The recent news that bids have been received for a detailed study on Bahrain’s metro rail network development is a wel-

come one.The backbone of successful ur-

ban infrastructure is a reliable and sound public transportation system. When we talk of cities like London, for example, the underground rail and public buses, are so comfortable and effective that they have become symbolic of the city.

We hear of the metro rail system in Japan and the overland rail system linking the various European coun-tries so that commuters can move easily between workplaces and home and for leisure without taking their own private transport and clogging roads.

Similarly, once completed, Bah-rain’s metro network is also envis-aged as part of a plan to connect Gulf Cooperation Council nations with a railway line.

Especially in a small geographic space like Bahrain, a strong public transport system helps people to be more productive without overcrowd-ing the roads and traffic snarl-ups. Thus, the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication’s plan to ul-timately have a metro rail grid of 109 kilometres is a good long-term plan.

One transportation expert once told me that Bahrain is a place where most families have multiple cars – for every baby born in Bahrain, three new cars find their way onto Bahrain roads, he said. Now that may seem like comparing apples and carrots but it is a pretty graphic comparison.

Ever since the government invest-ed in a good public bus system with reliable timings, a wide network and comfortable buses, many people have chosen to use these bus-es instead of buying their own cars. Now that helps to lower the community’s carbon footprint and makes our roads more user-friendly.

The Metro rail in neighbouring Dubai is a fine example of how people take to an efficient public transport system – the fear that some express that Bahrain’s metro rail will not be used by the middle class and become a hub for only blue-collar workers is wrong.

If done right, we will see Bahrainis – especially youngsters whom we rely on to change our old-fashioned habits – lead the way and make the Bahrain metro rail a success that will rewrite the country’s transportation and development history.

“Especially in a small geo-graphic space like Bahrain, a strong pub-lic transport system helps people to be more produc-tive without overcrowding the roads and traffic snarl-ups. Thus, the Ministry of Transpor-tation and Telecommuni-cation’s plan to ultimately have a metro rail grid of 109 kilometres is a good long-term plan.”

Other provisions included granting Emiratis in govern-ment jobs a leave of absence and 50% of their salary for 6-12 months to start their own busi-nesses.

The initiatives are part of 50 new economic projects the UAE is announcing this month to boost its competitiveness.

The regional business and tourism hub has launched measures over the past year to attract investment and foreign expatriates to help the economy recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of these included liber-alising laws regarding cohabi-tation before marriage, alcohol and personal status laws.

Last week the UAE said it wanted to attract $150 billion in foreign direct investment over

nine years and it introduced more flexible visa categories to attract residents and skilled workers.

“It has always been a dif-ficult act to balance creating incentives for expats to relo-cate to the UAE and stay for a long time while creating gain-ful employment for the citizen population,” said Hasnain Ma-lik, head of equity strategy at Tellimer.

“Anything that raises the all-in, operating cost of for-eign-owned companies reduces the competitiveness of the UAE as a location,” he said, comment-ing on the new private sector measures.

A UAE trade delegation is in the United States this week to deepen the trade partnership, state news agency WAM said.

Major stock markets in the Gulf fell in early trade on

Sunday in response to Friday’s slide on Wall Street, with the Abu Dhabi index easing from the previous session’s record highs.

US main stock indexes fin-ished lower on Friday after data showing persistent US inflation dampened optimism about an easing in US-China tensions after a call between President Joe Biden and Chi-na’s Xi Jinping.

Saudi Arabia’s benchmark index dropped 0.3%, on track to extend losses from the pre-vious session, pressured by a 0.3% fall in Al Rajhi Bank.

Aljazira Takaful advanced 2.4%, after Capital Market Authority approved a capital increase request of the insurer through the issuance of bonus shares.

n Abu Dhabi, the index lost 0.2%, falling from the previous session’s record highs. Emir-

ates Telecommunications Group declined 1.1%, while the country’s largest lender First Abu Dhabi Bank was down 0.2%.

The United Arab Emirates said on Friday residents who had been fully vaccinated with a shot approved by the World Health Organization could return as of Sept. 12 from a list of previously suspended countries.

Dubai’s main share index eased 0.1%, hit by a 0.5% fall in blue-chip developer Emaar Properties and 0.4% decrease in sharia-compliant lender Dubai Islamic Bank.

Israel’s Tnuva to help Emirates Food Industries expand dairy productsReuters | Jerusalem

Emirates Food Industries (EFI) has enlisted the help

of Israel’s largest food maker, Tnuva, to expand its range of dairy products, starting with a new facility to produce the popular Mediterranean cheese Labneh, Tnuva said yesterday.

Under a licensing agreement, Tnuva will help build a pro-duction line in Dubai in return for royalties. It is the first such deal between food companies in Israel and the United Arab Emirates since the countries normalized ties a year ago, Tnu-va said.

Labneh is a tart, creamy cheese often made locally across the Middle East.

Tnuva said its formula is unique, since it is able to mass produce while using a tradi-tional ‘drip bag’ method and that EFI found its product to be better than anything available in the UAE.

“Later on the activity will

include support in the devel-opment and production of ad-ditional products,” Tnuva said.

The was no immediate com-ment from EFI.

The licensing agreement is for 10 years with an option to extend and Tnuva said it po-

tentially will bring “millions of dollars of revenue in the com-ing years.”

Tnuva has dozens of sites all over Israel. It has been con-trolled by Chinese food con-glomerate Bright Food (SHMN-GA.UL) since 2015.

Toyota, Honda oppose US House electric vehicle tax planReuters | Washington

Toyota Motor Corp and Hon-da Motor Co on Saturday

sharply criticised a proposal by Democrats in the US House of Representatives to give un-ion-made electric vehicles in the United States an additional $4,500 tax incentive.

Toyota said in a statement that

the plan unveiled late Friday discriminates “against Ameri-can autoworkers based on their choice not to unionize.”

The bill, set to be voted on Tuesday by the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Com-mittee as part of a proposed $3.5 trillion spending bill, would ben-efit Detroit’s Big Three auto-

makers, which have union-rep-resented auto plants.

In a statement, Honda called the bill “unfair” and said it “dis-criminates among EVs made by hard-working American auto workers based simply on wheth-er they belong to a union. ... The Honda production associates in Alabama, Indiana and Ohio

who will build our EVs deserve fair and equal treatment by Con-gress.”The proposal, estimated to cost $33 billion to $34 billion over 10 years, would boost to up to $12,500 the maximum tax credit for electric vehicles, up from the current $7,500. The $12,500 figure includes a $500 credit for using US-produced

batteries. The proposal is a key part of Democratic President Joe Biden’s goal to ensure EVs comprise at least 50% of US ve-hicle sales by 2030 and boost American union jobs.

The bill, however, does away with phasing out automak-ers’ tax credits after they hit 200,000 electric vehicles sold,

which would make General Motors Co and Tesla Inc eligi-ble again. It would also create a new smaller credit for used EVs of up to $2,500.GM, Ford Motor Cob and Stellantis NV, the parent of Chrysler, assemble their US-made vehicles in plants represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.

China gifts new $150 million national stadium to CambodiaAFP News

China handed over to Cambodia a $150 mil-

lion stadium in Phnom Penh, with officials saying Sunday it is the result of Beijing’s biggest ever in-frastructure grant to the country.

The 60,000-capacity ven-ue is the latest project under China’s trillion-dollar Belt and Road initiative, a plan to fund infrastructure pro-jects and increase its sway overseas.

The presentation of the arena, intended as the main venue when Cambodia hosts the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023, was made by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his visit.

Cambodia’s tourism min-ister Thong Khon said the $150 million stadium repre-sented China’s largest ever grant to Cambodia for an infrastructure project.

News in brief u Australia has purchased an additional 1 million doses of Moderna’s (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccine from the European Union, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, as the country accelerates its inoculation programme to fight record high infections. The purchase is a boost for Australia’s A$2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) economy, which is at risk of slipping into its second recession in as many years as a result of lockdowns of the country’s two most populous cities, Sydney and Melbourne. These lockdowns will remain until 70% of the country’s near 26 million population are fully vaccinated, which is not expected until late October. But Morrison said the million doses will arrive later this week. Australia has ordered 25 million vaccines from Moderna.

u New Zealand has purchased 500,000 doses of Pfizer’s (PFE.N) COVID-19 vaccine from Denmark, Prime Minister Jacinda

Ardern said on Sunday, as the country struggles with a cluster of infections in its largest city. New Zealand, which reported 20 locally acquired COVID-19 cases in Auckland on Sunday, said the vaccines will arrive within days. The latest outbreak now totals 599 infections since the first case was detected in late August. “There is now more than enough vaccine in the country to vaccinate at the world leading rates we were hitting earlier in the month, and I strongly encourage every New Zealander not yet vaccinated to do so as soon as possible,” Ardern said in an e-mailed statement.

u Israel carried out air strikes in the Gaza Strip yesterday in response to Palestinian rocket fire into its territory, the Israeli military said. Tension between Israel and the Palestinians has risen over the past week, after six Palestinian militants escaped from a maximum security Israeli jail on Monday. Israeli forces have since captured four of the inmates. Drawing Israeli air strikes, Gaza militants fired a rocket into Israel on Friday when two of the prisoners were apprehended and then again on Saturday, after two more escaped inmates were caught. The Israeli military said it struck targets belonging to Hamas, the Islamist armed group that rules Gaza. There were no reports of casualties.

u A drone attack hit near US forces stationed at Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq on Saturday, Iraqi Kurdish security officials said. The internal security service for Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region, of which Erbil is the capital, initially said three rockets had hit near the airport.

A second statement by the Kurdish counter-terrorism force said the attack had been carried out by explosive-laden drones. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Witnesses said they heard at least six explosions in the area.

KNOW WHAT

No vaccine passportsUK Prime Minister to set out winter COVID-19 plan

• Winter COVID-some 19 plan will set out next phase

• Government to end emergency powers

• Night-time industry welcomes U-turn on passports

Reuters | London

British Prime Minister Bo-ris Johnson will set out on Tuesday his plans to man-

age the COVID-19 pandemic in the winter months, announcing a decision to scrap the introduction of vaccine passports and steps to end some emergency powers.

Johnson, under fire from some in his governing Conservative Party for raising taxes to fix a health and social care crisis, looks set to try to soothe those critics by ditching plans to introduce passports despite an increasing number of coronavirus cases.

Speaking to broadcasters, Health Minister Sajid Javid said he did not anticipate more lock-downs and that the vaccine pass-ports would not be introduced in England, as the government depends instead on vaccines and testing to defend the public.

“Now that we’re entering au-tumn and winter ... the prime minister this week will be setting out our plans to manage COVID over the coming few months and in that we will be making it clear that our vaccine programme is working,” Javid told Sky News.

He told the BBC he was not “an-ticipating any more lockdowns” but would not take the measure off the table, that the government would not go ahead with vaccine passports to allow people to at-tend mass events and he wanted to “get rid of” PCR tests for trav-ellers as soon as possible.

‘LOT OF VIRUS AROUND’Javid added the government

would remain “cautious”, but “the vaccine programme, our testing

programme, our surveillance programme, the new treatments ... this is all our wall of defence and whilst there’s a lot of virus around, it is working”.

The night-time industry wel-comed the U-turn on vaccine passports, with Michael Kill, the chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) trade body, saying he hoped busi-nesses would be able to “start to rebuild a sector that has consist-ently been at the sharp end of this pandemic”.

The government also said it expected Britain’s Joint Com-mittee for Vaccination and Im-munisation (JCVI) to confirm the details of a vaccination booster programme to begin this month.

Britain, which has one of the

highest official COVID-19 death tolls in the world, has seen the number of cases climb over the last few months after easing re-strictions in July, when the gov-ernment first bet on vaccines to protect the public.

The government was handed sweeping emergency powers in March 2020 with the intro-duction of the Coronavirus Act, which included measures to shut down businesses, to close down sectors of the economy and the right to detain infectious people.

“These extraordinary times re-quired necessary but intrusive measures. But I’m determined to get of rid of any powers we no longer need because of our vac-cine defences,” said Johnson in a statement.

Taliban say woman can study but classes must be segregated

• Female students would be taught by women wherever possible

• Haqqani said hijab religious veils would be mandatory for all female students

Reuters

Women in Afghanistan will be allowed to study

in universities as the country seeks to rebuild after decades of war but gender-segregation and Islamic dress code will be mandatory, the Taliban’s new Higher Education minister said yesterday.

The minister, Abdul Baqi Haqqani, said the new Tali-ban government, named last week, would “start building the country on what exists today” and did not want to turn the clock back 20 years to when the movement was last in power.

He said female students would be taught by women wherever possible and class-rooms would remain separated, in accordance with the move-ment’s interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

“Thanks to God we have a high number of women teach-ers. We will not face any prob-lems in this. All efforts will be made to find and provide women teachers for female stu-dents,” he told a news confer-ence in Kabul.

Taliban officials have said women will be able to study and work in accordance with sharia law and local cultural traditions but strict dress rules will apply. Haqqani said hijab religious veils would be man-datory for all female students but did not specify if this meant headscarves or compulsory face coverings.

On Saturday, a group, ap-parently made up of women students in black robes that covered them completely from head to foot, demonstrated in Kabul in support of the rules on dress and separate classrooms.

Haqqani said where no wom-

en teachers were available spe-cial measures would be adopted to ensure separation.

“When there is really a need, men can also teach (women) but in accordance with sharia, they should observe the veil,” he said. Classrooms would be curtained off to divide male and female students where neces-sary and teaching could also be done through streaming or closed circuit TV.

Classrooms divided by cur-tains have already been seen in many places since the West-ern-backed government col-lapse and the Taliban seized Kabul last month.

Haqqani told reporters that gender segregation would be enforced across Afghanistan and all subjects taught at col-leges would also be reviewed in the coming months.

The Taliban have promised a softer form of rule, but many fear women will be excluded from education under new rules

Iran to allow IAEA to service nuclear monitoring cameras after talks• IAEA chief Rafael Grossi held talks with Iranian atomic body

• IAEA said this week it wanted urgent access to monitoring equipment

• Iran agrees to replacement of the memory cards of IAEA cameras

• IAEA member states may issue resolution critical of Iran that could jeopardise talks

Reuters | Dubai

Iran is to allow the UN nuclear watchdog to service monitoring

cameras at Iranian nuclear sites after talks yesterday with IAEA head Rafael Grossi, according to the head of Iran’s atomic energy body and a joint statement.

The talks with Internation-al Atomic Energy Agency chief Grossi were aimed at easing a standoff between Tehran and the West just as it threatens to esca-late and scupper negotiations on reviving the Iran nuclear deal.

The IAEA said this week that there had been no progress on two key issues: explaining uranium traces found at old, undeclared sites and getting urgent access to monitoring equipment so the agency can continue to keep track of parts of Iran’s nuclear programme as per the 2015 deal.

“We agreed over the replace-ment of the memory cards of the agency’s cameras,” Mohammad Eslami, who heads the Atom-ic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), was quoted as saying by state media.

“IAEA’s inspectors are permit-ted to service the identified equip-ment and replace their storage media which will be kept under the joint IAEA and AEOI seals in the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the nuclear bodies said in a joint statement.

The IAEA told member states in reports this week that there had been no progress on two central issues: explaining uranium traces found at several old, undeclared sites and getting urgent access to some monitoring equipment so the agency can continue to keep track of parts of Iran’s nuclear programme as provided for by the 2015 deal.

“These reports were the of-ficial stamp on what we have been saying for a long time al-ready: The Iranians are advanc-ing unobstructed on the nuclear (weapon) project,” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in televised remarks on Sunday. Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful.

Separate, indirect talks between the United States and Iran on both returning to compliance with the deal have been halted since June. Washington and its European al-lies have been urging hardline President Ebrahim Raisi’s admin-istration, which took office in Au-gust, to return to the talks.

Afghan police return to work alongside TalibanAFP | Kabul

Afghan police at Kabul air-port have returned to work

manning checkpoints along-side Taliban security for the first time since the Islamists seized power, officers said yesterday.

When the Taliban swept into Kabul last month ousting the government, police abandoned their posts, fearful of what the Islamists would do.

But two officers said they had returned to work Saturday af-ter receiving calls from Taliban commanders.

On Sunday, an AFP corre-spondent at the airport saw bor-der police members deployed at several checkpoints outside the main buildings of the airport,

including the domestic terminal.“I came back to work yester-

day more than two weeks after

being sent home,” one of the police force members told AFP, speaking on condition of ano-

nymity.“I received a call from a senior

Taliban commander who asked me to come back,” another of-ficer said.

“Yesterday was great, so hap-py to serve again.”

The Taliban say they have granted a general amnesty to everyone who worked for the former government -- including the army, police and other secu-rity branches.

Officials say they want to integrate the opposing forces, but have not spelled out how this will happen -- or how they will sustain a security appara-tus made up of around 600,000 people.

Kabul airport was severely damaged during the chaotic evacuation of over 120,000 peo-

ple that ended with the with-drawal of US forces on August 30.

The Taliban, who swept into Kabul after routing government forces on August 15, have been scrambling to get the capital’s airport operating again with Qa-tari technical assistance.

The United Arab Emirates has set up an air bridge to deliver tons of aid to Afghanistan, with aircraft bringing in hundreds of tonnes of medical and food supplies.

An airport employee who handles security for a private company confirmed that the border police had been deployed around the airport since Sat-urday.

“They are sharing the security with the Taliban,” he said.

The Taliban say they have granted a general amnesty to everyone who worked for the former government -- including the army, police and other security branches

The issue of women’s edu-cation has been one of the

central questions facing the Taliban as they seek to per-suade the world that they

have changed since the harsh fundamentalist rule they imposed in the 1990s when women were largely banned from studying or

working outside the home.

Taliban make themselves at home in Dostum’s mansionAFP | Kabul

Taliban fighters have taken over the glitzy Kabul man-

sion of one of their fiercest ene-mies -- the warlord and fugitive ex-vice president Abdul Rashid Dostum.

Now in the hands of rank and file Taliban fighters, the opu-lent villa has given the austere Islamists a peek into the lives of Afghanistan’s former rulers, and they say the luxury is the proceeds of years of endemic corruption.

Along an endless corridor with a thick apple-green carpet, a young fighter sleeps slumped on a sofa, his Kalashnikov rifle resting against him, as exotic fish glide above him in one of seven giant tanks.

The fighter is part of the per-sonal security detail of Qari Sa-lahuddin Ayoubi -- one of the new regime’s most powerful commanders -- who installed his company of 150 men in the mansion on August 15, the day Kabul fell.

The luxury saw on a tour of the mansion would be unim-aginable for most ordinary Af-ghans.

Huge glass chandeliers hang in cavernous halls, large soft sofas furnish a maze of lounges and an indoor swimming pool is finished with intricate tur-quoise tiles.

It even boasts a sauna, a Turkish steam bath and a fully equipped gym.

It is an out of this world ex-perience for the new occupants, who for years sacrificed crea-ture comforts for rebellion -- living on their wits in the plains, valleys and mountains of rural Afghanistan.

But the new head of the household -- now the military commander of four provinces -- makes it clear his men will not get used to the luxury.

“Islam never wants us to have a luxurious life,” Ayoubi told AFP, adding luxury comes in paradise, “the life after death”.

‘The thieves’ quarter’The mansion’s owner, Dos-

tum, is a notorious figure woven into the fabric of Afghanistan’s recent history.

A former paratrooper, com-munist commander, warlord and vice president, he was the very definition of a cunning po-litical survivor who weathered over four decades of conflict in war-torn Afghanistan.

Despite a series of war crimes linked to Dostum’s forces, the former Afghan government hoped his military acumen and seething hatred of the Taliban would help them survive.

But his stronghold was over-run and the greying 67-year-old fled across the border to Uzbekistan.

Dostum is widely suspected to have hugely profited from the corruption and embezzle-ment that discredited the for-mer government.

Several officials illegally took land to build luxurious

mansions in one neighbour-hood, earning it the nickname “Thieves’ Quarter” among lo-cals.

In one wing of the enor-mous house, Taliban fighters relaxed in a massive tropical greenhouse of several hundred square metres under a huge glass roof.

That is overlooked by a mez-zanine dominated by a dark wood bar -- a testament to the reported decadent tastes of a general renowned for a pen-chant for late nights and strong liquor. The Taliban have good reason to hate Dostum.

In 2001, he was accused of killing more than 2,000 fighters -- locking many in containers in the middle of the desert where they suffocated under a scorch-ing sun.

Kristen Stewart shares her ‘favourite’ thing about Princess Diana

IANS | London

Hollywood Actress Kris-ten Stewart, who is set to play Princess Diana

in the movie ‘Spencer’, said she loved how “present” the late royal was.

The 31-year-old actress will play the late royal, who died in a car crash in 1997 at the age of 36, in Pablo Larrain’s biographical drama, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

She said: “Even when she looked her most

beautiful and most substantial, she also felt like she could kick her shoes off and like walk outside with you, ask how you are, and you would feel that honesty from her. It’s hard to do that when you are teetering around on heels and look-ing like no one can come near you.

“We do see that as beautiful but she was really able to be there; she was so present -- that’s my favour-ite thing about her.”

The movie takes place a few days over Christmas 1991 at Queen Eliz-abeth’s Sandringham Estate, as Di-ana, who was born Diana Frances

Spencer, decides to end her mar-riage to Prince Charles.

Stewart said there were royal advisers around on the Motion Pictures’ set to ensure the film remained “authentic”, and she learned to curtsy while shooting the movie.

“We had royal advisers, we had people to tell us all the things that you couldn’t know as an outsider. The stage that we depict in the film is a true unravelling,” she added.

“So, once I learned the curtsy and I learned that we are supposed not to go in the kitchen ourselves

and steal food, all of those details, I don’t really remember them, but there was always someone around to make sure that if anything was out of line that we were remaining authentic and we weren’t under-mining what we were trying to do, because obviously I’m American and not from that country.”

The actress also said the script won’t come as a big shock.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, she added: “The movie doesn’t offer any new informa-tion. It doesn’t profess to know anything.”

Even when she looked her most beautiful and most substantial, she also felt like she could kick her shoes off and like walk outside with you, ask how you are,

Raducanu makes tennis history with US Open final winBritish teen Emma Raducanu beats Leylah Fernandez in US Open women’s final

• Victor came through qualifying and did not lose a set

AFP | New York

British teenager Emma Raducanu completed the greatest underdog title

run in tennis history on Satur-day, becoming the first qualifier to capture a Grand Slam crown by defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the US Open wom-en’s final.

The 18-year-old was the first British woman in 44 years to win a Slam crown after beating 19-year-old left-hander Fernan-dez 6-4, 6-3 to take the $2.5 mil-lion (2.1 million euro) top prize.

“I knew I would have to dig deep,” Raducanu said. “It was an incredibly difficult match but I thought the level was really high. I had to play some of my best tennis.”

It was a stunning achieve-ment for the unheralded 150th-ranked teen, who didn’t drop a set in three qualifying matches and seven main-draw matches over two weeks in producing a stunner for the ages.

Raducanu is the youngest Slam champion since Maria Sharapova at 17 in 2004 at Wim-bledon.

Not since Virginia Wade in 1977 at Wimbledon had a British woman taken a Slam singles ti-tle, with Raducanu the first Brit-on to claim the US Open crown since Wade in 1968.

Queen Elizabeth II was among the first to pay tribute to Radu-canu’s incredible triumph.

“It is a remarkable achieve-ment at such a young age, and

is testament to your hard work and dedication,” the British monarch said in a statement.

Wade and British men’s ten-nis legend Tim Henman were among a sellout crowd of 23,700 that created an electric atmos-phere at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first-ever women’s Slam final between unseeded players.

“It means so much to have Virginia here and also Tim and to have such British legends and icons, to follow in their foot-steps and it gave me the belief I could actually do it.”

Raducanu has had the fewest Slam starts of any women’s Slam winner, reaching the fourth round in July at Wimbledon in her only prior Slam appearance.

Fernandez, ranked 73rd, had ousted defending champion Naomi Osaka, second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and fifth seed Elina Svitolina in her epic run to the final.

“I’m very proud of myself the way I played the last two weeks,” Fernandez said.

“I hope to be back here in the finals and having the right tro-

phy,” added a tearful Fernandez, who paid tribute to New York as the city marked the 20th anni-versary of the 9/11 attacks.

“I know it’s especially hard on this day for New York,” she said. “I just want to say I hope I can be as strong and resilient as New York has been the past 20 years.”

Raducanu is the youngest US Open champion since 17-year-old Serena Williams in 1999 and the first US Open women’s champion not to drop a set since Williams in 2014.

The prodigy showdown was the first all-teen Slam final since Williams beat 18-year-old Mar-tina Hingis for the 1999 US Open title.

“Both of us were playing fear-less tennis for two weeks,” Ra-ducanu said. “I hope we play each other in many more tour-naments and hopefully finals.”

Blood, sweat and tearsAfter an early exchange of

hard-fought breaks, Raducanu broke in the 10th game to take the first set, blasting a forehand winner after 58 minutes.

In the second set, Fernandez broke to 2-1 but Raducanu blast-ed a backhand cross-court ser-vice return winner to equalize 2-2 and later whipped a fore-hand passing winner by the Ca-nadian to break for 4-2.

Fernandez saved two match points in the eighth game and held to 5-3, then earned a break chance at 30-40 in the ninth.

But on the point, Raducanu skidded on her left knee and opened a bleeding cut. The match was halted while a train-er bandaged the wound as Fer-nandez spoke with the referee.

“I didn’t know how serious her fall was, so that’s why I went to see the official,” Fernandez said. “It was just too bad it hap-pened in that specific moment with me, with the momentum. But it’s sports, it’s tennis. Just got to move on.”

When play resumed, Fer-nandez sent a forehand long to squander the break chance and Raducanu won after an hour and 51 minutes on her third ace, leaving Fernandez in tears.

“I was going for that serve the whole match. I can’t believe I finally hit it,” Raducanu said. “I was just praying not to double fault.”

The former BRAVE CF Su-per Welterweight title

“Olli is a tough fighter, I think he is physically strong, but nothing much surprises me, nothing I haven’t seen before”,

Naurdiev said. “Everything, I am the best in everything, bet-ter striker, better wrestler and better grappler”.

Ricciardo wins F1 Italian GP as Hamilton, Verstappen crash out

AFP | Monza

Daniel Ricciardo won the Formula One Ital ian

Grand Prix yesterday as the Australian took advantage of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s dramatic crash which eliminated both cham-pionship rivals.

Ricciardo was followed by his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the British team’s first win since the 2012 Bra-zilian GP, while Valtteri Bot-tas inherited third, despite starting in last place, due to a five-second time penalty for Sergio Perez.

Red Bull’s Verstappen still leads seven-time world cham-pion Hamilton by five points at the top of the drivers’ stand-ings as they both finished in the gravel following their crash halfway through the race.

Ricciardo, whose father is from Italy, was delighted with not only his first win since Mo-naco in 2018 but also McLar-

en’s first one-two finish in 11 years, greeting the fans in Italian with a huge smile on his face.

“To lead literally from start to finish, I don’t think any of us expected that. There was something in me on Friday, I knew something good was to come,” said Ricciardo.

“To not only win but to get a one-two, it ’s insane. For McLaren to be on the podium it’s huge, let alone one-two... For once I’m lost for words.”

Team Bahrain Victorious rider Sonny Colbrelli yes-

Riding for the Italian nation-al team, Colbrelli beat Remco Evenepoel of Belgium in a two-man sprint. Benoit Cosnefroy of France claimed third place to complete the overall po-dium.

“It’s amazing—a fantastic victory,” Colbrelli was quot-ed as saying. “I didn’t have a good feeling at the beginning of the race. I had also got a lot of pressure as this race was a huge opportunity for me. But the Italian team worked per-fectly, and [Matteo] Trentin, in the final, supported me ex-cellently.

“Then I managed to follow [Remco] Evenepoel on the last climb, although I was suffer-ing. I’m so happy also because I took this win in Italy and as

an Italian is something spe-cial.”

Colbrelli headed into yes-terday’s event as a pre-race favourite, having excelled recently with Team Bahrain Victorious.

Bahrain defeat India in Asian volleyballKingdom’s senior men’s national team open bid in continental championship with straight-sets victory in Pool A of preliminaries

• Yaqoob Mohammed top scores for nationals with match-high 15 points, while Mohammed Anan and Mahmood Abdulwahed add 13 apiece

TDT | Manama

Bahrain opened their cam-paign in Pool A of the 21st Asian Senior Men’s Vol-

leyball Championship in Chiba, Japan yesterday with a resound-

ing 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-21) vic-tory over India at Chiba Port Arena.

The nationals, coached by Bra-zilian Marco Antonio Queiroga, had superior playmaking that helped spell the difference in the

contest, in which Mohammed Yaqoob finished with a match-high 15 points, and with Mo-hammed Anan and Mahmood Abdulwahed contributing 13 points apiece.

The first set was tightly con-

tested, but by its end, Ali Al-sairafi helped earn the early match advantage after unleash-ing a service winner to make it 27-25 yo seal the opener.

In the second, Bahrain were superior from the service line. Setter and captain Mahmood Hassan ran his plays well and utilised the team’s advantage at the wings. They seized a 19-18 lead late on, and India’s errors in attack eventually proved costly as Bahrain were able to claim a two-set lead.

They then rode their mo-mentum into the third set and a Yaqoob point capped the match win and gave the Bahrainis the strong start to the tournament.

The Bahrainis will hope to continue their winning ways today when they take on hosts Japan, who are also Asia’s bronze-medallists from the com-petition’s previous edition. The

game is scheduled for 12noon start, Bahrain time. Bahrain then wrap up their Pool A campaign against Qatar tomorrow.

The Japanese defeated their Qatari rivals 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) in yesterday’s other Pool A contest.

Defending champions Iran, Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong are in Pool B, while Pool C consists of reigning silver-med-allists Australia, China, Sri Lan-ka and Kuwait. South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia make up Pool D. The top two teams from each group make it to the round of eight.

The semi-finals are sched-uled for September 18, while the bronze and gold medal games are set for September 19.

This year’s championship is Bahrain’s 10th participation in the continent’s leading event. Bahrain first competed in 1979 as hosts, and last appeared in 2015 when they finished 12th. They did not compete in the last two editions in 2017 and 2019.

Bahrain’s best classification was eighth, which they achieved in the 1987 edition.
