Christians Are Like PumpkinsGod picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all of the dirt off, some ofwhich you may have gotten from other pumpkins. Then, He cuts the top off andscoops out all of the yucky stuff. He removes seeds of doubt, hate, greed, unforgiveness, etc. Then, He carves a new smiling face and puts His light inside ofyou to shine for all the world to see. Are you letting your light shine?

Grand Knight’s Column

From your Grand Knight: Worthy Brothers and Ladies, here we are already with the first month’s business for the new fraternal year already finished. We have a lot ahead of us before the end of 2017 and I want everyone to know that I truly appreciate all the efforts from our volunteers who are working at our current and future events. So this leads me to this last Sunday (Oct 1) when we had the honor of ushering at Holy Hill. Thank you my fellow Brothers for being there and representing Our Lady of the Rosary Council 722. Thanks Andy, Mike, Modesto, Bernie, Jim, and Larry for stepping forward and showing your commitment to the Council and to your Faith and Church. It would be nice to see more Brothers stepping forward in years to come!!!!

While ushering I had a few minutes to pick up a copy of the Basilica’s church bulletin and what to my surprise do I see, but a short article on the history of the Rosary. Now many of you may have seen this before but I am going to insert it into the rest of my article. So here goes: The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. What is the origin of the rosary prayer and beads? Several explanations for the origin of the rosary exist. The most popular is that Our Lady gave the rosary to St. Dominic (1170-1221) who promoted it during his lifetime. The devotion caught on leading to today’s rosary prayer. Others trace the roots of the rosary to a much older practice in the early Church, people took seriously Paul’s injunction to pray always. One significant tradition centered on the daily praying of

Memorial Mass All Knights and their Ladies are invited to attend the Memorial Mass and luncheon for Council 722 to honor our brothers who have passed on to eternal life. The Mass will take place at Holy Name Parish in Sheboygan on Sunday, October 29 at 10:30 am. The Honor Guard will be present to assist in the service. A luncheon will be served after the Mass at the KC Center for a free-will offering for Knights and guests. It is complimentary for all widows. This will be a time for us to give thanks, to remember our passed Knights and to pray for God’s continued blessings on us all. Please make time for this special event. We hope you can attend. Please notify Mark Knabel, 920-459-9359 or Larry Lenhardt,920-980-5694, to make your reservations.

Chaplain’s Column Brother Knights and Families,

My October column will always begin with this short history of our Council’s dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary who feast is October 7th. This is a brief explanation from the “Loose-Leaf Lectionary” published by the Liturgical Press. This feast was instituted by Pope Saint Pius V on the anniversary of the navel victory won by the Christian forces over a powerful pagan force at Lepanto in 1571, a victory attributed to the Mother of God, whose aid had been invoked through the Holy Rosary. The celebration is a stimulus to all to meditate on the mysteries of Christ under the guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was so closely associated with the incarnation, passion, and glorious resurrection of the Son of God. Whether we pray the Rosary regularly, occasionally, or not at all, the mysteries of the Rosary challenge us to live out life in imitation of Christ’s truths. What does that mean to us? Let’s fast forward of the end of the month and Halloween. Is this event just a fun evening or is it making a mockery of the November 1st feast of All Saints Day? You can make you own decision after reading the 10/30/2016 Sheboygan Press. In ancient Britain and Iceland, the Celtic Festival of Samhain was observed on October 31st, which signifies “summers end” or November. The souls of the dead, consisting of ghosts, witches, goblins, black cats, fairies and demons of all kinds, were supposed to revisit their homes on this day. Halloween symbols, customs, and practices undoubtedly have had a variety of influences upon Western culture throughout history. People lit candles or lanterns (hence the jack-o’-lanterns) to keep the spirits away. If they had to go outside, they wore costumes and masks to frighten the spirits—introducing a tradition, along with trick-or-treating—that was passed down through the ages. Happy Fall, Fr. Dick

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for October Vatican City, 1 October 2017 (VIS) – The Holy Father's prayer intention for October is: Workers and the Unemployed: “That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.”

psalms. Once the monastic tradition was established, the whole day became structured around the praying of the psalms, known today as the liturgy of the hours. On a regular basis, all 150 psalms were recited in a structured sequence. Other Christians wishing to imitate this spirituality were often hampered by their inability to read or memorize the psalms. As time went by, Christians wishing to participate in this monastic prayer tradition began reciting prayers they knew by heart such as the Our Father and the Hail Mary. They kept track of their prayers either with pebbles or with knots tied in a rope. This form of prayer became known as the “poor person’s Psalter.” Eventually the prayer tracking took the form of a string of beads. Later, the focus of the prayer led to meditation on the events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. In this way, the current practice of meditating on various mysteries of the rosary developed. With that have a safe and wonderful October. GK Lawrence (Larry) Lenhardt, [email protected]

Fourth Degree News From Your Faithful Navigator

Sir Knights and Ladies,

October has arrived. The leaves are falling and soon the air should become crisp. Halloween decorations are popping out along our neighborhoods streets. Something I enjoy seeing! The officers enjoyed another meeting on Monday, Sept. 25th. We discussed the Chalice sent off on its journey, a status report of Operation Archangel, potentially helping in distribution of “Buddy Poppies”, and the upcoming Fourth Degree Eastern District Meeting. Special thanks to SK Don Grimm who will take on a calling list in October. We appreciate his willingness to come forward. Thanks as well to Sir Knights Bob Jeske, Andy Hughes, Larry Lenhardt, and Jim Schnell who helped make Operation Archangel a success. Sheboygan’s Catholic Parish based Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts did a great job distributing tootsie pops and collecting free will donations. The numbers continue to come in, but the proceeds currently exceed $700. Anyone individual who wishes to make a donation to Rawhide should see SK Larry Lenhardt. The assembly will match up to the first $200 to Rawhide. Fourth Degree Prayer Needs: Marge & Don Grimm, Francis Sr. & Charlene Goettl, Diane Nett The next Assembly 1204 Membership Meeting takes place on Wednesday, October 18th at Millhome Supper Club. Campus Corner - CCA The school year is off and running, classes began September 5. Our current enrollment is 157 students. We welcome some wonderful new faces to the CCA staff: Mrs. Erika Gould, our 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Selena Brusse, our 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Paula Harder, our music and band director, and Mrs. Laurie Hylen, our physical education teacher . Mrs. Emily (Onsager) Hoffmann, our former 4th grade teacher has moved to kindergarten. We are looking forward to a faith-filled school year! The Christ Child Academy Student Service Council will once again be collecting coats for the annual Coats for Kids Drive. Any gently used coats, hats, gloves, or scarves can be dropped off in the barrel at the school’s main entrance or in the Immaculate Conception Gathering Space, now through October 23rd. In particular, there is a great need for children’s coats. Boots are no longer requested. This is a great way to be a blessing to others in the community as well as teaching your children the joy of giving. Thanks for your support! Christ Child Academy is once again participating in the following collection programs this school year: Box Tops for Education Kwik Trip Milk Moola milk caps only We would like to thank you for your continued support in collecting the above items for our school. Friday, September 22, the CCA 5th grade class, along with 5th graders from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John the Baptist, and Shepherd of the Hills went to Camp Y-Koda for a day of outdoor activities with spiritual and team building exercises. The Sheboygan Fire Department will be conducting safety and fire prevention education for Kindergarten through 4th grade during the months of September and October. The education program is valuable for reinforcement of fire safety messages for children as they grow and develop safe behaviors. Christ Child is excited to be partnering this year with the Saint Peter Claver Food Pantry. Our 5th-8th graders will be taking turns once every month to help with the distribution at the pantry. This is a wonderful way to have our students really get involved in the work of caring for others. Please pray for our success in this new mission.
