The fi rst automobiles appeared on Abbotsford Roadsc. 1910. Local laws demanded that if a horse and buggy approached, the car must pull over and the engine be turned off . Take your best shot

With summer-like weather providing great photo opportunities, there’s no better time to put your skills to use and submit your best shots to a contest being presented by London Drugs, Black Press and the Abbotsford International Airshow.

More than 1100 entries have already been entered for the third annual “Your Best Shot” contest for amateur photographers around B.C.

Photographers are encouraged to send in their favourite photos from the past 12 months.

Whether it’s an action-packed sports shot, a colourful scenic landscape or an amazing portrait, budding photographers are encouraged to send it in.

Contestants can submit up to five of their favourite photos for a chance to win some spectacular prizes.

the final competition. The winner of last year’s Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year award was Steve Dutt of Surrey. See video of top submissions at www.youtube.com/abbynews.

The winner of the 2013 Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year was Rod Jones of Abbotsford.

This year’s airshow will feature all-time favourite static and air displays, as well as the second annual twilight show complete with pyrotechnics.

Enter your photos at abbynews.com/contests.

The contest is now open and runs until July 3.

All photos will be judged by a panel of experts on subject, composition, impact and other criteria.

Finalists will receive full VIP access to the Abbotsford International Airshow, which runs Aug. 7 to 9, with preferred viewing to take photos of all the action.

They will also compete for more than $1,500 in prizes and the chance to be named the Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year.

Last year, Black Press received more than 2,000 entries for the Your Best Shot contest from amateur photographers from the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vancouver and communities around B.C.

Summer has a cool, funky, laid-back vibe that, in fashion, is best reflected in flowy looks and light fabrics that are just right for the weekend but can be dressed up for the office or other occasions.

Fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk are great choices for hot-weather days in prints that can be fun, romantic or both.

Florals are always a popular choice for this time of year. Try a shirt dress with flip flops for a casual

weekend look, or belt it and add some wedge heels for the office.

Geometrics prints are also on trend in vibrant combinations or in the more classic pairing of black and white.

For a bolder look, select a pair of striped socks to pair with your boyfriend jeans, or keep the colours neutral and go for a lightly layered look that can make the transition from spring into summer.

How to dye your hair unnatural coloursand make it last! There are lots of questions about dying hair unnatural colours. You’ll want to know what products to use and how to maintain the colour and keep it bright. If you follow these few simple tips, you’ll be on your way to the rainbow tresses of your dreams!

GET BLEACHED BY A PROFESSIONALHealthy hair is vital for long lasting co-lour. If your hair is damaged, the colour won’t hold. Unless you are blessed with naturally white blonde hair you will need to have your hair stripped by a profes-sional. Without a light base, the colour will look muddy and will wash out quick-ly. Everyone’s hair is different, so speak to your colourist. Ask for advice about how light you can realistically strip your hair without damaging it too much.

AVOID HEATWhenever possible, let your hair dry naturally and avoid using flat irons. Heat strips colour faster than anything else and is like kryptonite to delicate bleached hair.

DYE IT REGULARLYIf you’ve followed all the previous steps, you shouldn’t need to re-dye your hair more than every 3 or 4 weeks. Between appointments you can mix your colour with conditioner to keep it fresh. This works best on the more intense colours.

RINSE WITH COLD WATERHot water strips colour by opening up the hair cuticle, allowing the colour to escape. During your final rinse, turn the temperature of the shower as down as low as you can bear for a minute. Doing

this closes the cuticles, locks in colour and makes your hair extra shiny!

EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT BRANDSNot all dyes will work on everyone’s hair, so if you don’t have luck the first try, all is not lost! For a softer look, try mixing colour with conditioner.

Another trick for longer lasting colour is to leave the dye on for longer than recommended, often closer to an hour rather than the suggested 15-20 minutes. Leaving it on longer will makes the co-lour brighter and darker, but it then takes longer to fade, which is an added bonus.

All unnaturally coloured hair dyes (blue, pink, purple, green etc.) are semi-perma-nent, so your hair will fade no matter what you do. Fading is inevitable, but you should avoid getting your hair wet as much as possible.

cloudy days. You may not be safe indoors either, particularly if you spend a good deal of time next to an open window. Window glass will only block certain types of UV light, making sunburn pos-sible even if you are indoors or riding in a car. It’s a good habit to apply sunscreen daily regardless.

MYTH: Spray sunscreens are as effec-tive as the rest. Spray products may not deliver enough sunscreen to the skin because droplets are dispersed uneven-ly. Furthermore, the propellants used

in spray sunscreens could be harmful if inhaled. Opt for sunscreens that are applied by hand and can be adequately coated over all areas of the skin.

MYTH: Sunscreen does not need to be reapplied, especially if it’s water-re-sistant. There is no such thing as a wa-terproof sunscreen. Consumers falsely believe their sunscreen will not wash off. Water-resistant sunscreens will be effective for a certain number of minutes before they need to be reapplied, usually between 40 to 90 minutes. If you have been sweating profusely or have been in the pool or ocean for awhile, play it safe and reapply often.

MYTH: Spending more money on SPF 50 will get me superior protection. The rate of protection from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is marginal. SPF 30 (when applied cor-rectly) can protect against 97 percent of UVB rays. That’s adequate for many people. It’s most important to choose a sunscreen that protects against UVA AND UVB rays.

Be smart about sun exposure. Too much unprotected exposure to the sun can cause a host of problems, from premature wrinkling to skin cancer.

Although sunscreen is an enormous help, it is not foolproof. Sunburns and skin damage can occur even when using sunscreen, and ‘user error’ accounts for much of the damage. To get the bestresults from any sunscreen product, educate yourself about proper application and avoid certain information inaccuracies.

MYTH: The best sunscreen is the one with the highest SPF. Actually, the best sunscreen is the one you will use reg-ularly. Decide if you prefer a sunscreen that is combined with a moisturizer or a makeup foundation. Try sunscreens that are lotions or sticks to figure out which application works best for you. Once you’ve found a product you like, stick with it. But make sure the sunscreen has an adequate sun protection factor, or SPF.

MYTH: I only need sunscreen on sunny days. The sun can prove harmful even on

a body in water to work harder to move than it would if it were walking on solid ground.

2 Water buoyancy can enable people to do exercises that would be jarring on land. In water, roughly 90 percent of the body is buoyant. That means working out in the water will put less strain on the knees and hips when it comes to performing high-impact jumping exercises.

3 Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout. Swimming can elevate the heart rate to an optimal level and work the lungs, too. Pushing oneself harder and harder can help to burn calories and lead to weight loss.

Many people view swimming as a purely recreational activity, but the health benefits of swimming should not be overlooked.

Swimming is a great way to get fit, providing great cardiovascular exercise that’s easy on the joints. Swimming engages a variety of muscle groups, making it a great way to get a complete workout. The following are some additional benefits of including swimming as part of your exercise regimen.

1 When swimming, muscles are worked hard, which can help build strength. Much of that work can be traced to the fact that water is far more resistant than air, forcing

4 Just about every muscle is used when a body is swimming. Swimming targets the shoulders, back, arms, legs, hips, and gluteals without requiring complicated workout equipment.

5 Swimming may help improve coordination, balance and posture. Swimming also may promote greater flexibility by stretching the body through fluid movements.

While swimming is often considered a relaxing activity tailor-made for warm summer days, it also provides a complete and demanding workout that can benefit the body in a variety of ways.

As handy as dishwashers can be, sometimes they seem to lose their cleaning power. While inadequate cleaning may indicate the time has come to replace the dishwasher, many times all the appliance needs is a little maintenance and TLC.

Begin by investigating the interior of the dishwasher. Check for any visible food particles or debris, cleaning out any food traps at the bottom of the dishwasher. Don’t forget to clean the rubber seals around the perimeter of the dishwasher where the door meets up with the tub of the dishwasher, as this is a prime location for debris to gather.

Running an empty dishwasher with a clarifying rinse can help wash away any residue and improve perfor-mance. Plus, this maintenance task can remove odours and refresh the dishwasher. Put two cups of white vin-egar in the bottom of the dishwasher so that it will distribute through the appliance during the cleaning cycles.

White vinegar will naturally break down old dishwasher soap and scale buildup inside of the unit. Consider a short rinse afterward with some bak-

ing soda to remove odours and scour the interior of the appliance as well. Baking soda and vinegar are popular cleaning substances and are safe to use around food items.

For more intense cleaning, create a bath of vinegar and water in your sink basin. Remove parts from the dishwasher, such as shelving and the utensil holder, so that they can soak in the solution.

Some dishwashers have removable spinning cleaning arms. Take these off, if possible, and let them soak to dislodge any residue that has clogged the water jets. Use a pipe cleaner or another flexible device to carefully remove any debris from the water holes. You may be amazed at what has built up in these small holes.

You also may need to inspect the drain line, which is often made of plastic and connected to the trap under the kitchen sink. On occasion, this tube can get blocked and prevent the dishwasher from draining effec-tively.

Maintaining a dishwasher with reg-ular cleaning can help it perform bet-ter during each and every load.

ROSE WINE: 2013

PRODUCER: Arrowleaf CellarsRegion/Country: Okanagan Valley; BC VQA Grape/Blend: Pinot NoirPrice/ABV: $17.50/12.4% ABV

THROUGH THE EYES: Cherry red; clear and bright.

ON THE NOSE: Cherries, raspberries, vanilla and both floral and earthy notes.

ON THE PALATE: Cherries, red berries, smoke and sweet spice.

OVERALL: Silky, juicy, fruity: Just plain lovely.

BUY IT: B.C. liquor stores.

PAIR IT: Try this wine with a mushroom and cheese tart or pork chops with fried onions and mushrooms. This Pinot Noir worked well for me alongside the potato salad in the Lepp Farm Market recipe and grilled strip loin steaks that I rubbed with a combination of Dijon mustard, garlic, thyme, rosemary, sea salt, black pepper, balsamic vinegar (just a few drops for colour and sweet zing) and olive oil.

SummerVinaigrette Potato SaladPROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET

2 tbsp. David’s Dynamite Caesar Paste (you can use either regular or vegan, the only difference between the two is that vegan has no anchovies in it, and both are dairy and egg free)

1 clove garlic, minced (optional, Caesar paste already gives it a good garlic kick!)

1 tsp. each salt & pepper¾ cup extra virgin olive oil

OPTIONAL ADD-INS:1-2 tbsp capers, drainedchopped green onion or chivesgrilled onions, peppers, asparagus or zucchini - diced into bite sized piecesgreen beans, cut into 2 inches pieces,

lightly blanched and cooledfresh basil, parsley & thyme

INSTRUCTIONS:Mix vinegar, mustard, Caesar paste, garlic and salt and pepper together. Slowly drizzle in olive oil, whisking continuously until well mixed and all olive oil is used. You can also use an immersion blender to mix it. Gently boil baby potatoes until just tender when pierced with a knife, and let them cool to room temp. Cut in half, or in quarters if large and pour marinade over them. Gently fold in grilled vegetables, capers and herbs, if using. Best served room temperature. Keeps well in the refrigerator for a number of days.

This delicious potato salad is perfect for when you don’t want a mayonnaise based dressing, and is suitable for someone on an egg and dairy free diet. David’s Dynamite Caesar Paste is an excellent and versatile Canadian made product that gives this recipe creaminess without adding any dairy product. You can make it just with potatoes, adding some snipped chives and a few herbs at the end, but including some grilled veggies gives it beautiful colour and added nutrients. And because it’s dairy free, it lasts up to 5 days in the fridge, perfect for lunches the whole week through!

INGREDIENTS:3 tbsp. red wine vinegar and 1 tbsp.

balsamic vinegar OR¼ cup white balsamic vinegar - Antica

Dodi is a favourite brand of mine (makes it a bit sweeter, rather than tangy)

This always-smiling new Canadi-an of South Korean birth expertly cleans and boxes wedding dresses, creating precious keepsakes. Surely I must be the day’s most important customer as he humbly bows, presenting me with my golden dry-cleaning ticket. I commented that it was unfair that he knew my name, but I didn’t know his. With a mischie-vous twinkle he answered “you can call me James, James Bond” So now James Bond and I discuss the weather, his daughters and our market as he efficiently processes my dry-cleaning. “Customers may forget what you said but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.”

Many Abbotsford businesses offer ex-ceptional customer service, but let me commend two. Harry Atsma, of Cob-bler’s Corner on South Fraser Way, ap-prenticed as a cobbler in the basement of Midway Shoes in the 1950s, in the exact place his current business now lives. Mr. Atsma is old-school, proud of his workmanship and believes almost anything deserves fixing, rather than discarding. Proud dad Rob felt like a king the day he brought his shoes to be polished for our daughter’s wedding, and was told “no charge for such a special occasion”. When I asked if he was ready to retire soon, he inspired me with “why would I quit doing some-thing that I love?”

Golf provides numerous intangible benefits as well. Juniors gain more valuable life skills such as discipline, honesty, appreciation of nature, dedication and goal setting. The health aspects of golf for all ages are also a great virtue, with a typical 18 hole round burning over 1500 calories.

Looking forward, the future of the golf industry is bright. The majority of baby-boomers, for example, are retiring soon with an active lifestyle and available time that will be an ideal fit for golf. Similarly, most golf courses are diversifying their offerings to customize for the expectations of women, juniors, immigrants, business people and those with time crunched schedules.

National programs such as Take A Kid To The Course continue to expand every year, about to surpass 700 participating

courses in Canada. And most BC golf courses are reporting strong growth in their own junior programs, women’s leagues, and new golfer initiatives. More 9-hole options, fitness golf, technology games, relaxed dress codes, and iTunes are also emerging trends that will further broaden golf’s appeal.

And with golf’s return to the Olympics in 2016, especially since Canada is the defending gold medalist from way back in 1904, golf’s profile in Canada may well push its #1 status considerably higher!

JEFF CALERWOODCEO, National Golf Course Owners Association Canada

With over 60 million rounds of golf played each year, golf remains the #1 participation sport in Canada, a strong testament to its perceived value as such a fun, healthy recreation for all ages and both sexes.
