Survey  Background  

•  Conducted  in  October  2010  among  society  leaders,  primarily  na/onal  society  leaders,  from  ICO  email  list  via  Survey  Monkey  online  

•  Purpose  was  to  gain  a  beCer  understanding  of  how  the  value  of  the  ICO  is  perceived  by  society  leaders  as  well  as  to  learn  how  the  ICO  can  beCer  fill  their  needs  

•  Universe  was  215  individuals  –  50  respondents  =  23.3%  response  rate    

•  Eleven  addi/onal  respondents  through  ICO  Notes  solicita/on  for  total  of  61  respondents  

•  Survey  was  conducted  simultaneously  with  three  other  surveys  –  Subspecialty  Society  Leaders,  Ophthalmology  Educators  and  Prac/cing  Ophthalmologists

•  Two-­‐thirds  of  the  respondents  are  between  the  ages  of  46  and  65  

•  Twenty-­‐five  percent  are  45  or  younger

•  By  far  the  majority  of  respondents  (72%)  are  leaders  in  their  na/onal  socie/es  

•  Another  twenty  percent  are  leaders  from  an  interna/onal  subspecialty  or  na/onal  subspecialty  society

Ques7on  6  –  Primary  Role  in  Society  

•  A  third  of  respondents  iden/fied  themselves  as  chair/president  of  their  society,  followed  by  those  who  iden/fied  themselves  as  a  member  of  their  society’s  board  (15  percent)  or  a  commiCee  member  (15  percent)  

•  Another  15  percent  stated  their  primary  role  as  representa/ve  to  the  ICO

Ques7on  7  –  Society  Member  Benefits  

•  Regarding  services  offered  by  their  society  to  its  members,  respondents  iden/fied  holding  Congresses  as  most  important  

•  Offering  other  resources  for  con/nuing  educa/on  was  next  in  importance,  followed  by  having  an  up-­‐to-­‐date  and  useful  website  

•  Pa/ent  informa/on  resources,  frequent  email  newsleCers  and  informa/on  about  fellowships  were  somewhat  less  important  

•  These  findings  are  similar  to  responses  by  Prac/cing  Ophthalmologists

Ques7on  8  –  Society  Effec7veness  in  Providing  Benefits  

•  When  asked  how  effec/ve  their  society  is  in  providing  the  services/benefits  listed  in  Ques/on  7,  the  services/benefits  with  the  largest  gaps  between  importance  and  effec/veness  were:  – Having  an  up-­‐to-­‐date  website  – Advocacy  to  public  policy  makers  

•  Effec/veness  was  rated  lower  than  importance  across  all  services/benefits  with  Congresses  having  the  smallest  gap;  this  is  similar  to  findings  among  Prac/cing  Ophthalmologists

Ques7on  9  –  Helpfulness  of  Addi7onal  ICO  Programs  

•  Regarding  addi/onal  support  that  the  ICO  is  considering  to  offer  socie/es  and  their  members,  the  respondents  ranked  these  three  the  highest  in  helpfulness:  –  Resources  and  support  in  subspecialty  training  –  Resources  and  support  for  enhancing  residency  training  

–  Con/nuing  medical  educa/on  resources  you  can  make  available  to  your  members  through  your  website  

–  These  are  the  same  top  three  programs  iden/fied  by  Prac/cing  Ophthalmologists

Ques7on  10  –  Awareness  of  ICO  Programs,  Usage  &  Usefulness  

•  When  asked  if  they  were  aware  of  various  programs  and  services  from  the  ICO,  the  majority  were  familiar  with  all  programs  listed  with  excep/on  of  Helmerich  fellowships  (cross  reference  similar  low  awareness  among  Prac/cing  Ophthalmologists)  

•  Highest  awareness  was  for  the  World  Ophthalmology  Congress,  followed  by  the  ICO  examina/ons,  Website,  and  fellowships  

•  When  asked  whether  they  had  par/cipated  in/used  the  listed  ICO  programs/services,  World  Ophthalmology  Congress  had  the  highest  par/cipa/on/usage,  followed  by  the  ICO  Website  and  Leader  LeCer

Ques7on  11  –  Other  Programs  ICO  Could  Offer  

•  Regarding  other  programs  and  services  that  the  ICO  could  offer  to  help  the  respondent,  forty-­‐three  percent  of  the  par/cipants  offered  comments  which  included:  – Coopera/on  among  na/onal  socie/es/a  mee/ng  for  country  leaders  at  WOC  or  AAO  mee/ng  

– Speakers  for  our  congresses  – Skills  transfer  courses  at  na/onal  or  regional  level  –  Informa/on,  guidelines  for  young  ophthalmologists

Ques7on  12  –  Comments  regarding  WOC  

•  Regarding  World  of  Ophthalmology  Congress,    comments  were  made  by  forty-­‐four  percent  of  the  respondents  that  included:  –  Excellent  mee/ng  – Held  too  frequently;  there  are  too  many  interna/onal  mee/ngs  

–  Expensive/should  provide  more  support  for  aCendees  from  developing  countries  

–  Broaden  WOC  rela/ons  to  include  other  relevant  professions  and  professional  organiza/ons  

–  Record  presenta/ons  on  DVD  or  CD  – Offer  more  basic  science  courses

Ques7on  13  –  What  ICO  Should  Be  Doing  in  Future  

•  In  regard  to  what  the  ICO  should  be  doing  in  the  future  that  it  isn’t  doing  today,  comments  were  offered  by  thirty-­‐eight  percent  of  the  respondents  that  included:  –  Establish  a  commiCee  to  advise  na/onal  socie/es  and  their  governments  in  developing  countries  so  they  create  a  similar  residency  curriculum  to  that  in  developed  countries  

–  Get  more  involved  strategically  with  local  and  regional  society  programs;  organize  regional  congresses  

–  Establish  strong  network  with  other  eye  care  organiza/ons  so  that  ac/vi/es  are  not  duplicated,  especially  for  work  in  developing  countries  

–  Encourage  established  socie/es  to  “twin”  with  new  ones  –  Offer  forum  for  young  ophthalmologists
