RIDEWELL INTRODUCTION 2

Vintage WoodtypeRidewell is a wood type inspired typeface filled with amazing opentype features. It has a wonderfully warm and letterpress vintage look and it comes in two styles, a regular and a printed/weathered version.

Both styles feature a full uppercase and lowercase set but also a variety of opentype goodies that make Ridewell unique and expand each style into a huge superset. With over 1800 glyphs per style you can take full advantage of stylistic alternates (titling alternates in Adobe InDesign), contextual alternates, discretionary ligatures, ligatures, numerators, denominators and many more to create your own designs. The combinations are just endless.

Ridewell comes in opentype TTF format and supports Western, Central and Eastern European languages.

Ridewell supports a variety of opentype features giving you alternative letter combinations.

RIDEWELL GUIDE

Using opentypeIn order to use all of Ridewell’s features you will need an opentype savvy program such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, CorelDraw and Quark XPress. The fol-lowing exaples are for Adobe Illustrator, but they will work the same in any other program.

LET’S STARTLet’s start by a single word set in Uppercase. You will need to open your Opentype and Character Panels from window>type>. For starters be sure to have everything deacti-vated and the Position set to Default Position.

STYLISTIC ALTERNATES (SALT)With the text selected, activating Stylistic Alter-nates (Titling Alternates in InDesgin) makes the alter-native glyphs come up, like R & L in the example.

(See the full glyph for a complete list of all the alternative glyphs.)

DISCRETIONARY LIGATURES (DLIG)By activating Discretion-ary Ligatures you access the second set of alter-nates.

(Remember to keep the text selected and to deactivate the Stylistic Alternates.)

CONTEXTUAL ALTERNATES (CALT)By activating Contextual Alternates you access the third set of alternates, like the WE you see in the ex-ample.

(Remember to deactivate the Discretionary Ligatures.)

DLIG & SALT By activating both Discre-tionary Ligatures and Sty-listic Alternates you access the second set of alter-nates plus the alternates of the second set (fourth set) for the combination of glyphs that exist – in this case RI and LL.

TAKE CONTROLLet’s start by a single word again. Select the word and be sure to deactivate all of the opentype features.

Using your type tool select R and I and activate Dis-cretionary Ligatures and Stylistic Alternates.

RIDEWELL GUIDE

Move on and select D and E and activate Discretion-ary Ligatures.

Now select W and E and activate Contextual Alter-nate.

Finally select the LL and activate again the Dis-cretionary Ligatures and Stylistic Alternates.

You can try different letter combinations and see what happens, or just browse through the full character set and select the glyphs you want to use.

DENOMINATORSAgain, select the whole text and click on the flyout menu Position and choose Denominators. The Numerator and Denomi-nator glyphs are the same (except from the letter G) and it’s their position rela-tively to the baseline that changes.

LOWERCASESet a word in lowercase. Open your Character Panel (window>type>character).

NUMERATORSSelect the whole text and click on the flyout menu Position and choose Nu-merator.

SMALL CAPSFrom the flyout menu on the top right of the panel activate Small Caps.

Avoid activating the Standard Ligatures, when setting type in Uppercase, or else you may get un-wanted results.

STANDAR LIGATURES MAGICThere are three ways to access the preset words (and, since, from, to, etc.) Start by typing a word in lowerace.

STANDAR LIGATURESWhen setting type in low-ercase, and you want to activate the Standard Liga-tures from the Opentype Panel – ffi in this example, choose only these charac-ters.

If you activate the Stand-ard Ligatures you get the lowercase word.

RIDEWELL GUIDE

To get the second Upper-case word variation you have to set the word in Uppercase.

If you now switch on the standard ligatures from the Opentype Panel, you’ll access the second Upper-case word.

Now if you switch on Small Caps from the Character Panel you’ll access the first Uppercase word variation.

There are two more Up-percase alternatives (dif-ferent character heights) which can be accessed through the window> type>

glyphs panel in Illustrator (or the character panel> opentype> stylistic sets> set1 & set2 in InDesign). Select SS01 from Show flyout. Double click on any glyph to insert it in your text.

Similar way, select SS02 from Show flyout. Double click on any glyph to insert it in your text.

This is how all the Up-percase variations relate to each other. From left to right: Uppercase, Small Caps, SS01, SS02, Numera-tor, Denominator.

HEIGHTSSo far we’ve covered the Uppercase, lowercase and small caps. Here you can see the Uppercase and Small Caps R.
