Product design plays a vital role between the client, and the manufacturing of the product. The designer will take the idea from the client and go through several processes to find the perfect design. This starts with concept drawings, where numerous concepts are looked at. He will look at aspects such as ergonomics, making the product work to the best of its abilities, how the product will be put together, maintenance, materials, and manufacturability. The top three concepts will then be presented, the best of which will then be chosen by the client. Possible changes can be discussed before going into the refinement phase. In this phase further drawings will be done looking into every aspect of how the product looks, functions and will eventually be manufactured. These include: joining mechanisms, split lines for tooling, section views showing how components are going to fit inside the product, and all screws and bosses. A visual CAD model and

renderings will be done showing colour combinations, and scale. All of which will be presented to the client. The client can ask for minor changes and once approved the design phase moves into the CAD environment. Here all the standard components that are going into the product will be reverse engineered, with extreme precision, to ensure a model where there are no issues relating to location and clearance. Once perfect, the model will be rendered showing materials, final colour and other key areas of importance, and once again presented to the client. Once the design is accepted, completely the client can then opt for a prototype to be made. Depending on complexity, the prototype could be grown by a 3D printer or fabricated This eliminates potential issues before production takes place. We offer all these services with highly qualified and skilled designers for your benefit.

concept sketchingConcept sketching is a useful and inexpensive tool that is used to portray what the final product will look like. No manufacturing is needed. Our designers at Soitec are skilled in the art of both freehand and computer drawing. They transform a clients' idea from a mental picture to a visual concept sketch.

7 Product Design - Reverse Engineering

reverseengineeringWhen designing a product that comprises standard components it is crucial to reverse engineer them accurately so that they fit the product perfectly. Whenever we reverse engineer components we make sure that the dimensions are recorded to a tolerance of 0.02mm to ensure screw holes line up perfectly and the tolerances between the component and the product are under control. Reverse engineering also ensures components to look exactly like the real thing for rendering purposes so what you see is what you will get, thus keeping our standard of work on a very high level.

renderingMajor advancements in technology have allowed us to take a CAD model of the designed product and render it in a real world environment, add texture and take a virtual photo of the product showing exactly what the product would look like if it were real. It also helps to render rather than take a photo of the real product for large prints (over 14MP). Renderings are good tools for showing exploded views of products and how they function with a series of renders. One can also place the product or a range of products in a studio environment or real world environment with the click of a button, thus saving costs to hire photographers and setting up environments to shoot in.

engineering drawingsEngineering drawings are a really important tool when it comes to quality control for your product. All critical dimensions are recorded and compared to the final product. We strive to ensure that all the dimensions recorded are extremely accurate. The engineering drawings come in both physical and digital versions as a backup. These drawings are also used for legal purposes if there are any copyright infringements as they contain names, dates, issues and important notes about the product. E.g. Material, colour, wall thicknesses, surface finish and more.

13 Product Design - Rapid Prototyping

rapid prototypingIt is always advisable to make a prototype of your product before manufacture to ensure there are no mistakes in the products functionality, size and ergonomics. This is done through the process of three-dimensional printing, where the prototype is literally grown layer upon layer until completion. The process can create highly complicated forms and even working mechanisms such as hinges and gears, and even replicate the mechanical properties of the plastic the product will eventually be made out of. We work with an accredited partner to ensure that the process is done as accurately and as efficient as possible.

Visibility is a major aspect for companies when it comes to marketing. Our signage department comes fully equipped to design and make store signs, light box signs, edge glow, digital signage and any other form of signage to promote your companies image and public visibility. We use the best quality plastics and vinyl to ensure that the sign will not be affected by heat and UV light which causes the plastic to degrade and discolour. The signage team works in conjunction with the graphic design team. This ensures that the branding and colours match your company's identity exactly, and creates a look and feel that entices people to want to see more.

All our CNC cutters are zeroed before ever

cutting list to ensure accuracy

20

CNCprofilingWhen extremely accurate cuts need to be made to a piece of sheet material CNC cutters are the way to go. The cuts a r e c o n t r o l l e d b y a c o m p u t e r, therefore, eliminates human error and ensures a uniform cut every time. We are in the fortunate position to have three cutters which are zeroed before ever cutting list to ensure accuracy. The cutting process is quick, to keep up with lead times. We can also counter sink profiles for location purposes or add extra surface area when joining two or more pieces together. All burrs are chamfered to be safer to handle and for a more professional finish.

A Soitec speciality: we make use of specialised machinery to produce customised enclosures for products. A No Tooling Needed approach to sheet plastic solutions offers immediate, as well as a variety of, products. The enclosure should complement and enhance the product, which is why it is important to choose an enclosure that creates and projects the right image for both the product and the company it represents. Heavy duty plastic enclosures are important to the security of valuable technologies from physical damage and harsh weather condition. Our enclosures are built to an IP rating which ranges from 54 to 65. All enclosures are manufactured in-house to ensure a quality product and speed of delivery.

Applications Include: - Mining - Military - Displays - Signage - Security - Kiosks - Medical - Transport - Point of Purchase - Electrical - Tracking - Decorative

silicone castingThis is a cheaper alternative for batch production of plastic, polyurethane or resin-based products. Batch production of the parts should not exceed 50 units; however, multiple moulds can be made if more are required. The process of silicone casting starts with a grown or fabricated pattern of your desired product. This is then placed in a mixture of a specialised silicone paste and catalyst which sets around the pattern to create a negative mould which can be used for the final casting of the product. One can create translucent or opaque products and everything in between, in any colour you can think of.

25 Manufacture - Injection Moulding

injection mouldingWhen mass producing plastic components on a large scale (e.g. over 25 000 units) it is recommended to have them injection moulded. It is a process that can produce high volumes of product in a very short amount of time. Specialised tooling is needed for such a process. We design the tools and manage the machining to ensure that there are no mistakes which can be costly to fix. There is a wide variety of plastics that can be used in this process, and a plastic will be chosen to complement the parts function. Colour can be added along with surface texture. Twin shot injection allows you to inject two different coloured plastics. A highly versatile and efficient process for mass manufacture.

vacuum formingVacuum forming is an inexpensive, efficient method of creating items that have complicated, curved surfaces from one piece of plastic. The plastic used in this process comes in a sheet format, therefore, needs to have a uniform wall thickness in its design. The process starts by placing a wood pattern underneath a sheet of plastic in a chamber. The plastic is heated until it is soft and elastic. Once ready, the pattern is drawn into the plastic, pneumatically, and a powerful vacuum is switched on to stretch the plastic over every surface of the pattern. This creates a smooth complex shape which can be further machined, and finished.
