The significant rainfall over the last several weeks also means we will see a rise in mosquito activity, particularly by the Asian tiger mosquito, which takes ad-vantage of those small and often inconspicuous sites around your property that fill with storm wa-ter and become prime mosquito breeding sites. So, before people start planning a chemical assault on their yards as the solution to their mosquito problems, they need to start with the simpler and more long-term approach of eliminating “collectibles.” I don’t mean souvenirs; we’re talking about all of those objects that col-lect and retain rainwater for days or weeks. For example:

• Birdbaths - Simply flush them out with a garden hose and you flush out the mosquito larvae in the process. Also, the birds will appreciate the fresh water. For horse owners with water troughs near stalls or out in pastures, one option is to use a product such as mosquito dunks, which contain the bacteria “ba-cillus thuringiensis israelensis” that kills the mosquito larvae (not the adults). Although you can use them in outdoor water bowls for pets, it is far simpler and better for your animals if you “tip and toss” the water from the bowl and replenish it with fresh water daily.

• Old cans and tires - Empty them and get rid of them by taking them to the landfill.

• Outdoor flowerpots - Empty the water from the dishes/trays underneath them. Your plants have plenty of water without the overflow. This also helps reduce fungus gnat problems in the plant soil.

• Clean gutters - Remove all of the built-up debris from your gutters. The water and decaying material attract mosquitoes.

• Rain barrels – If you collect water from your gutters or some other system, make sure the barrel is screened to keep out debris and mosquitoes.

• Tarps that cover your boat, grill, firewood, etc. also collect pockets of water that can remain for 1-2 weeks.

• The bed of that old pickup that you’ve been “restoring” for the last 25 years can collect water,

particularly if the tailgate faces uphill in your yard.

• Kids’ pools – When not in use, they’re probably being used by mosquitoes (and maybe some toads) – empty them. The same thing applies to pools (in ground or above ground) t h a t a r e n ’ t m a i n t a i n e d (e.g., pools on abandoned or fore-closed properties).

• Drainage ditch-es - They’re meant to collect storm water temporarily. Keep them free of debris so that water flows and has time to filter into the soil.

• Decorative fishponds - The can be a source of mosquitoes if they contain a lot of veg-etation that provides hiding places for the mosquito larvae. Mosquito dunks are an option here.

• Tree holes - When limbs fall off trees, the remaining hole in the trunk can collect water. Flush that out or put a small piece of a mosquito dunk into it.

Many people ask about treating shrubs in their yard. Mosquitoes will rest in these locations but whether or not treating them “controls” a mosquito problem is difficult to determine, depending on the species of mosquitoes most prominent in your area. Similarly, people using outdoor foggers will definitely kill mosquitoes, but depending on the time of day/evening that they use it, they may be missing the peak activity of the most common mosquito species found in their area. Two other issues about using outdoor foggers are important. First, safety is critical. Make sure that you are standing upwind from the direc-tion that you are dispersing the fog and wear appropriate protective

equipment to prevent the fog from getting into your eyes and lungs or on your skin. Second, know where the fog is going. Some of your neighbors may not actually want chemicals drifting onto their property. The same applies to the automated misting systems that some people have installed on their homes. From time to time, we get reports of companies that offer “mosquito control” whose response to the question of what

they are using is simply that it’s something “safe” or “natural” but they won’t actually tell you what the chemical is. You have the right to know the identity of the product and what is being used on your property. If they won’t reveal it, the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is very willing to “encourage” them to be forthright about their control program.

One other point to remember - Mosquitoes have no concept of property lines. Mosquito man-agement takes a neighborhood effort to be truly effective. We have additional information on mosquito control on the web at http://insects.ncsu.edu/Urban/mosquito.htm or for more infor-mation, you may contact Keith Walters by telephone at 875-3461 or at [email protected] by email.

4B THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. August 8, 2012

North Carolina’s teen ciga-rette-smoking rates have fallen steadily since 2003, reaching a historic low in 2011 as young people continue to pledge to remain tobacco-free.

Gevetta Whittington, a senior at Hoke High School, believes the Tobacco. Reality. Unfiltered. (TRU) organization has helped. “TRU means being productive, living with purpose and provid-ing a positive outlook,” she says.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas supports TRU programs in Hoke, Moore, Montgomery and Rich-mond counties.

According to health educator Melissa Kuhn, FirstHealth’s liai-son for teen tobacco prevention activities in the area schools, the TRU program works because of a peer-to-peer approach that trains high school students to become role models on “how to say no” for younger students.

“The high school kids are the cool kids,” Kuhn says. “They’re the ones the younger kids want to be like.”

According to Kuhn, young people become interested in tobacco-prevention efforts for a variety of reasons. Some have parents who are tobacco-users while a few have tried tobacco themselves.

“Some are just health-con-scious and know it’s bad for you and want to prevent other kids from using tobacco,” says Kuhn.

According to the 2011 N.C. Youth Tobacco Survey, the state’s middle school smoking rate dropped to 4.2 percent in 2011. During the same period, the high school rate dropped to 15.5 percent.

These are the all-time lowest rates for each group, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

A DHHS press release notes an apparent correlation between tobacco prevention efforts and the lowered rates. Since Sep-tember 2007, the release says, nearly 10,000 North Carolina high

school and middle school youths have pledged to stay tobacco-free in an initiative sponsored by the TRU program.

TRU Club adviser Godzetta Whittington finds it difficult to put TRU’s important meaning into words. “This organization pro-vides people with the knowledge, the materials and the opportunities to make healthy and lifesaving decisions personally and for the betterment of society,” she says.

In addition to their focus on the health consequences of to-bacco and second-hand smoke, participants in area TRU programs sometimes become advocates for community tobacco-free efforts and other tobacco-prevention movements. Students at Moore County’s Pinecrest High School have worked with local Parks and Recreation programs to promote tobacco-free parks while students at Union Pines High, also in Moore County, and West Mont-gomery High in Montgomery County have taken a particular interest in the health hazards of spit tobacco.

Although tobacco-use rates among teens are lower than they have ever been, young people con-tinue to experiment with tobacco products, says Kuhn.

“There’s still a lot of pressure to try (tobacco),” she says. “It’s that whole experimental age, and kids are so vulnerable. There’s always going to be peer pressure and wanting to fit in.”

North Carolina’s original TRU Program was funded by the Health and Wellness Trust Fund (HWTF) with funds from the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with major tobacco companies. After the North Carolina General Assem-bly abolished the fund last year, DHHS funding was relocated for fiscal year 2011-12 but was not set to recur.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas’ teen tobacco-prevention program has been funded by a Teen Tobac-co-Use Prevention and Cessation grant since 2001.

Teen smoking rates down, says organization

A recent $10,000 grant from the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation will help the Hoke Dental Care Center add extra clinic days.

Open s ince 1999 , the FirstHealth Dental Care Center-Raeford currently operates two days a week – on Wednesdays and Thursdays – with occa-sional Friday and Saturday hours. The new funding will provide an additional 10 to 12 clinic days to accommodate an expected average of 19 patients for each five-hour session.

Because of the center’s limited clinic time, some pa-tients have had to wait up to four months for appointments, which increases the likeli-hood of dental emergencies, Dr. Sharon Nicholson Harrell said. “That’s unacceptable to me,” she says, “clinically and professionally.”

The additional clinic time will help decrease the amount of time between patient appoint-ments for diagnostic, preven-tive, emergency and restorative services.

To be eligible for services at the FirstHealth Dental Care Centers, patients must demon-strate Medicaid or N.C. Health-Choice eligibility or provide documented proof of a family income below 200 percent of the poverty level.

For more information on the FirstHealth Dental Care Centers, call (800) 213-3284.

supporting delivery of com-prehensive oral health care for underserved children. Since 2006, the organization has dis-tributed more than $6.5 million in direct funding and donated dental products and technical resources to the affiliate net-work to expand and enhance critical oral health services for their local communities.
