This past week we started our money management series called ‘Making the Most of It’ which will hopefully give us the tools to understand better our responsibility of giving back to God, saving, spending, debt reduction, and helping those in need.
We shared the difference between a tithe and an offering. The tithe being a certain percentage of your income going directly to the church so God’s storehouse would be full and an offering being anything above your tithe going to some other type of special ministry or need. We talked about the OT requirement of 10% of our “first fruits” going back to God and the NT standard of giving being done with generosity and a spirit of cheerfulness.
In the OT we learned of the different attitude and heart of giving through two brothers mentioned in Gen 4. Cain went around his fields and picked up the crops that fell to the ground and gave those leftovers to God and Able gave the fat portions of the first born of his flocks--his best to God. And in Hebrews 11:4 it says, “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain…” God blessed Abel and Cain got ‘very angry’ and killed his brother. Then God asked Cain, “Why are you angry and downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”
Now why do you think God said that to him? Well, God wants our best, the “first fruits” of everything He has blessed us with. I don’t think that is too much for God to ask from us who gave us life. He asks for 10% in the OT and in the NT that standard is increased but you get to decide with a cheerful attitude.
Don’t give with a Cain attitude but with a heart of sacrifice like Abel and watch and experience God blessing you beyond your understanding. Remember that your ‘tithing’ is an act of worship and response to your devotion and appreciation to God. He will in some way return those gifts back to you. As that billboard said, “George Jones Taxidermist—either way you’ll get your dog back!”
It all comes down to trust. Do you trust God to be faithful? Do you believe that 90% will go farther with God’s blessing than 100% will without His blessing?
Saved to Serve, Tim
Have you ever been stuck?
Several years ago my wife and I were coming to Texas from Missouri for Christmas and as we neared the Texas/Oklahoma state line the weather became more and more displeasing. Snow mixed with ice was slowly coating the roads though my inexperience could not tell. My truck was losing more and more weight with the use of gas, but I did not slow down as my brilliant wife had cautioned. As I sped around other cars much more cautious the back end of my truck broke loose for just a moment and I suddenly found myself drifting into the wide median with a foot of snow built up. We came to a nice calm stop without any damage to Christina or myself, or more importantly the truck. But we did find ourselves stuck; I especially stuck with my wife peering over at me with a “told you so” look.
The Bible tells us that man is stuck before God. God is in need of something that will make up for our short comings, our sin. Man is in need of a heavenly gift in earthly form. From the very beginning of sin’s entrance to the world God has sought blood that could atone for sin.
In the Old Testament the Israelite people would take a day each year to seek God’s forgiveness, and the High Priest would walk into the Most Holy Place and come face to face with God…armed only with…blood. The High Priest was not perfect, and often their misdeeds are well documented. But, if they walked in with the perfect blood, just as God had required, God would find their offering acceptable. It was the blood that God was interested in.
However, the High Priest could never offer up blood that was all sufficient. That is why there continued to be more and more sacrifices and more and more blood spilled before God, until…the cross. While on the cross, Christ offered up his perfect blood. If the blood was not acceptable, it would have accomplished as much as the blood of the thieves to either side. However, the blood was extraordinary, not the typical blood of a typical man. This blood was perfect; pure; without blemish. This blood is satisfactory, truly the sacrifice that God had been looking for all along.
But, we must also recognize that the blood is satisfactory for us as well. Since the blood is good enough for God, is must also be good enough for us. Christ’s blood is special to us, not just because of the forgiveness we receive from it, but because of the clear conscience we receive from it. The blood does not make us pure just as it didn’t make the people pure during the Passover. But the blood does give us salvation. And having the blood of Christ gives us the opportunity to also approach God, not just once a year with fear and trembling through another person as on the Day of Atonement, but we may approach God any time with complete confidence with Christ’s blood in tow.
Thank God for the blood of Christ, which sets us free. ~ Ben

COMING IN MAY IN KIDZ
Think about this for a second: Do you want your children to grow up to be angry? I’m talking about out-of-control, self-centered, short-fused, “I’m gonna hurt somebody if I don’t get my way” kind of anger. Of course not.
After all, you don’t have to look very hard in communities to see the damage that kind of an-ger can do. It’s the reason a lady used pepper spray at a Wal-Mart to ward off a crowd of
mothers Christmas shopping. It’s the reason people lose it in traffic, or the reason the issue of bullying is escalating in schools everywhere. The truth is there are a lot of people who are walking around angry. Somehow they grew up and missed a simple principle that is critical to life. Peace.
Peace is part of God’s character and what Jesus came to do for us. God wants us to reflect peace in our relationships with others. We define peace like this: proving you care more about each other than about winning an argument. It’s interesting that peace almost always requires some type of sacrifice. I can almost guarantee there will be a time in every relationship when you will have to give up something you care about to make peace. Peace will cost you something.
When sin entered God’s magnificent paradise, our relationship with Him was broken. God’s love for us was so great that He was willing to sacrifice to restore the relationship. God proved He cared about peace when He sent His Son to pay for our sins. Peace is more than just “not fighting” and saying the right things to keep people happy. Peace is living in a way that shows you care more about others than about being right. It’s about building strong relationships through mutual trust.
Working at those relationships is hard work. It will cost us something. It will take time, swallowing our pride, and often will mean walking away from the chance to prove we’re “right.” That’s why we start by getting everyone to memorize something Paul said in the book of Romans. “So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up,” (Romans 14:19, NIrV)
Think about the significance of that phrase. Paul is challenging us to do all we can to live in peace. He stresses how important it is for us to do everything in our power to build a bridge—to fix what is broken—between us and someone else.

Dr. James Dobson's Parenting Devotion
Helping Hands “You became imitators of us and of the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 1:6
I already knew that children are prone to imitate their parents, but it was the “Siggie shave” incident that brought this fact home to me.
Danae was two years old the first time she noticed Jim shaving in the morning. She was fascinated and watched every detail as he soaped his face and applied a razor to his skin. We should have known that Danae would try what she had seen. The next morning, I came into the bathroom and hardly recognized our dachshund, Siggie, who was sitting in his favorite spot on the furry lid of the toilet seat. Danae had covered his head with lather and was systematically shaving the hair from his shiny skull! I screamed, “Danae!” which sent Siggie and his barber scurrying for safety. It was strange to see our frightened dog with nothing but ears sticking up on the top of his bald head.
Our kids’ tendency to imitate provides an opportunity for their parents to teach them. Invite your children into the kitchen when you are preparing breakfast, explain what you are doing, and allow them to stir the pancake batter. Teach them how to fold the clothes from the dryer. Show them how to mow the lawn. Demonstrate how to scrub away the dirt on the doors and windows of your car when it’s time for a wash. Then bow your head to thank God for giving your family food to eat, clothes to wear, and a place to live. In this way you teach your children, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
It’s true that you may not finish your daily duties as quickly with the “help” of little hands, but showing your children how to properly com-plete tasks at home—especially when handled in a positive, fun manner—can give them a wonderful sense of accomplishment, help them develop good attitudes about work, and create an enriching time for the whole family. You’ll be setting an example that will benefit your children and yourself in the years ahead. -Shirley M. Dobson
99 THOUGHTS FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS THE TRUTH ON RAISING TEENAGERS FROM PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE
By Walt Mueller
The World of Youth Culture Shapes Kids in Powerful Ways Every day, marketers and media makers drop a new load of stuff into the world of your teenagers. Because your children are growing through change-filled adolescent years that leave them questioning anything and everything about life, they’re incredibly vulnerable to this stuff’s ability to serve as a map, shaping their values, attitudes, and behaviors. As a result, growing up has become more difficult and confusing. There are new problems, pres-sures, choices, challenges and expectations that are more complex than ever before. It’s a different world from the world we grew up in. To help your teenager navigate their way through this rapidly changing youth culture according to God’s map, you need to work hard to keep abreast of these rapid changes. If you don’t, the cultural and generational gap that exists between you and your teenagers will only grow, making it difficult to effectively communicate, love, and parent. Keep your eyes and ears open so you can stay culturally informed. (We can help you do that at the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding; visit cpyu.org for daily updates on today’s youth culture.)
330 Middle School Wednesday Nights TEACHING SERIES: HOOKED
Starting: April 29 2015 at 6:45 pm in the Student Center
When it comes to junk food, nearly everyone has a weak spot. Maybe for you, it’s the perfect salty bag of chips. Or maybe it’s beef jerky or those tiny pizza rolls. Maybe you have a sweet tooth and you just can’t pass on ice cream or cookies… or both. Whatever it is, we all have something that taps into our weak spot, our cravings. When it’s around us, we just can’t seem to help ourselves. And it’s more than just junk food, right? That “gotta-have-it-right-now” temptation can pop up in a lot of different areas. Gossip. Movies. Spend-ing money. Sex… Temptation is everywhere. But what are we supposed to do about it? Most of us know that giving in never makes our lives better, so what is it about the things that tempt us that makes us feel so pow-erless to say no? Thankfully, Scripture has a lot to say when it comes to temptation. And while there’s no promise that it will ever go away, we can find the courage to resist it, replace it, and avoid getting hooked.
Session One: Bait & Switch Bottom Line: Look for the hook. Session Two: The Cookie Jar Bottom Line: God cares more about what we embrace than what we avoid.

Although, the youth are not collecting cans anymore, Lisa Fair is collecting them for a local 501(3)c organization. They will take pop cans, veggie/soup cans, dog/cat food cans...any type of can. Place clean, label free cans in or out-side Lisa’s office.
If you have something to advertise under Community Connections, contact the church office with the info.

Did you know that each month, volunteers go to Hope Ministries to throw birthday parties for the children re-siding at the Mission? If interested in helping out contact [email protected].
We already have one of our church’s small groups in-volved in this great experience.
Each school year, NLCS collects individually wrapped
snacks, to package snack packs for The Ronald McDon-
ald Family Room. If you're not familiar, the family room
offers a peaceful refuge for parents and families of criti-
cally ill children. This spring the kiddos are looking to
beat last year's total, and have set their goal of 3,600
snacks. If you are able to help them reach their goal, it
would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
Did you know with only 4 hours to spare a week you can help save lives? Pet Refuge is currently in search of volunteers (18 and over) to help in our dog department taking care of our residents. They did not choose to be there and they cannot take care of themselves. Your week-ly commitment will consist of about 1 hour of cleaning / feeding and the rest of the time playing, walking and socializing with the dogs. We all waste 4 hours a week one way or another, why not putting that time to good use, we promise it will not be a waste!
