President’s Message July 2015

"Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty called for a statewide review of the guardianship system." Congratulations to Rana Goodman who has been asked by Justice Hardesty to serve on this new guardianship commission he is forming. All your hard work has not been in vain and now it can continue in earnest.

The Republican Club of Sun City Anthem will host Marco Rubio on Saturday, July 11th. If you are not a member of SCA and want to attend you need to come as a guest of an SCA resident. This looks like it will be standing room only so you won't want to miss this event!

The RWSN PAC's (Republican Women Southern Nevada) Red, and Blue Gala is fast approaching. It' s Saturday, July 25th and is a "Tribute to our Military" honoring Congressman Joe Heck with special invited guests. Go to http://www.republicanwinpac.com/ and get your tickets on line or print a reservation form to go with your check. Get your tickets now. You don't want to miss this one! Each year's event is better than the last.

We have 2 more important events happening. Thanks to Andria Coleman, Project 150's Back to School Drive we are again collecting school items. Check out the list in this newsletter for items to bring to the July meeting. Also, under the guiding hand of Jordan Aldrich we can start bringing children's books to the luncheons each month as of July and ending in September for our Book Drive for Spread the Word for Pre-K thru 8th grades.

The NFRW will hold it's National Bi-Annual Meeting September 12-13, 2015 in Phoenix. This is a great opportunity to meet Republican women from across the USA and network with like-minded women. It is an easy drive to Phoenix or a quick flight so I hope to see many of you there. It is hosted by the in Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada Federation clubs so I hope many will attend. Contact me if you want to sign up and need help.

Back by popular demand this fall is another Ronald Reagan Library bus trip Oct. 10-11, 2015. Thanks to Carolyn von Gortler's organizing efforts we'll be advising you soon how to sign up with all the pertinent details. This is a fun and special event not to be missed!

Finally, don't forget the NvFRW Board meeting is October 16-18 in Reno this year. We'll be voting on the new board at this time so it's an important meeting. More details will be forthcoming soon. So much to do, so little time.

I can't get over how the world today is so upside down. I'm reminded of Lewis Carroll's THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS with the following cast:

*Nancy Pelosi is the Mad Hatter "You mean you can't take less," said the Hatter: "it's very easy to take more than nothing." And “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would." *John Boehner is the white rabbit "I'm late, I'm late for a very important date." *Barbara Boxer is the March Hare at the tea party “I have an excellent idea: let's change the subject.” “You might just as well say,” added the March Hare, “that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what I like’!” *Harry Reid is the King of Hearts "Take off your hat," the King said to the Hatter. "It isn't mine," said the Hatter. "Stolen!" the King exclaimed, turning to the jury, who instantly made a memorandum of the fact. *Hillary Clinton is the Red Queen "Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before break-fast.”

*Barach Obama, one known to dance to his own tune and reality, is the Emperor from another fable. “ 'The emperor is naked!' The parade stopped. The emperor paused. A hush fell over the crowd, until one quick-thinking peasant shouted: 'No, he isn't. The emperor is merely endorsing a clothing-optional lifestyle!' ”

“Curiouser and Curiouser!”

“People who don't think shouldn't talk.” ~ Lewis Carroll

Did You Know

By Sydney Ingram Last month we discussed the concept of liberty which is the foundation on which America was founded. No one expands on liberty in America than President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address, January 31, 1990. “From the earliest days of the Republic, this nation’s Founders believed that the United States had a special mission in the world. George Washington spoke of it on April 30, 1789, moments after taking the oath of office as the first President of the United States. ‘The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply…on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.’ The success of their experiment, these early Americans hoped, would hasten the spread of liberty around the globe.” “….By 1917 there were approximately a dozen democracies in the world. Today, there are more than one hundred and most of them have written constitutions. While the charters of many of these nations vary greatly from the U.S. Constitution, its endurance and stability has surely lent encouragement and credibility to the cause of freedom-loving people everywhere who have labored to throw off tyrannical regimes and devise for themselves a system of self-determination and government based on the consent of the governed.” May America remain a beacon of hope for those seeking liberty.

In My Opinion: By Rana Goodman—Legislative Chairman As a small child, growing up in the aftermath of WWII in London and then when the intervention of the American and Canadian forces saved my country from the Nazis, I learned early on to appreciate the military.

In the 1960s, I was one of those people that proudly wore my MIA bracelet; determined to keep it on until I heard that “my man” was safely back on US soil. I was also one of those people that demonstrated to end the war in Viet Nam and bring our solders home.

In other words, I have a very healthy respect for the men and women that put their lives on the line in the service of their country. Once retired, these veterans should be held in the highest regard; because without them, America and many other parts of the world, would have ceased to be FREE long ago. That said, there are those among us that see our senior generation, (that is you and I) as “disposable.” To some we are no more than a bank account that they can plunder and manipulate because THEY CAN and no one has stopped them for many years. Let me tell you about a veteran named Cazee. Cazee is in his 80s and has cataracts. Some time ago, the VA agreed to surgically remove the cataracts, but since he is under guardianship, arrangements must be made through the private-for-profit guardian in charge of his life. Nothing can be done to him or for him without the guardian’s approval. And there is nothing that can be done about that - short of contesting the guardian in court. To date, the guardian does not feel this surgery is needed. Cazee lives at a Group Home where I also discovered that he is sedated much of the time. Perhaps an 80 plus year old Viet Nam vet is too much work for them? I sat in court and heard the judge ask the representative from the home why, Cazee was being given the drug when it was not protocol for dementia patients. The representative never denied that Cazee was being given the drugs, just that he was getting them at bed time. A friend filed a complaint with Elder Protective Services as did I. A long-time friend of his has been attempting to replace his current guardian so that she can move him to her home. She has generously offered to care for him one-on-one rather than the situation he is currently in. Each time she has attempted to visit Cazee the staff at the group home tells her he is not there. On her last attempt, she was told that written permission would be needed from the Senior Law Project… SAY WHAT! To visit a friend? Unfortunately, this is proving to be a herculean task. The Group Home is, at the very least guilty of isolating this 21 year veteran. Personally I believe a man who has put his life on the line for this country deserves far more respect than that! I wrote Congressman Heck for help with VA intervention and I must tell you he got back to me within the hour. However, the people his aide referred me to for assistance for Cazee never responded to our pleas for help. There is a legitimate question whether another section of the Nevada law, (NRS160) should apply. Under this section of the law, a veteran, if requiring a guardian, cannot be assigned to a guardian having more than five wards. Cazee’s current guardian, represents over 100 wards.

I called the VA to get more information on how this statute would apply and after speaking to more people who answered different extensions than I can remember and getting multiple polite but empty answers, it seems no one can really be definitive in giving the concrete documentation for the court.

And, at the time I write this, Cazee is in the hospital receiving medical treatment, due to a fall - or so claims the

guardian. Could he have fallen due to the heavy doses of sleepy-time meds he is being given? Your guess is as good as mine.

All I know is that veteran Cazee deserves far much more than he is getting!
