INTERIM REPORTS
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“The secret of a happy life is respect.
Respect for yourself and respect for others.” - Ayad Akhtar
Unfortunately, over the last six months,
three of our students have been involved in accidents on the way home
while riding their bikes.
All three have been collisions with
vehicles; all three have been while riding on footpaths and thankfully all three have had
their helmets properly fitted and worn, saving them from worse injuries than they received.
We need to stress that riding on the footpath is illegal.
The Police have asked us to help communicate this to
students, parents and caregivers. Please also ensure that all students cycling have correctly adjusted helmets
that are securely fastened.
CYCLING SAFETY
The interim school reports will be
sent home with students tomorrow, Friday 16 March.
FROM THE SCHOOL COUNCIL
Last year’s Hot Cross Bun sales
allowed us to raise $876.89 in profit that will be put towards the
construction of study spaces in the common room, for the benefit of all Year 13 students.
Development of these study spaces will hopefully be
finished by the 3rd term this year, just in time for exams.
This year, we are once again asking for your help to do the same amazing job you did last year and try to raise a
similar amount of money, or hopefully more. This year’s funds will be used to purchase school blazers which the
students can wear to outside events, to make our
students look more presentable and recognisable as students from Fiordland College.
Thank you for your participation. Order forms will be
sent home tomorrow with students and must be returned
to school Tuesday morning (20 March).

LUMSDEN MATERNITY CENTRE
COMMUNITY MEETING
Wednesday 21st March 7.00pm at the Lumsden Memorial Hall
The SDHB has announced it will no longer fund birthing or post natal care at Lumsden maternity. Our current
contract runs until the end of September 2018. The SDHB has agreed to come to the meeting to discuss what a hub
will look like for Lumsden. It is essential we have strong attendance at the meeting to show we need to keep the
Lumsden Maternity facility open. Free buses are on offer
from Te Anau leaving the Community Centre at 5:30pm. Text numbers for bus to 0272168100. For
more details refer to the Lumsden Maternity Facebook page.
Sid Spence won the South Island
Junior Archery Champs in Christchurch and has been chosen
to represent New Zealand at the Junior Oceania Archery Champs in
New Caledonia in July.
Well done!
Georgia Mullally, Abigail Swanson,
Makenzie Wilson and Jacob Lewis were invited to participate in
P r og ramme Incuba to r a t Southland Hospital.
This programme involves three trips to Southland Hospital to visit different departments and listen to a
variety of health professionals talk about their career in health. It is a great opportunity for students to be
exposed to something not normally accessible to the general public.
PROGRAMME INCUBATOR
ATHLETICS
Y12 Biology students ventured into the Hunter Mountains
and braved some adverse weather conditions to study plant distribution patterns above the bushline.
Feedback from students emphasised how useful this was
for their understanding - the temperature and weather
variations they experienced, as well as practical data gathering and research skills.
BIOLOGY FIELD TRIP
Well done to one of our 2017 school
graduates, Dyani Shepherd-Oates.
Dyani won the New Zealand Under 20 Women’s Hammer Throw title at the
National Championships in Hamilton last
weekend.
Dyani also placed 6th in the Senior Women’s Hammer Throw and another former student, Rosie Robinson,
won yet another New Zealand Race Walk title.
