Another Week, Another Record for Dyani Last week’s Running Times commented on Dyani Shepherd-Oates breaking the Southland hammer record stated that it’s a gauarantee the record will broken again, probably more than once.

It only took a week for the prophecy to come true. At Surrey Park on Saturday Emma Ryan threw 45.82, 6cm further than the record Dyani set a week earlier. However, in Dunedin on Saturday Dyani went even

better, throwing 46.39m to set a new mark.

Next weekend the pair go head to head at the New Zealand Secondary School champs. Both are medal chances. Will we see the Southland record go for the third time in three weeks? Don’t bet against it.

Winds dominated Surrey Park for the Saturday meet with only the throwers coping. While the sprinters and jumpers had tail winds, it was too strong and put everyone off their stride. And in the longer races the runners looked like they were going up Bluff Hill on the back straight.

The most impressive of the jumpers was 13 year old Rachel Boniface with a 4.78 in the long jump. Good jumping in the conditions, and a young athlete of great promise.

(Why Coffee Session? Because the $5.00 cost is the price of a cup of coffee – a bargain for athletes and club coaches/parent helpers wanting to develop long and triple jump in their club.)

This 2 hour practical session is for coaches/club parent helpers and athletes and follows on from the session last weekend, with emphasis this time on run up and actual jumping. Cost of $5.00 for coaches. Participating athletes free providing their personal or club coach is attending, otherwise athletes also $5.

* Constructing a run up

* Developing Board accuracy

* Drill to develop jumps skills

The session is ideal for clubs to help their 12 – 14’s aiming towards Colgates and beyond as well as older athletes new to jumps.

Athletes and coaches please register by email with Lance Smith at address of this newsletter with name, club and if an athlete your coach’s name.

This session is part of the Athletics NZ Jumps development Plan – a follow up high jump session planned for later.

No Senior T & F this week.

Next senior meet Dec 10, ‘A’ programme. (Immediately following jumps coaching session.

NZSS Champs this weekend

The NZSS is the biggest, most exciting and hardest to win championship on the national calendar. Over 1500 athletes are entered for the three day competition, with some Southlanders among the favourites.

It’s great to see our young athletes cheering for and supporting each other, regardless of what school they are representing, what club they may belong to.

Athletes, know before you go!

This takes you to the timed NZSS programme

http://nzssaa.org.nz/static/nz-tf-2016/timed-programme.pdf And this to the technical info you should be familiar with. Including call room times.

http://nzssaa.org.nz/static/nz-tf-2016/technical-info-standards-2016.pdf And track runners, you also should be aware of progressions – how many go through to the next round in each heat. SO, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!
