Dear Friends,
As most of you have heard, during the months of July and August we are experimenting with having one ser-vice on Sunday mornings. During July we will be alternating between the two current formats: Traditional and Celebration. During August the two worship teams will work together to plan a more integrated worship expe-rience.
These two months are an experiment to begin to see whether having a single service on Sunday would be ad-vantageous on a continuing basis. There are advantages to both options: having two services or one.
Having two services allows us to offer a greater variety of worship experience, to accommodate a broader spectrum of tastes. And with a small sanctuary, having all of us together can make the space seem crowded and unwelcoming to visitors. Having two services allows more room for growth.
Having one service allows us all to worship together, to have a common experience of worship. And with de-creasing attendance at the early service, it stretches our volunteers to continue with two services. Having one consolidates our efforts. One service also allows for adult Christian education on Sunday morning, something that is very challenging with two services.
During these two months, we’ll be taking some time in worship to have a conversation about what makes wor-ship meaningful. Whether we choose to have one or two services going forward, this conversation will help us to cue into the Spirit’s promptings. As we see what comes forth, I will consult with the Board and with our worship leaders to decide what to do in September, whether to return to two services, move ahead with one, or continue the conversation in some other form.
Thank you for your generous spirits in this process. Considering change is always disruptive. I trust that to-gether we can hear the Spirit’s guidance.
Your servant in Christ,
+Pastor David

Here’s some information about John Nilsen, who will be in worship on July 22. Pastor David will be away that Sunday.
John Nilsen Short Bio 2017
John Nilsen was born in Seattle, Washington in 1956. The Nilsen family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1960.
Nilsen began studying classical piano from his mother at age six. Continuing his musical education, he began
playing guitar at age fourteen. John moved to Ashland, Oregon in 1974 to attend Southern Oregon College
(Southern Oregon University). Nilsen graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and was honored
by the institution in 1995 in recognition of his outstanding achievements, dedicated efforts and leadership in
the field of the performing arts with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the most prestigious award bestowed
upon Southern Oregon University graduates.
An accomplished pianist, guitarist, songwriter, lyricist and vocalist, Nilsen was chosen to be a Deering Banjo
Artist in 2016. Nilsen founded the Magic Wing recording label in 1987. The label has a catalog of nineteen
successful titles, each with international distribution. Before founding Magic Wing, John recorded three suc-
cessful solo piano records on LA’s, Eagle Records from 1983-1985. He has released sixteen on his own Magic
Wing label with fifteen other CDs licensed in countries including Germany, Great Britain, The Philippines,
Canada, Taiwan and Singapore bringing reported total record sales to well over one million copies sold. Very
few independent recording artists can claim such success. Having performed in Europe, Asia and all fifty U.S.
States countless times, John Nilsen has two hundred and fifty of his compositions and musical arrangements
receiving BMI royalties world wide.
John Nilsen’s newest release, Local Ocean, was released in January, 2017. Sessions for the 20th Nilsen record-
ing will begin in summer, 2017. Like each of the past twenty five years, John played two hundred and fifty per-
formances in 2016, most being out of Oregon. Nilsen splits his performances between touring nationally as an
in demand pianist with a national presence, performing with the John Nilsen Trio, featuring Jeff Leonard/bass
and Jason Moore/percussion and which has toured internationally, and with John’s guitar/ vocal rock band,
John Nilsen & SWIMFISH, featuring Dave Captein, Mike Snyder, Bob Logue and Don Woodward. SWIM-
FISH includes John’s piano, but features his rock solid acoustic and electric guitar chops tucked into and soar-
ing above a bed of a uniquely great supporting cast. John has given back to his community by teaching song-
writing residencies and speaking to students in schools throughout the country, but also including every school
in the West Linn/Wilsonville School District over the past twenty years.

July & August Worship Services
During the month of July, worship will alternate between our two services:
July 1st & 29th are Celebration, July 8th & 15th are Traditional
(July 1st & 15th are Communion)
During August a single format that will work well for the whole congregation is being worked
on. This is not a final decision about future worship services. Let’s just try this out and see what
we can learn. — Pastor David
This Summer Pastor David is preaching a Summer of Saints.
Our Summer of Saints will introduce us to three different biblical Marys, apostles like Peter,
Paul, James, and Barnabas, and even some more contemporary figures.
