We have started a new series from Luke 7-8 about Jesus being a certain kind of friend. And as we study these relationships, hopefully we’ll come to know Jesus more intimately as our own personal friend. But it’s important for us to understand that while the Lord loves every person,
there is a qualifier to his friendship. In James 4:4 it says, “Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” He’s talking about buying into the world’s moral and philosophical view rather than a biblical world view. Trusting what the world has to offer instead of trusting God.
We first talked about Jesus being a friend to believers and the story line came from Luke 7:1-10 where it talks about the centurion’s servant being ill. This centurion came to know the Lord and believed that Jesus could heal his servant from a distance. “Just say the word Lord and it will be done.” When Jesus heard this from a Roman centurion, Jesus turned to the crowd of Jews and the Bible says, “…he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’”
So Jesus is truly a friend to those who believe in him as Lord. Then last week we talked about him being a friend to those who are hurting (Luke 7:11-17). Here we find Jesus showing compassion to a woman who was already a widow and now has lost her only son. He’s entering the city that took on the form of a parade and they have a head on collision with this woman leaving the city in a funeral procession. But Jesus takes notice and brings her only son back to life. He demonstrates that he is a friend to those who are hurting.
Church family, Jesus is a compassionate friend because he doesn’t just comfort us in our hurts; he’s going to cure the problem. You and I will have pain in this world but we also know the end of the story. We know that no matter what happens here, we will be raised to life just like this young man.
Saved to Serve, Tim
“…The fire must be kept burning on the altar.”
“The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out.”
“The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.”
These words are pieces of instruction to the priest on how to officiate a ceremonial burnt offering to God found in Leviticus 6:8-13.
This section explains how to take care of the altar, what to do with the fire, what to do with the ashes, and even what to wear for each of
these different responsibilities. Leviticus gives more instructions on burnt offerings in chapter 1. It says that the animal must be
without defect. The person bringing the animal, whether bull, sheep, or goat, is to slaughter the animal themselves, before handing it
over to the priest. The priest then skins and cuts the animal into pieces before putting every bit of the animal up on to the altar. Every
part of the animal was to be burnt.
All day, every day, the job of the priest was never done. As long as people sinned there were offerings to be given. The priest was
more closely related to a butcher than what we think of as a minister or priest in our modern times.
You probably haven’t seen too many pictures or paintings depicting the burnt offerings of the Old Testament. They weren’t exactly
family friendly. Yet Paul takes it a step further in Romans 12:1 when he urges us to “offer our bodies as living sacrifices.” No doubt
Paul was very familiar with the Jewish offerings system, and he most likely had done his fair share of participation. Yet he tells us to
offer ourselves as if we were the sacrifice. One way of understanding this text is that we should “spiritually” look like slaughtered,
burnt animals. We should sacrifice ourselves and live the rest of our lives as a testimony, making it above obvious to those around us
that we are not living for ourselves. A second idea can be seen on the ranch my grandparents had for so many years. Every year we
would take a steer to the butcher to provide the meat for the next year. It was odd and somewhat creepy in my young mind to be staring
at my dinner out in the corral. Suddenly dinner got more personal, especially when my sister decided to begin naming them. With all
that said, a steer patiently and unknowingly eating in the corral is a “living” sacrifice. It is waiting out its days when it will be sacrificed
for someone else. We should live out our lives patiently waiting for the day when we can sacrifice for others. We should be perceptive
enough to notice when others need our help, and willing to be “slaughtered” for the good of another.
One last thought. God loves barbecue. In Leviticus 1:9, 13, and 17, it says that the burnt offerings are “an aroma pleasing to the Lord.”
God loves to see his people make sacrifices for him and too him, it is our “spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1). I love the smell of
meat cooking, but even more I love the “smell” of God’s people doing his work.
Grace and Peace, Ben

99 THOUGHTS FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS THE TRUTH ON RAISING TEENAGERS FROM PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE
By Walt Mueller
LIVE UNDER AND PROCLAIM THE AUTHORITY OF GOD’S WORD Have you ever thought about how and why we make the decisions we make? Every decision we make is based on some authority. Same thing goes for
our children. It’s highly likely that your teenagers, like most teenagers, rely unconsciously on some combination of authorities including peers, family,
the media, and their feelings. While all of these authorities can lead us in the right direction and to good decisions , there is one primary authority we are
to live in conscious submission to. It’s the authority of the One who formed us, made us, and desires us to find our rightful place in life in a relationship
with Him. Perhaps the greatest parental responsibility we have is to teach - through our words and example - that all of life is to be lived under the
authority of God. Our own eyes, ears, and live must be focused on Jesus, who said, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth” ( Matthew
28:18), and on God’s revelation of himself in the Bible, which is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is
wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16). If this is the authority we live under, we’ll be
teaching the truth about their need to do the same.
