  • TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS - ESCALATORS 1.00 SCOPE OF WORK The complete supply, delivery, installation (including all the associated skilled/unskilled labour and the hire of any mobile cranes for offloading purposes) testing and commissioning of (number) escalators. 2.00 DUTY OF ESCALATORS The escalators shall be proven in use in a public service environment and shall be capable of operating continuously for a period of 12 to 16 hours for 6 days each week throughout a year. 3.00 DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION The tenderer shall be required to visit site and establish an area for unloading of the escalators and a feasible route for installation of the escalators from the off loading area to their final location. The tenderer shall submit with his tender full details of all the work necessary to enable such a route to be established. 4.00 GENERAL SPECIFICATION The whole of the equipment shall be in accordance with the latest edition of EN 115. It shall also be in accordance with the requirements of this specification where these requirements exceed those of the EN standard. 4.01 GENERAL DESIGN 4.01.1) Inclination: (30 or 35) 4.01.2) Vertical Height Rise: (2.0m~7.0m, exceeding 6m for 30 only) 4.01.3) Step Width: (800mm or 1000mm) 4.01.4) Step Speed: 0.5 metres/second 4.02 TRUSS AND SIDE CLADDING The escalator trusses shall be designed to accommodate the loadings and factors referred to in the latest edition of EN 115. The trusses shall not deflect greater than 1:750 of the distance between supports. The trusses shall be constructed of rolled steel sections, continuously welded where appropriate, and treated with an approved rust inhibitor. The trusses shall include all the frames, supports and reinforcements as necessary for the support and fastening of the mechanical parts of the escalators. There shall be no cross members on the soffit of the truss, either inside or outside. The truss supports at each end shall be fitted with anti-vibration pads to prevent vibration and noise being transmitted to the building structure. All the necessary steelwork, trimming angles and bearing plates to support the escalators from the building structure are to be provided and fitted by the building contractor. Sheet steel cladding to exposed sides of the truss is to be provided of an adequate gauge to avoid distortion. The cladding shall be designed to give a good visual appearance without joints and all the fixings shall be concealed. The cladding shall be painted as described for the truss and suitably primed, for final decoration by others.

  • 4.03 ESCALATOR DRIVE The drive unit shall be located at the upper end of the escalator and shall consist of a heavy duty compact gear with a motor flange mounted on to the gearbox. The step chain drive wheels shall be driven by either a planet reduction gear or a combined worm and wheel together with a helical reduction gear and be totally enclosed and run in an oil bath. The drive unit shall be positive and quiet. Details of drive efficiency to be submitted with tender. 4.04 DRIVE MOTOR The drive motor shall be continuously rated and of adequate size for the duty concerned in both directions of travel. The drive shall be positive and quiet. The tenderer shall include details of the motor within the tender. The tenderer shall include within the tender a list of protection provided, which shall be preferably by means of temperature sensitive devices in the motor windings with a magnetically operated overload device to cater for stall conditions. 4.05 BRAKE The escalator shall have a fail safe operational braking system which shall be capable of bringing an unloaded and loaded escalator to reset within the stopping distances given in the latest edition of EN 115 and maintaining it stationary. The action of the brake shall be smooth so that the step band is brought to a standstill without subjecting the passengers to sudden deceleration forces. The brake shall be held off electrically and applied by spring pressure. Provision shall be made for the temporary release of the brake by means of a manually operated release lever. The escalator shall stop automatically in the event of the operation of any safety device or electrical power failure. Each escalator shall have the facility to lock the step band in position to enable work to be carried out safely within the step band. 4.06 HANDRAIL DRIVE To ensure the handrail runs synchronously with the step band a direct gear drive from the main drive shaft shall be used. A positive drive and proper tensioning of the handrail shall be achieved at all times. The handrail should not be tensioned for the purpose of driving. At the newel ends there shall be adequate sized rollers to guide the handrail around the newels. Each roller shall be fitted with sealed ball bearings and be grease lubricated. 4.07 HANDRAILS The endless rubber handrails shall be pre-stretched and provided with a nylon lining on the running faces and suitably reinforced with steel or cord tension members to enhance service life. 4.08 STEP CHAINS The step chains shall be purposely designed for escalator applications and be of the roller type with heat treated links to satisfy the requirements of EN 115.

  • 4.09 STEP CHAIN TENSION A step chain tension device shall be provided in an easily accessible position, and shall be fitted with adjustable pressure springs to ensure uniform tension of the step chains. 4.10 STEPS The steps shall be of an interchangeable design of rigid high tensile die cast aluminium, incorporating grooved treadplates and risers, and shall be capable of being removed and replaced without removing the skirtings or inside balustrade. The step rollers shall have sealed ball bearings which are permanently grease lubricated. 4.11 STEP COMBS Step combs shall be manufactured from a durable material and be easily replaceable. The escalator must incorporate step guides of wear resistant material to ensure precise lateral entrance of the step into the comb. 4.12 SKIRTINGS Rigid skirting panels shall be provided adjacent to the steps, being treated with a long-wearing friction reduction compound and adequately supported to prevent bending or deflection. Flexible skirting panels with micro-switches shall not be accepted. 4.13 BRUSH GUARDS (Applicable to UK and Hong Kong only) Brush guards shall be provided to protect the step/skirting gap. They shall follow the nose line of the steps, running continuously throughout the length of the moving step band and terminating 50mm before the comb plates at both ends. At each end of the brush guard there shall be a smooth tapered aluminium leading piece to ensure that there are no sharp edges which may be a hazard to passengers. 4.14 FLOOR COVERING Single panel covers of aluminium and steel construction shall be provided at the escalator entrances, covered with ribbed aluminium flooring. The covers shall be removable for the purposes of maintenance. 4.15 BALUSTRADES The balustrades should be of clear toughened glass of the impact resistant type, the minimum thickness shall be 10mm, the panels shall be self supporting without the need of mullions. The panels shall be separated into standard lengths with the joints arranged at right-angles to the handrails. The vertical height of the balustrade, both on the incline and the ends, shall be 1000mm. 4.16 FINISHES The inner/outer deckings and the handrail profile shall be of natural anodised aluminium finish. The joints of all sections shall be of the flush butted type. 4.17 CONTROL CUBICLE The controller for the escalators shall be in a sheet metal cubicle located within the top machine compartment and should be removable. The controller shall incorporate all devices for controlling the direction of travel of the escalator and all overload and safety devices as specified in 4.18

  • 4.18 SAFETY DEVICES The escalators shall be equipped with the following safety devices:

    4.18.1) Emergency stop buttons (for public use) at the top and bottom entrance areas 4.18.2) Chain control in the return unit to stop the escalator in the event of elongation or breakage of the step chain. 4.18.3) Full motor protection combined with speed monitoring and anti-reversal of the step band. 4.18.4) Finger protection with contact at the handrail inlet at the balustrade heads. 4.18.5) Step inlet protection to stop the escalator in the event of objects getting between the comb teeth and the moving steps. 4.18.6) Step lowering device to switch off the escalator in the event of a step being lowered more than 5mm from its correct path. 4.18.7) Step return guards at both top and bottom ends to provide protection to/from the step band. 4.18.8) A locking device, with mechanical and electrical protection, to lock the step band in position for when it is necessary to work within the step band.

    4.19 WIRING This includes the laying of all cables and conductors from the main circuit breaker in the control cubicle to the individual controls, lighting, and safety devices inside the escalator. All the electrical installations material must be suitable for humid conditions. The cables, switching elements and electrical devices must be in accordance with CENELEC harmonised standards HD 21 and HD 22. 4.20 ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES A 400 volt 3 phase 4 wire 50 Hz supply shall be provided by others. This supply shall be terminated in a junction box positioned within the escalator truss adjacent to the control cabinet and be used for the main motive power required. The tenderer shall detail the load requirements of each supply and the preferred locations of the incoming cables at the time of tender. 4.21 CONTROL SWITCHES The control switch shall be mounted at the lower end of the escalator and shall be key operated. 4.22 BEARINGS All bearings of rotating shafts are of high quality, high precision, self aligning, ball or roller type as appropriate. All bearings are selected to give, under full contract load operating conditions, a minimum calculated design life of 100,000 (L10h) based on the ISO definition of life rating. 4.23 LUBRICATION The tenderer shall define the method of lubrication and state by what means oil and other debris is removed from the escalators at periodic intervals.

  • 4.24 NOTICES/SIGNS Two notices per escalator shall be provided by the escalator sub-contractor depicting the following:- Small children must be held firmly Dogs must be carried Stand facing the direction of travel: Keep feet away from sides. Hold moving handrails Whenever possible these notices shall be in pictograph form in accordance with the requirements of EN 115 The above notices shall be fitted on site by others. 4.25 DRAWINGS The drawing provided for the purpose of tendering shows typical escalators. It is appreciated that dimensions could vary as far as the size of the upper and lower compartments concerned. A dimensional drawing shall be submitted with the tender to indicate the size required by the unit included in the tender, together with all structural openings, and details of structural supports etc. 4.26 RECORDS The tenderer shall include for supplying two sets of record drawings and operating manuals on completion of the installation. 4.27 TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS The tenderer shall supply illustrated and technical publications relating to the equipment offered and any additional information requested within this document when submitting his tender. 4.28 SERVICING The tenderer shall specify the costs for providing a 20 year fully comprehensive maintenance contract. This contract shall be payable annually and shall be only adjusted in accordance with the appropriate national lift and escalator trade associations published indices figure.
