LOCAL politicians have called on the board of managementof Tallaght Hospital to reverse a decision to close the hos-pital’s crèche.

As reported in last week’sSouthside People, there wasshock and anger at what wasdescribed as the “sudden” an-nounced closure of the SmallWorld Crèche that has been op-erating for over 11 years at thehospital.

Parents claim that hospitalmanagement had “out of theblue, and without consultation, discussion or agreement” sud-denly announced that thecrèche would close on Friday,August 29.

There are 50 children cur-rently using the crèche that hasa staff of 12.

According to parents, overthe last 11 years hundreds offamilies have benefited fromthe excellent care of the man-ager and her team.

“As working parents in Tal-laght Hospital we rely on excel-lent quality childcare for our

children to facilitate our workand provide us with peace ofmind,” one parent said.

“In this regard, one of thereasons to assist in this processis the provision of an on sitecrèche to allow parents to workon campus, yet have closeproximity to our children.”

Following a meeting withparents, Brid Smith of PeopleBefore Profit called on Ministerof State Brain Hayes to inter-vene.

“I was invited to a meetingwith the parents of the SmallWorld Crèche in Tallaght Hospi-tal,” Ms Smith said. “The par-ents I met are nurses, radio-graphers, physiotherapists andadmin staff who all do vitalwork in the hospital.

“They are all worried sickabout the future.

“The crèche provided an es-sential service. It opened at

“It was also convenient forwomen who were breast-feed-ing as they could drop over dur-ing lunchtime and feed theirchildren.

“It will be impossible for par-ents to find another crèche thatcan offer this.”

Ms Smith added: “Parentsare paying $900 per month, which is the equivalent of a sec-ond mortgage, but they werevery happy with the high stan-dard of care that their childrenreceived.

“The parents feel that thehospital is using impending newregulations as a reason to closethe crèche and creating prob-lems where none exist. Even ifthe crèche did fall short of thecontd on page 2

“The closure of this crèche isan anti-woman, anti-familymeasure being imposed onhealthcare workers who alreadywork in a high stress environ-ment due to the chronic under-funding of the health service.

“I am calling on MinisterBrian Hayes to immediately in-

Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe alsoexpressed his dismay and shockat what he described as a“short-sighted decision” andcalled for a U-turn on the pro-posed closure.

“This decision fails to ac-knowledge the positive workcarried out within the crècheover the last 11 years. It willmake life really difficult, if notimpossible, for working parentsin the hospital currently availingof the crèche for their youngchildren.

“The reality is that there justisn't 50 crèche places availablein Tallaght,” Deputy Croweadded.

“The parents have now onlythree months to source an alter-native crèche for their childrenfollowing this closure ultimatum. If this harsh decision goes aheadit will mean 50 young peoplewill be left without childcare.

“I am appealing to the ChiefExecutive Officer and his boardto reverse this decision and con-tinue to provide enabling facili-ties to young families affectedby this announcement so theycan continue to work in theiremployment in the hospital.”

Crime can bring out the dark side in all of usTony McCullagh

THERE'S a memorable scene in Guy Ritchie's film 'Snatch'where Vinnie Jones' character jams a man's head in thewindow of his car and starts to drive off. The hapless victimis forced to run faster and faster as the car accelerates be-fore he is unceremoniously released and collapses onto theroad. I imagine that's what I'd like to do if I was carjacked.

But this is just a fantasy andmy reaction to such a traumaticevent may not be as swift ordramatic as in the movies. In re-ality, would I drive off with adangerous criminal still at-tached to my car, hearing himplead for mercy as I put the footdown? The honest answer isprobably not

But that's what happens insociety when we are faced withnew forms of criminality. Fearcan bring out the worst in usand put dark thoughts in our

heads.Just look at Ryan Tubridy's

out of character reaction whenhe recently interviewed a self-confessed domestic abuser onhis radio show. RTE's golden boyis not the type of person you'dnormally associate with vio-lence but you could forgive hislack of restraint when he toldthe cowardly thug that hewould have broken his legs ifhe had subjected his loved onesto such abuse. Quite frankly, I'vea whole new respect for Ryan

Tubridy. It was an honest re-sponse to being confrontedwith a firsthand account of thismonster's history of violenceagainst his wife. I doubt Tubridywould ever follow up on such athreat but I can understand histhought process.

Most people don't have anatural propensity for violencebut do possess a primal urge toprotect their families. Howwould you respond if con-fronted by a drug-crazed in-truder inside your home whileyour children slept close by?Would you be paralysed by fearor would your survival instinctkick in? It's impossible to knowwhether you would meet vio-lence with violence unless youwere actually in that situation.

I personally believe thatburglars' human rights are di-luted as soon as they illegallycross the threshold of a prop-erty, but I also realise that it ismorally wrong to physicallyharm another human being. That's what separates most de-cent, law-abiding members ofthe community from low-lifecriminals and petty thugs.

While media reports of ag-gravated burglaries and carjack-ings can feed into ourinsecurities, it is important thatwe don't get caught up in thehysteria generated by theseevents. Such incidents - while

disturbing and horrific experi-ences for the victims - are stillrelatively rare in this countryand there is no evidence yetthat we are facing a carjackingepidemic similar to the onethat plagued post-apartheid

South Africa. I'd like to thinkwe're someway off from hav-ing our vehicles modified to in-clude extreme anti-theftdevices such as flamethrowersor Tasers.

As with most forms of

crime, the most effective de-terrent to would-be carjackersis prevention. By adopting acommonsense approach - suchas keeping valuables out ofsight and making sure your cardoors are locked at all times -

drivers can help avoid becom-

ing the next victim.

Stephen Hughes was 12years old in 2001 when he diedin the fire in the den where hehad been sleeping overnight.

Dermot Griffin (54) of Bal-lyfermot Road, Ballyfermot hadpleaded not guilty at Dublin Cir-cuit Criminal Court tomanslaughter at Rossfield Av-enue, Tallaght on September 1,2001.

After a 13 day trial the juryof six men and six women de-liberated for just over six hoursbefore returning the majorityverdict.

Judge Patricia Ryan thankedthe jury for their service. She re-manded Griffin in custody until

June 3 when she will pass sen-tence.

Supporters of the victim’sfamily shouted “yes” when theverdict was read out in courtand his mother began crying.

The accused stared aheadimpassively throughout pro-ceedings.

The main evidence againstGriffin came from three wit-nesses who placed Griffin at thescene. Under cross examinationthey admitted they were abus-ing heroin at the time and hadgiven statements to gardai atthe time of the fatal fire whichconflicted with their later state-ments and their evidence to the

cuting, said that a "very dramaticchange" came in the case in2012 when one of these wit-ness, Tracey Deegan, came for-ward and told gardai she hadlied in 2001 to cover for Griffin.

Ms Deegan (38) said thatGriffin, her former partner, wanted to burn the hut because“he didn't want joyriders in thearea, he didn't want guards inthe area”.

Daryl Hall, who was aged 14at the time, described how hescrambled out of the burning hutand tried in vain to rescue hisfriend.

He said he was woken byscreams. “I heard screaming andhands pushing on my back. I re-member hearing ‘go go’, and‘aagh’.”

Mr Hall said he could seenothing except smoke. He saidhe pushed aside a pallet actingas a wall and pulled himselfthrough and up onto an outsidewall.

“I thought he was behindme. When I got on the wall, standing on the wall, I jumpedback down. I tried to lift up thedoor, I heard him coughing,” hesaid.

He told the court he was un-able to lift the hut open againand he got back up on the walland started screaming for help.

He said that number of peo-

ple came over including Griffin. The witness said the accusedasked, “was there someone inthere?” and then put his handson his head.

Ms Deegan had originallytold gardai in 2001 that Griffinhad stayed on the sofa with herall that night after they had

smoked heroin and watched amovie. She told this trial thatshe was covering up for Griffinand had been coached.

A neighbour Linda Prentice, who was also a heroin addict atthe time, said she saw Griffinthrow a lit white object into thehut and that the hut then went

on fire. The trial also heard that

James Farrelly told gardai thatGriffin had come up to him onthe night and told him "if youopen your mouth I'll kill you".

When gardai put some ofthese witness statements toGriffin in 2006 he told them: “I

guarantee you it's all lies. We'llprove it in court. I want it to goto court. I want to have it dealtwith.”

Another witness, JasonLambe, said that Griffin had toldhim not to mention his name tothe gardai.

After losing two stone andeight and half pounds she hasbecome a very happy andhealthy role model for her threechildren.

Before Alison lost thisweight she had an inner sad-ness and very low self-esteemand when she saw a familyphoto the harsh reality of howher weight had spiralled out ofcontrol really hit home.

She had three young chil-dren to think about and sheknew she really needed to beable to show them ‘do as I do,not do as I say’.

"I learned to make smallchanges to how I cooked, shop -ped and ate,” she explained. “Iwas still eating family favouriteslike spaghetti bolognese, Sun-day roast dinners and fish andchips.”

Eating when and what shewanted, Alison said she felt soempowered and satisfied withSlimming World’s ‘Food Optimis-ing Plan’ that she went on tolose a stone in eight weeks.

This gave her the confidenceto get back on her bike whichshe had got through the Cycle toWork Scheme in 2011 but hadn’thad the confidence or fitnesslevel to use it.

Now there is no stopping Al-ison, her husband Brian and chil-dren Katie (9), Jack (7) andCharlie (6). They all look forwardto their family cycles as a way ofkeeping fit and enjoy them-selves as they spend qualitytime together in a healthy andfun way.

So are Irish businesses getting there? In a recent survey conducted by IPSOS MRBI andBank of Ireland 67% of Irish SME owners stated thatthey are optimistic about the next 12 months and 61%expect to grow their businesses in the second half ofthis year.73% of respondents believe the Irish econ-omy is stable or growing, and 63% believe employ-ment in Ireland will improve in the year ahead. 47% ofSMEs said their one big ambition for the year aheadwas business growth with 10% citing increased profits.

How might your bank help to achieve your busi-ness goals for the rest of 2014?

Gabriel Bannigan, Regional Manager, Dublin, Bank ofIreland explains how we can help.

1. Supporting your borrowing needs First on the list for those applying is an up to date busi-ness plan which includes details of; background, man-agement and organisational structure, market researchand a marketing plan, distribution, sales, operationsand financial management. The second and evenmore important piece of information is around the fi-nancials and repayment capacity – outlining balancesheets, profit and loss accounts and cash-flow state-ments. Finally, there is the credit application form thatneeds to be completed and we are available to helpcustomers do this.

We fully expect demand from the SME sector for creditto continue to grow in 2014. Bank of Ireland approved€4bn in new and increased funds to the sector in 2013

and in the first quarter in 2014 we approved €1.1bn.This works out at over 500 businesses and farmersborrowing funds from the Bank every week.

2. Supporting key sectors like AgricultureOne of the sectors that is showing good growth is theagri/food sector. Providing specialist finance options aswell as advice is key to the sector. One of the biggestchanges over the next year will be the removal of milkquotas in the dairy sector. This will see many dairyfarmers considering the best ways to grow and expandproduction, and many will need to access finance tofurther their ambitions. Bank of Ireland has the avail-able credit and appetite to support the agri sectorthrough this development opportunity.

3. Helping you start up a new businessStarting a new business is an exciting time for entre-preneurs, but it can also be very challenging. Impor-tant choices will include selecting your banking partnerand researching the extra supports they provide suchas access to local accountant and solicitor practices.Last year, 16,000 new businesses chose Bank of Ire-land to partner them in their new ventures.

Finally our recent National Enterprise Week is a tangi-ble way of how we support SMEs. 1,200 businessesshowcased their businesses throughout our 250-strong nationwide Branch network. In addition, over200 speed networking and credit clinics were held anda series of Economic breakfast briefings and SocialMedia clinics held in various locations across thecountry proved very popular.

Is your bank helpingyou get there?

Whether you are running an existing business or considering starting a new one, choosing abanking partner for your business can be one of your most important decisions. You need aBank that will help you to get there, wherever your there is. It might be to export to new mar-kets, purchase new property, get your business mobile or access new working capital.

For this honour, we sign upmonths in advance, often paydearly, and never regret it. Whilethe logistics of setting up shotscan sometimes be a headache, this comes with the immense joyof being all alone with magnifi-cent art.

This past year I’ve beenaroused (artistically) while alonewith Klimt’s sultry Kiss in Vienna;I’ve stood silent and solitary be-fore the mysterious Mona Lisa inParis; and I’ve marvelled atLeonardo’s Last Supper in Milanand Michelangelo’s David in Flo-rence.

My experience isn’t thenorm, and most travellers don’thave the option of quiet time ontheir own with art masterpieces. But there are many ways to feelthat “wow” moment when trav-eling in Europe.

Start with the thought that“art” is more than a painting ona museum wall or a statue in acloistered gallery. Tune up yoursenses, and you’ll find yourselftreated to artistic experiencesthat others miss.

Occasionally, something assimple as opening a hotel win-dow can turn into a lovely sur-prise. In the early evening inChartres last summer, for exam-

SHORT BREAKS WITH

Europe’s Powerful Artistic ExperiencesMY TV crew and I often enjoy the rare privilege of filminginside Europe’s great museums and palaces on days whenthey are closed to the public.

Enjoy a Turkish delight in vibrant Antalya

ple, a thunderstorm rolledthrough, cleaning out the muckyair.

I opened my window, andthere in the near distance glis-tened France’s most famouscathedral, its stones warmed bythe setting sun. I positioned mychair for the view, put my stock-ing feet on the windowsill, andenjoyed one of those great Euro-pean moments.

It’s really when you - thetraveller - enter the equationthat the best art experienceshappen. But it can be hard to feelengaged when you’re shufflingthrough Europe’s most crowdedmuseums on hot, crowded dayswith mobs of tourists.

If you’re traveling in peakseason, consider venturing be-yond the blockbuster must-seesights. Look for those Europe-perfect art moments to makeyour own. Here are a few of mycurrent favourites.

In Prague, I took a trolley ridejust a few blocks beyond thetouristy, crowded city core to anondescript building, theVeletržní Palace. Inside, in a cool, spacious gallery, I found myselfvirtually alone with the 20 mas-sive canvases of Alfons Mucha’smagnum opus, the Slav Epic.

Mucha is well known for hisdecorative Art Nouveau designsfrom the early 20th century, buthe poured his heart into this ex-pressive painting cycle, whichpowerfully connects Czech his-tory with the humanity of theSlavic soul and eons of beingdowntrodden and dominated byneighbours.

Staring at these epic sceneswith larger-than-life Slav kings, warriors, and maidens, I foundmyself appreciating the time-lessness of the struggles of Eu-rope’s weaker tribes.

Some of Europe’s mostthought-provoking art is prehis-toric - like the Lascaux Cave inFrance’s Dordogne region. Guidesin the area call this cave - withits frescoed horses, deer, andbulls - the “Sistine Chapel of theprehistoric world.”

The vast cave looks amaz-ingly like my (very healthy)colonoscopy photograph. Butprehistoric caves need help tobe brought to life. That’s whatmuseums are for.

Looking at the collection oforiginal artefacts in the nearbymuseum, I actually felt a con-nection with my ancient ances-tors. Their fish hooks and barbedspears would work as welltoday as when they were made17,000 years ago.

I imagined the fine jew-ellery, tenderly strung with stag

teeth and tiny shells, charmingfriends, family and loved ones12,000 years before more mod-ern people built the great pyra-mids in Egypt.

As travellers, we prize speed- from bullet trains to Internetconnections - but it can alsothreaten our ability to simplypause and enjoy. These days, it’smore important than ever toslow down and smell the roses,or even the people, to noticethe play of the up-lighting on anensemble of Gothic French stat-ues.

I was sitting solitary on abench enjoying the floodlit fa-cade of the cathedral in Reims,France. It was dark, and I wasmunching on a late dinner - arustic baguette with cheese.

Suddenly the bum on thenext bench leaned over and of-fered me a swig from his crum-pled-up plastic bottle of redwine. I didn’t take it, but thegesture and his smile, juxta-posed with that glorious Gothicfacade, warmed my meal andhelped complete an experiencethat gave me a memory I’ll

enjoy for the rest of my life.Thoughtful, rewarding travel

goes way beyond collecting fa-mous sights. It’s more about col-lecting insights, andappreciating the experiencesthat surprise, thrill, challenge, inspire, and connect us.

or Kaleiçi, is the picturesque quar-ter in the city centre. With its nar-row winding streets and historicwooden houses, bars, restaurantsand Ottoman-style boutique ho-tels, it’s a lovely place to wanderaround or base yourself whilevisiting.

Kaleiçi can trace its originsback to the Roman period, whenit grew around the old harbour, shielding it from the west andwelcoming the passage of pro-duce from the east. By taking aboat trip from Kaleiçi’s Harbour, you’ll be able to marvel at An-talya’s coastline, swim in pristinecoves and eat freshly caught fish.

If you fancy a day away fromthe beach, why not tackle the Ly-cian Way? The 510 kilometre

There is good public trans-port all along the trail should

LEO has a problem. It seemsthat everywhere he turnshis life has took the shapeof some grand conspiracy.

Each person that crosses hispath seems to know so muchmore than he does, about him-self, and his life.

Here and there Leo surfacesto take a breath of the normalitythat surely rules, but somethingpulls him back in, back down, into the mad slipstream whichgathers strength by the mo-ment.

As a thirty-something citydweller Leo is not by any meansa strong or outstanding charac-ter, in fact he is quite ordinary, and happy in that description, but something (or someone) inthe universe seems to havepicked him up on its radar any-way.

One evening Leo goes outfor a jog in the park, and expe-riences something which isquite out of the ordinary, andout of character, for him, but hetries not to make a big deal outof it. It just happened.

But then this experiencesnowballs unexpectedly and (forLeo) unintentionally creates ajuggernaut out of everythingthat he thought he was.

Leo’s life from there on isthoroughly controlled by thisone moment of indiscretion.

Leo marries, travels to Mo-rocco for his honeymoon, andthis is where things really beginto spiral out of control. Never-theless, Leo, ever an optimist, iskeen to believe that things arenot as they increasingly come toseem.

ABOUT THE AUTHORJEANETTE Rehnstrom’s interest in writing was

given its first serious push when her grandmothergifted her with a beautiful round-keyed type-writer when Jeanette was just young.

Born to a Finnish mother and a Swedish fa-ther Jeanette spent her childhood in Sweden al-though her travels began early with summersspent in Finland and France.

In her teenage years Jeanette becamefriendly with part of the Stockholm Surrealistgroup, and participated briefly in a subgroup.

In her late teens she moved to London andfound a home in the Troubadour Café in EarlsCourt, which had a long history of a focus on writ-ing, art and music, which still was strong in the

1980s.At 20 years of age she moved to Los Angeles,

and later New York, where she continued to de-velop as a writer.

However, it was not until Jeanette moved toDublin in 2004 that she really began to makemore lasting inroads with writing.

From 2005 she contributed regularly to GCNmagazine with feature articles as well as twomonthly columns, and later began to providebook reviews for the Irish multicultural weeklynewspaper Metro Eireann.

In 2010 she contributed a story to The IrishWriters’ Exchange’s well received Dublin: Ten Jour-neys, One Destination.

Bebove is her first published novel.

Age & Opportunity’s new book, Lifeis for Living, was launched last weekby Maureen Kennelly, Director of Po-etry Ireland, to inspire people withthe thoughts, hopes and dreams ofIreland’s older population.

With contributions from well-knownpeople such as Edna O’Brien, Tony Ward,Olivia O’Leary, Christy Moore and PaulineBewick, the book reveals the events andideas that have shaped the contributors aswell as their dreams of a better future forIreland.

Life is for Living tells you what, if any-thing, gets Eamon Morrissey out of bed inthe morning; how the BBC’s Robin Dayended up talking to a young CatherineMcGuinness about contraception; why

Mary Russell wanted to be a bishop; whatCamille Souter thinks is needed to makeart work and even how Thomas McCannended up in the Hong Kong film world.

The stories and candid thoughts of the29 interviewees will inspire and surprise;these are tales of long lives still inprogress, still pushing for change, stillmaking a difference.

Speaking at the ceremony, Maureensaid: “This inspiring and entertaining bookprovides a perfect blueprint for a betterIreland and should be required reading forpeople of all ages.”

The book is the brainchild of Age &Opportunity, the national organisationthat inspires everyone to reach their fullpotential as they age through the Beal-

taine festival, Go for Life its and educationprogrammes.

“We were looking for an interestingproject to celebrate our 25th anniversaryin a way that encouraged all older peopleto find their voices,” said CEO CatherineRose.

“And when we began to speak to dif-ferent older public figures we haveworked with over the years, lots of fasci-nating and inspiring stories began toemerge.”

SLIM 4 LIFEHi my name is Clodagh Bury,

This sounded great to me so I gotin touch with some professionalpeople and we worked along withthe HSE and formed a companycalled Slim 4 Life, and it does what itsays, take the weight off for life.

I have lost 3st 8lbs using the FoodPyramid and I would like to inviteyou along to one of our friendlyclubs, where you will receive a verywarm welcome.

Bowel screening involves afree, quick, easy-to-useBowelScreen home test everytwo years while in the age-

Professor DiarmuidO’Donoghue, Clinical Lead,

Bowel screening programmeaims to save lives

A GOVERNMENT-FUNDED programme is now offering regularfree bowel screening to men and women aged 60 to 69.

welcomed the programme. “BowelScreen will save

lives, making it a life changingpublic health intervention,” hesaid.

“Bowel cancer is the second

most common cancer amongmen and women in Irelandwith almost 2,400 new casesidentified each year.

“It is so impressive that thissimple BowelScreen test, which can be carried out athome, has the potential toreduce mortality from bowelcancer amongst theparticipating population.”

Professor O’Donoghue saidthey are delighted with theearly interest in BowelScreenand thanked those who havealready participated.

“However, the continuedsuccess of the programme forboth the individual and ourentire population is very muchdependent on everybodyacting on their invitation,” hestated. “It is so important totake part when invited.”

Professor O’Donoghue saidthe vast majority of peoplewill have a normal home testresult and will be invitedagain in two years’ time.

“Yet for a small numberthis home test may indicatesomething that requires

further investigation, which isso important as if bowelcancer is found early, there isa much better chance oftreating it successfully,” headded.

The BowelScreen home testlooks for tiny amounts ofblood in the bowel motion(also called a stool) which arenot visible to the eye. Mostpeople will have a normalresult (95 per cent).

In the small number ofcases where a result showstraces of blood not visible tothe eye, a colonoscopy will beoffered in a screeningcolonoscopy unit in a hospitalorganised by BowelScreen.

The BowelScreenprogramme is beingintroduced on a phased basisand it is expected that allthose on the register will beinvited for their first screeningby the end of 2015.

In the meantime people inthe age range can check theyare on the register bycontacting Freephone 1800 4545 55.

Rap icon back on stage

Hollywood stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum causedchaos in the city when they came here to promote theirnew movie ‘22 Jump Street’.

The famous pair took time out of their glittering sched-ules to talk to students. They were then presented withmedals from one of the college societies. I’d give themmedals any day!

The oh so handsome Michael Fassbender has said therewas loads of messing about on the set of his latest X-Men movie, ‘Days of Future Past’.

The actor stars alongside James McAvoy and Hugh Jack-man in the film which sees Wolverine travel back in timeto change the future.

Speaking exclusively to Dublin’s Q102, Michael saidhimself and the guys couldn’t stop playing with pellet gunsin between shoots and were constantly getting into trou-ble!

Liam Payne thinks he looks like David Beckham. The One Direction singer joked he would work as a

showed just how similar they look.I don’t know about you but I can’t see One Direction

packing it in anytime soon!

It seems good things truly do come to those who wait.Hollywood actress Halle Berry says she feels blessed to

have been able to give birth to her son last year as shedidn't think she could conceive.

Halle also married the baby's father, Olivier Martinez, after saying she never thought she would get to tie theknot (who in their right mind would turn Halle down!)

The late Michael Jackson was among the performers atthe Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

He appeared as a hologram at the event singing ‘Slaveto the Rhythm’, which is taken from his posthumous newalbum ‘XSCAPE’.

It’s reported organisers used the same technology thatmade the late rap legend Tupac Shakur appear at theCoachella Music Festival in 2012.

nomic issues to personal politicsThe reference to Kurt Von-

negut in the title is accompaniedby a quote from the satiricalwriter in one of the song’s threesub-choruses: “Of all the wordsof mice and men, the saddestare, ‘it might have been’.”

As fans and media may re-member, Francis declared a sud-den retirement from touring atthe end of his ‘Li(f)e on theRoad’ world excursion in 2010.

Many people misinterpretedthis as a resignation from musicaltogether as his three albumdeal with Epitaph Records cameto its conclusion.

“It sort of offends my sensi-bilities to hear that some peoplethought I gave up music,” Fran-cis remarks. “I’ve been writingsongs since I was eight-years-old.

“As far as creative energygoes, my entire adult life andthe bulk of my childhood has

been dedicated to this craft.“I don’t even think I could

stop that train even if I wantedto.”

In reality, Francis removedhimself from the non-stop grindof the tour circuit in hopes of de-veloping a healthier domesticsituation.

“No matter how much timeI spend by myself, I’m constantlyaware of how I need to keep thisship afloat,” he added. “If not forme, then for the others whohave jumped on board with me.

“That’s not the main motiva-tion for what I do, but it’s proba-bly good to feel pressured intostaying active outside of mybubble.

“I’m stressed, overworked, and exhausted regardless of mysituation, so I might as well stepinto the fire rather than justwatch the world burn aroundme.

“At this point, that sounds alot better to me than spendingthe rest of my life as a recluse, wondering what might’vebeen.”

One for the boys: VW Golf GTDby Seán Creedon

MAKE no mistake the Golf GTD is noisy, but it’s the kind of noise thatboy racers love.

I drove an automatic version ofthe Golf GTD last week and the day Ipicked up the test car I thought I wasbeing followed down the road by animpatient boy racer. But it was myown car that was making so muchnoise.

In case you don’t know, GTDmeans sporty diesel, while GTI is thesporty petrol version of the regularGolf, which many people thoughtwould have been named Irish Car ofthe Year last November. The regularGolf is so solid and reliable and youdefinitely won’t go wrong buying onefor family use, but the GTI or GTD aredefinitely for the younger generationand predominantly males.

The four-door version I drove hada 2.0-litre diesel engine which pro-duced 184 brake horsepower. That’senough power to get from zero to100km/h in just over six seconds. Idrove a black version, which didn’t

look as stylish, at the front, as the GTI.Externally the only hint that it was aGTD were the red brake calipers, which really looked the part. To behonest it just looked like a regularGolf.

However, all the power is underthe bonnet and when you sit in andstart the car then you realise just howmany horses are working for you. TheDSG version had two drive choices, normal and sporty, will provide youwith a wide range of engine sounds.

Inside there is a neat sporty-look-ing steering wheel and stainless steelpedals accentuate the sporty-look.The interior, which had grey Tartanseats, front and back was very im-pressive. The front seats were verycomfortable and while the roof wasblack, at night you get a nice lightingthanks to white ambience lighting. There is room for three people, or twoif you want to leave down the cup

■ The Golf GTD is noisy, but it’s the kind of noise that boy racers love.

holders in the middle.I always comment on radios in test

cars and there was no problem withthe Golf, typical German efficiency. Butthe CD player was located in the glovecompartment, which made a change. It also had an electronic handbrake, in-stead of the old fashioned type; don’tknow what the boy racers who like todo handbrake turns would think ofthat! The boot is a decent size and youget a ‘mini’ spare wheel.

Prices for the regular Golf start ate20,395 while the Golf GTD start ate37,470. Road tax in the GTD ise270. So plenty of power and whileit may be a bit expensive, it’s also fru-gal and I wouldn’t disagree with VW’sclaims that you can get up to 67mpg.

At this stage of my life I’m proba-bly too old to drive a car that’s bestsuited to a boy racer and I think Ishould stick with a regular Golf. Pity Ididn’t review cars when I was 21, butthen you won’t get a press car untilyou are at least 25. Maybe it’s just aswell as I would have picked upenough speeding penalty points tolast me a lifetime.
