Editor’s LetterHave you noticed how much everyone is talking about the weather this year... even more so than usual. “We personally care when you’re not there”…That’s the motto behind a local family-run business “The House Holders” who recently decided to launch a service which, although wasn’t available during their own busy professional lives, they certainly wish it had been.

Business owner Judith, told us that during their busy professional lives, the ever increasing family demands, combined with several house moves, property rental and managed renovations meant that they were often in need of extra support whilst away on holiday and during their moves. Just having someone to off er advice when they were letting or selling their properties would have also been a huge help.

Judith’s family have now lived in Wiltshire for over 25 years and during that time have forged excellent relationships with a long list of local tradesmen who also provide support to the business. One of their partners has graduated from Sparsholt College with a Higher National Dipoloma in Animal Management.

Services

The House Guardians – Home Watch

The House Guardians provide regular and reliable household inspections of properties in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset, long or short term, whilst they are for sale or between lettings.

The service is also off ered to owners who are on holiday or overseas, attending sports events, in hospital/a nursing home or awaiting tradesmen's visits.

Leaving a property unoccupied is always a worry. As trusted key holders, The House Guardians can provide regular security and maintenance checks to maximise the safety of the home. Simple tasks such as checking security systems, switching lights on and off , drawing curtains, organising refuse bins, placing fl owers in windows and taking in the post help to deter intruders and ensure the property’s safekeeping.

The House Guardians can also

provide a professional "Short Term House Sitter" on an hourly, half day or whole day basis, to allow plumbers, engineers, tradesmen or deliveries into clients’ homes, thus avoiding the inconvenience of losing a day’s work and possibly a day’s pay, missing a vital meeting or being absent at a social event.

I had to go abroad quickly for an assignment. The House Holders organised the redecoration & successful letting of my house in my absence and looked after the property and garden whilst I was away. It was a huge problem solved and I was delighted with their service. Prof. Photographer.

The House Keepers – Home Safe Keeping

The House Keepers service provides a 'tailor-made' housekeeping programme including things such as maintenance, i.e. checking for leaks, fl ooding, infestations, temperature control, hygiene such as deep cleaning between

Is Your Head Banging?

Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head – inconvenient, and at times debilitating.

Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment.

Why does my head hurt?A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder.

Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes are other known triggers. Headaches can also result from a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suff ered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and

feel as if someone has stretched a rubber band around the top and side of your head. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience with a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light.

Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Suff erers may have 1-3 of these attacks every day for weeks or months which are often more painful than a migraine.

Brewing up a headache Found naturally in tea, coff ee and chocolate and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal of caff eine than the stimulant itself that can lead to headaches. On the fl ip side, non-prescription painkillers with added caff eine can actually speed up their eff ectiveness.

Treating your headache You can buy a range of diff erent painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than others – they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-infl ammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of anti-migraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan).

It’s recommended that you don’t take painkillers for more than two days at a time – if you do, you may be at risk of developing ‘medication-overuse’ headaches.

Natural Remedies

As well as improving your general lifestyle (more sleep and exercise, less booze and stress) try the following:

1. Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. (Not suitable for pregnant women).

2. Cooling headache pads: For some instant soothing relief, use these alongside any other medication or on their own.

3. Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.)

4. Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing infl ammation.

5. Acupuncture/massage/refl exology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely eff ective at relieving a nagging headache.

More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is?

The fi rst Newton Toney Flower Festival was held at St. Andrew’s Church in

2007 and was so successful that it is now a biennial event and very much part of village life.

The past three festivals have taken as their themes: Patron Saints, Village Life and West End Shows. This year’s festival is entitled ‘Pomp & Circumstance’ and will feature annual events with a royal link eg. Royal Ascot, Trooping the Colour, Festival

of Remembrance, Royal Variety Performance etc.

There will be fi fteen arrangements in all, put together by twelve amateur arrangers, most of whom live in Newton Toney, augmented by some from surrounding villages. As St. Andrew’s is a relatively small church, this number of arrangements achieves great impact and visitors to past festivals have been very complimentary – some going

as far as to say ‘as good as the Cathedral’!

The festival raises funds for St. Andrew’s and this year the money raised will be used to fi nance much-needed repairs to the church spire. Taking place on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July, the festival will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm each day. Refreshments will be available in the nearby village hall – morning coff ee, soup, sandwiches and afternoon tea with homemade cakes and cream teas.

We are delighted to be joined once again this year by the Allington Art Club who will be show-casing their talents with an exhibition of their very varied work – the exhibition will be staged in the village hall where there will also be some craft stalls.

Please come along and support us!

A cluster of schools, known as The Plains Schools Partnership, are actively seeking volunteers to become Life Mentors to give a local child or

young person to inspire them to

get the most from their lives.

Life Mentors can help students make positive life choices by listening and supporting them.

Mentors will meet with their student for about an hour every month. The Life Mentors scheme operates in primary and secondary schools in Durrington, Bulford Village, Larkhill, Netheravon and Figheldean.

Mentoring can make a real

Bassets were pleased to meet the head gardener of St Thomas’s green spaces Sara Getley, in order to present a cheque for two folding wheelbarrows.

St Thomas’s house is let out to many different local charities and organisations in addition to the community groups like the Friday Cafe, and the garden provides a place to relax and enjoy. The gardens are maintained by a small group of volunteers and the daffodils are just starting to bloom despite the poor weather.

However, garden waste disposal is a problem with so many mature shrubs and flower beds, and so wheelbarrows, bins and other equipment are very much needed. With St Thomas’s being a registered charity (number 1133882) any support you can give is very much appreciated.

We at Bassets are proud to support our local communities and would recommend a visit to the beautiful garden. The gardeners are currently growing plants to sell on May 25th so fingers crossed Spring actually arrives.

Recipe

Cheese, Bacon & Onion PieMakes 8 Slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion fi lling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use fl avoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Pastry:• 225g plain fl our• 1 tsp mustard powder• Pinch of salt• 115g butter, chilled and

diced• 4-5 tbsp iced water

Filling:• 175g smoked bacon pieces• 4 onions, peeled and thinly

sliced• 1 tbsp sunfl ower oil• 200g mature Cheddar

cheese, grated• Beaten egg, to glaze• Tomato salad, to serve

(see Tip)

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with fi nely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

To make the pastry, sift the fl our into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the fl our between your fi ngertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then fl atten into a disc and wrap in cling fi lm. Chill for 20-25 minutes.Meanwhile, prepare the fi lling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly fl oured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fl uted fl an tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper.Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the fi lling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fi ngertips. Trim off any excess pastry.Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

Grow Your Own VegAs the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be diffi cult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done.

by Pippa Greenwood

Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot.

If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat.

*Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant.

*You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include:

Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids.

Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating

mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.

Hoverfl ies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fi fty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.

Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs.

Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects.

Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:

*Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed fl owers, perfect for direct sowing.

*Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant): This yellow and white fl owered hardy annual is loved by hoverfl ies.

*Eschscholzia (the Californian

poppy): This pretty yellow, orange and cream fl owered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.

*Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiest hardy annuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many benefi cial insects.

The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf ), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you fi nd tastiest.

Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Go to www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables sent to you at just the right time for planting and each week you receive an email from her telling you all you need to know to ensure great results. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free e-book on organic gardening, and buy a hand-picked selection of garden products.

The Rotary Club of Amesbury held their annual cheque

presentation evening at the Boscombe Down Recreational Club, where all the moneys raised during the year are donated to deserving ,mainly local, organization and ones benefi ting the area.

President Kathy Gill and MC Rotarian Trevor Pettitt gave a fun and informative link on how the money was raised and what the public and your Rotary Club can

do together.

Altogether 14 local organizations benefi ted, with this year the emphasis on young people, such as Amesbury Silver Band who give free lessons to children and provides the instruments as well, also the school choirs, who sing at our Tree of Light ceremonies.

In our Rural area transport is often a problem, especially getting to hospitals etc., so where would we be without

our wonderful Link drivers in three locations, all received well deserved funds to support their voluntary work.

President Kathy’s chosen charity was Lucy’s Day Out (see their Web Site) a very special charity.

Our thanks to all who support our funding activities, for without them there would be no distribution.

Rotarian John Haywood

Rotary £10k Give Away

The Rotary Club of Amesbury are very concerned about the fate of refugees from Syria, now counted in millions, and half of which are children under 11 years old.

They have therefore devoted their funds to sending a Shelter Box which provides a large tent and survival equipment as well as cold

weather clothes and blankets.

The Boxes cost £590 and already 700 have been positioned in the Lebanon, and more to Jordan, by our Shelter Box Response Teams, but hundreds more are urgently needed.

If you can help, and know that donations go in whole

to providing Shelter Boxes, please make cheques out to the Rotary Club of Amesbury and send to Rotarian John Haywood MBE, 28 Earls Court Road, Amesbury, SP4 7NB.

If you need more information call 01980 590484.

Thank you.

According to newspaper reports of the 1930s, and up until the 1950s,

the Woodford Valley held a very popular and widely supported annual fl ower and produce show. In the earlier days, this was an event of some note – the judges being entertained to lunch in salubrious surroundings. In addition there were small livestock classes (chickens and pigs) together with all the fun of a summer fete. The events were held in the grounds of the local manor houses – Great Durnford Manor or Heale House, and were open to both professional and amateur gardeners.

The Woodford Valley Gardening Club, under the guiding light of its new Chairman, John Dalton, is resurrecting this event, albeit on a slightly smaller scale in the fi rst year – and without animals!

On Saturday, 14 September 2013, in the Village Hall at Middle Woodford, the gardening residents, schoolchildren (both of Woodford Primary and Archers Gate schools) and workers of the Woodford Valley villages will compete to produce the best of the bunch in the many vegetable classes – to include the longest runner bean pod, and the most attractive squash. There are separate children’s classes to include one for the tallest weed! Local fi rms have generously donated the prizes. If you are interested in taking part, then encourage your plants that are already growing, and it is not too late to set more seed or plants for that winning entry.

All who are eligible to enter can fi nd out more and obtain a list of classes by emailing woodfordgardenclub@gmail.

com or by telephoning the Secretary on 01722 782910.

The event will be open to the public from 2.30pm to 5.30pm on the Saturday, and during that time cream teas will be served in the river garden behind the Village Hall.

Woodford Valley Gardening Club holds meetings on the fi rst Wednesday of each month in the Village Hall at Middle Woodford. Speakers on a wide variety of topics enthuse members – from compost, through stately home gardens, to how to avoid backache. The Club also organises summer evening outings to local gardens of interest. Annual membership is only £10.00, and visitors are most welcome for a token £2.00 – to include a free cup of coff ee and a biscuit!

These days, we’re doing more and more things digitally: our holiday snaps sit on hard disks, our music is often in MP3 and we’re as likely to download fi lms as buy them on disc. That’s great when your PC’s working perfectly, but how do you make sure it stays that way?

Protecting your PC falls into three key categories: protecting your valuable data, protecting your PC from online threats and protecting your PC from physical damage.

Protecting the hardware is the easy bit. Surge protectors can prevent nasty spikes in the electricity supply from causing any damage, and if you have a laptop you can buy a Kensington Lock to secure it to something suitably hefty. A compressed air canister can blow dust out of fan vents and debris out of keyboards, and it’s a good idea to keep your PC away from extremes of temperature - a sunny room in summer is a terrible place to keep a PC. Be particularly aware of potential spills: liquid can destroy computers and you won’t believe the damage a tin of baby food can do to a keyboard. It’s a very good idea to keep food and drink and PCs separate.

No matter how careful you are, computers can and do break: every hard disk will

wear out eventually. That’s why it’s really important to keep backup copies of anything important such as family photographs, home videos or iTunes downloads. You can do this in several ways - using an online service such as Mozy (www.mozy.co.uk) or Skydrive (skydrive.live.com), by burning them to DVD or by copying them to an external hard disk, but remember that if your backup is in the same place as the original, a domestic disaster such as a burst pipe might ruin both of them.

It’s worth remembering too that services such as Facebook won’t compensate you if they accidentally delete or damage your online photo libraries; once again make sure that if it’s important, you have more than one copy in case of disaster.

The other issue to worry about is “malware”, which is software designed to do nasty things. Sometimes malware spies on you, trying to obtain your passwords and other details; other times it just damages fi les or slows your PC to a crawl. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to avoid: Windows 7 and Windows 8 both have fi rewall software, which can prevent nasties getting in, and if you’re suspicious you can avoid most malware. Don’t open unsolicited

email attachments from people you don’t know, and don’t let fake emails from the bank fool you: your bank will never send you programs or zipped documents in an email.

Always make sure you’re downloading from reputable sources, such as Microsoft.com, not Big Dave’s Totally Honest Download Page and make sure your web browser software is up to date. Old browsers are a real security risk.

Last but not least, invest in some security software. You don’t need to spend any money - Microsoft’s Security Essentials is free (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/), as is AVG Free anti-virus (free.avg.com) and AVAST (www.avast.com), and there are also free tools to tune up your PC. One of our favourites is CCleaner (www.piriform.com/ccleaner), which works miracles on sluggish PCs, and we’d also recommend the free Ad-Aware program (www.lavasoft.com) to prevent annoying software setting up shop on your PC.

Keeping your PC safe isn’t diffi cult, time-consuming or expensive, but it’s worth doing. Think of PC protection like home insurance: you hope you’ll never need it, but if disaster strikes you’ll be glad you have it.

Finance

Ignorance is NO Defence

In my parents’ day, money was a simpler matter. In many families they went to work, earned their money, paid their taxes and saved what they could. When it came time to buy a house, they approached the bank manager to see if he would be kind enough to lend them three times the husband’s salary (the wife stayed at home looking after the children) for a repayment mortgage which was paid off over 20 or 25 years before he got his fi nal salary scheme pension.By the time I started earning money, it had become much more complicated. We were two people paying the mortgage needing much higher salary multiples to aff ord rising house prices. Then came the ending of MIRAS, the emergence of interest only mortgages and endowment policies to pay them off (or not as it turned out in some cases). Pensions became more complex too, with choices for opting out of SERPS, private pension schemes, money purchase schemes and fi nal salary scheme pensions became a distant memory for most.Throw in the scandals of mis-selling of endowments and PPI to name just two, and it’s clear even for my generation the fi nancial world has become a confusing place. Hedge funds, derivatives, swaps – even the so-

called experts struggle to make sense of it.The common thing throughout all these generations, my parents, myself, our children, is that none of us have ever had any fi nancial education. Not one single lesson in the classroom at my school was ever devoted to personal fi nancial matters. The fi nancial company employees are taught how to sell to us, but we have little idea of how to make a judgement on what they tell us.At last, this should be about to change. In 2011, 118,000 people signed an e-petition via the MoneySavingExpert.com website to force the issue of Financial Education in Schools to be debated in Parliament. Draft proposals have been published recently and are still under consultation into April, but it is expected that from September 2014, fi nancial education will form part of the national curriculum in England, with 11-16 year olds receiving it as part of their compulsory citizenship education.Plans are that pupils in Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14) will be taught the function and use of money, personal budgeting, money management and a range of fi nancial products and services.

From 14 to 16 in Key Stage 4, they will be taught about wages, taxes, debt, credit, fi nancial risk plus more sophisticated fi nancial services and products. The Government wants students to have “the fi nancial skills to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis as well as to plan for future fi nancial needs.”It is clear that the lessons are long overdue. You only have to look at how much the fi nancial world has changed in the last 40 years to see that what is needed (and will hopefully be taught in schools) is a good grounding in the ‘basics’ of understanding personal fi nance. It is to be hoped that the generation that receive this education realise that their learning will need to continue long after they leave the classroom as the fi nancial world continues to evolve. If knowledge is power, having the right fi nancial knowledge will help our children avoid the mistakes with money we may have made along the way, and that can only be a good thing. In the meantime, pass on what you know already Mums and Dads, and a free Teen Cash Class is available at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/Teenagers-cash-class.

Taking professional fi nancial advice is advisable, but your own education is essential
