjawi of Jordan was the runner-up 0.835 sec-onds behind while Schumach-er came third 2.574s back to cap a solid round in Bahrain where he stepped onto the po-dium in each of the MRF’s four races.

The MRF Challenge now heads to its final meeting of the season at Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai, India

in February. In the Porsche Sprint Chal-

lenge, Besler of Turkey capped an exciting season-opening weekend by winning the third and final race.

Besler claimed his first win of the new campaign with a comfortable 8.858-second gap ahead of German runner-up Leon Koehler, who enjoyed an impressive opening meeting at “The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East”.

Koehler’s finish earned him his third successive podium.

Saul Hack from South Africa came third 9.171s behind the victor.

All three top-placers were competing in the Pro class.

The ProAm category was clinched by Christoffer Berg-stroem of Sweden while the Am class was won by Shaikh Jaber Al Khalifa of Bahrain.

The Porsche Sprint Chal-lenge Middle East now heads to the second of five rounds in its 2019/2020 season, to be held in January in Dubai.

Bahrain’s up-and-coming race car driver His High-ness Shaikh Isa bin Ab-

dulla Al Khalifa is set to take part in the official rookie test of the FIA World Endurance Champi-onship (WEC) today at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

Shaikh Isa will be testing for leading British endurance racing team JOTA in the Jackie Chan DC Racing no. 37 Oreca 07 Gibson.

“I’m thrilled to get the chance to test JOTA’s Oreca LMP2 car in the WEC rookie test and to do so at my home track makes the op-portunity even better,” said His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

“While the car is new to me, I know the circuit very well and hope to use my knowledge to put on a good performance on Sunday.

“It’s also an honour to work with JOTA, a team with so much experience in endurance racing and a number of highly success-

ful drivers in their race line-up.” JOTA Sport Team Partner Da-

vid Clark commented: “We are delighted to welcome Shaikh Isa to JOTA for the rookie test on Sunday at BIC which is of course his home circuit.

“He will receive a warm wel-come from the team and will get tremendous technical and sport-ing advice from each member.”

The WEC rookie test takes place the day right after the FIA WEC Bapco 8 Hours of Bah-rain, the fourth round of the 2019/2020 WEC season.

Shaikh Isa has already built up a packed and impressive resume with experience in a number of different forms of motorsport, including the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East. He com-peted in the one-make series for the past three seasons, taking part in races at BIC, which he lists as his favourite racetrack, Dubai Autodrome and Yas Ma-rina Circuit.

Last month, Shaikh Isa was

a standout driver in the Pure McLaren GT Series event at Bahrain, winning one race and finishing runner-up in another, while setting the fastest overall race lap of the weekend.

In addition to his successes in GT cars, Shaikh Isa has also test-ed Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars in the past two years, but will make his debut in prototypes with JOTA on Sunday.

The WEC rookie test gives teams the opportunity to run up-and-coming promising driv-ers in the same cars that battled for victory over eight hours of racing on the previous day, while drivers get the experience of working in the WEC paddock.
