Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter is a south-ern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives and a Mississippi town upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. It turns out they have a lot to say! Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before every-one in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly — and unwillingly — caught up in the changing times.

It has been a very eventful and busy time during the 2018 Virginia General Assembly. Your Bon Secours advocacy team has been engaged on a number of

meaningful and important healthcare issues. Our most meaningful and important issue that will impact so many of our Bon Secours patients is Medicaid Expansion as a component of the 2018 Virginia Budget.

As you may recall, the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010 expanded the number of Virginians that were eli-gible for access to health care insurance by more than 300,000 Virginians, subject to state legislative approval. For the last 5 years, the Virginia General Assembly has not approved the expansion of these benefits.

I have very good news for everyone as supporters of Bon Secours and the hundreds of thousands of unin-sured Virginians. After a prolonged, and sometimes, contentious debate in the General Assembly this year, Medicaid expansion is a reality. On June 7th, Governor Ralph Northam signed into law a budget that includes Medicaid Expansion.

This budget language directs Virginia Health Secretary Carey to apply to the Federal Government for waivers to begin applying for coverage for more than 300,000 pre-

viously uninsured Virginians to be covered by Medicaid. The meaningful part of this new coverage is that our Bon Secours ministry is able to fulfill our mission to pro-vide care and coverage to all Virginians in need of care, regardless of their ability to pay.

Beginning January 1, 2019, Virginia will begin receiv-ing Federal reimbursement for 90 percent of the cost of all newly eligible Virginians that fall below the Federal Poverty Level of $17,000 for access to health care. Virginia is the 33rd state to approve this expanded coverage.

Bon Secours will continue to support the increase in access to healthcare for everyone. It is our Mission and it is the right thing to do.

Thank you all for your steadfast support of this issue as we continue to provide care to the most needy in our communities.

Did You Know…1 in 4 Virginians has missing money! The Virginia Department of Treasury Unclaimed Property Division is returning property to the rightful owner. VA Money Search, one of the SeniorHealth Successful Aging Forum exhibitors, met with some of our participants and discovered they had approximately $13,000 in unclaimed money and property. Some of this may have been from long-forgotten bank accounts, insurance policies, etc. Check out their website at www.vamoneysearch.org to see if they might have something for you!

This year’s Successful Aging Forum was a big success. With over 400 seniors in attendance, we celebrated the past and embraced the future with laughter, music and dancing. Our wonderful exhibitors provided a wealth of information and we even had a special visit from United Healthcare’s mascot “Dr. Healthy Hound.”

Our keynote speaker, comedian Chonda Pierce, was hilarious and had everyone rolling with laughter. She spoke about grow-ing up as a daughter of a Southern Baptist preacher and all that came along with it, but her story about wearing Spanx, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, and the USO show was hysterical. “She had me laughing so hard I was crying,” said Joanne Merinar. Chonda finished with a wonderful rendition of Natural, or rather Un-Natural, Woman that only she could do. Again, it was hilari-ous and oh so true!

After a delicious lunch, we kicked off our Cotillion with the crown-ing of our Cotillion King and Queen, Sam Kimble and Dottie Blacklock and then enjoyed an afternoon of music and danc-ing with the fabulous Glenn Boswick and the Sounds of Swing Orchestra.

The day ended with door prizes generously donated by our exhibitors, many smiles and lasting memories for everyone in attendance.

Be sure to visit our website and Facebook page to see pictures from this year’s event and watch for information on Successful Aging Forum 2019 in upcoming issues of GoodHealth Magazine. We look forward to seeing you there!

Bon Secours has named Paul Gaden as the chief executive officer to oversee operations for Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth and Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk. Gaden will also serve as the executive leader for surgical services across Bon Secours Virginia to coordinate services state-wide. He joined the Bon Secours team on April 2, 2018, and reports directly to Amy Carrier, the newly appointed COO for Bon Secours Virginia. “Paul is an inspirational and results-oriented leader who has a demonstrated history of success in his many roles in health care,” said Toni R. Ardabell, CEO, Bon Secours Virginia. “His knowledge of health care strategy, finance and operations, in addition to his understanding of Bon Secours and the Hampton Roads region, makes him an outstanding choice to lead our efforts at Maryview and DePaul to be facilities of choice in Hampton Roads.” By creating this new executive role and the new COO role, Ardabell believes Bon Secours Virginia will have the opportunity to improve operations and reduce the cost of care while providing high quality compassionate care. Gaden said, “I am looking forward to returning to Bon Secours and the Hampton Roads community. It’s a great honor to lead hospitals with a rich history and commit-

ment to providing excep-tional, personalized care and to improving the overall health of the com-munities they serve.” Gaden returns to Bon Secours and to the Hampton Roads commu-nity after serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Providence Portland Medical Center and Oregon Eastern Region. He previously worked for Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian as the Finance Manager and was the Director of Finance for Sentara Norfolk General in Norfolk. Gaden transitioned from finance to operations while working with the Christus Spohn Health System where he served as chief operating officer for three of their facilities. Gaden holds a bachelor of science in finance from Pennsylvania State University and a master of business administration from William and Mary.

In late April, Amy Carrier joined Bon Secours as the chief operating officer of Bon Secours Virginia, a newly created leader-ship role designed to streamline operations and encourage growth across the ministry. She oversees acute care operations in the health system’s eight hospitals, with the hospi-

tal CEOs reporting to Carrier. Carrier reports directly to Toni R. Ardabell, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia. “Amy brings a diverse background in strategic busi-ness development and operations, and I am delighted she will be joining our team,” said Toni R. Ardabell. “Bon Secours is growing and adapting to the rapidly paced changes in health care, and this new leadership role will help us create efficiencies and growth opportunities on

a state-wide basis.” By creating this new executive role, Ardabell is seek-ing ways to achieve operational transformation across Virginia, leveraging the opportunities that standardiza-tion can create to improve operations and reduce costs, while delivering quality, compassionate care. Carrier was selected following a national search that resulted in a competitive field of qualified candidates. Prior to joining Bon Secours, Carrier was senior vice president and hospital president of WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, GA., which is part of the WellStar Health System based in Marietta, GA. She also previous-ly served as vice president and chief operating officer at Washington Adventist Hospital, Conemaugh Health System in Pennsylvania, Inova Fairfax Hospital and George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates. Carrier holds a bachelor of arts in labor and industrial relations from Pennsylvania State University and a mas-ter of business administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
