9.9.2k15...Guest Speaker, Senator Donovan Dela Cruz visited us at our September HCCW monthly meeting. The purpose of his visit was to update all of us on what is happening with “The Whitmore Project” in 2015. Land areas involved were defined as well as updates on the status of the entire project was conversed. There were many questions from Club members as this particular project has been in actuality for a number of years. Possibilites of growing ‘ulu – breadfruit – as a part of this project was addressed. Scientists are currently studying the healing qualities of ‘ulu. Global attention grows as the foods of our ancestors surface.

“September was a great month for 'ulu – breadfruit - in Hawai‘i. It was the official month to “Ho‘oulu ka ‘Ulu O Hawai‘i Nei”– to lift up and celebrate ‘Ulu in the State of Hawai‘i. As part of our statewide Breadfruit vs Potato campaign, more than 700 people learned how to harvest, prepare and cook breadfruit with Chefs Sam Choy and John Cadman.” Breadfruit Institute, National Tropical Botanical Garden Sam Choy’s demonstration of “ ‘ulu vs potato” was attended by HCCW’s Uncle Pila Short, Kupuna Ethel Ku`ulei Pakele and Vicki Pakele. Renewed interest continues in the healing effects of ‘ulu.
