MOTHER and daughter duo, Hannah Corcoran and Ursula Kelly, who also happen to be top models, led the way as over 250 women gathered in Dublin to complete the VHI’s Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

The charity, which supports families affected by SADS (Sud-den Adult Death Syndrome) ap-pealed for runners to ‘run for CRY’s sake’ and help raise much needed funds for CRY Ireland.

year in a row, and each year it gets better, according to Ursula.

“Every year we take part in the Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of CRY Ireland as it’s such a worthy charity,” she said. “So many fam-ilies are affected by SADS each year and they need all the sup-port they can get.

“It is a small charity that helps so many people and I am so proud to support it each year by doing the mini marathon. Many of the women who took part today on

behalf of CRY have been affected by Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in some way and that makes the day even more poignant.”

As the charity’s biggest fund-raiser, monies raised from the mini marathon will be used to fund the activities of the Centre for Cardiac Risk in Younger Per-sons (CRYP) in Tallaght Hospital which provides comprehensive cardiac evaluation of those who may be at risk from SCD, either because of family history or wor-

marathon team for charityrying symptoms.

Funds raised from this year’s mini marathon will also help raise awareness of the conditions that cause SADS and will go towards genetic counselling. This support service is offered to victims and relatives of victims to help them understand and deal with the risks, options and reality of the

presence of the genetic disorder in their family.

The service provided at the CRYP Centre in Tallaght Hospi-tal is available to anyone in the country (via a GP referral) and is free to the patient. The centre currently receives no direct Gov-ernment funding.

Orla Durkan from CRY said:

“This is one of our biggest fund-raising events of the year and we depend heavily on this to ensure we can continue to provide the free screening service in Tallaght Hospital.

“Often smaller charities are forgotten about when it comes to events like this, but luckily for us we have a growing number of

supporters each year who help us support up to 100 families who have lost a young son, daughter, brother or sister.

“The funds we raise today will also go towards screening any-one who may have lost a relative to SADS. We are so proud and thankful to everyone who ran for CRY Ireland today.”

choice; others will be looking at the vast array of post Leaving Certificate courses on offer, possibly as a stepping stone to third level education in the future.

Some will opt for traditional appren-ticeships with a view to entering the workplace sooner. Those who don’t get the results they are expecting should take comfort in the fact that there are plenty of alternatives out there, including the

option to repeat. For the first time since 2008, there is

growing optimism that Ireland is over the worst effects of its deep recession and the economy is recovering. In the past seven years, there was a foreboding sense that the Leaving Certificate was simply prepar-ing our children for export.

However, there is every reason to be hopeful that those currently sitting their

exams will represent a new generation of young people who are not forced to emi-grate through necessity.

By all means they should travel the world and work abroad if they wish – but as a lifestyle choice and with the expecta-tion of coming home to a lasting, fulfill-ing career. Large multinationals often cite our highly educated workforce as a factor in their decision to locate in Ireland (al-

ways seems to get a bigger mention than our favourable corporate tax rate!). With unemployment now below the important psychological 10 per cent barrier, those now sitting their Leaving Certificate can be reasonably optimistic that their fu-ture here is starting to look that little bit brighter.

I hope our Government gives them good reason to stay.

Given the deluge we experienced over the June bank holiday weekend, those sit-ting their exams must have thought that the weather gods were having a good laugh at their expense.

Let’s hope the sun continues to shine so our hardworking students get the sum-mer they so deserve when the long slog is over later this month.

After a well-earned break, the focus will shift to what happens next. Many will be pinning their hopes on securing enough points for the college course of their

Deputy Eamon Gilmore was praised for his work on the same-sex referendum. He is pictured celebrating the result with Deputy John Lyons.

Twitter applauds Gilmore as he announces political exit

The veteran politician, who resigned as Labour leader last year, said in a statement he had informed Tánaiste Joan Burton that he would not be seeking a nomination as a candidate.

“It has been an honour to repre-sent the people of Dun Laoghaire for the past 30 years and I am also informing members of the Labour Party in my constituency of my decision,” he stated.

“I wish to thank the mem-bers of the Labour Party in Dun Laoghaire for their continued support and friendship, and the staff with whom I have worked for their loyalty and hard work.

“I also wish to acknowledge my parliamentary colleagues in the Labour Party, and from across the political spectrum, for their work

in the public interest.”In the statement Deputy Gil-

more also thanked his wife Carol and children Grainne, Oisin and Sean “for their love and comfort through all the challenges of my public life”.

“And I want to thank too our ex-tended family, and our personal friends who were always there for us,” he added. “I look forward to continuing to contribute to public life and the Labour Party.”

A TD since 1989, when he was elected as a deputy for the Work-ers’ Party, Deputy Gilmore served as a Democratic Left Minister of State in the Rainbow Coalition of 1994-1997.

He was elected Labour leader in 2007, leading it into coalition with Fine Gael in 2011, when he

also became Tánaiste and Minis-ter for Foreign Affairs.

He resigned as party leader af-ter Labour’s poor showing in last year’s local and European elec-tions.

However, he was praised in the wake of the same-sex marriage referendum for pushing the issue on this Government’s agenda.

On Twitter the news was greet-ed generally with regret that the TD had decided not to run. While there were some dissenting voic-es, the majority praised Gilmore for his political endeavours over the years.

“The goal of public service is to make the country a better place for its people,” Labour leader Joan Burton tweeted. “Eamon Gilmore achieved that by helping build the recovery.”

“Even though I was often his biggest critic, Eamon Gilmore was a very decent, well meaning leader,” tweeted Labour Party executive board member Chris

Bond. “I would like to wish him a happy retirement.”

The Parliamentary Correspond-ent for The Irish Times, Michael O’Regan, added: “Eamon Gilmore made a significant contribution to Irish politics, not least in putting the marriage equality referen-dum high on the agenda.”

“Really sad that @EamonGil-more won’t be standing for elec-tion again,” wrote another. “Has contributed massively to Irish public life.”

One tweet reads: “Eamon Gil-more not standing again in next GE. He will be huge loss to Irish politics. But I wish him well in his next adventure.”

Cllr Victor Boyhan (Ind) said in a statement: “Eamon worked tire-lessly for his constituents in Dún Laoghaire. His intentions were always honourable and good and I wish him and his family personal happiness and success in the fu-ture.

“He will be greatly missed.”

Sunday family cycleTHE annual Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Family Leisurely Cycle will take place on Sunday, June 14.Part of the activities organised by the council as part of National Bike Week, cyclists will be offered a choice of a 10km route from Blackrock to UCD or a shorter 4km version suitable for younger children.

The free cycle starts at 3pm from Blackrock Main Street and registration is at 2.30pm.

There will be a range of activities and entertainment staged before the cycle begins.

And there will be a goodie bag and refreshments for everyone at the finish line.

Speaking at the announcement of the festival line up, Ann O’Dea, CEO of Silicon Republic and driv-ing force behind Inspirefest, said: “The best networking and con-necting at conferences happens in relaxed, social settings – but that shouldn’t confine delegates to pubs and bars.

In addition to a stellar musi-cal line up, the fringe festival will feature film screenings includ-ing ‘Code: Debugging the Gender Gap’, which will see its Irish pre-miere at Inspirefest. Robin Haus-er Reynolds’ film examines how antiquated cultural attitudes,

damaging stereotypes, educa-tional obstacles and sexism are all reasons why girls and people of colour are less likely to seek careers in computer science than their white, male counterparts.

In addition, there will be direc-tor Q&As, spoken word and panel discussions featuring GLEN and Women For Election.

Meet the Southside’s three ‘supermum’ Dublin finalistsNeil Fetherstonhaugh

THREE Southside ‘supermums’ are among the Dublin finalists of the Woman’s Way & Lidl Mum of the Year competition.

Hundreds of nominations from across the country poured in and of the entries received from fami-lies in Dublin, the judging panel of well-known Irish personalities had the daunting task of whit-tling them down to just three.

Judges Norah Casey, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, Lisa Duffy, Nuala Carey, Edward Hayden and Emma Hannigan have now chosen 15 mums to attend the finals at a gala luncheon in the Interconti-nental, Dublin on July 6.

The first of the three Dublin finalists in the running for the Woman’s Way & Lidl Mum of the Year Award is Sharon Keating (48) of Dundrum.

Sharon’s humble reaction to

her teenage daughter Sophie’s nomination proves why she stood out.

“It’s easy being a mam when you’ve a child like her,” she stat-ed.

Sophie nominated her mum for taking on the role of both of her parents through her father’s depression while supporting her and her three siblings.

Sharon’s compassionate out-look highlights one of the rea-sons she made it to the final to be in the running for the title of Ireland’s No 1 mum.

“You have to sort of put your-self on the back burner when something like that hits,” she explained.

But remaining positive and putting her family first was al-ways Sharon’s primary concern despite suffering from panic at-tacks throughout the year and ill health due to spondylitis.

“The bones just grow into each other because there’s nothing to support them any longer,” she revealed. “I don’t dwell on it that much, I’m lucky.”

And it is clear how much her mum’s nomination means to Sophie: “There are millions of words in our world but not one of them can explain how much she means to me. As a teenage girl I can safely say Sharon is not only my ma, she is also my best friend.”

Next up is Patricia McCann (56) from Rialto.

Nominated by her daughter Dawn, the single mum of four has always put her family first,

and even returned to work in St James’s Hospital just six months after having a triple bypass.

This was mainly due to the fact that she was determined to fund her daughter’s dream scholar-ship.

She endlessly inspires her chil-dren that they are to follow their dreams no matter what happens in life.

Despite leaving school at 12, self-taught Patricia now writes plays specifically on issues that affect people which have been performed in community groups across Dublin and have led to her achieving recognition from the Ringsend Community Forum and the South West inner City Network

“The dream would be that I’ve

helped so many people and have helped save lives,” she declared.

And last, but not least, is Maud McGuckin (39) from Tallaght.

“Compassionate and caring, and professional with an entre-preneurial spirit”…these are the affectionate words of 17-year-old Panache McGuckin, son of 2015 finalist Maud, on why she deserves to be crowned Ireland’s No 1 mum.

Panache nominated his mum as her unconditional love, sup-port and protection for both him and his family has been endless while she tirelessly builds a life for them in Ireland.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Maud eventually moved her fam-ily over to Ireland while juggling a complete culture shock and

new lifestyle herself.“I had to work two jobs to also

be able to bring my sister with Panache,” she revealed. But she showed no signs of slowing down and proved that she wanted to make a difference for more than just her family. She set up House-cleaning.ie, a professional maid service which led to her being awarded Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 at the African Leader-ship and Excellence Awards.

She also won a Chambers Ire-land CSR Award for setting up Bellarose Foundation, offering discounted cleaning services for women who had cancer.

She was inspired to do so after receiving a call from a woman re-covering from cancer who could not afford the service.

ban.Describing the park as “a loved

and valuable amenity” for the past 40 years, Mary Coleman, who lives in Marley Grange, said local residents had tolerated two or three concerts a year, but that the jump to eight gigs last year was simply “too much”.

“DLR themselves say the types of events given permission to take place in parks and open spaces in-clude family fun days, sports days, charity walks and animal charity events and so on,” she said.

“This is hardly comparable to a rock concert with 40,000 people going on for several days and until all hours.”

Ms Coleman said that while some locals were calling for no more than three concerts to take place each year, many others would like to see an outright ban once this summer’s run is over.

Others would tolerate up to three concerts every second year and some have suggested that other parks in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown could be used on alter-nate years.

Residents from Rathfarnham, Ballinteer, Dundrum and Church-town have now joined with some of the Marley market traders un-der the umbrella name South Dub-lin Protect Our Parks (SDPOP).

Speaking on behalf of SDPOP, Brian Murphy, who lives in the nearby Hermitage housing estate, said the park was “like a war-zone for much of last summer”, with half of the grounds inaccessible to other visitors.

“The sheer scale of last year’s concerts was outrageous,” he said. “Construction work started on June 19 and continued into August. There were eight days of concerts, including the three-day Longitude Festival, and on each of these days we were subjected to sound checks from as early as 10am.”

Frances Murphy, a nurse who lives in Marley Grange, is con-

cerned about the impact of the gigs on vulnerable members of the local community.

“Many residents feel intimidat-ed by the large crowds and by the level of alcohol consumption and are afraid to leave their houses,” she said. “Many have bottles and cans thrown into their gardens and some have had to put up with people urinating and defecating in their gardens.”

SDPOP members are also concerned about the impact on the park’s natural habitat and eco-system, saying it was “outra-geous” that no environmental im-pact study had been carried out before and after the concerts.

“The park is home to foxes, squirrels, bats and many species of birds, which were nesting with young chicks during last summer’s concerts,” said Ms Coleman.

“According to the council’s parks bye-laws 2003, it is not per-mitted to ill-treat, worry or dis-turb any animal in the park.

“It seems clear to us that 40,000 concert-goers each day and night presents a huge distur-bance to the birds and animals that live in the park and this is quite unacceptable.”

In a statement, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council out-lined a series of measures that have been taken since last year to reduce the impact on locals.

These include a significant in-crease in security; extra fencing

and barriers to deter concert-go-ers from accessing estates; free parking for private buses and coaches; and a “robust commu-nications plan” between gardaí, professional security and stew-ards to ensure there is a rapid and effective response to incidents of anti-social behaviour outside the venue.

“A residents’ hotline will be set up,” the council stated. “The num-ber will be issued to all residents to report any issues that arise on concert days.

“Toilets will also be provided outside the event on the Grange Road at locations to be agreed.”

A comprehensive Traffic Man-agement Plan is also being devel-oped to ensure that concert-goers can access and exit the venue quickly and safely while still main-taining traffic flows for regular road users.

A dedicated off-site litter pick-ing team will be augmented by the council’s own resources while noise levels will be strictly moni-tored throughout the concert pe-riod, according to the council.

“The stage has also been moved to give as much access as possible to visitors to the park and in par-ticular to Marlay House, Boland’s Cafe and its environs,” the council added.

“The new location for the stage avoids moving it during Longitude which helps to reduce disrup-tion.”

Why Southside residents are opposing Marlay Park gigs

Despite a reduction in the number of events earmarked for Marlay Park this summer, locals are still angry and some want a total ban on all future gigs at the popular Southside amenity. Neil FetherStoNhaugh reports

pollution, traffic congestion, anti-social behaviour and disturbance to the park’s natural environ-ment.

While some of them want a further reduction in the number of concerts or for the burden to be shared with other Southside parks, many others want a total

FED-UP residents living in the vicinity of Marlay Park in Rath-farnham say they want a to-tal ban on gigs in the popular Southside amenity.

A series of summer concerts is about to get underway in the park, prompting a furious back-lash from locals.

For Marlay 2015, there will be five concerts in total – two ‘stand-alone’ gigs and the Longitude Festival, which runs over three days. The concerts will take place between July 3 and 19 with a com-bined capacity of 135,000 people.

This is a reduction in the num-ber of events staged for Marlay 2014 when there were eight con-cert days, including the Longitude Festival, which boasted a total ca-pacity of 210,000 people.

However, despite the reduction

in the scale of the series of con-certs, and after several meetings between residents and members of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Coun-ty Council since last year, there remains strong local opposition to the concerts.

Remembering the roots of the Irish Socialist Republican Party

LONG before his association with the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU) or the Irish Citizen Army, James Connolly established an important, yet relatively forgotten political party in Ireland.

That party was known as the Irish Socialist Republican Party (ISRP) and was founded in May 1896 at a public meeting in Pierce Ryan’s public house at 50 Thomas Street in Dublin.

The ISRP has the honour of being the first avowedly republican political party in modern Ireland and the demand for an independent Irish Republic was a central piece of the new party’s platform.

This was a radical move on Connolly’s behalf, coming at a time when the majority of Irish nationalists supported the Home Rule Movement and a long time before the idea of a Republic was popular on a mass scale. The ISRP was also the first party in Irish history to promote the idea of ‘socialist republicanism’, a political ideology which views the national and social struggles in Ireland as the one fight. Socialist republicanism is probably best summed up by Connolly’s famous maxim: “The cause of Labour is the cause of Ireland; the cause of Ireland is the cause of Labour. They cannot be dissevered”.

With Connolly at the helm,

as a full-time paid organiser, a headquarters was opened at 67 Middle Abbey Street and the party soon began its political activism.

It organised regular public meetings across Dublin at venues including the Custom House, the fountain in James’s Street, Forster Place and the Phoenix Park.

In September 1896 the party issued its first political manifesto. Written by Connolly, the manifesto declared that the objective of the ISRP was the “establishment of an Irish Socialist Republic”.

The party’s political programme called for a 48-hour working week and the establishment of a minimum wage along with the nationalisation of railways and canals, the abolition of private banks, the free maintenance of children, free education up to university and universal suffrage.

The ISRP also launched a weekly socialist newspaper, The Worker Republic, with Connolly as editor.

The paper was based at Connolly’s home, 54 Pimlico in the rebel Liberties and was used to spread the party’s message across the country. Attempts were soon made to establish branches in a number of towns and cities including Cork, Belfast, Limerick and Naas, as well as in Northern England, but the party remained strongest in Dublin.

Despite these early successes, it is believed that membership of the ISRP never exceeded 100 people and the party remained peripheral.

Its members were constantly harassed by the Catholic Church and the Irish Parliamentary Party who were hostile to the idea of socialist republicanism.

By 1903, financial difficulties and internal disagreements led to a split in the party which James Connolly▪

Daithí Ó Riain

reduced its small membership even further.

This made it even more difficult for the ISRP to come up with the wages owed to James Connolly and his family slipped further into poverty.

Left with no other option to provide for his family, he was forced to leave Ireland.

Connolly emigrated to America and later compared the demise of the ISRP to the “loss of a child”.

Historians agree that Connolly’s ISRP was ahead of its time.

The party had a major influence on later Irish politics and our struggle for freedom.

With Connolly’s return to Ireland in 1910, socialist republicanism began to grow again and the radical politics of the ISRP found pride of place as the centre platform of the 1916 Proclamation and the democratic programme of the first Dáil.

on Belgard Road and approached Sarah Brennan, who had just be-gun her shift at the front desk. He showed her a knife and asked for the money. As he left he told her not to tell anyone or he would come back and harm her.

He was apprehended by gardaí nearby. A scalpel was found at the scene. He admitted his involve-ment and apologised for his be-haviour. He said he was living in a derelict house across the road from the hotel and wanted to get money for a deposit. A victim im-pact statement from Ms Brennan was handed to the court. Detec-tive Garda McGrath agreed with counsel that she had been very shaken by the incident and was now doing self defence courses.

Ciaran Kelly BL, defending, said that Byrne had been accepted on a post release program run by Fo-cus Ireland and had received good reports from the prison governor and education officer.

Peter Byrne (44), with a former address at Main Street, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery at the School Supply Cen-tre, Village Green, Tallaght and Abberley Hotel, Belgard Road, Tallaght on November 29 and 30, 2014.

Byrne told Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that he was ready to change af-ter spending 26 years of his life in jail.

“I’m getting older and I haven’t seen much of outside, and the bit I did see I was drunk,” he said.

Judge Nolan said he believed Byrne’s desire to reform was sin-cere, but added, “I’m not sure if he has the fortitude to comply with that”. Noting his 91 previous convictions, including four previ-

ous robberies, burglary, theft and assault, Judge Nolan imposed a four year jail term and suspended the final 18 months.

The first of the two robberies occurred on the evening of No-vember 29 in the School Supply Centre. An employee was pre-paring Christmas lights when he heard someone enter the shop.

Detective Garda Ciaran Mc-Grath told Martina Baxter BL, prosecuting, that Byrne told the employee “this is a bit of a rob-bery” and that he had a knife. The employee opened the cash regis-ter for Byrne and he removed all the money, placed it in a plastic bag and left. He apologised on his way out.

The following day at 11.30am, Byrne entered the Abberley Hotel

Summer carnival to give hope to Kolkata’s kids

forced to exist on the streets and in the slums of Kolkata (Calcut-ta). The Hope Foundation (HOPE) was established in Ireland by Irish humanitarian Maureen Forrest in 1999 to help these children.

Sixteen years on HOPE now provides support to over 60 proj-ects including education, prima-ry healthcare, child protection, children’s shelters, vocational training and drugs rehabilita-tion.

With offices in Cork, Dublin, UK, Germany and India, HOPE also works with 14 local Indian NGOs to rescue thousands of children from the streets and slums of Kolkata.

There will also be a selec-tion of ‘pre-loved’ clothes stalls, homemade cakes and treats and hidden gems in the bric-a-brac section.

Entry to the HOPE Carnival is free and all proceeds from the afternoon go to the Hope Foun-dation’s (HOPE) work with street and slum children in Kolkata.

Speaking about the carnival, HOPE patron, Christopher, stat-ed: ‘‘It’s my pleasure to launch the HOPE Carnival for the Hope

POWER FIGHTS BACK!

Senator Averil Power pictured with her trainer, Christy Dunne from Baldoyle Boxing Club, during a charity fight in 2013. PHOTO BY CONOR McCABE PHOTOGRAPHY

Instead of dealing with the serious issues I raised about the party’s lack of vision, policies and leadership, Micheál Martin and others have tried to portray my resignation as a constituency squab-ble by making the baseless claim that I left because I was afraid I wouldn’t be selected as a Fianna Fáil candidate for the next election.

This is absolutely not the case. Even constituency rivals Sean Haughey and Deirdre Heney have stated on radio that they understood I would be a can-didate.

I also believe I had a strong chance of winning a Dáil seat for the party.

As a new candidate in 2011 - Fianna Fáil’s worst ever election - I secured almost 4,800 first preference votes. In a three-seat constituency, I came fourth on the first count by less than 250 votes.

I have worked extremely hard since then, both locally and nationally. Fian-na Fáil know this and were briefing the media prior to my departure that they expected me to win a seat next time. Their claims to the contrary over the past few weeks lack any credibility.

The reason I left is simple: I have lost all faith in Fianna Fáil and don’t believe it is fit for Government.

It lacks credible policies on many of the most important issues of concern to Dubliners. From the A&E crisis in Beaumont Hospital to unemployment, Fianna Fáil is quick to criticise, but slow to propose real solutions.

This was a problem two years ago. But as we approach a general election and the selection of the next Govern-ment, it is a fatal flaw.

Fianna Fáil is also afraid to take clear positions in debates for fear of losing

support. Instead of showing leadership, most of the party’s representatives prefer to sit on the fence and see which way the wind blows.

Fianna Fáil’s approach to the mar-riage equality referendum was just one example of this. Marriage equal-ity wasn’t just a personal goal of mine - it was official party policy. Fianna Fáil members voted for it at their 2012 Ard Fheis. TDs and senators are bound by the policy decisions of the Ard Fheis and so all had a responsibility to cam-paign for it.

Despite this, most refused to do so. The message this approach sent to voters was that while the party was officially in favour of the referendum, some Fianna Fáil representatives were not. In a blatant act of cute-hoorism of the worst kind, the party was both for and against the referendum at the same time.

Fianna Fáil’s approach to the refer-endum symbolised everything that is

wrong with the party. It also confirmed for me that despite the party lead-er’s talk of ‘new politics’, nothing has changed. Fianna Fáil’s only goal is to win seats and it is prepared to do, and say, whatever is needed to achieve that goal. My decision to walk away was not a rash or hasty one. I have been un-happy for some time, as Micheál Martin was all too aware. However, I wanted to believe I could help change the party from within. I also knew many mem-bers were relying on me to do so and I didn’t want to let them down.

Ultimately, though, the party’s cyni-cal approach to the marriage equality referendum showed me that nothing has changed. It also convinced me that my fight for change was a futile one.

Having lost all faith in Fianna Fáil, I simply couldn’t in good conscience knock on doors and ask the people of Dublin Bay North to support them in the next election.

I haven’t made any decision yet as

to whether I will contest the general election as an Independent candidate. I need to figure out first if that would be the best way for me to continue to make a difference.

I have never been involved in politics for the sake of it. I ran for election in 2011 because I wanted to help deliver positive change. I have tried very hard to do so and am proud of initiatives such as my adoption bill and work in the area of mental health.

For now, my priority is to use my role as an Independent senator to continue to make a positive difference to peo-ple’s lives. I am extremely grateful for all the messages of support I have re-ceived since my resignation. Hundreds of local people have taken the time to thank me for my work and wish me all the best in the future.

At a time when I am being subjected to a nasty and unfair attack by former party colleagues, that support means a lot.

FIANNA Fáil’s nasty and disingenuous reaction to my resignation has con-firmed for me that I made the right decision in leaving the party.

I was right to quit ‘nasty’ Fianna Fáil. By Averil Power

‘Top Hat’ was the winner of three Olivier Awards, for ‘Best

New Musical’, ‘Best Choreog-raphy’, ‘Best Costume Design’ and made is world premiere in

the West End in 2012 where it played over 600 performances during its two-year run.

The show is based on the mo-tion picture that was nominated for four Academy Awards, and was the most successful picture of the nine movies Astaire and Rogers made together.

It premiered at the Radio City Music Hall in 1935 where it broke all box office records. Within a few weeks, all five songs from the film occupied the top five places on the Amer-ican Hit Parade. It is still widely regarded as one of the greatest dance musicals of all time.

tion date on known and verifiable sale prices of comparable prop-erties in the area.

UK citizens and moving to live in ireland

QUESTIONI am a UK citizen and I am

thinking of moving to Ireland. Are there any restrictions on tak-ing up residence?

ANSWER Citizens of the United King-

dom are entitled to live in Ireland without any conditions or restric-tions. Unlike the citizens of other

countries, they are not subject to the Aliens Act 1935 or to any or-ders made under it.

This means that you, as a UK citizen, do not need a visa, any form of residence permit or em-ployment permit to live in Ire-land.

In general, while living in Ire-land, UK citizens are entitled to avail of public services on the same basis as Irish citizens living in Ireland.

For example, UK citizens who are resident in Ireland are en-titled to health services in the same way as Irish citizens who are resident.

UK citizens resident in Ire-land whose income is from a UK source and who do not have any income from Ireland may be enti-tled to a medical card regardless of their means.

Unlike other EU citizens, UK citizens may retire to Ireland without having to establish that they have sufficient resources or that they have private health

insurance. UK citizens living in Ireland are

eligible for social welfare pay-ments in the same way as Irish citizens living in Ireland.

However, you need to meet the requirements of the habitual resi-dence condition (in the same way as Irish citizens living in Ireland) to qualify for many means-tested social welfare payments.

If you have recently moved to Ireland, you may find it more dif-ficult to establish that your main centre of interest is here.

UK citizens living in Ireland are entitled to vote in Irish elections, with the exception of Presidential elections and referendums.

Northside Citizens’ Informa-tion Service, which provides a free and confidential service to the public, compiles the Know Your Rights column. The centre is based at Bunratty Road, Coolock. Phone 0761 07 8190. Information is also available online at citi-zensinformation.ie and the Na-tional Helpline on 0761 07 4000.

ANSWERIn general, if you declared a

valuation band or valuation on your 2013 return honestly, and in line with Revenue guidelines, this valuation will continue to apply until October 31, 2016.

When you are selling your house you (or your solicitor) can use the LPT online system to get clearance from Revenue to prove that there are no outstanding LPT issues with your property. This is known as General Clearance.

However, if the expected or agreed sales price is greater than the valuation band or valuation declared on the 2013 return, you may need to get written clear-ance from Revenue, as well as General Clearance.

If you meet any of the follow-ing conditions you don’t need to get written clearance:

1. The sales price falls within the allowable valuation margin: in general, for houses that were valued up to €300,000, the sales price can fall into the next valua-tion band; for houses valued be-tween €300,000 and €1 million, the sale price can be up to 15 per cent higher than the upper limit of the band declared; and for houses over €1 million the sale price can be up to 15 per cent higher than the declared charge-able value.

2. You carried out work that enhanced the value of the prop-erty. You must have receipts and verification of how much was spent.

3. You based the original valu-ation on sales of comparable properties. You must be able to show that you based the declared chargeable value on the valua-

When to have a hearing testIF YOU feel your hearing is beginning to let you down it’s important to get it test-ed. Because like any other healthcare issue, the earlier that you get a hearing test, the better your overall out-come will be.

Professional audiologist, Gabriel Phelan, says early intervention with suitable hearing instruments can re-store normal hearing, whereas if hearing loss is left untreated the brain simply forgets how to hear, which can lead to other difficulties including social isolation and depression.

SYMPTOMS OF HEARINgLOSS INcLUDE:• You have to turn the volume up on the TV or radio.• People seem to be mumbling.• You have difficulty following a conversation if you’re in a group.

•You have difficulty hearing in church or in noisy places.• You have problems hearing clearly on the phone.• Family or friends mention that they have to repeat themselves.

If you suffer from any of the above, you should have a hearing test. Gabriel provides weekly hearing clinics with free hearing tests at Dr Liam Pow-er’s GP surgeries at the Village Medical, Main Street, Castle-knock and at 26 Fassaugh Avenue, Cabra. For information and appointments phone or text Gabriel on 087-2646111.

Dogs Trust is based in Finglas, just off Exit 5 on the M50. Map and directions can be found on their website at www.dogstrust.ie. You can also pop up for a visit. Dogs Trust is open six days a week from 12-4pm. The centre is closed all day Tuesday. You can also find Dogs Trust on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dogstrustireland or Twitter @DogsTrust_IE.

Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for over 200 lost and abandoned dogs.

This week’s star dog is Beau, a five-year-old male Staffie. Beau is a boy with a big heart - and he has a super long tongue which is just great for giving big sloppy kisses to his favourite friends.

Beau is a worried boy as he’s been in kennels for quite a while now so his Dogs Trust carers would love to find him a patient, kind home with a family who’ll come visit him several times here at the centre to build up a trusting relationship.

If you think you could offer Beau a loving home call Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

Tips on dog groomingDoGs TrusT Canine Column

at least twice a year. Some breeds will definitely

need more regular appoint-ments, but this can be dis-cussed with your own groomer. Groomers should use positive reinforcement when it comes to handling dogs and they should always be welfare minded.

A full groom includes a brush out, ear clean, nail clip, wash, condition and facial scrub. After that your dog is hand dried, clipped and styled as requested.

The grooming professional will also be able to give your dog a visual health check. This is not a substitute for a veteri-nary check but if there is any-thing that might be of concern, they can recommend that you take your dog to the vet.

If your dog is particularly nervous or even aggressive when it comes to grooming, make sure to take them for a vet check to rule out any un-derlying conditions.

Happy grooming!

If you follow these tips, you can make the grooming experi-ence a positive one for you and your pet.

As well as keeping your dog’s hair clean and manageable, there are many health benefits to keeping your dog in tip-top shape. Here are a few questions often asked about grooming.

Why is grooming so impor-tant for skin?

Skin must be cleaned regu-larly, which can be done by regularly brushing and bathing the skin and coat. It’s important not to wash a pet too regularly, though, as this can cause an imbalance of the natural oils in their skin. Between washes the coat should be brushed regularly with the correct equipment. This will massage the skin, increasing blood flow and will remove dead hair.

Why is grooming so impor-tant for nails?

Overgrown nails will curl and grow into the skin, nail bed or toe causing pain, discomfort and possibly leading to infec-tion. Regular walks on pavement can help wear down your dog’s nails.

Why grooming is so impor-tant for hair?

A build up of dead hair can im-pede the animal’s natural ability to regulate body temperature and can contribute to matting or ingrown hairs, which will cause your dog pain and discomfort.

When it comes to grooming, you can do little bits at home yourself using equipment pur-chased in a reputable pet shop. You should make sure to speak to your vet, a groomer or the staff in the shop to make sure that what you’re buying is suit-able for the type of coat your dog has.

It’s definitely worth invest-ing in taking your dog for a full treatment at a grooming salon

Difficulty Walking Your Dog?Difficulty walking a dog can stem from not just the one end of the lead but both. Going right back to the beginning and establishing the humans role as pack leader is something which should be done. Food is a good way to demonstrate place in the pack. If meals in your house are eaten as a family prepare your dogs food, place it out of reach but where they can see it and leave it there until your family has finished their meal. In doing this the dog begins to assume their place at the bottom of the pecking order and training is made easier. When walking through doors ensure that the dog walks through after the people of the house. Command the dog to sit and wait before you walk through, once you are through call them through and praise them. When walking the dog keep them on a short lead until they are well trained. A retractable lead lets them go ahead making them think they are higher up the pecking order of the pack.Using a high value reward (high value is a treat which your dog really enjoys) dogs can be rewarded for good behaviour throughout the walk. The treat can also be used to divert the dog’s attention in anticipation of a situation occurring (not once the situation is happening as the dog will then think that they are being rewarded for bad behaviour).

BOOK OF THE WEEK: ‘A Question of Betrayal’ by Zoë MillerON A windswept beach in County Cork a woman rescues a young man from the sea. Luis Meyer’s life has fallen apart and he’s determined to end it all until an angel of mercy pulls him from the water.

She gives Luis the encourage-ment and inspiration to appreciate the life he has and to make the most of his gifted musical talent when he goes back home to Switzerland.

More than 30 years later, Carrie Cassidy is still reeling from the deaths of her adored parents, John and Sylvie, in a tragic plane crash. She’s flitting from one job to another, un-able to move forward or forget the past.

Drifting on the surface of life and afraid to take a risk, she can’t even commit to Mark, the love of her life, and has called off the en-gagement. Then everything changes when Carrie has an unexpected visit from a woman she has never met before; Maria Meyer.

Maria is Luis’ wife. A successful concert pianist, Luis is dying of cancer and one of his final wishes is to meet Carrie and talk to her about her mother Sylvie, who saved his life all those years ago. He also has something he wishes to say privately to Carrie.

Maria invites Carrie to visit them in Switzerland, but Carrie refuses, unwilling to believe that

her mother would have betrayed her father, even though a lot of what Maria says suggests that

Sylvie had indeed a rela-

tion-

ship with Luis. But after a fraught and unex-pected visit from Mark and the unhappy realisation that her life was going nowhere, Carrie goes to Switzerland to hear what Luis has to say.

Carrie spends time with Luis in his villa on the beautiful Lake Lucerne. Even though he is ill, he brings Carrie out onto the

lake and up into the mountains, wanting to put some sparkle back into her life, the way Sylvie did with his. But

what he tells her about her mother is a mystery to Carrie. She returns home determined to get her life back on track; she will find

out the truth about what happened between Luis and her mother and heal the rift with Mark.

Carrie begins to piece together painful and danger-

ous truths about her mother’s past, returning to her child-hood home and going down to Cork. She is unaware that Adam Gilmore, a Dublin based

financier, is watching her every move, fearful of old ghosts coming back to haunt him and ruining his carefully laid plans.

When Carrie meets Adam, something threatening about the man puts her on edge and she realises he is keeping dark secrets of his own; secrets she can’t unravel without Mark’s help.

But making peace with Mark seems to be an impossible task, thanks to the way Carrie has bruised his heart.

Trading places leads to hilarious Dublin rompDR JOSEPH Carlton is a respected member of the community. Al-though valued and highly thought of by friends and work colleagues, he’s nonetheless somewhat bored and discontented with life.

Then there is a chance encounter one summer’s morning with Mattie Morcam, a bus driver, devoid of any principles and with the morals of an alligator. Nonethe-less he is a paid up union member, proud proletariat and working class to the core.

The two men hatch an audacious plan to switch respective professions for the summer months.

Draped in a white coat, Mattie is sub-sequently unleashed on the unsuspect-ing patients of St Bernadette’s for what turns out to be an interesting and hilari-ous romp through the hallowed halls of a major Dublin hospital.

Chaos ensues as Mattie practices his unique medical methods on his bemused patients and puts into practice some un-usual interventions.

Meanwhile, across in the Donnybrook

depot, Dr Carlton is expe-riencing some difficulties coming to terms with the working practices em-ployed by Dublin bus drivers.

Negotiating rush hour traffic, however, is when the real fun commences.

The novel is rep-resentative of the street genre (as championed by Roddy Doyle) which was in vogue some years ago.

ireland paves way for uSastudentsMINISTER for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan has an-nounced more than 500 schol-arships for American students looking to study in higher edu-cation institutions in Ireland.

The enhanced levels of sup-ports are designed to facilitate the US Government’s plans to double the number of American students studying abroad over the next five years. Minister O’Sullivan recently led an Irish education mission to NAFSA, the largest education conference in the world, which took place in Boston this year.

Fifteen higher education in-stitutions from Ireland also took part in the NAFSA conference, which ran from May 24-29.

“The Irish Government is fully committed to the internation-alisation of education and the very positive economic and cul-tural benefits this can unlock,” said Minister O’Sullivan. “The students of today can all benefit from an international dimension to their education and this will stay with them for a lifetime.

The more we can do to help facilitate this through our world-class education system, attracting international students to study in Ireland and form a lifelong bond with our country, the better.”

Giles O’Neill, head of Education in Ireland, added: “I’ve rarely seen such a well coordinated plan around a vision; our education in-stitutions providing every reason for American students to come and study in Ireland; the institu-tional links; the common ground; the investment in student experi-ence; and the positive impact it has on US and Irish relationships that already go very deep.”

Currently less than 10 per cent of American students study abroad and the US Government endorsed Generation Study Abroad initiative aims to in-crease this number dramatically to 600,000 by 2019.

Honda aims to set a fuel world record

on June 25. But we’ve got more than 170 hours behind the wheel to contend with first.”

The official Guinness World Record title is ‘Lowest Fuel Con-sumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries’, measured in litres per 100km and miles per gallon, cal-culated over the entire journey. If successful, the new record will apply to all cars, including hybrid and electric models.

Based on strict and rigorous guidelines, the record attempt re-quires the car to enter each of the 24 countries specified, collecting a range of evidence including a fuel/mileage logbook, GPS read-ings, video, photographs and in-dependent witness signatures to prove that it has done so.

To ensure accurate monitoring of the route, journey time and distance driven, the record car has been fitted with a tracking device, provided by fleet telemat-ics and stolen vehicle recovery expert, Tracker.

The unit will provide a supe-rior level of journey information

On Monday, June 1, two mem-bers of Honda’s European Re-search & Development (R&D) team climbed into a Honda Civic Tourer and set out on an epic journey from Aalst, Belgium. Heading towards the Nether-lands and Germany, their trip will see them navigate the continent in a clockwise direction, with the aim of returning to their starting point some 25 days later, on June 25, having covered a planned to-tal of 13,614km.

The Guinness World Record ti-tle attempt comes on the back of several independent tests which have proven Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine to consistently out-per-form its quoted fuel efficiency in real-world driving conditions. Keen to once again underline this performance and in the challenging spirit for which the brand is famed, Honda aims to set a benchmark with a Guinness

World Record title never before attempted in Europe.

Under the rules, the same two drivers must be in the car for eve-ry kilometre of the journey. Step forward Honda R&D colleagues of some 18 years, Irishman Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, both based at Honda’s European man-ufacturing facility in Swindon.

The pair volunteered to take up the challenge and will be charged with driving an average 592km, taking around 7.5 hours each day.

Fergal said: “We are very much looking forward to the record at-tempt, and while we’re excited we’re both a little nervous about the scale of the task that awaits us.

“A huge amount of planning has gone into taking on this chal-lenge and we look forward to what we hope will be a successful result when we return to Brussels

HONDA will put the real-world fuel economy of its super-efficient 1.6 i-DTEC engine to the ultimate test in a 13,000km drive across all 24 contiguous EU countries.

Honda targets new Guinness World Record title for fuel efficiency with a 13,000km drive across Europe.▪

in real-time to ensure that Hon-da can supply robust and reli-able automated data-evidence to meet the requirements stipulated by Guinness World Record.

Supporters will even be able to follow the progression of the two drivers live by visiting http://www.tracker.co.uk/RealFuelChal-lenge.

The car that attempts the record must be a standard model in every respect, with no modifi-

cations to give an advantage. This will be judged by an independent witness at the beginning and end of the record attempt.

The car can only travel by road, therefore the route does not ex-tend to the UK, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta, which make up the re-mainder of the 28 EU countries. In order to ensure no unfair ad-vantage by reducing weight, the tank of the car must be filled to the maximum at each fuel stop.

Adrian Cole, managing direc-tor, Universal Honda Ltd, said: “Since its launch in 2013 we have seen our 1.6 i-DTEC engine consistently win awards for real-world fuel efficiency in Civic, Civic Tourer and CR-V models, and this is our opportunity to put it to the ultimate test on a huge scale. We are very confident of a great re-sult and we wish the team all the very best of luck as they take on the challenge.”

Peugeot’s game-changer PEUGEOT has unwrapped details of its virtual Vision Gran Turismo racer, unveiled for the GT6 video game.

With a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio of 875kg and 875bhp and the ability to go from 0 to 100kph in just 1.73 seconds, Peugeot’s new supercar promises a unique driving experience for Gran Turismo 6 gamers, exclusively on Play-Station3.

Peugeot designers teamed up with Peugeot Sport engineers to craft an outstanding supercar that has all the hallmarks of a high-performance en-durance racer, brought to life in glori-ous high definition in GT6.

With more than 15 cars already featured in the Vision Gran Turismo line-up, the lion brand has risen to the latest challenge put out by Kazunori Yamauchi, the man behind the flagship driving game who asked automakers to design a car specifically to commemo-rate the game’s 15th anniversary.

At first glance, the Peugeot Vision Gran Turismo reveals a striking mono-lithic silhouette, sculpted to sweep

aside air resistance and standing just 104 cm tall, with the notable absence of nearly any aerodynamic features. The body design alone is enough to ef-fectively stick the car to the road.

The central V6 turbo 3.2L engine, just behind the driver, feeds its 875bhp to the ground via six-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system comprising 22-inch alloys in the front and 23-inch counterparts in the back. This, coupled with the light-weight design, tipping the scales at just 875 kg, and super-responsive steering, makes it the ideal steed to take up the Gran Turismo challenge. The car’s phe-nomenal acceleration, taking it from 0 to 100kph in 1.73 seconds, is thanks to a power-to-weight ratio promising one horsepower for every kilo of kerb weight. Deceleration is equally impres-sive, with four ventilated BREMBO car-bon discs (380 mm in the front and 337 mm in the rear).

Virtual drivers will have the chance to take the Peugeot Vision Gran Turis-mo for a spin in the very near future on no fewer than 40 outstanding tracks with 107 layouts.

Lots to like about Citroen cars

the 17-inch Miami alloys will cost you an extra €450. I could man-age without the fancy alloys, but for peace of mind it’s worth that little extra for the spare wheel.

On the road this is a decent car to travel in. Road and wind noise have been reduced thanks to ad-

It was really nice, but truth be told many people in Ireland still have worries about residual val-ues for Citroens. To be fair, the French manufacturer has worked hard in recent years to try and make their cars more attractive to larger groups of people, but it looks like the company is still suf-fering from those perceptions of the past.

Citroen’s funky-looking Cac-tus has been selling well in Ire-land this year and the company recently made a big fuss when launching their 1.2-litre pure tech petrol version of the revamped C4. However, the version I tested was diesel, which also had a very frugal engine.

At first glance the C4 would re-mind you of the Peugeot 308 and that’s only natural as they both come from the same PSA stable

in France. This revamped version features new headlights, all the latest kit, a range of new engines and an updated interior.

It’s a very comfortable hatch-back and the seats are the most comfortable I have sat in this year. The grey-coloured mate-rial on the seats looks really class - it reminded me of a colour you would see in a man’s suit; really attractive. In case you might be thinking this car is only for males, the test model was loved by all the females in our house.

Inside there is plenty of head and leg room for five adults. The dash is well laid out and the ra-dio controls are easy to use with plenty of stations stored.

There is a huge boot and un-derneath is a ‘mini’ spare wheel, which is always appreciated. However, that spare wheel and

ditional soundproof-ing around the car. Overall, very comfortable to drive and you cer-tainly won’t need many pit stops if you drive the diesel version.

We can all learn from one an-other and a colleague pointed out a nice little extra in the C4,

which is also available in some other type of cars when opening and locking. If you hold down the unlocking button on the fob all four windows rolls down simulta-neously; likewise they will close together if you do the same when

locking the car.Now you may well say what use

is that? But on a warm summer’s day if you return to your car the interior may be very hot, but you can quickly reduce the heat by

opening all four windows in a few seconds.

Also, when you lock the car the side mirrors also fold in, which is useful if parking in a tight spot.

Prices start at €19,995 for the new 1.2-litre

PureTech petrol, while the Blue HDi100 Flair ver-sion I drove will cost you

€23,395. A lovely car, but it’s com-

peting in a very tough section with the likes of the Ford Focus

and there is that long-term worry about residuals.

However, as my motoring friend pointed out, as a nation we have moved on in many ways; maybe it’s time we also moved on regarding cars and gave Citroen credit for the effort they have put into designing their cars.

enjoy a post-wedding cruiseTo keep that rush of adrenaline and

sheer happiness going, a holiday of a lifetime is the perfect way to start mar-ried life and wedded bliss.

A cruise is a great way to hit many destinations in one trip, without wast-ing time in transit, or worse, at the baggage check. Plus, you only have to unpack once!

Cruise tickets are normally all inclu-sive to include accommodation, excel-lent cuisine, exciting entertainment and a huge range of activities.

There are more than a dozen major cruise lines with over 100 ships at sea with sailing itineraries from the Carib-bean and Mediterranean, or broaden your horizons even further to destina-tions such as Dubai, Hong Kong, Shang-hai, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and the Far East.

Ships range in size from 100 passen-gers to more than 5,000 so there are a lot of considerations when planning the best honeymoon cruise for you.

Here are a few tips from the cruise experts at The e-travel.

• CHOOSE tHE RIgHt SHIPThe ship and type of cruise matter

just as much as the destination and you should decide whether you’d like a smaller ship, which might mean fewer amenities, or a large ship with lots of options.

Whatever you decide you’d like, re-searching ahead of time will mean no surprises. E-travel offer a wide variety of cruise packages on Cunard, Princess & P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean Inter-national, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, MSC Cruises, Silversea Cruiseline, NCL, Carnival, Holland America and Hurtigruten.

• CHOOSE tHE RIgHt DEStINAtION.Irish Honeymooners mostly choose

to cruise either in the Mediterranean

or Caribbean with Eastern or Western routes. Caribbean Cruises generally de-part from Miami and Fort Lauderdale and most of the Mediterranean cruises go from either Barcelona or Rome. But the actual cruise port can be quite a distance from the airport in most cases so if you’re not a seasoned traveller it is advisable to book a fly cruise pack-age which includes transfers to and from the ship.

E-travel have some of the very best fly cruise packages available at the mo-ment, including a nine night Western Caribbean Cruise from €1,029 per per-son sharing or Mediterranean cruises available from €699.

For those looking for something different, check out a Panama Canal cruise, California and Pacific coastal cruise, Australia and Tasmania cruise, South America and the amazing Euro-pean and Russia river cruises.

• CRUISE AND StAy.This option offers couples the best

of both worlds with some of the honey-moon on land and some at sea. This is very popular amongst Irish newlyweds looking for a trip of a lifetime.

E-travel can organise cruise and stay packages all over the world. Orlando with Eastern Caribbean cruises is avail-able from €1,249 per person which includes seven nights in Florida and seven nights on the Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas cruising around the Eastern Caribbean. This includes return flights to Orlando.

Cruise and stay honeymoons can be tailor made to include so many differ-ent destinations, itineraries and ships. The world is literally your oyster!

• DON’t BE SHyIf your cabin steward, dining staff

and even the captain know that you’re on your honeymoon cruise, you’re

likely to see little touches added for romance. Additionally, staff can help you cater your cruise so that it’s as ro-mantic as you’d like it to be.

• PUt It ON tHE LIStMany couples now add travel vouch-

ers to their wedding lists. What gift could be more perfect than contribut-ing to a trip of a lifetime for a newly-wed couple?

E-travel offers a wedding list service so that dream honeymoon can become a reality.

Five tips for improved window privacyImprove your home with our series of DIY top tipsJulia Gray

YOUR home is a sanctuary from the outside world, so you cer-tainly don’t want the outside

which are similar but look more elegant and up-to-date, have become more popular than Vene-tians in recent years.

5. Plantation shutters are fitted to the window and this means they block out more light than blinds when the slats are closed (provid-ing the shutters cover the whole window).

However, they let in less light when the slats are open because they have frames around them. These shutters come in panels, so you can fold them back out of the way, and are made of wood or faux wood in different designs. Although not cheap, plantation shut-ters will enhance the room.

world looking in.

But how do you get the balance between privacy, letting the light in and allowing the family to see

what’s going on in the neighbour-hood.

1. If you want something less fussy than net curtains - and these days most of us do - how about frosted window film? This film is sticky on one side and gives a smart, contemporary fin-ish both inside and out.

The effect is the same in day-light and at night when the light’s on in the room, giving you total privacy.

The only real disadvantage is that you can’t see through the film, so while people outside can’t see in, you can’t look out either.

2. Frosted film works well on sash windows when confined to the lower window, but if you don’t have sashes, you can just frost the lower part of the glass, leav-ing some unobscured.

Another option is having a design, such as rows of cut-out circles or squares, incorporated

into the film, which makes it more interesting and allows you to see out (and people outside to see in) just a little.

However, patterned film is more expensive and harder to fit.

3. Blinds are another popular and obvious solution to privacy problems. Although quite costly, bottom-up blinds are the best ones to use.

These are roller blinds that go up from the window sill, rather than down from the top of the window, so you can cover as much of the glass as you want.

Go for a sheer fabric and you’ll be able to see out, but not the other way round (unless the light’s on).

4. Some people like Venetian blinds because they give privacy during the day (providing the slats are angled the right way) and at night (if the slats are closed).

That said, plantation shutters,

Grow it Yourself: tips for the gardenBy Michael Kelly of Grow it Yourself (GIY) Ireland

THE winners of this year’s in-nocent and GIY Sow & Grow schools campaign (Miss Quinn’s 2nd Class from Our Lady of Good Counsel BNS Drimnagh) came to Bloom to get their prize and celebrate their win with us.

Given that they saw off compe-tition from over 20,000 children in 650 schools nationwide to be-come 2015 Sow & Grow champi-ons, they deserved and received the full VIP treatment at Bloom – the highlight of which was getting to meet Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins (“Hiya Michael D”, I overheard one of them say to him).

Thursday morning is always my favourite part of Bloom, precisely

because we get to meet the Sow & Grow kids and get immersed in their enthusiasm for all things GIY.

This year’s final seemed par-ticularly special for two reasons. First of all, the winning school was from Dublin which knocks on the head the notion that school food-growing is for rural areas only.

Secondly, as Dad to an eight-year-old who is obsessed with Match Attax and borrowing my iPad, I think it’s magic that the winning class in a nationwide school food-growing competition was from an all-boys’ school.

In his book ‘Surprised by Joy’, CS Lewis writes that the modern boy ‘travels a hundred miles with less sense of liberation and pil-grimage and adventure than his grandfather got from traveling ten;. It’s a quote that often pops into my head when dealing with

our own ‘modern boy’ at home – it does seem that the sense of awe and wonder in the ‘modern boy’ is under threat at an earlier age than it used to be.

How wonderful then to see a class of boys getting back to ba-sics with such gusto – sticking their hands in the soil, growing their cress, squash and pumpkin seeds, and marvelling at the won-ders of nature.

They even composed their own song about growing - a GIY ver-sion of Lou Bega’s Mambo No.5 (‘a little bit of pumpkin in my life…’). It was the highlight of Bloom!
