WelcomeWell hopefully you didn’t blink and miss the summer. It’s almost a relief that autumn is on the way - no more moaning about the lack of sun. In fact you may be surprised to hear that doctors all over the
country have been experiencing an increase in the number of patients with symptoms related to Vitamin D defi ciency. My mum was recently diagnosed with this condition and she’s not alone. Research has shown that half of all people in the UK have worryingly low levels. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was recently prescribed Vitamin D supplements as her levels tested were found to be the lowest her doctor had ever seen!
We can’t promise any sun with this issue but we can promise some foodie delights including all the latest on Salisbury Food and Drink Festival plus a delicious recipe for Autumn Pudding. If you love a good hog roast, turn over the page where you will fi nd Hog ‘n’ Spit really deliver on both taste and service.
Enjoy the read.... until next time!

Early civilization discovered the advantages of spit
roasting. If you lived a couple of hundred years ago, you would have had to cook over an open fi re. Your dinner spun on a long stick that was cut from a surrounding tree and your feast was trussed on the branch.
It must have tasted pretty good, as still to this day it is the most popular method of cooking, offering a taste which is truly hard to beat.
Why Choose
HognSpit??
HognSpit bring this timeless cooking method into the 21st Century with startling results. Eating should be ‘fun’ and a hog or chickens roasting on spit is without doubt, ‘theatrical eating...
Established as a family business, HognSpit is managed by Cammy Scott, an ex Warrant
Offi cer in the British Army, who launched the business with a commitment to quality, service
& produce that underpin the company’s business philosophy to this day.

What makes hognspit different??
Simply, HognSpit has earned a reputation for product and service excellence. Cammy told us “Our Hogs’ are cooked to perfection, carved
by our experienced & qualifi ed chefs, exactly as you like it. We also, as a speciality, ‘Rotisserie’ cook whole chickens which are made even tastier with our special (secret!) herbs & spices!”
Juicy mouth-watering pork, fresh bread, ‘hot’ fl avoured sauces & gorgeous crispy crackling. Fresh, never frozen, slow-roasted chicken, one (or both) cooked and served at the same time guarantee a memorable culinary experience…Pleasant to the eye as much as the tongue…
Whether your preference is for the subtle or sublime, HognSpit can cater for you with a personal service, impeccable quality and delectable food which guarantees you will enjoy your event as much as your guests do. Staff are well presented and trained to uphold HognSpit’s high standards.
“We are, and proudly continue to be, the choice supplier of Hog Roasts, Spit Roasted Chicken and an ever expanding variety of tastes in the South West. We continually thank our staff for their unyielding hard work & pursuit of excellence. Praise must also go to our supply chain & UK farming industry for producing the best meat in the world.
Most importantly we would like to thank our clients. We believe that providing our customers with what they want, when and how they want it, is the key to customer satisfaction.”
Service level quality is retained by continual development, and through customer feedback and analysis. To book your HognSpit event, call 07544 551212 or email [email protected].

It’s the stuff of Daily Mail competitions. It’s the fantasy that drives the holiday
cottage industry: when once a year we satisfy our desire for rural living by renting our own dream cottage. But what happens when – like newly retired couple Gary and Linda Speed from Basingstoke - you decide to live the dream?
Gary and Linda wanted to buy a spacious, detached cottage in the West Country with off -street parking, original features and countryside views. Having around £300,000 in the bank, they were confi dent that they would fi nd their perfect home.
However, they were initially dismayed to fi nd that while house prices may have slumped in recent years, the market for period properties in popular areas remains surprisingly buoyant.
The couple eventually found a reasonably-priced cottage that ticked all the right boxes. Located
in a quiet village outside a popular Dorset tourist town, the attractive stone-built, thatched property had no central heating and lacked a modern kitchen and bathroom, but it did have a large garden and all the period features they wanted.
“We knew that it needed updating,” says Linda. “But it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t understand why someone else hadn’t already snapped it up.”
However, as the various surveys and building reports they had commissioned began to pile up, the true cost of the renovation was revealed.
The stonework needed re-pointing, the electrical wiring had decayed and the damaged thatch would cost
thousands to replace, so Gary and Linda reluctantly pulled out. They had incurred costs along the way – solicitors’ fees plus the cost of the surveys and reports – but they had avoided the nightmare of a ‘money pit’ purchase by taking professional advice early on.
If Gary and Linda’s dreams didn’t match up to reality, they were not alone. In a recent survey by AA Home Emergency Response, 2,005 people were questioned about their ideal home. 28% of respondents fantasised about a owning a property in a rural location, with a
large, open-plan kitchen/diner and living area featuring
high on their ‘must-have’ list. 48% of the sample wanted sea views while slightly more than half prioritised views of
mountains or open fi elds.

the British countryside will know, rather than enjoying expansive views, many village dwellings face directly onto a busy road. A large kitchen/diner is also a rare fi nd – particularly if the cottage is Grade II listed and the local authority does not permit structural alterations.
In fact the competition for properties that ‘have it all’ is so intense that in sought-after areas you will need to spend £500,000 plus if you want a property with good internal space that enjoys excellent countryside or seaside views. Buyers on a more modest budget will inevitably have to compromise.
After their experience in Dorset, Gary and Linda seriously considered giving up their dream of a West Country home, but during a weekend trip to Somerset a ‘For Sale’ sign caught their eye.
Their fi nal purchase was a small, terraced town house that faced directly onto the street - a far cry from the ‘roses round the door’ cottage with a large garden they had originally envisaged. As Linda explains: “We knew we had to compromise on our dream, but in the end it didn’t really feel like a compromise. It was diff erent, but we loved the village and somehow the chemistry was right.”

Whether you own a small garden or a large wood, the chances are that, at
some point throughout the year, your trees/hedges/shrubs will benefi t from some professional TLC.
Active Tree Care are experts in arboriculture off ering a wide range of services including crown reductions, reshaping and thinning, hedge management, stump removal as well as site clearance. All work is carried out by their team of highly skilled arborists. Whether customers require full tree removal/management, regular hedge trimming or just advice on disease and health care, Active Tree Care are there to help.
An additional service off ered is woodchip mulch which acts as a brilliant weed suppressant. It’s also great when used in chicken pens, horse menages and path construction.
As you would expect from a local business who consistently achieve
average scores of 9.9 - 10 on Check-a-Trade from their customers, their service is fi rst class with an ongoing commitment to staff training. They have full N.P.T.C. certifi cation, all employees have P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment) and ATC hold £10 million public liability insurance.
Arboriculture requires a high degree of technical competence supported by training and experience and for these reasons, arboriculture should only be undertaken by well trained and competent arborists who are a member of a professional organisation. Active Tree Care are a member of the Arboricultural Association and pride themselves on delivering a reliable, professional and environmentally friendly service.
With over 20 years experience in both the domestic and commercial sectors, and having recently completed a project for the Olympic Games which involved tree surgery/removal on the Weymouth relief road, their work remains in huge
demand throughout the Salisbury area, including Hampshire and Dorset.
In contrast to many other trades, Active Tree Care refuses to let the current economic climate aff ect it’s continued growth. Owner Tim Goldfi nch explains “our service together with our customer care is what stands us apart and makes us so popular with our customers. Our testimonials on Check-a-Trade are proof of that and whatever area of arboriculture our customers need help with, we will always strive to deliver a quality of service we can be proud of” .
So, whether your trees or hedges need attention, or you’re just after some good old professional and healthy advice, give Active Tree Care a call today for a free quotation on 01725 512679 or mob 07887 518722.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2012
New car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered
no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty big deal.
So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is effi ciency, space and refi nement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it.
In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a time when design is at the forefront
of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives.
However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a four-wheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. We drove a pre-production model, but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg.
The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled
strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that
made up our test route.
The 2.2-litre is likely to be good
for 125mph and will crack the benchmark
60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refi nement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too.
If we were to be picky, we did fi nd the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners.

at least, will also make a debut on the Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example.
What will come as standard is yet to be fi nalised, but expect the lot on the top-of-the-range model.
There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate.
But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot fl oor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely fl at. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run.
Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole off ering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year off ering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very diff erent story indeed.

Autumn Pudding
1 Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.
2 Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fi t the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut
the remaining slices of bread in half.
3 Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.
4 Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit fi lling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.
5 Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.
Serves 6Ready in 1 hour(plus overnight chilling)

Breast is best!If you are expecting a baby, or have recently given birth why not come along to the Five Wishes, Amesbury, and Bulford Children’s Centres’ Breastfeeding Support Groups. There you will meet kind and caring National Childbirth Trust trained peer supporters who will be happy to answer any queries you have, or to help with any specifi c problems you might be experiencing. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet like minded Mums, to feed your baby in a supportive and relaxed environment and to enjoy complimentary tea and toast!
It is widely recognised that breast milk is good for babies as it lowers the chances of diarrhoea and vomiting, chest infections, being constipated, developing eczema, fewer ear infections and there is less
likelihood of obesity developing later in life. Breastfeeding is also good for Mums as it lowers the risk of Mum getting breast and ovarian cancer, it naturally uses up 500 calories a day and it saves money!! Breastfeeding can also strengthen the bond between Mum and babe laying the foundation for good health and well-being.
Centres Co-ordinator, Andrea Gray, adds “deciding whether to breast or bottle feed is a very personal decision but why not come along to one of our groups, before you fi nally make that decision, to fi nd out more and to realise the many benefi ts of breastfeeding, it also saves you money! If you have recently had
a baby and are not fi nding breastfeeding as easy as the
posters make it look I am sure our
knowledgeable peer supporters will be able
to help, please do not feel shy or embarrassed, we are here to support you, there’s no charge.”
The Breastfeeding Support Group at Bulford Children’s Centre, Hubert Hamilton Road, Bulford Camp, SP4 9JY (tel. 01980 632660) are held on Mondays, 10-11.30am, and at Five Wishes Children’s Centre, Kitchener Road, Amesbury SP4 7AX (tel. 01980 677218) on Fridays 10-11.30am.
We are here to support parents/carers of 0-5 year olds.

STARS APPEAL TIDWORTH 10k & 3k FUN RUNnow open for registration
Registration is now open for the eighth annual Tidworth 10k & 3k Fun Run. The popular event, in aid of the Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal and organised with the assistance of 1st Mechanised Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron (215), takes place at Tedworth House on Sunday 4th November. Over 1,000 people took part last year. Once again, insurance company Aviva are sponsoring the event.
The event attracts runners of all ages and abilities, and although there are always some fast times, the focus is on fun and fundraising. Runners can choose between a 3k and 10k route, which both start and finish
at Tedworth House. The 10k goes through the army camp before heading off on to Salisbury Plain. The 3k follows a much less challenging, fun route around the Tidworth polo grounds and is suitable for all to run, walk or toddle including pushchairs.
The runs have become a key part of the Stars Appeal’s annual fundraising. All runners are asked to raise sponsorship money towards an area of the Hospital close to their heart, such as Cardiac care, the Pembroke Unit for people with cancer and blood disorders, Caring 4 Kids or the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and attached Parents Accommodation Unit.
Gemma Heath, Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Stars Appeal said, “We are enormously grateful to the Army for their continued support which ensures that this popular event can go ahead. Monies raised will help us to continue making a difference for local people in hospital.”
The event often sells out, so organisers advise people to register early to ensure their place. Runners can register online via the Stars Appeal website.

At its weekly meeting on July 9th at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club, Netherhampton, Wilton Rotary Club’s 33rd Presidential Handover was completed when outgoing President Jeff Gyles (above right) formally handed over the president’s chain of office to incoming President Andy Rhind-Tutt. Like Jeff, Andy will be serving his second term as president having previously held office during
Rotary’s centenary year in 2005-6. In line with
Rotary protocol Andy welcomed Jeff to the Club’s governing Council
as Immediate Past President.
Under Jeff’s leadership the Club has enjoyed one of its most successful years: record funds raised by its Mammoth Car Boot Sale and Rotary Spireworks enabled the Club to donate more than £20,000 to
over 40 local, national and overseas charities. And in helping to marshall the Supercars at Wilton House event and the recent Walk For Wards the Club played a major role in raising significant funds for Salisbury District Hospital’s Stars Appeal.
Following the handover ceremony the Club’s Founder President, Arthur Bowden, presented Jeff with a Paul Harris Fellowship, the traditional Rotary award for distinguished service.

The Forum Stroke Club hold aMINI OLYMPICSOn 24th July 2012 The Forum Stroke Club based in Wilton held their very own mini Olympics. Although many of the survivors are either wheelchair bound or have a disability with arms and walking due to their stroke, it didn’t stop them having a go, in fact some of them had three or four goes at the club’s challenging archery for the disabled. Organised and run by Steve Olding who designed and adapted the bows to suit disabled folk, the volunteers and carers were also catered for with unadapted bows. This was to be an outdoor event but due to the wet summer the playing field originally booked became unsuitable and had to be
cancelled. However all was not lost as Robin Hood came to the rescue
and set the games up in the Wilton Community Centre.
Curling, skittles, a grocery shi (bottles, cans and cartons to be knocked down) were also part of the games. Staff included
a continental touch with Boules refereed by volunteer
John. This was played outside
in the sunshine in the little back garden at the back of the Community Centre looked
after by caretakers June and Dave. The afternoon culminated with a medal ceremony and lunch prepared by Theo Ross and served by the volunteers. A lovely day was had by all. The next meeting is on 4th September, the Club
meet every Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Wilton Community Centre, West
Street, Wilton. Please phone Dee Mansfield on 01722 710508 for more information. You are also
invited to attend a Stroke Awareness Morning on 11th September to find out more about the support offered for stroke victims and their families.

Rehoming Appeal
HAPPY HOUND ELLA LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOMEDogs Trust Salisbury Rehoming Appeal
Jo Blake, Supporter Relations Offi cer at Dogs Trust Salisbury, tells us “Ella is a four-year old
border collie who was abandoned at our centre, tied to the gates, in February. She is a very clever girl and since she has been with us she has learned ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘paw’ and ‘roll over’ and is really eager to learn more. She is ball-mad and really outdoorsy so loves to play, go for walks and explore.
When she was abandoned at our centre, she was left with a muzzle on and it took us a while to get if off of her as she was just terrifi ed. As a result, she was very shy and extremely nervous of new people, but is now coming out of her shell. She is growing in confi dence every day and is starting to become very aff ectionate towards the staff but is
still a bit wary of new people.
She is looking for a stable adult home with owners who have had previous experience of owning a collie; she could live with another dog that is ideally as energetic and fun-loving as she is. Ella’s new owners would need to be willing to help her continue her training and settle her in and give her some of the TLC she has missed out on in life. They would also need to travel to the centre several times to meet her before taking her home.
She is a lovely dog who would make a great addition to any lucky home.” If you think you can off er Ellla a new place to rest her paws, then please visit Dogs Trust Salisbury at 45 Amesbury Road, Newton Tony,
Wiltshire, SP4 0HW or call them on 01980 629634 to arrange to meet this bubbly lass.
Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres nationwide and one in Dublin.
