sues of both national and local concern.”

Mr Shatter said there would now be a great battle for the con-stituency of Dublin South, now renamed Dublin Rathdown, after it shrunk from a 5-seat to a 3-seat constituency.

Born in Co Offaly, Deputy Mitch-ell was educated at Trinity Col-lege, where she qualified with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Politics.

She was an economics teacher before entering politics. She first became involved in politics in 1985 when she was elected to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

In her statement Deputy Mitch-ell said she had engaged in a “long and difficult period of re-flection” before she announced he decision.

“I am extremely grateful to An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, and to former Fine Gael leaders for the opportunity to play a role at national level, and currently as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and of the Council of Europe,” she added.

“In leaving national politics, I am consoled in knowing that under the current Government, our country’s fortunes are being turned around as more and more people return to work.”

“Olivia has made an outstand-ing contribution to public life, both at local and national level, and her retirement is a big loss.

“I want to publically thank Ol-ivia for everything she has done as a Fine Gael colleague and pub-lic representative and to wish her well for the future.

“I hope that both Olivia and her husband, Jimmy, greatly enjoy the extra time they will have for each other, for family and, in particu-lar, for grandchildren.”

He added: “There is, of course, a life outside politics but I have lit-tle doubt that Olivia will continue to offer her wisdom and counsel following her retirement on is-

and for the tremendous support given to me by the Fine Gael mem-bers in the constituency.”

Cllr Josepha Madigan (FG) said Deputy Mitchell had been a tre-mendous representative for her constituents for almost 20 years.

“She has also been a role model for women looking to enter poli-tics, including myself,” Cllr Madi-gan said.

“She has been very influential in my political career, giving me invaluable advice and support during my successful council elec-tion campaign last year.

“I hope to continue her good work and if selected to contest the general election for Fine Gael, I know that I can count on her sup-port.”

Cllr Neale Richmond (FG) de-scribed Deputy Mitchell as a mod-el representative.

“Throughout her political ca-reer, Olivia has been able to com-bine the best attributes of a good TD and an assiduous constituency worker who has had a strong im-pact on national politics too,” he said.

Minister Bruton opens new Amgen facility in Dun LaoghaireNeil Fetherstonhaugh

THE Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bru-ton officially cut the red tape on a new US$300 million facility for leading biotech company, Amgen in Dun Laoghaire.

The facility currently provides 340 jobs and delivers state-of-the-art manufacturing capability to Amgen.

The development of the new

facility included the construc-tion of an 11,500 square metre production plant known as Pro-duction Module 3, a 5,800 square metre cold chain warehouse and

major refurbishment of the other buildings which already existed on site.

Work on the project, which was supported by the Department of Jobs through IDA Ireland, began in November 2011, and created

over 500 construction jobs. Minister Bruton TD said: “The

story of this project encapsulates the recovery of the Irish econo-my.

“By investing millions of euros in innovation and in its work-

force, and by bringing new prod-uct lines to Ireland, this Amgen facility provides a great example of how innovative companies can excel in this country.”

Martin Shanahan, CEO, IDA Ireland said: “As one of the

world’s leading biotechnology companies, Amgen’s investment in Ireland is hugely significant to both the local economy and to Ireland’s reputation as a location of excellence for biotechnology investments.”

Kerry Ingalls, Vice President with Amgen, added: “Our new facility will enable us to serve many more patients with griev-ous illnesses.”

ROUTINE: many parents look forward to back-to-school season. STOCK PHOTO▪

Renewed appreciation for teachers

LAST week I saw an interesting blackboard sign outside my local coffee shop. It read something along the lines of: ‘Children are back in school so treat yourself to some well-deserved me time with our mid-morning specials’.

The place was packed with happy parents, fresh from the school run. You couldn’t get a table, inside or outside the place. The sense of relief was palpable as mums and dads sipped their lattes and munched on freshly baked scones.

opinion >>

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

While it is of course wrong to look at our schools as a State-funded babysitting service, there’s no doubt that parents relish a bit of time away from their kids after the long summer break.

Research just published by the MummyPages website confirms what we already suspected.

It found that 63 per cent of mums breathe a sigh of relief and secretly look forward to back-to-school time.

But there’s more to it than parents simply wanting to take some time out for coffee. While 34 per cent look forward to having some free time for themselves, an overwhelming 91 per cent just want to get back into a routine.

There are financial reasons, too. Of those surveyed, 17 per cent found school time less expensive than the cost of summer activities. Indeed, while sports camps might seem like an attractive proposition during the holidays, the cost adds up – particularly if you have a few children.

An honest 43 per cent

admitted that it was exhausting trying to entertain children during the eight-week break.

The outrageous cost of childcare in Ireland places an even greater burden on families during the summer, making it more difficult in situations where both parents work.

Clearly, this is an area that the Government still needs to deliver on and it remains to be seen if promised childcare reform becomes a reality this side of the general election.

In the meantime, we should be grateful that our children are in such good hands for a large portion of the day. We may joke about the long holidays enjoyed by members of the teaching profession and their relatively short working days.

But, come September, we seem to develop renewed appreciation for the role they play in our kids’ lives. Because after two months at home with our youngsters, one thing is for sure: our teachers certainly have their work cut out for them!

Survey reveals the benefits of business skills to educationA RECENT survey of national school teachers in Ireland has pro-vided clear evidence of the benefits of entrepreneurship and business skills programmes in the primary school curriculum.

More than 330 schools were surveyed to provide a compre-hensive overview of the benefits of junior entrepreneurship for primary school pupils.

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP), led by Jerry Kennelly, is the only national programme that promotes en-trepreneurship at primary school level. Last year, the JEP pro-gramme was rolled out to more than 10,000 primary school chil-dren in Ireland and Northern Ire-

land, and this year the numbers signing up for JEP are expected to increase significantly.

“This latest research shows how much children can benefit from JEP,” said Jerry Kennelly, co-founder of the Junior Entre-preneur Programme and CEO of Tweak.com.

“Introducing children to en-trepreneurship and creating a ‘can do’ culture from an early age not only helps with self esteem and personal development, but

it also enables students to better understand subject choices and make career decisions at second-ary school level.

“JEP provides a real opportu-nity for children - there is no cost to schools or parents, and the benefits are enormous. Develop-ing a real understanding and love for turning business ideas and concepts into reality will not only provide children with opportuni-ties in the future, but will also support job creation and eco-nomic development in Ireland,” added Mr Kennelly.

The JEP Survey showed that 87 per cent of teachers saw an

increase in confidence in children participating in the Junior Entre-preneur Programme.

Teachers surveyed agreed that children’s communications and presentation skills benefited enormously from the free JEP programme, while life skills such as decision making and team-work were greatly enhanced in primary school children as a di-rect result.

In terms of the businesses cre-ated by primary school pupils across Ireland, 48 per cent were

in the Arts, Crafts & Design area, with 23 per cent in the Food & Beverage sector and 12 per cent in Print and Publishing. The JEP businesses, set up by pupils, had teams with key roles such as management, marketing, and sales and finance in each com-pany, generated revenue and in most cases, profit. Some junior entrepreneurs re-invested their profits while others split the pro-ceeds, netting an average return of €50 per pupil. Many classes also made a donation to charity.

Pictured at the launch of the survey are Jerry Kennelly, founder of the JEP Programme with Martin Hamilton (Mash Direct) and JEP primary school pupils Daniel Elmes and Katie McMeekin. Photo by Brian Morrison

The programme is supported by many of Ireland’s best-known entrepreneurs, including Anne Heraty (CPL), John Tuohy (Parcel Motel), Martin Hamilton (MashDi-rect) and David Walsh (Netwatch) among others, who support and drive the programme in the coun-ties and regions throughout Ire-land.

Music Network jumps for joy!MUSIC Network has welcomed an announcement by Heather Humphreys, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, confirming capital funds of €210,000 for the Music Capital Scheme 2015.

The scheme, which is support-ed by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and managed by Music Network, pro-vides funding for the purchase of musical instruments to both non-professional performing groups/ensembles and professional mu-sicians.

Minister Humphreys said: “In Ireland, we are lucky to possess a wealth of musical talent.

“For this talent to continue to progress and flourish it is vital that our musicians are supported and provided with the opportuni-ties to improve their performing ability.

“Over the past five years, the funding provided by my De-partment for the Music Capital Scheme has enabled Music Net-work to provide support for the purchase of musical instruments for a wide range of talented in-dividuals and groups, including choirs, orchestras, youth bands and traditional music groups.

“I am delighted therefore to announce capital funding of €210,000 for the Music Capital Scheme in 2015.

Commenting on the announce-ment, Music Network CEO Sharon Rollston said: “Music Network’s mission to make live music hap-pen in Ireland is reinforced by the Music Capital Scheme.

“This has funded 195 musi-

cians, groups and organisations, benefitting up to 28,800 people throughout Ireland since its in-ception in 2008.

“We are delighted to once again be offering the scheme in 2015 and are very grateful to the

Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for its continued support.”

The Music Capital Scheme was established by The Arts Council, the IRMA Trust and Music Net-work in 2008.

Locals volunteer to clean up vandalised cemetery

number of occasions in the past couple of years but the turnout for today’s event shows me there is still a passion for this cemetery and the history beyond its gates.

“The Glasnevin Trust and Rich-mond Barracks are currently

working together to open these important national historical sites for May 2016.

“Having both these significant sites open to the public again will not only benefit the local people in Inchicore but will attract visi-

tors on both a national and inter-national level.

“The history of Goldenbridge Cemetery has gone untold for over 100 years but from May 2016 the public will have the op-portunity reacquaint themselves

with vast rich history.”Volunteers who attended the

clean-up day were given a guided tour of the grounds and monu-ments by resident Glasnevin Trust historian Conor Dodd.

They were also shown an out-line of the work that will be car-ried out by the Glasnevin Trust over the coming year to ensure it will be ready for its reopening in May 2016.

Goldenbridge cemetery is set on just two acres of land and in-corporates many of the classical features that were to dominate the 19th century. Its delineated pathways and high walls create an oasis of tranquillity in what is now the heart of a busy suburb.

Goldenbridge is a 19th cen-tury ‘garden’ cemetery. After the passing of the ‘Act of Easement of Burial Bills’ in 1824, a commit-tee was established to administer the proposed cemetery.

Purchased in 1828, it was the first Catholic cemetery built in Dublin after Catholic Emancipa-tion and was purchased by Daniel O’Connell for £600.

Members of the ‘We Love In-chicore’ and ‘Keogh Square’ community groups arrived at the cemetery in their droves early in the morning to show their sup-port for the Glasnevin Trust and to lend a helping hand.

Locals were disgusted after vandals smashed several burial headstones in the cemetery re-cently.

This followed previous acts of vandalism in the cemetery when 20 old headstones were de-stroyed. And last year the grave of WT Cosgrave was desecrated also.

Established in 1828, Golden-bridge Cemetery is of huge his-toric significance as it was one of the first Catholic cemeteries es-tablished in Ireland after Catholic emancipation in 1828.

The clean-up day was organ-ised as part of larger project

launched by the Glasnevin Trust and Richmond Barracks, who are working in conjunction with the Inchicore Development Associa-tion and Dublin City Council.

The vision is to involve the Goldenbridge cemetery and its history as part of a co-ordinated local development project.

This will involve the reopening of Goldenbridge as a fully operat-ing cemetery for the community following its premature closure in the 1900’s.

George McCullough, CEO of the Glasnevin Trust, said he was truly overwhelmed by the response they had to their clean-up day appeal.

“The people of Inchicore and the surrounding areas have done a fabulous job and we are very grateful,” he said. “Unfortunate-ly the cemetery has been the tar-get of destructive vandalism on a

Coffee morning to brew up funds for hospicesTHE TV and radio broadcaster Claire Byrne helped launch Ire-land’s Biggest Coffee Morning 2015 which aims to brew up funds for Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services and St Francis Hospice.

At the launch Claire issued an appeal for people across Dublin to get involved in the event on Thursday, September 17 and en-joy a Bewley’s coffee to raise vital funds for hospice services across the country.

Supported by Bewley’s, Ire-land’s Biggest Coffee Morning, now in its 23rd year, is one of the biggest annual fundraising initia-tives for local hospices.

Speaking at the launch Claire

said: “I am delighted to be sup-porting Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning this year.

“I was humbled recently to ex-perience at first hand the work and dedication of staff at St Fran-cis Hospice in Raheny and to hear of the amazing work that is being done by hundreds of volunteers in local hospice groups all over Ireland.

“I would urge people across the country to get behind Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning by organ-ising an event for their local hos-pice group or supporting one on the day.”

A recent Irish Hospice Founda-tion survey revealed that three quarters of Irish people want to die at home - but the stark reality

is that only one quarter will get to do so mainly due to lack of hos-pice services and a serious fund-ing crisis. Audrey Houlihan, the CEO of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services said: “Everyone who takes part in Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning by either hosting or attending a coffee morning is helping to raise vital funds for Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services in Harold’s Cross and Blackrock.

“We provided specialist care to over 2,000 individuals in 2014 - a six per cent increase on the previ-ous year and we are committed to meet this growing demand.

“It is ultimately the financial support we receive from the public that ensures that the level and quality of our person centred

services are maintained in these challenging times and we have never needed the help of the local community more.” Ireland’s Big-gest Coffee Morning has become an institution since it first started brewing 23 years ago. Over 16 mil-lion cups of Bewley’s coffee have been enjoyed and an estimated €32 million raised for hospice care nationwide in this period.

All money raised locally at #coffee4hospice events stays lo-cally and goes directly back to fund local hospice care services. Hospice or palliative care is for patients and their families at the stage in a serious illness where the focus has switched from treat-ment aimed at cure to ensuring quality of life.

Running until Wednesday, Sep-tember 30, Wikimedia, the move-ment behind free encyclopaedia Wikipedia, and run in Ireland by the Wikimedia Ireland Communi-ty, the competition aims to raise awareness of Ireland’s national monuments and create a crowd-sourced bank of quality photos that will be free to use for edu-cation.

Amateur and professional pho-tographers are invited to photo-graph the national monuments in their locality and upload their photos to www.wikilovesmonu-ments.ie.

The site includes a listing of each county’s eligible national monuments. This year the list has been expanded from 503 lo-cations to 970 and now includes historic houses and graveyards. Entries will be judged by a three-person expert panel and the win-ners will be announced on Sun-day, November 1.

The top 10 Irish images will then be entered into the interna-

tional competition. Last year the Wiki Loves Monuments competi-tion in Ireland attracted 256 pho-tographers who submitted a total of 2,015 images. The photogra-phers uploaded photographs from a total of 271 different mon-uments and 323 of these images are currently being used in Wiki-pedia articles. Rebecca O’Neill of Wikimedia Ireland said: “After the success of last year, we can’t wait to see what fantastic photos are submitted for this year’s Wiki Loves Monuments competition

“We inspired 256 photogra-phers to get out and photograph their local heritage sites in 2014.

“As a result 2,015 original images were produced and 323 of these images are currently being used in Wikipedia articles.

“Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 has been expanded, so that pho-tographers can choose from a much wider choice of locations, up from 503 to 970. We’ve also in-cluded historic houses and grave-yards among the heritage sites that can be photographed.

“Anyone can take part, so we’re calling on amateur and profes-sional photographers across Ire-land to visit the national monu-ments in their locality, take their best shots and upload them.”

Deirdre said: “It was a heart-breaking summer since my moth-er passed away at the end of July. But the games always lift you up through meeting friends from other countries.

“There is the sheer awesome-ness of the event and seeing my worldwide transplant family liv-ing life to the full thanks to the gift of life given to us by donors who have taken the time to con-sider organ donation and changed someone else’s life forever.”

Bringing with them their im-pressive haul of 13 medals, the four and their team manager re-ceived a rapturous welcome when they finally stepped off the plane after a long journey home.

The kidney and liver transplant recipients were greeted at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 by a large gathering of supporters including family, friends, and fellow trans-plant recipients.

The four, including the only fe-male on the squad, Deirdre Faul, a liver transplant recipient from Dalkey, brought with them the seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals they had won at the games.

Despite the team’s small size, Ireland was placed 15th on the medals table of 44 countries which involved just under 800 or-gan transplant participants.

Colin White, Team Manager and newly elected treasurer of the World Transplant Games Federa-tion described the experience.

“The spirit of our team this week has embodied everything that is good in transplant sport, namely friendship, commitment, support and a deep appreciation for the gift of life that is organ do-nation,” he said.

“When you see the apprecia-tion for life one can’t but be in-spired to make a commitment to make a difference and carry an Organ Donor Card.”

“The impressive medal haul of our team this year had not gone unnoticed by others,” he added. “As well as their medals haul they bring home treasured lifetime memories from their experience at the games where every single participant shares the desire to honour their organ donors and are celebrating life through sport.” Deirdre, a formi-dable racquet ball player, did not relinquish her champion world title in the squash event, secur-ing a gold medal once again for the fifth year in succession at the

IT was the first day back at school for tens of thousands of young students across the country last week and it was a busy day on the Southside too as they made their way back for the new term.

For many of the smaller pupils it was their very first day of their school going lives and in Palm-erstown photographer Darren

Kinsella was there to catch the expressions on some of their lit-tle faces as they took those first steps.

Paddlers set sail for regatta GRAND Canal Dock will be awash with paddlers this week-end for the fifth annual Dublin Dragon Boat Regatta. Some 55 teams will race in the colour-ful two-day event which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13, from 10am to 6pm daily.

Though relatively unknown in

Ireland, over 50 million people from 84 nations participate in dragon boat racing, an exciting and ancient Chinese sport which dates back over 2,000 years.

Dragon boat teams consist of 16 to 20 people, along with a drummer and a helms person.

Races at the regatta will be run over 200-metre and 400-metre distances and will include Under

18s, Novice Challenge and Inter-national categories.

Paddlers from Australia, Amer-ica, Germany, Italy and the UK will be among those travelling to Dub-lin for the regatta. Prizes will be given for the wackiest team outfit and for the biggest fundraisers.

A Breast Cancer category will feature many of the growing number of teams that have sprung

up around the country where the members are recovering from breast cancer treatment.

These include Ireland’s first dragon boat team - Plurabelle Paddlers, which trains at Grand Canal Dock, and will be co-host-ing the regatta with the Irish Dragon Boat Association (IDBA). Waterways Ireland is supporting the event.

Kelly Clarkson returns to Dublin for headline showIT has recently been an-nounced that Kelly Clarkson will return to Dublin to play a headline show at 3Arena on November 10.

The Grammy Award-win-ner has released six studio al-bums (Thankful, Breakaway, My December, All I Ever Wanted, Stronger, Piece By Piece), one Greatest Hits album, one holiday album; has sold over 20 million albums worldwide; and has had 10 singles in the Top 10 on the

Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. She is the recipient of three

Clarkson’s last studio effort Stronger was certified platinum, won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and produced the smash singles, ‘Mr Know It All’ and ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),’ which marks Kelly’s 9th and 10th Top 10 hits.

‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ was No 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart for two consecutive weeks (three weeks total) mark-ing her third number 1 on the Hot 100 Chart.

In 2013, Kelly released her very first Christmas album ‘Wrapped In Red’, which is cer-tified platinum and debuted at number 3 marking the biggest holiday album debut for a fe-male since 2010.

Don’t miss the Texan starlet in action in Dublin.

The Perfect debut for Shane and Jessie

SHANE Richie and Jessie Wal-lace are to appear on stage together for the very first time in the 2016 production of The Perfect Murder.

Opening at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham in Febru-ary, The Perfect Murder will then embark on a major tour that will take in the Bord Gáis Energy The-atre from February 15 to 20.

The show focuses on Victor Smiley and his wife Joan who have been married for a long time. Their marriage has reached crisis point and Victor has de-cided there is only one way to get Joan out of his life forever but he’s about to get a nasty sur-prise.

As a young Detective Roy

Grace starts to investigate his very first homicide case, dark forces intervene and Grace be-gins to fear that nothing is quite as it seems quite as it seems

Directed by Olivier Award winner Ian Talbot and adapted by award winning writer Shaun McKenna, this highly acclaimed dark comedy thriller delighted and frightened audiences in 2014, with its darkly funny and gripping storyline.

International bestselling crime thriller novelist Peter James has had numerous No 1 best sellers around the world, has sold over 16 million books of his Roy Grace series, and is published in 36 lan-guages.

The Perfect Murder spent 15 weeks at No 1, remaining for 50

weeks in the iBooks Top 10 “It has always been my dream

that one day the curtains would rise in a theatre and a play of my work would be performed,” James said. “That dream came true in 2014 after a chance meet-ing with my old friend, producer, Joshua Andrews.

“The first run of The Perfect Murder was a sell out success and we have followed that this year with an even more success-ful run of my best-selling book Dead Simple. To now have Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace star in The Perfect Murder really is an-other dream come true. Shane has been a fan of my books for a while, as I have been of Shane.

“He and Jessie have been loved on television by huge audiences

over a number of years, which just goes to show how great they are together and I can’t wait to see Shane and Jessie planning to murder each other on stage every night.”

Shane and Jessie will be star-ring in The Perfect Murder during their break from EastEnders. The award winning actors, who have starred together in EastEnders for the last 13 years are also both well known for their numerous other TV and theatre credits, and they are equally excited by their upcoming stage debut together.

The Perfect Murder is adapted by Shaun McKenna from the nov-el by Peter James, directed by Ian Talbot, booked by The Booking Office and produced by Joshua Andrews and Peter James.

Club and The Swamp, with sev-eral other young people from different Foróige clubs in Dub-lin, are working on Leadership for Life Programme & National Citizenship Award projects. The Smile Station will be an informa-tion stand set up in public areas where people donate money in return for a compliment in aid of Pieta House and hopefully leav-ing smiles all round! The second

project is known as Reach Out Crossroads: a Facebook page set up and managed by the team of young people, to point parents of children with a diagnosis of SLNs (Special Learning Needs) in the right direction.

Team Lucan Juniors Club for 10-12-year-olds is preparing their Cit-izenship Project to raise funds to buy toys for Crumlin and Tallaght Children’s Hospital in September.

Foróige are looking for vol-unteers who have previous ex-perience as a teenager or ra ole model, who place a high value on allowing young people to discover their greatest potentials.

For further information about becoming a Foróige volunteer, contact Claire Hutchinson, Regional Youth Officer for South Dublin on 0851666945.

Why Foróige is a force of good for all young people

meet during a weekday evening, for between one and three hours. Each club will cater for a specific age category.

Foróige, in partnership with Aldi are working together on the 2015 National Citizenship Awards Programme. This year members of The Swamp Foróige Club Tem-pleogue, Knocklyon Club, Team Lucan Juniors Club and Lucan Seniors Foróige Club are entrants for their citizenship projects.

The Swamp Foróige Club (15-18-year-olds) are putting the finish-ing touches to a newly refurbished and designed storage space in their club’s venue, St Michael’s House Templeogue, which will benefit their club, other centre users and the facility itself.

The Swamp Club were finalists in the 2014 National Citizenship Awards Programme with their teen band music showcase night project, which raised over €1,000 in aid of Pieta House. Young mem-bers from the Knocklyon Foróige

Our purpose is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the develop-ment of society.

We work with 56,000 young people aged 10-18 each year through volunteer-led clubs and staff-led youth projects.

Foróige currently operates in 26 counties in Ireland, with 611 Foróige Clubs, 137 youth projects, the Big Brothers Big Sis-ters mentoring programme, the Foróige Youth Entrepreneurship programme, our Youth Citizen-ship and Youth Leadership pro-grammes.

Foróige’s bedrock and history is based on volunteerism, working side by side with the other youth programmes and initiatives.

Clubs in South Dublin are based

in Lucan, Palmerstown, Walkin-stown, Drimnagh, Templeogue, Knocklyon, Ballinteer, Goats-town, Stillorgan/Kilmacud, Dun Laoghaire and Shankill.

Our ethos is to enable young people to develop themselves consciously and actively and to enable them to develop their own society.

Club activities range from learning how to DJ, beekeeping, The Cube, Warhammer, jewellry making, learning about CPR, mov-ie nights, baking workshops, or-ganising a local bed push to raise funds and awareness of Cystic Fi-brosis and in between times hang-ing out and having fun.

Foróige clubs run from Sep-tember to June normally, meet-ing in community spaces and are entirely volunteer led. The clubs

Spectacular costal walk is open againONE of Ireland’s most dramatic coastal walks is open again fol-lowing a multi-million pound investment programme.

The Gobbins is a reimagined version of a ‘best kept secret’ along the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland.

It’s 40 minutes from Belfast and the reopened attraction is a dramatic two mile long cliff-face walk with spectacular bridges, tunnels and staircases, support-ed by a visitor centre and guided tours.

The Gobbins is located in scenic Islandmagee and it was originally built in the early 20th century.

It takes visitors along a spec-tacular cliff-face path not for the faint hearted and it’s an un-expected, white-knuckle walk across one of Ulster’s most dra-matic coastlines.

Guided tours along the new

path will allow adventurous visi-tors to enjoy the coast of the Irish Sea in a way they have not been able to in over 50 years.

The new experience is de-signed to excite all the senses, and it’s the closest visitors will

get to walking on water as they hear the waves crashing against the cliffs, feel the spray of the sea on their face and witness the ever-changing flora and fauna along the route.

The re-envisioned Gobbins

will continue with the tradition of innovation and bring back to life the spectacular tubular and suspension bridges that hung from the cliff-face and staircas-es, caves and tunnels that were carved through the rock.

Built alongside the eroded re-mains of the original path, the new experience uses modern materials and methods, coupled with the original design ethos, as if Berkeley Deane Wise was build-ing it today.

A new visitor centre located a short distance away from the route is where the expedition

starts. After a brief safety in-duction, visitors are transported down to the path and guided on their journey.

Interpretation inside the visi-tor centre will tell visitors about the making of The Gobbins, as well as the geology and ecology of Islandmagee.

Fiona Cunningham from Tour-ism Northern Ireland said: “We are very excited with the reopen-ing.

“It is one of Northern Ireland’s most unique attractions and is something that visitors from the Republic of Ireland should defi-

nitely pay a visit to.“The new website (www.

thegobbinscliffpath.com) has just been launched and it is a hub of information for visitors detailing the attraction’s history - from its conception in 1902, its demise in 1954, to its journey back to life in 2015; what it has to offer; news; events and online booking information; plus it will assist people in planning their trip.”

The Gobbins is open daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm. For further information on planning a visit go to www.discovernorthernireland.com.

The walk is open again following a multi-million pound investment programme.▪

Beautiful Lake Garda is an arresting spectacleI’m looking to book a last minute family trip abroad. My wife and I would love to go

somewhere beautiful with warm weather, where we can swim and there is plenty of other outdoor activities to keep our kids entertained.

Do you have any suggestions as to where we should go?

Lake Garda, a luxury Lake District in the north of Italy, is the ideal spot for anyone in search of

sunshine and a family friendly des-tination with a difference.

With stunning scenery, plenty to see and do, and the warm Mediter-ranean climate, Lake Garda has long been a firm holiday favourite in Europe.

At 52km long, Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and given the expanse of water, it’s no wonder the lake’s shores have become a haven for water sports fans.

Torbole at the north end of the lake is a well-known watersports spot and is the perfect place to hone your skills on the lake, what-ever your level.

Offering a range of activities such as windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing, this energetic enter-tainment is guaranteed to keep all the family having fun!

The Lake Garda landscape is rich and diverse with majestic mountainous backdrops offering a unique opportunity for exploring.

Try something new while you’re away with a thrilling canyoning ad-venture through Alto Garda Bresi-cano, a national park in Italy, with the SkyClimber Company.

Discover the distinct flora and fauna at home in the national park to see yet another side to the re-gion.

For even more exciting activi-ties, treat the family with a day trip to Gardaland theme park. Known as one of the most popular amuse-ment parks in Europe, the exhila-

rating roller-coasters, Mammut and Blue Tornado, are major draws to the park for thrill-seekers.

When you’re ready for a break from the rides, pay a visit to the extensive aquarium in Gardaland Sea-Life.

Enjoy a quieter time and some well-deserved relaxation in the small town of Malcesine. Situated at the foot of Mount Baldo, this quaint Italian town is particularly beautiful and well worth a visit.

Climb to the top of the historic Malcesine Castle, for a panoramic view overlooking Lake Garda. With narrow cobbled streets, pebbled beaches, and a scenic harbour rife with restaurants, there’s no deny-ing the appeal of this simply stun-ning town.

In true Italian fashion wind down your day in the town centre, with a glass of good Italian wine, or a scoop of gelato and watch the sun go down over Lake Garda.

When it comes to wonderful weather, outdoor entertainment and magnificent scenery, it seems that Lake Garda has it all and lots more!

Sandra’s album will be launched at a concert in the John Field Room of the National Concert Hall on September 23 at 8pm and will feature an outstanding line up of Irish opera stars including John Molloy, tenors Owen Gilhooly and Mark Duff and baritone Simon Morgan.

the granDeur oFDeluSionS ForDunDrum

The Grandeur of Delusions by Hugh Murphy features actors Noelle Brogan and Aaron Jenner, both Southsiders who attended school locally where they acquired their life long love for drama.

The Grandeur of Delusions is a monologue play for two people – which is an obvious contradiction – but which, in this case is depressingly true.

It depicts an alcoholic talking to himself through the medium of his delusion, a girl. The absence of love and hugs is sufficient to manifest itself in Oblivion Drinking, as they try to fill the void of ‘lacking’ which they don’t understand – and which only the temporary solution of blackouts can redress , and relieve their suffering .

This play deals in an ironic and funny fashion with the trials and tribulations of families in desperation.

It is performed by the Heart &Soul Theatre Company from September

9 to 12 at 8.15pm in Maureen O’Hara Studio of the Mill Theatre, Dundrum.

The truth about dental implantsMANY people would like to have implants but are ap-prehensive about the surgi-cal procedure involved.

This is a shame because it is definitely the ultimate procedure available for not only replacing missing teeth but for also retaining the jawbone and therefore, the shape of one’s face.

They are, of course, through the various clip-on systems, invaluable for securely retaining dentures and make loose lower dentures a thing of the past.

The good news for those apprehensive patients who may be a little squeamish about the surgery involved is that a new modality for the Memory Invasive Implantation Insertion (MIMI) is available with the Champion Implant System from Germany (www.mimi-info.com).

Using this technique, the scalpel stays in the drawer and no sutures are required. Obviously the implant is still inserted into the bone but unlike teeth there are very few nerves in it, and therefore, the procedure will be totally comfortable and easy.

For further expert information, contact dental surgeon Liam O Droma, who is based on Harbour Road, Howth. Phone 01-8395254, email [email protected] or visit www.orthocosmetics.ie

how to apply for your water grant QUEStION

I registered with Irish Water earlier this year. How do I ap-ply for the Water Conservation Grant?

ANSWEREvery household that registered

its principal private dwelling (main home) with Irish Water by June 30 2015 is eligible for the Water Con-servation Grant in 2015. The pay-ment is €100 and will issue from September 2015.

Households that registered after June 30 2015, or have yet to regis-ter, are not eligible for the grant in 2015.

By the end of September 2015, all eligible households will get a letter from the Department of So-cial Protection explaining how to apply for the Water Conservation Grant. You cannot apply for it until

you have received this letter. When you get your letter, you apply on-line on watergrant.ie. You must ap-ply before October 8 2015.

You will need the following in-formation to apply for your Water Conservation Grant:

•TIN (Transaction Identifica-tion Number) – you will find this number on the letter you received from the Department.

•WPRN (Water Point Reference Number) – a number specific to your house, which you will also find on the letter from the Depart-ment.

Irish Water account or registra-tion number – you got this when you registered with Irish Water. If you have your own water supply and wastewater services, you will have a registration number instead of an account number. Contact Irish Water directly if you cannot

find these numbers.•Your PPS number.•Details of the bank or other

account into which you want your grant to be paid (BIC, IBAN and ac-count name) – you will find these on recent bank statements.

Cycling offencesQUEStION

I’m a regular cyclist. What are the new cycling offences and what are the fines?

ANSWERLike other road users, cyclists

must obey the existing rules that apply to traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, zebra crossings and cycle traffic lights. You must stop at stop signs and give way at yield signs.

There are also rules about the equipment a bicycle must have. These rules are set out in various laws and regulations.

There are no new cycling offences but, since July 31 2015, certain cy-cling offences have been declared to be fixed charge offences. The fixed charge system allows you to pay a fixed charge or fine instead of going to court to answer the offence.

The cycling offences to which a fixed charge applies are:

•No front or rear light during lighting-up hours

•Riding a bicycle without reason-able consideration

•Failing to stop for a school war-den sign

•Failing to stop at traffic lights when the red lamp is lit

•Failing to stop at cycle traffic lights when the red lamp is lit

•Failing to stop at a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway level crossing, swing bridge or lift-ing bridge, when the red lamps are flashing

•Cycling in a pedestrianised street or area

The fixed charge for a cycling offence is currently €40. If it is not paid within 28 days, the charge is increased by 50 per cent. If it is still unpaid after a further 28 days then court proceedings are initiated.

If you pay the fixed charge within the legal time limits and court pro-ceedings are not commenced, you will not have a criminal record in respect of the offence.

IT’S not just the kids who need to adjust to getting back to school according to pet store chain, Maxi Zoo, who say pet parents should also be thinking about teaching old dogs new tricks.

This month Maxi Zoo in Finglas is running a campaign to give dog owners a few lessons in caring for our adorable bundles of fur.

Maxi Zoo’s team of pet experts will be on hand at the store in Clearwater Retail Park throughout the coming weeks to freely educate and advise dog owners who want to learn how to teach an old dog new tricks and how to correct past mistakes.

It’s back to school for pet parents at Maxi Zoo this month

time to teach old dogs new tricks

“It’s never too late for you or your pet to learn,” says Alice Cross, Executive Director of Maxi Zoo Ireland.

“Just drop by the store with your pet and our pet experts will talk you through the simple things that you can do to make learning fun for you and your dog.

“Patience and proper motivation are very important but understanding how to use a clicker is just one of the practical things that you can do to speed up the rate at which your dog learns new tricks.

“A clicker is an ideal training aid. It allows you to acknowledge positive steps as they occur and promises your dog a reward. Unlike the human voice, it always sounds the same.

“Press the clicker and give your dog a treat immediately afterwards. Once you have done this around 20 times, your dog will have learned to associate the sound with a treat and reward.”

Maxi Zoo’s pet experts will also provide free advice on

the length of time pet parents should practice learning tricks with their pets like playing dead, rolling over and weaving, while also providing tips on how to finish pet training on a high so that their dog stays keen to play and learn.

“Clear communication is also essential,” adds Cross.

“Our pet experts can also talk through the value of single word commands and the importance of communicating using as much body language as possible.

“Pet parents can learn how to understand and read their dog’s body language.

“They will also discover the

value of putting themselves in their dog’s place to understand why their pet reacts the way it does and to work out how to get rid of bad habits.”

Maxi Zoo has also prepared a series of training guides for pet parents that are available at all stores nationwide.

They can also be downloaded

from www.maxizoo.ie. Pet parents can also view

video training tips on Maxi Zoo’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/maxizooireland.

How can fleas and ticks becombatted naturally?During the warmer months, lots of cats bring fleas and ticks home from their rambles, although indoor cats are rarely affected. Acute cases of fleas or ticks should be dealt with quickly as the parasites can transmit diseases and worms. You can treat an acute case of fleas, ticks or mites by using natural spot-on products, for example. If your cat has fleas, it makes sense to de-worm her and treat the environment around her too. We recommend using effective prevention against these troublesome guests in the first place to avoid a potential infestation. Our Pet Experts are trained in all aspects of hygiene and grooming, call in store today to speak with them on your pets specific needs.

DEMENTIA care expert, Molly Carpen-ter, officially launched her first book for Irish caregivers, ‘Confidence to Care’, at a recent book signing event in Airfield, Dundrum.

Molly’s book was created to help Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers look after loved ones at home.

It combines personal stories with practical techniques drawn from expe-riences from family caregivers, profes-sional caregivers and internationally recognised experts.

The book also focuses on the most common issues associated with Alzhe-imer’s disease and other dementias and helps family carers deal with caregiving situations they never thought they would have to face. Each chapter offers plenty of care approaches and prevention tips, and begin with a relevant and moving

real-life family caregiver story. The book launch and signing was host-

ed by Home Instead Senior Care, Dublin’s largest home care provider.

About 44,000 people in Ireland are liv-ing with Alzheimer’s disease - a number that is expected to reach 104,000 by 2037. There are over 50,000 family car-egivers whose lives are affected as each day they care for a loved one that needs their support.

As of this moment, there is no way to cure someone with Alzheimer’s and care providers therefore encourage families to think of how to care, rather than cure their loved ones living with a dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Speaking at the book launch, Molly shared some of her own personal car-egiving insights.

“Caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other types of

dementia is challenging at best,” she said.

“In the beginning, taking care of that person will be maddening and frustrat-

ing and terrible. And frankly, you won’t be very good at it. I wasn’t at the start. So how do you stay in control but still al-low your loved one to maintain dignity?

My answer has turned more pragmatic over the years. You do it by listening.

“I’ve found the best caregivers are the ones who give themselves permission to enter into the world of the person they’re caring for. What that means is looking for signs - the life someone once led, their passions, daily routines, and memories, all still matter. But now they are more important than ever.”

Confidence to Care also highlights the importance of the caring for the car-egiver as well as caring for the person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. It also provides support in dealing with a range of dementia-related symptoms and behaviours.

All profits from this book will be do-nated to dementia-related organisations and causes. The Irish edition of the book is available in paperback and Kindle edi-tion from Amazon.co.uk.

‘Ireland’s Harp: The Shaping of Irish Identity c 1770 to 1880’THE Irish harp in various shapes and sizes, surmounted by a crown or phrases in Irish or English, and set against a blue or green background, has been a mediating symbol between Irish and colonial cul-tures for centuries.

Although the iconic instru-ment was first employed on Irish coinage minted in England in the sixteenth century, its importance as a symbol of Irish music and culture predates this by several hundred years.

Since the eighteenth cen-tury, the popularity of the harp icon on the flags and insignia of various political and cultural movements has secured the in-strument’s status as a significant

marker of national identity. ‘Ire-land’s Harp: the Shaping of Irish Identity c 1770 to 1880’ brings to light the monumen-tal importance of this instru-ment by high-lighting the central place the harp oc-cupied in the formation and expression of Ireland’s cul-tural and national identity in this period.

Ireland’s Harp, which is exten-sively illustrated, examines the importance of the harp icon in the visual politics of the Volun-teer movement and the United Irishmen in the latter half of the

eighteenth century. In the early nineteenth century,

O’Donnell focuses on how writers including Thomas Moore and

Sydney Owenson used the harp metaphor in their

literary works and songs to represent the Irish people. In songs such as ‘The Minstrel Boy’

and ‘The Harp That Once Through Tara’s Halls’ by Moore, the harp was

used as the symbol of an op-pressed nation, an enslaved peo-ple and a shattered civilisation.

From the 1830s onwards, an im-age of a harp similar to the oldest extant Irish harp, the Brian Boru or Trinity College harp, gradually replaced the winged-maiden harp icon.

This type of harp, often referred to as a plain harp because of the absence of the winged-maiden design, was a recurring image in the iconography of various politi-cal and revolutionary movements, including the Repeal Association, the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Land League.

One of the most important periods in this evolution was be-tween 1770 and 1880. In these years, the instrument became central to many utopian visions of an autonomous Irish nation and eventually the harp’s meta-phoric significance eclipsed its musical one. From the revolu-tionary symbolism of the harp to the cultural curiosities that were the blind Irish harpers, the many permutations of Ireland’s harp are thoroughly examined.

Scientific data has shown changes in sebum to be one of the key causes in the development of acne, resulting in changing lipid levels and squalene oxidation which produce pimples, blemishes and imperfections in the skin. Equipped with this knowledge, Bioderma laboratories have developed a formula to target these imbalances in problem skin – with the unique, patented complex, Fluidactiv. The Biordema Sébium H20 Micellar Water is the first make-up removing micellar water developed specifically for combination or oily skin and contains the range’s exclusive Fluidactiv patent to regulate sebum quality and prevent pores from clogging. Enriched with purifying agents like zinc gluconate and copper sulphate, Sébium H20 micellar water purifies the skin and limits sebaceous secretion, leaving the skin feeling thoroughly cleansed and refreshed. Available in pharmacies nationwide.

Learning to studyIF YOUR child or teenager’s idea of exam preparation is staying up all night cramming for the week before the test then he or she needs to take a few lessons in study.Studying is obviously one of the most important subjects for students but amazingly most schools and colleges don’t offer any classes in how to actually do it.

Studying isn’t easy because it’s something you have to mo-tivate yourself to do. There’s no teacher watching over you and no doubt your study environ-ment is full of distractions like TVs and game consoles.

Add to that the temptation to hang out with friends and the fact that exam time always seems to be ages away and it’s easy to understand why cram-ming is still the most popular way to study. But it’s certainly not the best.

Good, regular study usually means rewards with good re-sults and definitely less stress levels at exam time.

There’s no hard and fast rules for study so you have to create your own. First, set aside a spe-cific time to study.

Many students find it easy to come home, have something to eat, then study right away.

But you might find that this interferes with some other ac-

tivity that you like so you’ll need to find what works for you.

Try to study every day. If you don’t have assignments to do, take a few minutes to review subjects that you find hardest. There’s no success or failure in study but putting aside some time every day helps cultivate a habit and actually makes study-ing easier.

Create your own study space. If you don’t have a desk in your room, or if the dining room ta-ble doesn’t give you enough peace, consider going to the lo-

Good, regular study is better than cramming it all into a weekend and ending up exhausted.▪

background music that doesn’t make you want to play the drums on your books, it’s probably not too distracting. However, if you keep wanting to leap from the chair to try out the latest dance moves, turn it off.

cal library or taking up a corner of a seldom used room.

Don’t do other things while you are studying. This includes watching TV, fixing a snack, and talking on the phone. Some people claim they can study better with music playing but it’s really a matter of personal preference.

If it’s just quiet background music that doesn’t make you want to play the drums on your books, it’s probably not too distracting. However, if you keep wanting to leap from the chair to try out the latest dance moves, turn it off.

If you have a lot of reading to do to prepare for a test, try taking notes as you go along. Otherwise, you’ll find your mind wandering.

Homework or study shouldn’t take up all of your spare time. If you find one teacher is giving out hours of homework all the time, it could be that they don’t realise it takes so long. Talk

to your teacher, or to another teacher you can approach and alert them to the amount of time your homework is taking up.

Finally, ask for help if you

need it.Teachers and friends are

usually willing to go over something with you again if you didn’t quite get it the first time.

at a time and don’t mouth them.

Read as though you’re skim-

ming for information, not as though you are practising a speech you plan to recite. Your brain can read faster than your mouth. Speed and comprehen-sion will increase if you read in meaningful phrases.

3) Figure out ‘why’ you are reading the material.

Establish a context by begin-ning with an overview of the material. This will improve your comprehension and retention. Begin by reading the introduc-tion, headings, charts, graphs, diagrams, conclusion, and sum-mary. Then take a minute to think about the material before beginning to read in depth.

4) read with a purpose. Don’t just begin reading. Be-

fore you read ask yourself some questions and then note the answers or the most important points where they occur. Estab-lish a list of questions, either by turning the headings into ques-tions, or by looking at your class

notes. Then read with the inten-tion of answering these ques-tions.

Check the margins when you think you’ve found answers. It’s better not to take notes, high-light, or underline at this point; you won’t know which are the most important points until you are finished.

Read through the material again and focus on your checks in the margin while deciding which points are the most important. It is only at this point where you will be able to make an informed opinion and then highlight or take notes of the material.5) turn your reading mate-rial into a study tool.

You’ve bought the books - so use them. Since you don’t have to give them back feel free to mark them up, highlight pas-sages, and write notes in them. Write your questions in the margins, opposite the answers. Regularly review the material by covering the page and answering the questions.

Fresh, new approach to English exam a new approach to preparing for the english leaving Cert is empowering students and giving them an edge for one of the most important exams of their lives.

Orlaith Fitzpatrick, who is behind the initiative, says she started up her intensive grinds course for one simple reason.

“Through my years of teaching I have noticed that most students fall down when ‘analysing the question’,” she explains.

“All too often a student, through nerves or inexperience, will hand the examiner the ‘plot’ of a text without ever really addressing the ‘question’ they have been asked.

“This is both disheartening and exhausting for an examiner because they are looking for the student’s interpretation.

“In other grinds schools, emphasis is placed on giving students reams of notes. I give notes but just the essentials.”

Unlike many other grinds schools Orlaith - who has lots of experience correcting State exams - sets essays for students and believes essay writing every week is the only way a student can gain confidence and ability.

“It’s all practice, practice, practice and I am more than happy to correct essays to show students where they have faltered and how to improve their style for June,” she explains.

“The crying shame is that students generally know the answer but they stumble with

getting in onto the page in a clear and cohesive way. And that’s where I come in!

“My goal is to give students the confidence through essay planning and writing to abandon their inherent need to ‘tell the story’ and trust that the examiner is much more interested in their interpretation of the question.

“Students will learn to be fearless and logical in their approach.”

orlaith Fitzpatrick can be contacted on 087-7864348 or email [email protected]

Get ready to readMost students open their

books, read until they finish, lose interest or fall asleep. Then they convince themselves that their concentration, comprehension, and speed are poorer than every-one else’s.

If this sounds familiar, take heart, you are not alone. You need to recognise that reading may be the most demanding work that you will be required to do and that nearly everyone re-ports difficulty with the volume of reading assigned to them.

So how are you supposed to get through that mountain of reading?

The first thing to keep in mind is that no one realistically expects you to read every single item that is given to you.

This is just not possible, unless of course you don’t eat or sleep. Once you realise that this is the case you need to turn your atten-tion to trying to make your read-ing more effective so that you are able to recall what you’ve read.

Reading from cover to cover won’t help you to retain infor-mation. You have to realise that you’re not reading a novel, you are collecting information. The following tips are designed to help you become a more effec-tive reader.

1) read the material more oFten But For shorter pe-riods oF time.

Most students can read for 20 to 30 minutes without los-ing concentration. Studies have shown that learning is improved by changing tasks each hour, spreading the work over time and dipping into it more frequently.

2) read groups oF words

toyota Auris ticks all the boxes for C Segment drivers

people, but leg room for the back seat passengers is just about ad-equate. The dash is dominated by the impressive-looking infotain-ment screen. Maybe I’m old fash-ioned, but I would have preferred regular buttons rather than plus and minutes logos for the sound on the radio. But to be fair to the manufacturers the seven-inch infotainment has a modern look

to it and naturally Toyota wanted to go with ‘touch screen’ to tie in with the very attractive flat black piano glass finish.

Apart from the infotainment screen the rest of the interior is a bit dark. However, there were no complaints about the external look as the test car came in a very attractive shade of denim-blue.

At the back you get a reversing

camera and there is a very neat wiper on the rear window. The

Irish motorists are looking for.’’Prices start at €20,750 and

road tax starts at €180. As usual with Toyota the Auris is avail-able in four trims: Terra, Aura and Luna and Sol. I drove the top of the range Sol version which had very attractive 17-inch al-loys, rear privacy glass and a few other extras like ‘lane departure warning.’

Of course as it’s a Toyota you can be assured that residuals will be a good when you decide to trade it in at some stage in the future. Also available in a 1.8-li-tre hybrid where prices start at €24,990.

Last week Toyota announced that they had now sold 8 million hybrid cars worldwide since the launch of the first Prius hybrid in 1997.

The man in the recycling de-pot thought that the rear lights were a bit odd looking, but apart from that everybody else I met last week was impressed with the makeover that Toyota has given to their Auris.

Toyota has given their best-sell-ing Avensis and the smaller Auris a mid-life revamp and the latter now has a completely new look in the front, with a new bumper, grille and lights. And the rear lights cluster, while a bit bulky looking, certainly stood out, even

in the recycling centre. There are several new en-

gines including the 1.2-litre turbo charged petrol version with 116 brake horse power, which seems to be the most popular. It’s a powerful, yet frugal engine.

On the road the Auris drives very well and the road handling reminded me of the Ford Focus. The Focus and the VW Golf are probably the main rivals for the Auris in this the so called C sec-tor.

I WAS speaking to a former colleague on the phone last week and her first comment went something like this: ‘‘are you driv-ing any fancy cars lately?’’ I replied that while it might not be fancy, the revamped Toyota Auris I was testing was dif-ferent.

WALLPAPERING:

START SIMPLE:If you’re a novice at wall-

papering your best bet is to choose a relatively basic paper pattern that’s easy to ‘match’. Intricate patterns - like flowers or rainbows - can lead to frus-tration, discarded paper or a mismatched wall. Keep it simple until you get confident with your paper-hanging skills.

TAKE A PASTING:Pour your wallpaper paste

into a paint tray and use a roller to apply. Twice as quick, half as messy.

FAIL TO PREPARE. . .:You’ll get a better finish if you

fill all the cracks between door frames and skirtings and the walls before hanging the paper. Spend five minutes rubbing the walls down, especially if you have removed old wallpaper.

THICK OR THIN:A good indication of whether

the paste is strong enough is to dip the paste brush into the paste and then lay the brush on the paper. When you lift the brush the paper should stay stuck to it.

A GOOD SOAK:Make sure you soak the paper

for at least as long as the manu-facturer states or it’ll continue to expand when it has been hung, causing the seams to push up and blistering. Soak each length of paper for the same amount of time. This is less critical with vi-nyl papers.

PASTE WASTE:Keep a sponge and a bucket

of water to hand to clean any excess paste off the wallpaper as you go. If you don’t, it’ll show and if left on white emulsion it’ll turn yellow.

BUBBLE TROUBLE:Got bubbles or blisters be-

hind your paper? Be patient as in the majority of cases they’ll disappear. Bubbles take longer to vanish when hanging vinyl paper on painted walls in a hu-

mid area. One way of getting rid of stubborn bubbles is to cut the bubble in a + shape with a very sharp knife and then paste be-hind and use a sponge to gently press the paper back into place.

TALL TALE:If you want to make your room

look taller, use a paper with ver-tical stripes. Horizontal stripes will make a room look wider.

ELECTRIC SHOCK:To get the perfect finish

around electrical fittings, like light switches and plug sockets, switch the power off and remove the face plates. Hang the paper as normal, then cut out about a quarter of an inch from the out-side of the fitting. When you re-wire and replace the face plate you will have the perfect finish.

LAPPING:Use a wood or border glue

when overlapping paper, espe-cially vinyls, and the paper will never come unstuck. Always use border glue if you are putting the border on a vinyl or glossy surface.

CARPET CARE:Protect your carpets from

paint along skirtings and door frames with low residue masking tape. Leave the tape down until the next day so the paint has dried. Before pulling the tape up, use your fingers to break the paint seal by pulling the tape at 90 degrees away from the skirt-ing to stop it ripping.

DON’T DRIP:To avoid spills and drips place

a small amount of paint in the middle of a paper plate. Place your paint can on the plate. The plate will stick to the can and catch any drippings.

COLOUR CLEVER:When decorating touch the

But what’s often missing is the expert advice that makes the difference between a dodgy looking job and a quality finish.

Here are some professional painting and wallpapering tips that’ll make your home look like a work of art.

PAINTING:

KEEP IT BRIGHT:When painting the outside of

your house avoid dark colours. They absorb heat easily and are much more prone to blistering.

STICKY PROBLEM:If you’ve just painted a door

and are worried about it sticking - as they tend to do – just wait for it to dry and rub the edges with a candle before closing.

SKIN DEEP:If you have a tin of paint you

need to keep, turn it upside down before storing (make sure the lid is fixed firmly). This’ll re-

move the need for cutting away a skin when you use it again.

PAINT PONG:If the smell of fresh paint gets

to you, cut an onion in half and leave it in the room to take away most of the smell. A teaspoonful of vanilla essence stirred into the paint also helps remove a lot of odour without affecting the colour.

LIGHT COVER:Cover wall lights with a plastic

carrier bag when painting. It’ll save you hours of cleaning time.

ROLL UP:If you have finished with your

emulsion roller and brush for the day, wrap them tightly in a carrier bag and they’ll stay soft and usable for up to a month.

BRUSH OFF:Hard brushes can be rejuve-

nated after a spell in hot vinegar. Comb the bristles with a fork af-

Today’s popular decorating styles allow for creativity and choice when decorating the fire-place mantle. Eclectic decorating offers opportunities to decorate with an informal mix of deco-rative items, which can be dis-played many different ways.

A traditional interior will look better with a formal balanced arrangement. A contemporary decor should keep the mantle simple with just a few items of importance.

Pull out your treasures and add some items for height and interest that complements your colour scheme and style. Before you know it, you’ll have a beauti-ful fireplace mantle.

EVEN if you never actually get to light a real fire, the fireplace is probably the centrepiece of your home and the mantle is an ideal place to show off small collections and family treasures.
