Welcome to the South Wales Weekend Rally 2019

Croeso I Gymru - Welcome to Wales

For the third time in the history of Holstein Young Breeders it is a pleasure to welcome you to our area giving us an opportunity to show our appreciation for the superb weekends spent in other areas covered by our breed society.

Once again we will use the superb facilities at Trinity now a University which has expanded rapidly providing enhanced facilities including the headquarters of S4C, the Welsh language television channel.

During the weekend the highlight will be a visit for the judging competitions to the internationally acclaimed Brynhyfryd herd owned by the George family who have bred black and white cattle on the foothills of the Preseli Mountains for over sixty years. Showing was an important part of the business in the early days leading to numerous championships locally and nationally including the Royal Welsh with the pinnacle being that famous day at the Royal of England in 2000 taking all the main awards of the day. The latest milestone was recognition in Holstein International as the herd with most animals classified excellent within the breed hence a visit will no doubt be one to remember not only for the quality of the animals but being one of the largest milk production units in Wales.

The area also boasts numerous other herds of outstanding quality with winners and finalists of the Premier herd competition with national acclaim as Master Breeders for several of them.

Again for the third time by kind permission of the auctioneers the excellent facilities at Carmarthen Livestock Centre are available for the ‘Field-to-Foto’ on Sunday morning. Traditionally one of the foremost dairy markets in the country having hosted numerous noted herd dispersals and sales from which leading families throughout the country originated.

Enjoy your time here like your ancestors have done and do come again.

‘Croeso I Gymru!’

Welcome to South Wales on this great year of events and celebration, not only hosting the National AGM for our new Holstein UK president Mr Bryan Thomas, we have the great honour of hosting the National Holstein Young Breeders weekend. This consists of the National Stock Judging final at the world-renowned ‘Brynhy-fryd’ herd and on Sunday we shall be hosting the National HYB ‘Field-to-photo’ competition day at the Carmarthen Livestock Centre. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to South Wales and giving a bit of ‘Welsh’ hospitality, hope-fully as good as other clubs have shown us in the past.

It is a great privilege to be the chairman of this excellent HYB movement, which is close to my heart, being a dairy farmer. I have learnt a great amount of skills need-ed for the show ring, clipping, stock judging and public speaking. I have had the opportunity to speak and learn from senior members of the movement, visit local dairy farms and be involved in local and National shows. I have gained new friends from not only South Wales, but all around the UK.

I have learnt, to be a member of HYB, it isn’t all about owning the top Holstein cows, or even owning any dairy cows; as long as you have a passion for the Hol-stein breed, have an interest in stock-judging and preparing them for the show ring, then the HYB is the movement for you.

On that note, I hope you find your time in South Wales enjoyable, and we look forward to hosting you.
