He played base-ball in Marescalco’s All-America League in 1973-76. He played in the National Baseball Congress of America, and was se-lected Nebraska All-State, both in 1974. He was selected for induction into the Nebraska Old Timer’s Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975. Lad taught at Marrs Jr. High in Omaha, a prep school in Phoenix, and then spent 30 years teaching at SHS during which time he received his master’s degree from UNO in education. He was named Outstanding Teacher at SHS in 1972. He was a member of the 1958 football team that was later inducted into the SHS Packer Greats.

We hope you will all plan to attend the 7 p.m. Homecoming Game on 9-23-11 and the party afterwards at the Firefighter’s Hall on 60th and Grover Streets. Ticket order form is in this issue. Please come and bring your friends.

The 2011 Hall of Fame will be held 10-8-11 at 10 a.m. at the Livestock Exchange Building, and the Packer Sports Greats Hall of Fame will be held 10-26-11 at 6 p.m. at Anthony’s Restaurant. All are wel-come to join us for these outstanding events honoring fellow Packers. Please nominate candidates using forms in this issue for these honors next year.

Our Bowling Tournament and Spaghetti Dinner both on 3-26-11 were a lot of fun. Although our Poker Run participants did not enjoy good weather on 5-14, they had a good time anyway and won some prizes. The inaugural All-School Dance on 7-22 at the Ramada Inn (formerly Holiday Inn) on 72nd and Grover was just a blast. The fun Golf Tournament on 7-24 ended with another delicious meal enjoyed by our loyal and talented golfers. A great time was had by all.

If you have any time to spare, we could use your help to mail TOOTERS to our 20,000 plus alumni list. Volunteers tab and label each issue before mailing. It’s a great way to connect with classmates and meet new alumni. Please call the office to offer any time you can spare. Also, please contact the office to establish scholarship memorials for your classmates, family or friends; or to help us fund teacher grants, or provide other financial assistance needed by your school. Most of all send in your membership dues! We are grateful for your help and support as are the students and teachers of SHS.

Please tell us what is happening in your lives so we can share your news with your classmates and friends in our AlumNotes section. Send us items for our Sports Corner also. We welcome your ideas and encouragement and thank you for your continued support.

    Respectfully submitted,Judi (Clark) Koubsky, Secretary

    EVERYONE DANCEDAT THE

    DANCE OF THE CENTURY

The All Alumni Dance held at the Ramada Inn (formerly the Holiday Inn) on 72nd and Grover Streets on 7-22-11 proved a fun night for all attendees. The Grease Band ensured a packed dance floor as they played all the favorites of the crowd. Door prizes were awarded and the television set we were raffling was won by John Reica. Jackie (Schultz) Casper-1961 chaired the event with the help of her assistant, Julie (Riha) Diehm-1966 and class representa-tives from 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1968 served on the com-mittee. It was great to see so many Packers and their friends still rocking the hall with their S.O. shuffle and high energy. We found a 1941 classmate Ellen Jones Soren-son who was all dolled up for the dance and she is featured on this photo page. Karen (Fahey) Wilson-1961 had the lucky number for the split-the-pot raffle drawing! Con-gratulations to all involved in this scholar-ship fundraiser – a great evening! Enjoy some photos of this fun event.

    CONGRATULA-TIONS TO THE

This reunion committee, chaired by Jackie (Schultz) Casper, worked hard to provide a memorable 50th Reunion on 7-23 at the Livestock Exchange Building Ballroom. Dave Weisser led the group on a very interesting tour of the school Saturday morning and the committee provided refresh-ments afterwards. The committee put together a directory

of their classmates, and a video of school and later memories for each attendee. They also collected scholarship funds to donate to a current SHS student. SHS teacher, Dr. Jean Bressler, was our guest and addressed the group. A great time ensured that the 1961 class is looking forward to the next one! Committee members are pictured below to right: Front row: Janet (Crofford) Katz,

Janice (Ishii) Palmer, Karen (Fahey) Wilson, Jackie (Schultz) Casper and Joan (Novak) Welsh. Back row: Paul Kracher, John DeGeorge, Sharon (Homic) Yaeger, Vera (Sabaliauskas) Crnkovich, Judy (Jensen) Tesar, Judy (Zdravkovich) Alter, Judi (Clark) Koubsky, Jim Leonard, Denny Koubsky and Vic Riha. 1961 CLASS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AS PACKERS

Our reunion was held 6-11-11 at the Bellevue Berry Farm with over 160 in at-tendance. The theme was Country Western and a number of graduates had fun with the theme. A ‘split-the-pot’ drawing was held with 50% of the funds going to the South High Alumni Association Scholarship fund.

The evening included a lot of reminiscing accompanied by good food, music, and re-freshments. A humorous video, taken some years ago in SHS hallways, stairwells, etc., of the good old school days was shown and enjoyed by everyone. If you’d like a DVD of the video, send your name and address with $10.00 payable to Lori Hunter, 14616 Fir Circle, Plattsmouth, NE 68048. Also if you’d like a class photo contact Hassel

& Funk Photography of Papillion, NE at 402/991-4413. They did an outstanding job. • 1941-Lawrence Vogltanz of Bremerton, WA toured the Alumni office while in Omaha recently. He is visiting fam-ily and friends as well as enjoying what our city has to offer. So far he has found his way to the Czech Festival and parade in Wilbur, NE where he made several new friends. He said he will enjoy the polka music at the Legion Club before going home. Lawrence lost Velma, his wife of 64 years, last year. They have four chil-dren. Thanks for stopping, Lawrence!

1951- Nadine (Barber) Covey was fea-tured in a front page Omaha World-Herald story about her pen pal friendship with a Japanese girl which began when her family sent a care package to the internment center in Wyoming. The Japanese girl sent a thank you note to Nadine and thus began a long-distance friendship that took 67 years until they could meet face to face. What a heartwarming story!

1951-Rose (Chaka) Schreiber of North Richland Hills, TX wrote, “I love getting my TOOTER. It is so nice to read about all the alumni and their successes, and all the things going on. You are doing a great job, so keep mine coming.” Thanks and we sure will!

1952-Marilyn (Henni) Schroeder writes, “Hi Folks, thank you for the most impres-sive publication of the Spring 2011 Alumni TOOTER. Many good stories and infor-mation for those who have graduated from SHS.” Thanks for your nice note!

1955-Welcome South High Grads of 1955. On 6-15-10 about 100 classmates from the Class of 1955 got together at the G I Forum on 20th & N Streets. Lunch and reminiscing were the order of the day. We were there from Florida, Missouri, Chicago, and all over Nebraska. We had many nice door prizes including $20 bills. Many of us get together the second Tuesday of each month. Anyone interested in joining us, please contact Karlene (Tatman) “KT” Deja at 402/733-6303.

1956-Lee Hoden’s widow Chris sent this note to our office on behalf of the family following Col. LeRoy Hoden’s death on 10-1-10. “He appreciated receiving your alumni information through the years. I met him at Creighton University where I went to graduate school. We especially enjoyed the 22 years Lee spent in the Air Force Academy in Colorado, four years in Spain, and four years in Turkey on assignments. We raised three wonderful children – Brian who is a mechanical engineer, Shannon who is a paramedic fire fighter and Jarra who is a lawyer for the City of Albuquerque. We have one grandchild, age 6 and Phaedra is a joy. Lee was very ill for four years and, thank God, is no longer in pain. He spoke highly of his high school years. God bless you all.” Our condolences on your loss and thank you for the nice note! 1959-Tom Dunn purchased a 1910 SHS Year Book called “The TOOTER” on Craig’s List for $20. There were 45 gradu-ates listed, including Ms. Fern Eads.

1959-Wayne Woodard donated 1955-1959 student directories, TOOTERS, and farm-ing programs for the alumni archives. We thank you very much!

1960-Jeannie (Hahne) Johnson. We thank the family of Jeannie Johnson for donating a SHS beanie, pep rally picture and song sheets. We appreciate donated memorabilia for our archives.

1960-Terry Matula (far right) is pic-tured with his mother Alice (Cecetka) Slovek-1939 and his cousin Denny Koubsky-1961 during a spring visit to Omaha.

1960-Judy (Sebron) Yacio recently had a problem with her personal banking informa-tion being exposed in a window envelope by a Texas State agency. She sought as-sistance from her State Senator and other officials as well as a public advocate for the daily Fort Worth newspaper. Not only did the Teacher Retirement System listen to Judy’s concerns, but they changed their procedure within one weekend to stop using window envelopes altogether. Although this change came too late for Judy’s benefit, she said she is appreciative that these people listened and did something about it. “People need to write letters, contact elected of-ficials, and contact their newspaper and TV public advocates to get help,” she empha-sized, “as we live in a world where far too many are too careless with our confiden-tial information. We must never resign ourselves to being helpless victims.” Good going, Judy!

This tenacious trio invaded the Australian Continent for 25 days in March/April, 2011, and it’s probably not been the same since! We managed to cover half of the continent by air, rail, cable, boat, car and our own two feet. Our adventure started in Sydney where we saw “Barber of Seville” at the Sydney Opera House and then buckled up with harnesses and cables to climb and conquer the Sydney Harbor Bridge on an absolutely stunning day. We also managed to get to Featherdale Park and had a ball feeding baby kangaroos and hugging the very cute koala bears. After a whirlwind tour of the city and surrounding areas with our Aussie friends, Jan and Joan, (thus, Margaret & the 4 J’s) the three of us took off to Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef and headed out to sea to snorkel over the coral reef. It was like being in the movie, Finding Nemo! The beauty of this reef was indescribable. We eventually traveled into the Outback for a totally unique experi-ence. Much of our travel was done by car (driving on the “wrong” side of the road and navigating many, many roundabouts.) And, much of the time we seemed to be the only car on the very narrow roads for hours as we traveled to historic sites and

National Parks. Luckily, we always carried snacks because places to eat were far and few between. Also, we had good gas mileage in our small car, and it’s a good thing, too. We filled up in a remote area, and it cost $75 for a half tank!!! We thought there must be a mistake!! We should have lost a lot of weight too, but didn’t, because dining out cost about three times as much as it does in the States. We shared meals and kept it to two a day but we always allowed for wine! During our time in the Outback, we were able to hike six miles all the way around Ayers Rock which is a sight to see in all of its glowing red texture. It is abso-lutely gorgeous at sunrise and sunset. In this area, we had to wear our hats with bug netting the entire time we were anywhere outside, or the tiny flies swarmed our faces. Regardless, Ayers Rock is still very popular with tourists! The Aborigine people are very protective of their rock and ask people not to climb it, as it is sacred, but the Park officials allow it when weather permits--an unfortunate clash of cultures. We were not able to meet with or learn much about the Aborigines. They seem to be very private,

and the Australians did not seem willing to offer any insights when asked. Next, we flew to Melbourne for another tour of the big city sites. Then we rented another car to travel to Phillip Island to see hundreds of penguins march out of the sea at dusk to find their hotels in the brush and sand for the night. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take pictures and also had to be very quiet. Those little penguins were just adorable! Next, we headed out to the Great Ocean Road to view the magnificent scenery of the southern coastline including the famous Twelve Apostles rock formations. Ac-cording to our tour book, we should have allowed three days for this trek, but we managed to do it all in 16 hours as we had run out of time in Australia. It was time to board our plane for our 15 hour flight to LA. The three of us definitely made memo-ries of a lifetime. We are now looking toward our next grand adventure!!!

    SPORTS CORNERDAVE RIMINGTON

HONORED!Former Husker Center, Lombardi and Out-land Trophy winner Dave Rimington-1978 was honored when the Big Ten Conference announced his name would be part of a new set of trophies created to recognize the league’s rich and storied history.

Rimington, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and Ohio State’s Orlando Pace were chosen to represent past legends and leaders on trophies that future generations of Big Ten athletes will compete to win. The Big Ten Offensive Line Player of the Year will be awarded the Rimington-Pace Trophy.

The awards are part of a lineup of 18 new trophies unveiled in conjunction with the Big Ten’s announcement of new football division names and a new logo for the 2011-12 academic year.

During his career, the Omaha South grad helped the Huskers win back-to-back Big Eight titles in 1981 and 1982. Nebraska led the nation in rushing during his senior season. A four-year letterman and three-year starter, Rimington was named team captain and capped his senior season by winning the 1982 Lombardi Award. Also, a two-time first-team academic All-American, Rimington was honored by the NCAA as a Top-Five Student-Athlete and was selected as a National Football Foundation and Col-lege Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete in 1982. He was also a three-time first-team academic All-Big Eight choice from 1980 to 1982. In 1999, he was selected to the Walter Camp All-Century team.

In 2004, Rimington became the first Nebraska student-athlete in history to be inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. A first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1983, Rimington played five seasons with the Bengals, and played two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring in 1989.

Rimington is the president of the Boomer

Esiason Foundation and resides in New York. In 2000, the first Rimington Award sponsored by the Boomer Esiason Founda-tion to honor college football’s center of the year was presented to Nebraska center Dominic Raiola, whose jersey No. 54 was retired in 2002. The annual award is pre-

sented in Lincoln. This year’s Rimington Banquet was held at the Rococo Theatre on 1-15-11.

Congratulations, Dave – we are proud you are a Packer!

SchoolNewsDuol Mayot said, “Basketball is Back at South!” Doul, senior on the Omaha South boys varsity basketball team is pictured 3-1-11, after a district game win against Millard North. Congratulations to the boys basketball team for their district victory! The ceremonial snipping of the net brought an ovation South has not experienced since 1993. The final score was 60-51. The last time South won a state title was back in 1990. South has waited years for this basketball night and the team made their school and com-munity proud. South matched up with Bryan at the State Tournament in Lincoln on 3-10 and unfortunately lost that game.

Joel Barron, senior at SHS, was featured in a 2-19-11 Omaha World-Herald story working with other OPS stu-dents on Packasso Project to teach them the art of graffiti.

Students Joel Barron, Olivia Rodriguez and Eder Barron were commissioned by the Omaha Police Department to paint a mural of

a Police Badge and the Police Mission Statement on a prominentwall in the Southeast police precinct station. Their sponsor Fairouz Bishara was also pictured in the 5-4-11 Omaha World-Herald article.

Hey, State: The Pack is Back!!!

South is going to State The Omaha World-Herald announced that in the article by Dick Chatelain on March 2nd. 2011. South had just beaten the Millard North Mustangs 60-51 for the district title. It has been 21 years (1990) since South last won the state championship and 18 years since they had a berth in the state finals. Most of these players were not born yet.

The district final was an exciting game. South stayed close throughout the first half down only by 2 at the end of the half 25-23. At the end of the 3rd. quarter south was leading 42-36. The mustangs went for close to five minutes without a point in the 3rd. quarter. Duol Mayot hit the big play at the end of the third that kept South in the lead for the rest of the game. The 4th quarter had major contributions from
