We will have to start this edition of Sopanam with a loud round of applause for the participants of GOKULOLSAVAM 2013 conducted by Bala Darshan Kuwait. The students have shown immense interest and showcased the true nature of why Bala Darshan Kuwait was formed. They have reiterated our commitment to the up keeping of our culture and heritage while living in a foreign land and in a different culture.

It is essential to bring up our future generation in tune with our ancient wisdom that has today become the foundation of various researches and studies. The advices given to us by our sages and learned people have often been brushed aside in our pursuit of materialistic happiness.

Kerala is witnessing a spate of violence in connection to the recommendations given by eminent environmentalists. While we agree some of these recommendations may affect the livelihood of countless number of people living across the Western Ghats, it is also our responsibility to study the report and have a rational approach. The lifestyle being

adopted by vested interests in this area is bound to create immense damage on the environment. It becomes our responsibility to change this to a more environment friendly development that will ensure peace.

It is unfortunate that the government is keenly following the careless attitude it has been supporting for many years and now ignoring the Gadgil Panel Report on the preservation of Western Ghats Eco systems. Instead of properly educating the populations on the recommendations, the government seems to involved in a political conspiracy with vested interests in the area to create violent atmosphere that will ensure that the Gadgil as well as the Kasturirangan report will be discarded,

Our philosophy has always been for the coexistence of science and spirituality for the betterment of the whole world. While we successfully launched Maangalyan, some people have questioned the need for spending huge amount of money on such missions when millions live in poverty in the nation. Indians have always had the scientific temper to pursue knowledge and from ancient times we have given the world huge contributions from our findings. We need to keep this spirit alive in our young generation and not let it be brushed aside by the observations of a few hypocrites and socialites who spend time attending parties and fund raisers.

It is becomes important to make the citizens of our nation understand the need, the results of the various scientific researches that are being undertaken. They must also be made aware of the benefits of the results these yield. Many NGO’s like Vigyan Bharati, Swadeshi Science Movement, Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parshad have been instrumental in doing this work. But a lot more effort from the part of the ruling establishment in needed. These efforts will pave way for better citizens who think rationally.

As part of its social responsibility, Seva Darshan Kuwait is working towards the formation of the Kuwait Chapter of Science India Forum for the benefit of the students of Kuwait and hope to have the forum active by next year.

We take this opportunity to wish all the devotees of Lord Ayyappa who have stated their prayers and fasting to visit the abode of the Lord at Sabarimala and safe journey.

Swami Vivekananda's Divine Message

See for the highest, aim at that highest, and you shall reach the highest.

things are not bettered, but we are bettered, by making changes in them.

the only test of good things is that they make us strong.

Purity, patience, and perseverance are the three essentials to success, and above all, love.

Strength is in goodness, in purity.

Practical patriotism means not a mere sentiment or even emotion of love of the motherland but a passion to serve our fellow-countrymen.

Stand up, be bold, be strong. take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny.

if the whole world stands against you sword in hand, would you still dare to do what you think is right?

to be good and to do good--that is the whole of religion.

Great undertakings are always fraught with many obstacles.

it is better to wear out than rust out.

hold the ideal a thousand times, and if you fail a thousand times, make the attempt once more.

we must keep our dignity before others. unless we do that, we expose ourselves to insult.

Bharat, has always been a nation that has had a very high scientific temper. For a very long time Bharateeyans have been known to have never end-ing thirst for scientific knowledge and advancement. We are nation that pays respect to our saints, seers and scientists.

Whenever the world has been in chaos and confu-sion, we have had avatars, be it Krishna or Jesus, who have come to the world to remind people of love and compassion and ensured that love and compassion protected humanity.

Over many centuries, society has seen tremendous scientific progress and also a serious erosion of mor-al and spiritual values. Mankind today is faced with a serious problem of elements in the society who are troubles with the way of life we have evolved over a period of time. Sages like Swami Vivekananda have shown as our way through their teachings.

The scientific thought we know today is marked by the works of great scientists like Galileo, Bacon and Newton. Over centuries, their theories have shaped the way the world has developed and nations have prospered. Their studies differentiated the spir-itual aspect of human life from proofs and laws that governed the working of nature and machines. They took out the idea and concept of God or Supreme being from the minds of thinkers in the name o ra-tionalism. All theories where based on probability and equations. They proclaimed that all motion was based on mathematical equations and these did not require and divine laws and extraordinary observ-ers. This has left a great void in in the minds of the people.

Later the same impact started taking place in re-searches in geology, biology and other areas. The spiritual elements were again missing in all these studies and advancements. Since the 19th century science has made much advancement and has re-vised many of the earlier proved concepts.

The contributions of scientist like J.C. Bose brought to the forefront a new study linking the liv-

ing and non-living entities. He proudly remarked, “They who see but one, in all the changing, mani-foldness of this Universe, unto them belongs Eternal Truth – unto none else, unto none else.”

Modern scientists cannot understand or explain the connection of organic and inorganic. Science today is confronting many questions regarding the relation of matter and consciousness. Classical con-cepts are becoming obsolete with newer discoveries in the subatomic world. It is becoming impossible to describe with certainty the behavior of different par-ticles. Modern science is dealing now with Quan-tum Mechanics. One of the concepts by Bell implies that whatever happens in one part of the universe on a single entity has an effect that can be detected in any other art of the universe on a similar entity. The universe could not be anything but what it is.

The Chandogya Upanishad gives a dialogue be-tween Svetaketu and his father. When Svetaketu re-turned home after learning Vedas for twelve years, his father asked him, “Svetaketu, have you asked for the knowledge by which we hear the unhear-able, by which we perceive the unperceivable, by which we know the unknowable?” – “What is that knowledge?” asked Svetaketu. His father Uddalaka said, “That knowledge is knowing that by which we know all.” And further explaining the father pro-nounced, “In the beginning there was Existence, One only without a second. Some say that in the beginning there was non-existence only, and that out of that the Universe was born. But the question is how could existence be born of non-existence? In my opinion in the beginning there was Existence alone – One only. He the one thought to himself: Let me be many, let me grow forth. Thus out of himself he projected the Universe, and having projected out of himself the Universe, he entered into everything. All that is has his self in him alone. Of all things he is the subtle essence. He is the truth. He is the self. And that, Svetaketu, THAT ART THOU.”

In the Brahad Aranyak Upanishad the sage in-forms king Janaka about the true nature of Brahman,

The Role of Science and Spirituality for World Peace

“Brahman can be apprehended only as knowledge itself – knowledge which is one with reality, insep-arable from it. For he is beyond all proof, beyond all instruments of thought. The eternal Brahman is pure, unborn, subtler than the subtlest, greater than the greatest. By the purified mind alone Brahman is perceived. He who knows Brahman to be the life of life, the eye of the eye, the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind, – he indeed comprehends fully the cause of causes. In Brahman there is no diversity. He who sees diversities goes from death to death.”

New age science has striking parallels in the ancient Hindu Philosophy where the Cosmic con-sciousness connects every being with the rest of the Universe.

The famous translation from the Rig Veda con-tains the following stanzas:

Who verily knows and who can here declare it,

Whence it was born and whence comes this cre-ation?

The Gods are later than the world’s production,

who knows whence it first came into being?

He, the first origin of this creation,

whether he formed it all or did not form it,

Whose eye controls this world in highest heaven,

He verily knows it, or perhaps he knows not.

Today’s scientists are facing more and more ques-tions as they try to find the ultimate reality through experiments and mathematical analysis. Everyone is seeking the Ultimate Truth. So we notice that the language which many modern physicists are using is converging to the language of spiritual leaders.

Swami Vivekananda says, “This external world is the world of suggestions. All that we see we project out of our own minds... The wicked man sees this world as a perfect hell, the good as a perfect heaven and the perfect man sees nothing but God.” Vedan-tic philosophy beautifully plays the connecting role between science and consciousness. This world is neither true nor untrue; it is the shadow of truth. While new age scientists prove that the universe is a

hologram where each part is connected to the rest of the universe, so is the thought of the Upanishads.

The Big Question

Who works this hologram? Who controls all this? Who interprets these interconnections? This is sci-ence as it was originally conceived in the pursuit of understanding.

Lord Krishna in the Gita says: “I have interpene-trated through the entire Universe, like pearls strung on one string.”

Eastern philosophical concepts of living in har-mony with the nature is becoming more evident in modern day science research, be it physics, biol-ogy or any other studies. Scientific discoveries and inventions should be for the greater good of man-kind and the universe. The movement of every atom moves the whole universe with it. The advancement of science must truly be for the improvement of mind and intellect as we know it and for the pursuit of truth which will be grand unification of matter and spirit.

Sri. Vinoba said, science and spirituality is equal to world peace. And we must all be a part of achiev-ing this.

INDIA’S MARS MISSION :The exploration of Mars has taken place over hun-

dreds of years, beginning with the invention and development of the telescope during the 1600s. In-creasingly detailed views of the planet from Earth inspired speculation about its environment and pos-sible life – even intelligent civilizations – that might be found there. Probes sent from Earth beginning in the late 20th century have yielded a dramatic in-crease in knowledge about the Martian system, fo-cused primarily on understanding its geology and possible habitability potential.

On Tuesday, November 05, 2013, the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO), the national space agency(NSA), lobbed a three-thousand-pound spacecraft called “Mangalyaan” toward Mars. The orbiter’s mission is to map some of the planet’s sur-face and test for methane, a possible marker of life. If Mangalyaan reaches the Red Planet and swings into orbit on schedule next September, that alone would be a remarkable victory: more than half of the forty Mars missions launched around the world have failed. But the I.S.R.O.’s real achievement might lie in its sheer frugality.

The benefits are not just monetary: in a press con-ference, the I.S.R.O. chairman argued that India’s expertise with weather satellites, patiently devel-oped over the years, had enabled predictions precise enough to save thousands of lives during a coastal cyclone the month before. What is impossible to quantify, however, is the ignition of imaginations that attends such successes—the spurt of optimism and confidence that can urge people, even for a brief moment, to lift their eyes upward and aim a little higher.

Mars has long been the subject of human fasci-nation. Early telescopic observations revealed color changes on the surface that were originally attrib-uted to seasonal vegetation as well as apparent lin-ear features that were ascribed to intelligent design.

These early and erroneous interpretations led to widespread public interest in Mars. Further tele-scopic observations found Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, the polar ice caps, and the feature now known as Olympus Mons, the solar system's tallest mountain. These discoveries piqued further interest in the study and exploration of the red planet. Mars is a rocky planet, like Earth that formed around the same time yet with only half the diameter of Earth, and a far thinner atmosphere, it has a cold and des-ert-like surface. It is notable; however, that although the planet has only one quarter of the surface area of the Earth, it has about the same land area, since only one quarter of the surface area of the Earth is land.

Many people have long advocated a manned mis-sion to Mars as the next logical step for a manned space program after lunar exploration. Aside from the prestige such a mission would bring, advocates argue that humans would easily be able to outper-form robotic explorers, justifying the expense. If life exists on Mars, a manned mission could con-taminate it by introducing earthly microbes, so ro-botic exploration would be preferable.

The ESA has plans to land humans on Mars between 2030 and 2035. This will be preceded by successively larger probes, starting with the launch of the ExoMars probe and a planned joint NASA–ESA Mars sample return mission. Manned ex-ploration by the United States was identi-fied as a long-term goal in the Vision for Space Exploration announced in 2004 by then US President George W. Bush. The planned Orionspacecraft would be used to send a human expedition to Earth's moon by 2020 as a stepping stone to a Mars expedition.

ISRO’s next mission is already being planned with the Chandrayaan-2, its sec-ond major lunar mission, and first to in-clude a possible lander and rover, similar to NASA’s Mars rover. Initial plans had called for a joint launch with Russia, but following the 2011 failure, ISRO has said it is now planning to carry out the launch itself. Targets for a manned Indian lunar mission now sit out beyond 2020.

India's ambitious space mission to Mars demonstrates the country's capabilities and achievements in space technology. It also points out the reach of the country in many other fields. India, in the recent couple of decades, has exhibited its enthusiasm in entrepreunership and developed innumerable busi-nesses and production enterprises. All this is hap-pening even while cities and major towns continue to live in squalor and unhygienic conditions. The state of civic discipline is miserable. There is no pride in one's community, city, state and nation. The local governments do not care to enforce existing rules and regulations.

Politicians have mishandled their opportunities to elevate the country to modern standards. This may just be the time for technologists and scientists to

develop solutions to these problems and show to the politicos and Administrators that the people of India can indeed live in modern civilized environments.

Critics have attacked spending so much on space exploration while the country suffers basic infra-structure problems. In a recent interview with The Hindu, ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan defended the costs, saying his organization represents only one-third of 1% of the national budget, and of that, the budget for scientific and planetary exploration is only 7-8%, with most
