Santa Legends From Around The World

Sinterklaas-Netherlands: Sinterklass is the Dutch version of Santa Clause. With his traditional red costume, flowing white beard, and all-around jolly demeanor, he closely resembles the more famous North American Santa. But un-like Santa, he comes to the Netherlands every year in late November by steamboat from Spain where he is paraded through the streets. On December 5th, children place their shoes by the fireplace, and if they were good, find candy and gifts in the morning or coal if they were naughty. Belsnickle—Germany, Austria, Argentina: The role of the Belsnickle is to be the disciplinarian of Santa’s entourage, usually depicted as a mountain man with fur covering his body. He is a character to be feared, and in most regions he is employed as a sort of warning to coerce kids into being good. Tomte-Scandinavia Countries: Originally the Tomte were said to be small, gnomish characters that kept watch over family farms. Over time the Tomte eventually became integrated into the more traditional celebration of Christmas and are seen today as the elves who assist Santa in his workshop. Yule Lads—Iceland: The Yule Lads are a group of thirteen mischievous crea-tures that have largely taken the place of Santa Claus in the Icelandic cele-bration of Christmas. They have become known for their playful nature. For example, Ketkrokur uses a long hook to steal meat, while Gluggagaegir spies into people’s window to steal in the night, and Stekkjastaur is said to walk on peg legs and harass sheep. The Yule lads also give gifts to children—well-behaved kids receive small gifts in their shoes in the thirteen nights leading up to Christmas Eve. Naughty children are given potatoes. LaBefana—Italy: Befana is a witch-like character who is said to have given food and shelter to the three wise men while they were en route to visit the baby Jesus. She is portrayed as an old hag who rides a broomstick, and she typically wears a black shawl and carries a bag of gifts. She supposedly does not like to be seen and is said to use her broomstick to whack any child who spies on her—a clever way of keeping the kids in bed while parents arrange gifts in the night. Befana, like Santa Claus, supposedly climbs down the chimney, and leaves gifts for the good kids and a piece of coal for those who have been naughty.

Father Christmas-UK, France, Spain, US: Father Christmas stands as the biggest influence in the cre-

ation of the more modern American Santa, and he is still the primary Christmas gift-giver in the hol-

iday legends. Like Santa he rides a sleigh pulled by a team of reindeer, climbs down a chimney to

leave gifts for good children. Snacks left for him and his reindeer differ according to the country.

Some countries have him dressed in green and some dress him in red. Some have him living in the

North Pole, some say Greenland and others say the Lapland in Finland.

USO CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE Would you please join us in participating in the USO’s Christmas TOY Drive? Toys can be donated at our Christmas luncheon on December 4th. When selecting a toy, keep the following in mind: The toy should be small so that it can fit in luggage. The toy should be new and in original packaging. Please don’t wrap the Toy, remember it must go through security. PLEASE Indicate for boy or girl, if not obvious on the package.

CHRISTMAS DOOR PRIZE NOTES Season's Greetings Ladies!!! We are all looking forward to our Christmas Brunch on December 4th! Many of you bring in gifts for the door prize table (this is not to be confused with the gift ex-change). The door prize gifts are set up and labeled, each participant will be given free door prize tickets upon check in. (We, the door prize committee label individual bags for each gift and so you can choose the gift you prefer by placing your ticket in the corresponding bag). Since everyone will be arriving at the same time it will be difficult to label the gifts you bring in a timely manner. We would appreciate knowing the gift item you plan to bring in advance, that way we can pre-label most of the bags. If you would be kind enough to email Bette Miller at' [email protected]' it would streamline the "door-prize gift arrival" and be greatly appreciated! We look forward to a wonderful brunch together!

Our President’s Annual Report By: Daryll Ann Carter-Sulliman

SHRW currently has 280 enthusiastic and committed members. You all should be congratulated for your efforts with the 2012 campaign to get our Republican candi-dates elected. We have been contacting all members for the renewal process and anticipate continued growth for 2013 I would like to take a moment to wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday embraced with the family values we observed while working for the Romney Cam-

paign. I am so proud to be a member of SHRW and this community. Please set your table with the love and pride of country while we unite to remember all of our military families and take pride in our country. We can count our blessings in knowing and working together and look forward to a future of new friendships. I wish to encourage all of you to attend the Blue Star Mothers’ “stocking” of Christmas goodies for our military. We gather at the Henderson Convention Center on November 27th & 28th to put together stockings. Packages are sent to our military. Vol-unteers are needed to help on Monday to lift heavy boxes and organize for this event. Arrive anytime between 9 – 6 to help for all day or a couple of hours. I want to brag about our wonderful informative luncheons that have promoted our in-crease in membership. We support a Literacy Program in the schools and will be sup-porting a 2013 essay contest for Del Webb Middle School 7th & 8th graders. Our basket raffle to support our Wounded Warriors has raised over $5,000 to donate to our military. I believe that our growth continues based on the enthusiasm and warmth of our mem-bers. Our Newsletter list continues to expand as we welcome women thru our Face book, Website and Twitter accounts. I am so proud of our membership. SHRW had at least 120 members participate in the election.. We made house calls to over 12,000 homes in our immediate club area. We did surveys and promoted early voting turn out. These numbers do not include the hours of volunteering at the Campaign Office by doing phone and walks outside our club’s targeted area. Our members also became the chefs for the campaign volunteers and spent hours developing new recipes to encourage all to ‘meet in the lunchroom’ to replenish and move forward enthusiastically. As of November 1st we had a tally of over 7,500 hours which included Voter Registration at the DMV, Grocery & Retail Stores, Lo-cal Restaurants and Several Churches. (Please get your hours in to Lynn Armanino) I wish all of you and your families a healthy, happy and safe holiday season. Please join us at our Christmas/Hanukah celebration December 4th. God Bless America as we move into 2013 united by our new friendships and love of country.

1. Republicans retained con-trol of the U.S. House of Representatives' 2. Voters in Alabama, Mon-tana, and Wyoming all passed measures limiting Obama care. 3. Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, one of the conservative movement’s brightest rising stars, overcame establish-ment GOP opposition to clinch a U.S. Senate victory in Texas. 4. Corrupt-o-crat Beltway barnacle Rep. Pete Stark was finally kicked out of of-fice in California.

5. Despite entrenched teach-ers’ union opposition, a char-ter school initiative in Wash-ington state triumphed. 6. Despite entrenched Big Labor support, a radical col-lective bargaining power grab in Michigan failed. 7. Oklahoma voters said no to government race-based preferences in college admis-sions, public contracting, and government hiring. 8. Montana voters said no to boundless benefits for illegal aliens. 9. Washington state ap-proved taxpayer-empowering limitations on its state legisla-ture’s ability to raise taxes. 10. For the first time since Reconstruction, the GOP won control of the Arkansas state house.

victories in the Kansas state legislature. 18. Republicans won his-toric supermajorities in Tennessee. 19.Across the country, Republicans reached a post-2000 record number of gubernatorial victories. 20. Conservatives who were devastated by the national election results demonstrated how to lose with dignity and grace. There will be finger-pointing and recriminations and soul-searching, but committed activists can’t and won’t lose heart. We’ll regroup, recover, and keep fighting for our country.

.11. Voters rejected tax hike ballot measures in Arizona, South Dakota, and Missouri. 12. Louisiana voted to pro-tect gun rights. 13. Kentucky voted to pro-tect hunting and fishing rights. 14. Parental notification for minors’ abortion prevailed in Montana. 15. North Carolina Republi-cans claimed the governor’s office, congressional gains, and control of the state’s general assembly. 16. Southern Hills Republican Women Remembering Veterans By Michele Turner

Every third Thursday of the month, a group of SHRW members attend the internment Services for Veterans who have no family or friends. The service starts at 8:40 am at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. We usually meet at the Anthem Center at 7:45 to car pool.

If you would like to attend the service, please contact Michele Turner at [email protected] or 606-0983 or Sydney Ingram at [email protected] or 617-1924 Please be sure to contact Michele or Sydney in advance in the event that there is a cancellation. No soldier should take their final walk alone.

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard during this past election. Because of your hard work and dedication to the Republican Party, Joe Heck was again elected to Con-gressional District 3 and Dean Heller beat Shelley Berkeley for the Senate seat. Carolyn von Gortler with voter registration, Kris Kohn with the telephone banks and Karen Illes with spearheading neighborhood captains deserve special acknowledge-ment as well. I am so impressed with all of you who gave so generously of your time. Total Clark County voter turn-out was 80.97% while statewide turn-out was 80.56%, staggering results for the largest county in Nevada. Your hard work and commitment made this happen. Kudos to you all and CONGRATULATIONS FOR A JOB WELL DONE! Lynn Armanino, Campaign Director

Sears - Christmas shopping this year. I know I needed this reminder, since Sears isn't always my first choice. It's amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and Sears hasn't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year? What commitment you say? How does Sears treat its employees who are serving in our military? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being on active duty. Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical in-surance and bonus programs, for all employees who are serving. I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears at least once this year. Be sure to find a manager to tell them why you are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement & feedback it well deserves. Pass it on. I decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent the following e-mail to the Sears Customer Ser-vice Department: I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the Internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your company. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item, even if it's cheaper at that store. This is their answer to my e-mail: Dear Customer: Thank you for contacting Sears. The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback. Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our men and women can make. This is the "least” we can do for them. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time. Bill Thorn Sears Customer Care 1-800-349-4358 Please pass this on. Sears needs to be recognized for this outstanding contribution and we need to show them, as Americans, we do appreciate what they are doing for our Military!!! It's verified by: http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/sears.asp In contrast: Target will not allow the Salvation Army or the military to solicit or collect outside any of

their locations. The following reply was recently received from TARGET management: Veterans do not meet

our area of giving.

An Early Christmas Gift

to our President

During this Christmas season the members of Southern Hills Republi-can Women want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to our president, Daryll Ann Carter-Sulliman for the many things you do. This past year you have entertained us at the luncheons with your po-litical philosophy as you shared your personal stories. You fired your housecleaners after you saw a disappointing bumper sticker on their car and hired Republicans to replace them. You interviewed workers for house painting, electrical or plumbing projects and only hired those you learned were Republicans. Besides getting doctor’s credentials you inquired into their political views. You truly support Republicans and exemplify how to embrace Republicans in how you lead your life. You always welcome new members and immediately encourage them to get involve. You reach out to all members asking them to partici-pate in different club efforts. This helps new and old members get to know each other and creates an aura of inclusion among a member-ship of over 200 members. By going out of your way to make each member feel welcomed you have brought a warmth and graciousness to our club that makes it all the more special. Leading by example was strongly evident during this past election cy-cle. You participated in voter registration, walked neighborhoods, made phone calls, supported members’ house parties, canvassed your neighborhood to get people to the polls, and did everything you encouraged us to do plus so much more. SHRW had better than 50% of its membership actively doing something during the entire 2012 year largely due to your guidance and encouragement at every meet-ing. Our membership continues to grow because of the high standards you have set for SHRW. You bring humor to our luncheons, keep us motivated, exemplify dedication to Republicans and exhibit a kind-ness to all. You always make a point of acknowledging the hard work of others so it is now our pleasure to take this opportunity to say thank you for all you have done and continue to do. We are lucky to have you.
